Originally the ISS Venator (NCC-92716), the vessel was developed and constructed in the quantum reality commonly known as the 'Mirror Universe.' The Venator is a Trailblazer-class starship, the Terran Empire's equivalent of the Pathfinder-class. It possesses the same base frame as the Pathfinder and shares many similarities in its systems as well, though the Trailblazer is armed with a considerable amount of additional weapons systems.

Designated a Science Warship, the Venator served the role of a Hunter-Killer Ship in the Imperial Starfleet, specializing in tracking down and eliminating high-value enemy vessels. The Venator was a part of the Terran incursion on the Heart of Unity, where it attempted to fulfill its function by ambushing the USS Courageous. However, it was revealed by an anti-cloaking sweep from the SNV Kayeri Vaj, which then eliminated the Venator's entire bridge crew with a pinpoint strike on the bridge dome before they could raise shields.

The Venator was subsequently boarded by Colonial Fleet forces and captured intact. It was moved to Foundry 2, where it was turned over to Starfleet after an initial study due to the technological similarity. Under the order of Vice Admiral Selam Ali, the vessel was repaired to enter active service as a Federation starship.

On Stardate 100094.6, the ISS Venator was formally recommissioned as the USS Venator (NCC-101700), though it would not be launched until over a month later due to the lack of a crew.
