The Valley Forge moves to intercept a distress call, though nothing is quite as it seems with this new encounter...
View Act I
Keliaya@anncarise FX | https://www.architectsjournal.co.uk/pictures/2000x2000fit/1/5/6/1302156_pastedGraphic.jpg Keliaya@anncarise | A typical humanoid alien with ridges runs through the streets of a large metropolis, pushing aside pedestrians as he goes. Keliaya@anncarise | An armoured figure chases behind him, the crowds parting way as he does. Keliaya@anncarise | The fleeing alien turns into an alley and the armoured one does so as well, taking out a pistol and firing a bright beam of plasma. Keliaya@anncarise | It narrowly misses as the figure darts around the corner, blasting a large chunk of the wall. Keliaya@anncarise | The armoured figure continues its pursuit to find that the alien had jumped into a hovercar. Keliaya@anncarise | It rolls out of the way as the hovercar comes to ram him, managing to evade the vehicle as it darts out of the alley and takes to the skies. Keliaya@anncarise | The figure stands and watches the hovercar fly off, revealing a red mask in the shape of stylized flames... Keliaya@anncarise FX | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjaejG-LDAQ Keliaya@anncarise | On the Valley Forge, it is a regular day as the ship moves deeper into the unknown after their encounter with the mysterious beings of the nearby nebula. Lendaria@crystyll hums away to herself, a cheery little tune, as she works away at her console Keliaya@anncarise FX | The viewscreen displays a calming view of the starstreaks as they cruise through space. Keliaya@anncarise pauses suddenly and glances back, "Vrolmacht, I'm sending you some readings. This is what I think it is, right?" Keliaya@anncarise | Vrolmacht looks to his console to examine the data that came through, "It may be a variation on plasma-based weaponry." Keliaya@anncarise nods, "That's what I thought. It's definitely not coming from any stars." Keliaya@anncarise looks to Lennie, "Can you pick up anything with a detailed scan at 087-mark-14?" Lendaria@crystyll: "Le's take a look..." she acknowledges, tapping away Keliaya@anncarise: with close scans, she can see two small craft and plasma discharges like Kelly and Vrolmacht were discussing! Lendaria@crystyll: "Got it, yeah! Looks like two small craft. Plasma discharges..." she looks over to Vrolmacht, "Weapons fire?" Keliaya@anncarise | Vrolmacht nods, "I think so." Keliaya@anncarise taps her console, "Bridge to Captain Keelah." Lendaria@crystyll: <C-Keelah> "Go ahead Kelly" Keliaya@anncarise: <C> "We're seeing two small craft nearby and what looks like weapons fire." Lendaria@crystyll: <C-Keelah> "...Current heading? Are they moving to intercept us Lendaria@crystyll: ...?" Keliaya@anncarise taps her console, <C> "Current heading is roughly the same direction we're going. They're not headed towards us, I'm not sure they even know we're here." Lendaria@crystyll <C-Keelah> "Hold course and continue to monitor them. If they come into range, we'll attempt contact" Keliaya@anncarise: <C> "Understood, Captain." Keliaya@anncarise | Fisher: "They're moving much slower than we are. At current speeds, we'll be near them in a few minutes at warp." Lendaria@crystyll: <C-Keelah> "Alright, thank you Mr. Fisher, maintain your heading. T'Quila, try hailing them. I'm on my way" Lendaria@crystyll | TQ would begin working away to gain an open channel, acknowledging success to Keelah as she enters the bridge from her ready room Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "Unidentified vessels, this is the Federation starship Valley Forge. You have entered our sensor range and we are detecting energy discharges. Do you require assistance?" Keliaya@anncarise | A typical looking alien with head ridges appears on the screen, "You...you're not Lomren. Please, you have to help me, he's going to kill me! I don't want to die!" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah ponders what instantly looks like a delicate situation, "We do not claim any jurisdiction over this region of space. I assume this 'Lomren' is the one pursuing you. Why?" Keliaya@anncarise | Alien: "Lomren is my people. He's after me to kill me, please-" Keliaya@anncarise FX | Sparks fly behind the alien and the screen flickers as the audio cuts for a moment. Keliaya@anncarise | Fisher: "Thirty seconds until we come into range." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "People generally don't attempt to kill someone without reason. Clearly, your pursuer feels he has good reason" Keliaya@anncarise | Alien: "...you might be able to help me, you have to..." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah looks to TQ off-comm, "Tee, try and raise a response from the pursuing vessel" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah looks back to the viewscreen, "I can't promise anything without knowing the facts, but move to our position. We're dropping out of warp near you" she nods to Fisher to proceed Lendaria@crystyll | TQ attempts to raise a response from the pursuing ship Keliaya@anncarise | The Valley Forge drops out of warp by the two small craft, both of which seems damaged. One of them turns and warps away. Keliaya@anncarise FX | There is no response from either vessel now. Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah looks behind her, "Kelly, status of the remaining ship?" Keliaya@anncarise: "Damaged, but holding together. I don't think either of them has a functional comm array anymore though." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "Able to receive still?" Keliaya@anncarise: "I don't think so. Life support is damaged as well. I'm reading one lifesign, fluctuating slightly." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah looks to the image on screen, "Is it small enough to be tractored into a hangar?" Keliaya@anncarise nods, "Definitely. It's no larger than one of our shuttlecraft. Armed similarly too, but the craft chasing it was more of a fighter." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah nods, "Alright then, bring it in. Silvestrie: have a security detail join us down there with Kazra" she stands, turning to the others, "Kelly, Lennie; you're with me" Lendaria@crystyll acknowledges and heads to the turbolift with the others Keliaya@anncarise nods and follows to the lift as well. Keliaya@anncarise FX | An alien shuttle with scorch marks across its hull sits in the middle of the hangar bay. Silvestrie, Nishaa and Delaan stands guard and Kazra is there as well. Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah turns to Kelly, "Alright, let's open her up" Keliaya@anncarise nods to Sullivan and the two step over to the shuttle, with the security standing behind them at the ready. Lendaria@crystyll joins Kazra to review her preliminary scans on the alien's biology Keliaya@anncarise | Sullivan: "Looks like some of these burns have fused the entrance. We're gonna need to cut it open." Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra taps her tricorder, "The occupant doesn't seem to well. We want to be quick about that, or beam him straight to sickbay." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "Your call, doctor. If you need to get him out asap, then beam him directly. Your security detail can transfer to sickbay with him" Lendaria@crystyll | Kazra checks her readings to make a final call, always reluctant to move an unknown patient unless deemed absolutely necessary Keliaya@anncarise | Sullivan: "Should I work on the door in the meantime?" Lendaria@crystyll | Kazra: "As long as we can be expedient with getting in there, I'd rather not move him just yet. I'll continue to monitor his biosigns while you cut through" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah nods first to Kazra in acknowledgement, then again to Sully to proceed Keliaya@anncarise | Delaan passes Sullivan his phaser and he proceeds to begin cutting the door. In a minute he is finished, and the door drops open as he takes a step back. Keliaya@anncarise FX | The shuttle interior is dark, and sparks are still flying from some consoles. Keliaya@anncarise | Sullivan returns the phaser to Delaan, and he moves towards the shuttle cautiously with Nishaa. Keliaya@anncarise | Nishaa: "No sign of danger. One crew in the pilot chair, not moving." Lendaria@crystyll | Kazra follows them in, not really waiting for the all clear Keliaya@anncarise | The occupant is indeed in the chair, unconscious, but reading very much alive. Lendaria@crystyll | Kazra gets to work checking him over while Lennie remains outside with the others to observe for now Lendaria@crystyll | Kazra, "Ok, he's stable to transport but I need to get a closer look at these odd neurological readings" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "Alright, he's your patient, doctor" she smiles, "Kelly, I need everything you can gleam from this ship. See what you can backtrack in the navigational computer as a priority" Lendaria@crystyll: "To sickbay then, Cap'n?" Keliaya@anncarise nods, "On it, ma'am." Keliaya@anncarise waits for them to move the patient out before stepping into the shuttle to do her work. Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah smiles to Lennie, "Yes, Commander, let's go. Silvestrie, post a second detail to sickbay and keep one here with the ship" Keliaya@anncarise | Silvestrie: "Yes, Captain." Lendaria@crystyll follows Keelah out as they head to sickbay Lendaria@crystyll & Keelah arrive in sickbay after a short walk & confab on the situation, as one does Keliaya@anncarise | The patient is in the medical bed with the arch closed as Kazra works on conducting medical scans. Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah would look expectantly to Kazra, knowing the doctor already had a head start on them after beaming over with the patient Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra finishes what she is currently tapping and looks to Keelah and Lennie, "Most of the patient's systems are fine. Excellent condition, in fact. A few scars of common injuries like cuts and - Keliaya@anncarise: - bone fractures, but they're all completely healed and he's in top physical condition. His nervous system though..." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah perks a brow, "...problem?" Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra nods, "He's suffering from some form of degenerative neural disorder, similar to Alzheimer's Disease in humans, or Tuvan Syndrome in Vulcanoids." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "Is there anything we can do for him?" Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra: "I'll have to look into it. Maybe we can adjust a treatment for another species to administer, but there are still neural disorders like Tuvan that is incurable to this day." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "True enough, do what you can anyway. Is he fit to be revived? There are a lot of unanswered questions for him" Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra nods, "I can revive him now. It seems his unconsciousness was due to his neural condition acting up, rather than any physical damage or even life support issues." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah gives a nod of approval, "Do it" Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra gives him a hypo, and his eyes flutter as he begins to regain consciousness. Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah steps closer to look in, "Don't panic. You're on the Valley Forge. It seems you lost consciousness shortly before we intercepted you" Keliaya@anncarise | Alien: "The...Valley Forge? I don't know of any Valleys called Forge. Or any forges in valleys..." Keliaya@anncarise | Alien: "Why did you intercept me? Was I in an accident?" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah chuckles lightly, "Valley Forge is the name of this ship. Do you recall what happened? You were being pursued by a ship. When we spoke you said they were trying to kill you" Keliaya@anncarise | Alien: "I don't remember...I've worked on ships before, but I've never heard of one called Valley Forge. Why would anyone try to kill me?" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "Well, that is good question now, isn't it. What is the last thing you do remember?" Keliaya@anncarise | Alien: "I...I'm not sure. Gensang City? I've...I've been living there since I retired from ship service..." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah nods, listening patiently, "Go on" Keliaya@anncarise | Alien: "That's all I remember. One day blends into the next, it's all the same...I definitely don't remember anyone wanting to kill me." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah hrms, resting a hand on his shoulder, "Alright, just take it easy. The doctor here will keep an eye on you for now. And I'll leave you with my officer - Lendaria - here for company" Keliaya@anncarise | Alien: "A doctor? Am I hurt? I feel fine..." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "Just a precaution, given the condition we found you in" she smiles, turning a cautionary glance to Kazra as she turns away Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah steps over to Lennie, "If anyone can reach him, Commander; you can. See what you can find out. About him, about his people" Lendaria@crystyll nods, "Yes Cap'n" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "I'll check in with Kelly to see what's she's been able to find" Lendaria@crystyll: "Will keep ya apprised" she nods, looking to Kazra as Keelah departs Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra steps up to Lennie, "I'll see if I can work out any treatments for him. I'll be nearby if you need me." Lendaria@crystyll: "So what'dya think, this condition likely t'affact short term memory an' all?" Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra: "These kinds of conditions are known to, and I'm certainly seeing some degeneration in the parts of his brain responsible for memory and personality already." Lendaria@crystyll: "Personality? Ya think there could be a bit'o... duality goin' on?" Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra: "Not exactly. It's not impossible, but more commonly patients suffering from degenerative neural conditions or head injuries can have alterations to their personality. As in, they might - Keliaya@anncarise: - not behave like they used to. In the most drastic cases, major damage to the brain resulted in complete personality shifts." Lendaria@crystyll: "S'it possible f'such a shift t'occur in line wit' trauma an' memory loss?" Lendaria@crystyll: "So maybe he shifted, but forgot, so reverted or somethin'?" Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra nods, "Hard to say if it's normal for his condition specifically since we know so little about it, but it's happened in similar conditions with other species." Lendaria@crystyll: "Aight, so proceed wit' caution then" she chuckles, "Well, wish me luck!" Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra: "Good luck!" Lendaria@crystyll smiles, moving over to the patient's side Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra heads into her office to do research. Lendaria@crystyll pitches up at his side, "Hey there, hun'. How'ya doin'?" Keliaya@anncarise | Patient: "Hi. You all look so different. It's like that one group we met, this alliance of three species..." Keliaya@anncarise | Patient: "What was it called..." Lendaria@crystyll: "Oh, th'Trinity guys?" she smiles, "Yeah we met 'em too not long back. Nice folks!" Keliaya@anncarise | The patient smiles, "Yes they were. The tall, pointy-eared ones especially." Lendaria@crystyll: "Yeah, they are! So, is you'se people friends o'theirs? They mentioned a number 'o friendly species in th'region" Keliaya@anncarise | Patient: "We do trade with them from time to time, from what I remember. Still have some of their products coming into our stores when I'm in the city, so I think we still do." Lendaria@crystyll: "Sounds good. I visited one o'their cities an' they have some real nice product, so ya lucky t'have tha' trade!" she pauses with a smile, making herself comfy at his side, "I'm-a Lennie, by the way.+ Lendaria@crystyll: + Wha's ya name?" Keliaya@anncarise | The patient smiles back, "I'm Falen. It's nice to meet you. I've never met one of your people before, where do you come from?" Lendaria@crystyll: "Ohh, long long way away!" she chuckles, "We'se the first t'explore out this way from th'Federation" Keliaya@anncarise | Falen: "That explains why I've never seen you. Do your people go exploring far away from home very often?" Lendaria@crystyll: "To a point" she nods, "We've explored every every quadrant o'this galaxy in part, but still barely seen a fraction o'it" Keliaya@anncarise | Falen: "Well, the galaxy is a big place..." Lendaria@crystyll: "Really big!" she chuckles, "So wha'bout your people, Falen? Y'all get out explorin' much?" Keliaya@anncarise | Falen: "We did a little in our early days. Went one way but the Trinity told us not to go further, or we'll run into their old enemies who'll probably try to conquer us. Went the other and it - Keliaya@anncarise - was all run by some people who had strict rules and we couldn't pass their test. So we just mind our own business for the most part now, except trading with people around us." Lendaria@crystyll: "Sounds kinda rough. So wha'bout you?" she asks, with a fresh smile, "Must have somethin' of an explorer's spirit t'be out here in ya own ship!" Keliaya@anncarise | Falen smiles, "Well, I used to fly one of our patrol ships. That was a long time ago though. I haven't been in a ship for years now..." Lendaria@crystyll tilts her head a little, "'Cept th'one we found ya in?" Keliaya@anncarise | Falen: "I don't remember that at all. I mean, I'm sure I can still fly if I wanted to, but...the only thing I've flown of late is hovercraft..." Lendaria@crystyll quirks her lip a little, resting a hand on his shoulder, "Don't worry, hun'. I know it can't be easy not rememberin', but we'll get to th'bottom of it" Keliaya@anncarise | Falen smiles, "Thank you for helping me, Lennie." Lendaria@crystyll smiles sincerely, "I's a wha' we do! But we also needs t'see 'bout gettin' ya home now, don't we. Think ya could show us where ya' home system is if I got ya some charts?" Keliaya@anncarise | Falen: "Yeah. I used to fly there all the time." Lendaria@crystyll: "Great" She chirps, reaching for a PADD. She taps away before handing it to him, "Take ya time. An' feel free t'share anythin' tha' sparks wit'ya, I'm-a scientist, so love t'share in these things!" Keliaya@anncarise | Falen: "Well, I've seen a few things in my time. May be a few you're interested in." Keliaya@anncarise | He examines the PADD and taps it, "There. That should be where Lomsett is." Lendaria@crystyll smiles, "Tha's wha' ya homeworlds called? Tell me 'bout it" she takes the PADD, marking the system indicated Keliaya@anncarise | Falen: "It's a wonderful place. There's grand sprawling cities, charming farming communities, and beautiful lands..." Lendaria@crystyll mmm's, "Sounds like Narris. So you'se a country sort or like ya city life? I'm-a always torn mahself!" Keliaya@anncarise | Falen: "Me too. I was born in the country, wanted more, joined as a pilot and live in a city now, so...tells you about me," he chuckles. Lendaria@crystyll: "Man after mah own heart" she winks Keliaya@anncarise FX | A few hours has passed since the Valley Forge rescued Falen, the mysterous alien from the shuttle that was being pursued by a fighter. Members of the crew who are working on figuring out why - Keliaya@anncarise - he was running and how to help him gather to discuss their findings. Keliaya@anncarise | Kelly and Gwi sit on one side of the table, while Lennie, Kazra and Silvestrie take the other side. Lendaria@crystyll Keelah sits at the head of the table, watching patiently as the last of the staff arrive, "Alright, we've had some time to gather information on our guests circumstances. Let's see where we're at, + Lendaria@crystyll: + Commander?" she looks to Lennie first Lendaria@crystyll: "Not a great deal t'report s'far really. Got a name - Falen - an' a confident ID on th'location o'his homeworld. Otherwise, jus' a kindly gent who doesn't know how he got 'ere" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah nods and looks to Kazra, "Doctor, what's the latest on his condition?" Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra: "I've administered a few treatments, but none of them have any effect on him. I did find something interesting when studying his physiology, though." Keliaya@anncarise | She takes out a datapad and sets it on the table, looking to Lennie, "I didn't want to disrupt your conversation, but you might want to have a look as well." Lendaria@crystyll peers curiously at the data Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra explains it to the rest of the crew as Lennie examines the technicals, "When I was trying to figure out how to adjust known treatments to his species, I noticed that he was producing an - Keliaya@anncarise: - unusual amount of telomerase and similar substances. It's an enzyme that prevents telomere shortening in cells, essentially allowing the cell to divide more often." Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra: "I took a closer look at his cells, and it was what I suspected. Normally, telomerase is found in cancerous cells, which is why these cells can keep dividing and essentially become - Keliaya@anncarise: - immortal, eventually overrunning the whole body if not treated. All the cells of his body are /already/ immortal. We're looking at a being that doesn't age." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah perks a brow, "Is this a natural condition for the species, or do you have signs of artificial engineering to this effect?" Lendaria@crystyll hrms, "Nothin'ere t'suggest engineerin'. Not 'less it's s'far back tha' it's evolved to a natural state now" Keliaya@anncarise | Silvestrie: "Are they immortal immortal, or just don't age?" Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra: "They don't age. From what I'm able to tell, they're still capable of dying from physical injury as much as the next species." Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra: "And as we've seen with this Falen, they're not immune to medical complications either." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "So his debilitating condition is in fact... not connected to this state?" Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra: "I don't know. I'm afraid one patient isn't enough data to make that conclusion." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah nods, turning then to Kelly, "Alright. What about the shuttle, have we been able to learn anything more from there?" Keliaya@anncarise nods, "We were able to find out that it originated from Gensang City on a planet called Lomsett. Using the navigational data, Lieutenant Gwi's been able to trace its location." Keliaya@anncarise | Gwi passes the datapad to Keelah. Lendaria@crystyll cranes her neck to see if it correlates with the information she obtained Lendaria@crystyll frowns a little, "Huh..." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah peers to Lennie over the top of the PADD, "Commander?" Keliaya@anncarise | Gwi: "We did as detailed scans as we can from this range. I can confirm the system has an M-class world and there are warp signatures going towards it, suggesting a warp-capable civilization." Keliaya@anncarise | Gwi and Kelly look to Lennie as well. Lendaria@crystyll presents her own PADD, "This's th'location ID'd by Falen. No hesitation either, like he knew it by heart. Talked passionately 'bout fond memories an' all" Keliaya@anncarise | Gwi takes the PADD, "That's not possible. My team was checking out that system yesterday. We haven't gotten around to submitting the report yet, Commander, but it's barren. No habitable worlds, - Keliaya@anncarise: - no sign of civilization, unless it's very well hidden." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah, "A possibility" Lendaria@crystyll shakes her head, "I dunno, Cap'n. He mentioned th'same city as his home there; talked 'bout grand cities and luscious countryside too" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah hrms, looking to Kazra, "Given your revelation about these peoples lifespans, is it possible that his memory lapse is greater spanning than suspected?" Lendaria@crystyll: "Could it be that he remembers a former homeworld that was vacated?" Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra: "Not long enough for a world to completely go barren, unless there's been signs of a recent disaster in the system?" Keliaya@anncarise | Gwi shakes his head, "None that I've seen. The system is very unremarkable, compared to many others we've observed at least." Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra: "It's more likely that his memory lapse is causing him to identify the wrong sys-" Keliaya@anncarise | She pauses as Silvestrie's combadge chirps. Keliaya@anncarise | Silvestrie: "Sorry.” Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah gestures for him to proceed, leaning back for a thoughtful pause Keliaya@anncarise | He taps his combadge, "Silvestrie here." Keliaya@anncarise <C - Trac> "It's Crewman Trac. The patient suddenly got very aggressive, and we had to hold him down. One of the nurses has given him a sedative for the time being." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah looks to Kazra for a reaction Keliaya@anncarise | Silvestrie: "Thanks for letting me know. Keep me updated on the situation, Crewman." Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra looks at her PADD solemly, "I think his condition is worsening." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "It sounds like the best we can do for his is to get him back into the care of his own people" Keliaya@anncarise | Gwi: "The system we identified is about half a day away at high warp. We're fairly confident there's a technologically advanced civilization there. If it's not his own people, well, they might - Keliaya@anncarise: - know something about where they are." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah nods, tapping her intercom, "Se'Lai to Helm. I'm updating you with coordinates to a nearby system. Engage immediately at maximum warp" Keliaya@anncarise | <C - Ann> "Aye aye, Cap'n." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah looks around, "Alright, if there's nothing more; you have 12 hours to learn all you can about this society and our guest" Lendaria@crystyll: "I'll-a continue t'talk wit'him. Maybe make a soothin' presence if I can..." she looks to Kazra Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra nods, "Do what you can for him. I'll keep working on potential treatments and gathering data on his physiology." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah nods, "Do what you can, but I don't want any risks taken. If he continues to display aggressive outbursts he'll have to be sedated until we get him back to his people. Restrained if necessary." Keliaya@anncarise | Silvestrie: "My people'll make sure he doesn't become a danger to anyone." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "Alright, good work everyone. Dismissed" Keliaya@anncarise FX | Kazra and Lennie return to sickbay after the conference. Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra: "Should I revive the patient to see if you can talk to him?" Lendaria@crystyll: "If ya think's ok to. F'him, I mean" Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra: "Physically, he can be awakened, and interacting with him shouldn't accelerate his condition, but we'll have to see if he's in a state where he can talk." Lendaria@crystyll: "O'course. Le's do it then" Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra nods and steps up to the bed, injecting Falen with another hypo. Lendaria@crystyll follows, hanging back out of the way while she revives him Keliaya@anncarise | He awakens and slowly comes to attention, looking up at Kazra. He appears scared and shrinks away from her slightly. Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra: "It's okay. I'm a doctor. I'm here to help you." Lendaria@crystyll steps into view beside Kazra, "It's ok Falen, she's a friend. How are you feeling?" Keliaya@anncarise | Falen: "I want to go home. Everything here is so strange." Keliaya@anncarise | Falen looks to Lennie, "I remember you. You were nice and came to help. But I want to go home now." Lendaria@crystyll smiles softly, "That's right Falen, we'se all'ere t'help ya. An' don'tcha worry, as we speak we'se warpin' fast as we can t'ya homeworld" Lendaria@crystyll: "We'll have ya back in tha' charmin' city o'yours before ya know it. Dunno 'bout ya, but I'm-a lookin' forward to ya' showin' me these sights" Keliaya@anncarise | Falen smiles: "Me too. I'm sure you'll like it. There's a lot of things to see and great people to meet." Lendaria@crystyll gives a reassuring glance to Kazra as she settles back by his side as he seems ok for now Lendaria@crystyll: "Well, we'se got some hours 'fore we get there. Plenty o'time for ya t'tell me all 'bout wha's we gonna see an' do" Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra smiles, "I'll leave you two to it." Keliaya@anncarise FX | The hours pass by as Falen tells of the beautiful hills and forests of the region he's from. He doesn't seem to mention the cities except in passing though, as if he doesn't know much about - Keliaya@anncarise: - them anymore. Soon, he drifts off to sleep as they converse... Lendaria@crystyll feels the burden of the formed bond after all this time and remains at his bedside while he rests Keliaya@anncarise | He wakes naturally after a few hours, looking around before suddenly bolting up. Lendaria@crystyll sits up as well at the sudden movement, "Hey, hey. S'ok Falen, I's me, Lennie. Remember?" Keliaya@anncarise | Falen: "Lennie. Yes. Right. But I can't be here. No, I need to move. They'll kill me. I don't wanna die." Keliaya@anncarise | Falen: "Where are we? Where'd you take me?" Keliaya@anncarise | He speaks quickly, visibly panicked and confused. Lendaria@crystyll: "It's ok, Falen. We found ya but we'se takin' ya home. Remember how ya's gonna show me all those lovely sights 'round ya home" she holds a gentle and calming tone Keliaya@anncarise | Falen: "Nononono. I can't go back. I won't go back. The Death-Hunters will find me. I need to get out of here!" Keliaya@anncarise | He leaps down from the bed and makes a run for the door. Lendaria@crystyll tries to hold him back but without being forceful on him, knowing security will do their job if needed, "Falen, please. It's ok, ya safe 'ere" Keliaya@anncarise | Falen pulls away and tries to exit the sickbay. The tall Delaan steps in his way and he tries to push the large alien down, but Delaan easily grapples him and pins him against the wall. Keliaya@anncarise | Delaan: "You cannot leave. It is for your own good." Keliaya@anncarise | Falen: "No! They'll kill me!" Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra steps out of her office and goes to grab a hypo while Falen continues to struggle. Lendaria@crystyll follows, "Falen, look at me" her tone taking a more authoritative pitch Keliaya@anncarise | Falen looks at her, his eyes filled with fear, "I'm not ready. I'm sorry." Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra steps up behind Lennie with hypo in hand, looking to her to see if she has the situation in hand. Lendaria@crystyll 's tone softens again, "Ya ain't got nothin' t'be apologizin' for Falen. We'se 'ere t'help ya, but we can't do tha' alone. I know it ain't easy, but I need ya t'trust me Falen. Can ya do tha'?" Keliaya@anncarise | Falen takes a deep breath and nods. Lendaria@crystyll offers her hand, inviting him to return with her, "C'mon. If ya feel up t'it, we can talk 'bout wha's goin' on wit'ya" Keliaya@anncarise | He takes her hand and breaks down, beginning to sob uncontrollably. Lendaria@crystyll gently encourages him closer, holding an arm around him if he seems ok with it, as she walks him back to the bed with a worried glance to Kazra Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra looks just as worried as she observes the two making their way back to the bed. Lendaria@crystyll slowly works her way back to the bed, sitting on it and guiding him next to her. She continues to hold and guide him, maintaining control and authority over the situation Lendaria@crystyll doesn't speak initially, just sits there with him. Letting him work through until he's ready to speak Keliaya@anncarise | Falen doesn't speak either, just leans on Lennie until his sobs fade and he appears to drift into unconsciousness again. Lendaria@crystyll verifies this and gingerly manouvers away and lays him down on the bed Keliaya@anncarise | He lies on the bed quiet and still. Delaan steps back outside, satisfied that he won't be trying to run away in the meantime. Lendaria@crystyll takes the opportunity to consult with Kazra Lendaria@crystyll: "What'cha think, doc? Paraniod delusions go wit' somethin' like this?" Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra: "I'm not sure if they're delusions, exactly. Someone /did/ attack his shuttle." Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra: "I think there may actually be people after him, it's just these outbursts that are a part of his condition as he slowly loses control over his emotions." Lendaria@crystyll nods, "Tha's mah concern. But we gotta continue, right? Th'way he was at th'end there, almost like this's expected but he's in a form o'denial maybe" Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra nods, "Seems that way. His memory seems to come and go as well, there are times where he geniunely doesn't seem to know what's happening to him." Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra: "It's something that's known to happen with certain variations of neural degenerative con-" Keliaya@anncarise FX | The intercomm sounds... Keliaya@anncarise | A FEW MINUTES EARLIER... Keliaya@anncarise | Gwi: "A ship's just showed up on sensors on an intercept course." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "Any match on configuration?" Keliaya@anncarise: "Looks to be frigate sized. Same form of plasma-based energy weapon as the shuttle." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah looks to TQ: "Hail them" Lendaria@crystyll | TQ taps away some before nodding, "Channel open, Captain" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah looks to the viewscreen, putting on her best diplomatic front Keliaya@anncarise FX | An armoured figure with a red cloak and a red mask depicting stylized flames appears on the viewscreen. Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "This is Captain Se'Lai of the Federation starship Valley Forge. To whom do I speak?" Keliaya@anncarise | Masked Figure: "I am a Death-Hunter of the Crematorium. I have come to claim one of my own named Falen. I encountered your vessel earlier, but Falen had damaged my communications systems and - Keliaya@anncarise: - you are well-armed. I decided to retreat to one of our patrols, in case you are hostile, or had identified me as being so." Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "But I have returned to complete my duty." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "I apologize if our sudden appearance before presented a hostile front, we had attempted to contact you before you departed. We detected your engagement and moved to see if assistance was + Lendaria@crystyll: + required, obviously unaware that you were pursuing Falen and engaged in combat at the time" Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "And I apologize for not being able to receive your attempt at contact. You are clearly amenable to conversation. Had I known, I would have stayed to be taken aboard your vessel - Keliaya@anncarise: - so I may explain my actions." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah smiles gently, "You had no way of knowing, and did as you had to. Moving to the now, you have now doubt detected that we are en route to your home system" Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "And that was why I suspected your intentions were not malicious. However, I suggest you allow me to take Falen back to Lomsett. I am better equipped to deal with a Tan-Bestol." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah tilts her head a little, "Forgive my ignorance to your people's culture, a... Tan-Bestol?" Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "Ah. I feared that would not translate for you. I will try to do so manually. It mean something along the lines of 'one who is losing self-awareness.'" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah nods her understanding, "Yes, we learned that Falen was suffering a debilitating condition. He is currently under the care of my Chief Medical Officer. It is condition not dissimilar to + Lendaria@crystyll: + those we are familiar with." she pauses briefly, "I realize this is an internal affair that we have ingratiated ourselves to, but in the interest of friendly relations I would like to invite you on+ Lendaria@crystyll: + board that we may discuss things fully" Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "I have heard that other species sometimes enter similar states, but it is not the same. I will come on board to explain further." Lendaria@crystyll: "Thank you. We will form up on you and standby for transport" Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "I will await you." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "And I look forward to greeting you in person. Valley Forge out" Keliaya@anncarise: "Chief Oliver's standing by with the transporters, Captain." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "Thank you, Kelly. I'll be down there momentarily" she taps her combadge, as she stands, "Se'Lai to sickbay" Keliaya@anncarise <C - Kazra> "Sickbay here." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "Kazra, there's been a development. Could you and Lendaria meet me in transporter room 2" Keliaya@anncarise <C - Kazra> "We'll be there right away." Lendaria@crystyll arrives with Kazra shortly after Keelah Keliaya@anncarise | Katie: "Energizing..." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "A Death-Hunter here to collect Falen" clarified to the two new arrivals Keliaya@anncarise FX | The imposing figure with the red cloak and mask materializes on the transporter pad. Keliaya@anncarise | Katie speaks as the figure forms completely, "We've disabled the weapon you beamed down with. Standard safety procedure here." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah steps forward, "Welcome aboard" Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "I expect you have Falen confined or watched?" Lendaria@crystyll | Kazra nods: "He is resting in one of our sickbays and under guard" Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "Good. Then I will not need a weapon." Keliaya@anncarise | He steps off the pad and looks to Keelah: "You have an impressive vessel." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "Thank you. I hope this won't be the only time a member of your species gets the chance to visit. Please" she gestures for him to join and exit Keliaya@anncarise | The Death-Hunter joins her and steps out of the transporter room. Keliaya@anncarise | The Death-Hunter walks into the conference room and takes a chair, sitting at the far end from Keelah. Lendaria@crystyll FX | They all return to their usual seats after an insightful confab on the way Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "So, you mentioned having encountered similar conditions in your species?" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah nods, looking to Kazra Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra: "Degenerative neural conditions exist in just about every species. There are many variations, some treatable, others still uncurable even with modern technology." Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "Most of your species on board age and die, do you not?" Keliaya@anncarise | Kazra nods, "That is true. And I understand that yours does not?" Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "Yes, and no." Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "We have sought ways to prevent the Dalvodan, but none have been found. We do not think of it as the lack of a cure however, just as you do not say you lack a cure for death." Lendaria@crystyll: "So y'all consider this condition o'his t'be terminal an', wha'? Expediate th'process?" Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "No. As you understand, our bodies do not fail unless subjected to extreme injury. However, our minds have limited capacity. As we continue to exist, we continue to store more and - Keliaya@anncarise: - more data in our brain. Eventually, our brain exceeds peak capacity and begins to shut down. That is the process of Dalvodan." Lendaria@crystyll: "An tha's why Falen's gettin' all confused an' forgettin' stuff then" Keliaya@anncarise | The Death-Hunter nods, "We lose our higher brain functions first. Memory. Rationality. Eventually we become primal, driven only by animal insticts. And then, even less than that. An empty husk - Keliaya@anncarise: - that lashes out and feeds on anything it can until it is destroyed. That is why when our time comes, we must undergo the Sere-Vatol ritual. The destruction of our bodies, so we do not become a - Keliaya@anncarise: - threat to those around us." Lendaria@crystyll slumps, disheartened, "S'there truly nothin' tha' can be done f'him? He's such a sweet old thing..." Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "Your own people have searched for ways to prevent death, no doubt. To what end?" Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "We have ways of delaying the degredation, but it will only cause the Tan-Bestol to live out their remaining time in suffering. Dalvodan is as natural to us, as your death is to - Keliaya@anncarise: - you. It is unfortunate, but it will always come." Lendaria@crystyll: "I hear ya, jus' he seems so adamant tha' he ain't ready f'it yet" Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "That is why we Death-Hunters exist. Not all are capable of accepting that their existence must come to an end. Others have tried to run before. We are given the unpleasant task - Keliaya@anncarise: - of hunting them, to ensure the safety of other people, and to carry out a mercy to them." Lendaria@crystyll sighs a little, obviously despondant at the news but accepting of the situation Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "Our role is a grave one, but vital for the stability of our people. Many such Orders have formed in our past due to the dangers posed by Lomren who are not properly taken care of - Keliaya@anncarise: - after the onset of Dalvodan. It is common for us to fear an end to our existence, and those around us rarely have the will to end our lives for us when the time comes." Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "Thus, the Crematorium has the unenviable task of doing so." Lendaria@crystyll: "One thing I don't get... when I talked wit'him earlier - when he didn't remember wha's happenin' - I asked him t'show us where he came from, an' he showed us this random star system" Lendaria@crystyll slides over a PADD showing the system, "He seemed so clear on it. Does this place mean anything t'ya people?" Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "Falen is confused. His memories and knowledge are not reliable. I believe our patrol vessels occasionally pass through that region. He was a pilot, was he not? That was why he - Keliaya@anncarise: - was so capable with the vessel he stole." Lendaria@crystyll: "Tha' could explain it, yeah. He talked fondly o'those times" Keliaya@anncarise | The Death-Hunter nods and slides the PADD back to Lennie, "Then that is likely why he identified that location instead." Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "Are there any other questions you wish to ask?" Lendaria@crystyll shakes her head, "I still wish we could do somethin' t'help, but medical ain't mah thing" Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "We will do all we can to make his end easier. When you are ready, I will take Falen back to Lomsett."" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah considers Lennie briefly before looking back to their guest, "Would it be permissible for us to accompany you? Meeting new civilizations is why we are out here after all" Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "You are welcome to visit Lomsett." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah smiles, "Thank you. We are happy to convey Falen back if you see fit. In the mean time, you are also welcome to spend more time on board getting to know a little about our people after + Lendaria@crystyll: + being so accomodating to our questions" Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "As interesting as it would be, I must conduct my duty first. Though if you wish to convey Falen back, that will be acceptable so long as I remain on board." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah gives another glance to Lennie before nodding, "That sounds amenable. I shall leave you in the capable hands of my CSO who has been tending to Falen" Keliaya@anncarise | The Death-Hunter looks back to Lennie, "Thank you for tending to him. I think it best he not see me for the moment, as I suspect he may not be comfortable knowing what I am here to do." Lendaria@crystyll nods, "He had quite th'emotional episode before, but s'far is respondin' well enough t'mah presence" Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "That is good. My role is as a hunter. I am afraid I am not the most skilled in comforting. We are only dispatched when convincing from the other branches of the Crematorium have - Keliaya@anncarise: - failed. Hopefully, my associates back on Lomsett will be able to ease him when we return." Lendaria@crystyll: "I think in his focused moments, he's comin' t'accept his situation. Perhaps while he rests, ya could teach me more 'bout this process so I can keep helpin' him while we travel?" Keliaya@anncarise | The Death-Hunter nods, "I will impart you with my knowledge." Lendaria@crystyll smiles, "Thanks" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "Well, if there's nothing else I believe we're done here" Keliaya@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "Indeed. I may detail the Dalvodan process in private." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah, "Of course" turning to Lennie, "I'll leave it for you to organize accommodations as required" Lendaria@crystyll nods, smiling appreciatively, "Will do, thanks Cap'n"
View Act II
B'Atar@anncarise | The masked Death-Hunter trails behind Lennie as the two step into her office. Lendaria@crystyll leads them into her office back down among the labs, having now shown DH lots of the ship from two walkthroughs, "We'se can talk 'ere without interruption I reckon. Can I offer ya any refreshment?" B'Atar@anncarise | Death-Hunter: "I am fine. I have obtained food and water on the patrol vessel." Lendaria@crystyll: "Well I hope ya'll excuse me fetchin' somethin'. Lotta talkin' dries' th'throat out some! Make yaself comfy, please" she gestures to the sofa while moving to the replicator B'Atar@anncarise | He steps over to the sofa and takes a seat, looking around quietly. Lendaria@crystyll returns after a moment to sit with a large beaker with a curly straw protruding from the top, sipping happily, "Aah, better. So... what do I need t'know 'bout this whole affair?" B'Atar@anncarise: "I am not an expert in ensuring the confort of the Tan-Bestol, but as my task is to ensure they are dealt with before they become a danger, there is much I can tell you about the process." B'Atar@anncarise: "You already know how it starts- with the brain reaching its capacity and slowly shutting itself down." Lendaria@crystyll: "Right. Is there a typical staged progression from there?" B'Atar@anncarise: "Yes, but the stages are very rough categorizations. In general, we classify those undergoing the process of Dalvodan in three stages: the Tan-Bestol, when higher brain functions begin to shut down, - B'Atar@anncarise: - the Azegai, or Feral stage, when the Lomren has lost all self-awareness and possesses only the most basic ability to reason similar to simpler lifeforms, and the Nuldor, the Husk stage where - B'Atar@anncarise: - almost nothing is left of the brain save basic motor functions. At this point, they are nothing but empty shells." Lendaria@crystyll: "Aight, so's there a generally consistent timin' t'all these stages? Or tha' varyin' by th'individual?" B'Atar@anncarise: "It varies entirely by the individual, but none have staved off the process for more than a handful of years, even with our best treatments." Lendaria@crystyll: "An' it's this Tan-Bestol stage when y'all, wha'? Isolate 'em f'treatment?" B'Atar@anncarise: "No, typically this is where the Sere-Vatol ritual is conducted. It is the only stage where we are still able accept the termination of our existence. Once the Azegai stage is reached, they are - B'Atar@anncarise: - governed solely by an animalistic survival instinct. That is the stage where they must truly be 'hunted.'" Lendaria@crystyll: "So Falen's... in th'latter stages o' Tan-Bestol? Tha' how come ya gotta hunt him like this?" B'Atar@anncarise: "Yes, and because he has refused to undergo the ritual and attempted to flee. One does not have to be Azegai to fear death." Lendaria@crystyll: "True enough I guess" she slurps her shake, "So... wha's gonna happen t'him now when we get him back?" B'Atar@anncarise: "The non-martial branches of the Crematorium will attempt to ease his mind into the ritual, where he will ultimately be disintegrated so his body does not pose a risk once his mind has completely - B'Atar@anncarise: - given way. It is necessary for the way our bodies function." Lendaria@crystyll: "An' if he ain't so easily pursuaded into th'ritual?" B'Atar@anncarise: "Then once he becomes Azegai, a Death-Hunter will have to ensure his disintegration by other means." Lendaria@crystyll slumps a little, "Guess I already figured tha', jus' had t'hear it..." Lendaria@crystyll: "So's Falen got any family or anyone back home t'help him through this?" B'Atar@anncarise: "Yes. The Crematorium will already have contacted them by now." Lendaria@crystyll: "So I guess anythin' I try'n do should be in line wit' wha's expected they'll be doin'?" B'Atar@anncarise: "He has already fled the ritual once, and it may not be easy to convince him. Attempting to do so here may result in him attempting to flee again. It may be safer to simply make him more comfortable." B'Atar@anncarise: "I believe that is what they will try to do first before convincing him into the ritual anyways." Lendaria@crystyll: "Fair enough, I think I can do tha' at least!" B'Atar@anncarise: "Excellent. Psychological treatment for one in the Tan-Bestol is often very difficult. As I have said, the categorizations are very general." B'Atar@anncarise: "Almost all Tan-Bestol suffer problems with their memory, but often times, different parts of the brain shut down at different times. I have seen Tan-Bestol only a few months in who have already - B'Atar@anncarise: - lost the capacity for language, and Tan-Bestol capable of forming completely rational thoughts but losing all control over their emotion." B'Atar@anncarise: "Some lose more recent memories first, some lose their earliest memories, and some become incapable of forming new memories from a certain point on. It is all very inconsistent." Lendaria@crystyll hrms, "From wha' we seen so far; Falen's lost short to mid term memory. He never remembered leavin' in tha' ship, or being pursued by ya. But th'second time he woke, he remember our first + Lendaria@crystyll: + conversation. Or at least, he recognized me from it" B'Atar@anncarise: "That is not unheard of. Sometimes when the brain purges old information, it leaves some room for new information to come in. Or perhaps it is this very new information that is starting to overwrite - B'Atar@anncarise: - the old. The technicalities of such things are not my specialty." Lendaria@crystyll: "Wha'bout this actual process itself? I mean, ya physical lifespan's a natural thing or were there some intense engineerin' some way back?" Lendaria@crystyll smiles, "Sorry, exobiology's mah thing so kinda curious" B'Atar@anncarise chuckles, "It is only normal. From what I understand, most species in the galaxy are not like us." B'Atar@anncarise: "As far as we are aware, we have been this way. There have been many groups dedicated to dealing with those undergoing Dalvodan. Over our history we have developed many solutions, from removing the - B'Atar@anncarise: - head from the body or driving a nail through the head to injecting nerve-destroying poisons and burning the Azegai and Nuldor. The latter was how our modern organization gained our name." B'Atar@anncarise: "When we developed directed energy technology, we decided that instant disintegration was the most merciful method, and the one employed today by the Crematorium." Lendaria@crystyll: "Wow, this has been th'case f'quite some time then by th'sounds of it" B'Atar@anncarise: "It has. If there was evolutionary tampering, it was not done by my people, as we would not have possessed the technology." B'Atar@anncarise: "The Death-Hunter is an ancient tradition. We were not originally associated with the Crematorium. They prevented Tan-Bestol from turning into Azegai, while we hunted Azegai and Nuldor." B'Atar@anncarise: "Eventually, our order merged with the Crematorium and became its martial arm." Lendaria@crystyll: "S'quite th'evolution. So y'all ever cross paths with th'Chlasi much on this stuff? Gotta figure an interestin' stance in this versus their Ascention" B'Atar@anncarise: "The Chlasi and Erudis have both studied our physiology and came up with no solution to Dalvodan, whether through telepathy or science." B'Atar@anncarise: "What they think of us, I do not know. I have only interacted with their Gaton defenders once." Lendaria@crystyll: "Interestin' stuff" she smiles, "Well you'se been very accomodatin' in answerin' mah question, an' though I know it maybe ain't ya thing personally, I'm-a happy to return th'favour if there's anythin" B'Atar@anncarise: "There is one thing I am curious of. Your vessel is well-defended. You all wear clothes of the same style, differentiated by colour codes. In those ways you are much like the Gaton, yet you are not - B'Atar@anncarise: - warriors and behave rather differently from them." Lendaria@crystyll smiles, "Yeah, Starfleet's a... multi-facted organization. We operate to military protocols an' such, but our primary mandates' more diplomatic an' scientific" Lendaria@crystyll: "Th'organization as a whole's got many different divisions. As an exploration vessel, we come under Command wha's th'more regimented one" B'Atar@anncarise: "Very interesting. Our organizations tend to be much more specific." Lendaria@crystyll: "Comes wit' th'evolution o'Starfleet an' th'Federation. Lotta ground t'cover!" B'Atar@anncarise: "Indeed. I suppose we only govern one people in one system, and we are capable of having many small organizations to fill smaller needs." Lendaria@crystyll: "Yeah, not always easy f'folks t'get us at first. Th'sheer scale o'th'organization's unprecedented, so is kinda hard t'swallow I know" Lendaria@crystyll: "But... it works for us" she chirps B'Atar@anncarise: "Just how large is your Starfleet and Federation?" Lendaria@crystyll: "Hundreds o'different member species now, spannin' all four quadrants o'this galaxy. Not all's got folks servin' in Starfleet, just as Starfleet's got some - like me - who come from a species wha' + Lendaria@crystyll: + ain't a member" B'Atar@anncarise: "Yes, I expect the galaxy does not have so many such large factions. It is not entirely unprecedented to us, however." Lendaria@crystyll: "Oh?" B'Atar@anncarise: "We do not know the exact size of the ones on the other side of us from the Trinity Alliance. But we know they are large, more than likely with hundreds of systems under their control." Lendaria@crystyll: "Wait... ya talkin' bout th'Horde of th'Primevals?" B'Atar@anncarise: "I speak of those not too distant from us. I have never heard them referred to as Horde or Primevals. They are not really an Empire either." B'Atar@anncarise: "They impose their will upon others if they must, but mostly they just watch. Or so we are told." Lendaria@crystyll: "Tha'... does sound kinda similar t'wha' we heard..." B'Atar@anncarise: "We were deemed in enough control of our technology to not warrant intervention. But we are not welcome in their territory and thus know little about them." B'Atar@anncarise: "I have only heard that they are vast, and they wield technology beyond our comprehension." Lendaria@crystyll: "Oh! Wait, no... tha' sounds like th'Operators, I think it is?" B'Atar@anncarise: "I am not even certain what they are called. Our charts deem the entire side of space opposite the Trinity as 'Regulated Space.'" Lendaria@crystyll: "Regulators. Tha' could be it... We've heard very little to date..." B'Atar@anncarise: "They are a secretive people, to outsiders at least." Lendaria@crystyll: "Y'all don't really have any interaction wit'em then?" B'Atar@anncarise: "Only the one long ago, shortly after we first took to the stars. Anyone alive then have long since undergone Dalvodan, and all we have are historical records." Lendaria@crystyll: "Too bad. Sounds like we'll be encounterin'em sooner or later so b'good t'prepare best we can" B'Atar@anncarise: "All I know is that your technology will likely be scrutinized. To what criteria, I cannot say." Lendaria@crystyll: "Fair enough. Well, s'good to know at least we'se gettin' close to tha' time!" B'Atar@anncarise: "I am sorry I cannot provide you with more. But if you have any further questions of how to deal with Falen, I will be able to answer." Lendaria@crystyll: "Hard t'gauge really without knowin' th'situation s'well. I know we said best he don't know ya here, but will ya want t'observe our interaction an' advise remotely?" B'Atar@anncarise: "Through surveillance equipment? That may be an optimal arrangement." Lendaria@crystyll: "Tha' can be arranged. An' we can set up a discrete comline so y'all be able t'guide an' advise me if anythin' unexpected comes up" B'Atar@anncarise: "Excellent. I will observe and advise, then." Lendaria@crystyll smiles, "Then I reckon it's about time we'se head over an'see how he's doin'" B'Atar@anncarise nods and stands. Lendaria@crystyll stands as well and leads them to sickbay
View Act III
NPC@annpc#5570 FX | After spending some time comforting Falen, the Valley Forge reaches the Lomren homeworld of Lomsett, where they are invited to visit. They take Falen with them as they beam in, since the - NPC@annpc#5570: - Death-Hunter did not wish to startle him and make him try to run again. Lendaria@crystyll looks around briefly after materializing, but remains more focused on Falen's reactions for the time being NPC@annpc#5570 FX | The team and Falen materializes on a transporter pad in the interior of a building. Two female and one male Lomren awaits them as they arrive. Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah would step forward from the group to greet them NPC@annpc#5570 | Falen glances around as well, "I'm home? I don't recognize this particular place, but it's definitely in the city..." NPC@annpc#5570 | One of the females step forward, "Hello. You're the ones who retrieved Falen, then?" Lendaria@crystyll smiles, "Tha's right Falen. This is ya home city ya told me all 'bout!" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah smiles to the greeting female, "Yes, that is us. I'm Captain Se'Lai" NPC@annpc#5570 | Female: "Thank you, Captain Se'Lai. I am Derini, an official here at the Gensang City Port." NPC@annpc#5570 | Derini: "We can see to Falen from here." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "Yes, we are eager to guide him into safe hands" NPC@annpc#5570 | Derini nods to the two other Lomren, who step up to Falen. NPC@annpc#5570 | Male: "It's alright. You're home now. You'll be safe here." Lendaria@crystyll spots the approach and nudges Falen, "Ooh, I think this's gotta be our escort!" NPC@annpc#5570 | Falen looks to Lennie and gives her a small smile, "Thank you again for bringing me back home." Lendaria@crystyll: "Jus'... try an' remember t'let 'em help ya, yeah? Else they might not let me come see ya again before we leave" she smiles NPC@annpc#5570 | Falen nods, "I'll behave, I promise." NPC@annpc#5570 | He steps off the pad with the two, who leads him away. Lendaria@crystyll gives him a cheery wave, saddening slightly as she watches him move out of view NPC@annpc#5570 | Derini speaks again once they are out of earshot, "Those were Caregivers of the Crematorium. I was not supposed to introduce them until Falen had left, in case the name startled him." NPC@annpc#5570 | Derini: "I suspect you are already somewhat informed of our customs?" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "A little, perhaps. Though I suspect mostly regarding the situation with Falen" NPC@annpc#5570 | Meanwhile, Silvestrie steps off the transporter pad, tapping his combadge to inform the Valley Forge that Falen is away and the Death-Hunter can come down. NPC@annpc#5570 | Derini: "Yes, it is unfortunate that you had to know us through such an ordeal. On behalf of the Lomren people, I apologize for any trouble this has caused you." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah shakes her head, smiling, "Not at all. I'm just glad we were able to get the bottom of it and see him safely into the right hands. Oh, we do still have his shuttle in our hangar too. That + Lendaria@crystyll: + should really be returned to it's rightful place" NPC@annpc#5570 | Derini: "That belongs here at the port, actually. I'll arrange for its retrieval." NPC@annpc#5570 FX | The Death-Hunter materializes behind them on the pad, still fully armoured and masked. NPC@annpc#5570 | Derini addresses him quieter than she does Keelah, a slight sense of nervousness visible across her body, "Welcome back, Hunter." NPC@annpc#5570 | The Death-Hunter nods a silent greeting as he steps off the pad. NPC@annpc#5570 FX | Another transporter beam begins forming and Derini quickly takes out a small PADD to check it, "Wait, there's not supposed to be another arrival..." Lendaria@crystyll watches curiously out of the way with the others NPC@annpc#5570 FX | A suited person materializes, their figure only slightly recognizable as female through the completely sealed suit. NPC@annpc#5570 | Suited Woman: "This one simply had to visit! This one saw the Valley Forge arrive in-" NPC@annpc#5570 FX | Another figure suddenly materializes behind her, clad in the same armour and mask as the Death-Hunter, but through the open slots, pink skin and red eyes are visible. NPC@annpc#5570 | This Hunter sets his hand on the woman's shoulder, holding her back, "Nima." NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "Apologies, Battu. Nima could not resist meeting the famous Keelah!" NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu: "Nima! Death-Hunters are not supposed to use names while masked." NPC@annpc#5570 | The Death-Hunter who was on the VF observes the two and gives Battu a curt nod, "Hunter." NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu returns the gesture, "Hunter." NPC@annpc#5570 | The first Death-Hunter turns and exits. Lendaria@crystyll continues to watch the unusual interaction, a brief glance to the Captain at hearing her name mentioned NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu steps in front of Nima, "This one offers apologies. Nima is of the Doshaie Tribe. Doshaie are not known for...understanding behaviour." NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "Nima-Doshaie Dos Shaie'Paxe'Foree Nos Da-Paxe. Nima is pleased to meet everyone!" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah steps up to greet him with a smile, "No apology is necessary... Hunter. For us, learning to work with new cult-..." she peers past him to Nima, "Nima is Arshai. From the New World?" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima nods: "As is Battu!" NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu sighs, "Since Nima has already broken the rule for Battu...this one is Battu-Inuze Dos Take'Haxe Nos Zonu Tashu-a-Exoishai." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah's smile brightens, "Well, you two are the last thing I expected to encounter here" NPC@annpc#5570 | Derini: "They are here as part of an exchange program with the New World. Nima works with our doctors and scientists, while the Hunter learns the ways of our Death-Hunters." NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "Yes, the a-Exoishai are a fascinating people. The unique biological condition is...unique!" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "Isn't that something, it's always a pleasure to come across more Arshai branching out. Especially those so... enthusiastic" she chuckles at Nima NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu: "a-Exoishai is the name for the Lomren in Arshai-Tae. The word means Ageless People." Lendaria@crystyll: "Then ya friend's certainly not wrong. I've-a never encountered a species like 'em!" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima suddenly takes notice of Lennie and turns her attention to her, "This one is Orion. Nima believes Nima has heard of this one from Anaru. Lenna, yes?" Lendaria@crystyll smiles, "Lennie. But close enough! Who's, ah... Anaru?" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "Anaru-Doshaie Dos Shaie'Paxee'Foree Nos Du-Run is another member of the Doshaie tribe nearby. Anaru works on Vector Base, would have a similar suit to Nima!" NPC@annpc#5570 | Kazra: "I think I remember...he's the one that took scans of everyone, right?" Lendaria@crystyll: "Oh!" she chuckles, "Yes, I certainly remember th'scannin' fad!" NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu chuckles, "Yes, that sounds like Anaru." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "So is this association with Anaru how you came to know of us?" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "Yes! Nima has some of the scans Anaru made! ...was that too much?" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "As long as they're being put to good use. That is why they were donated after all" NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu: "This one has heard of Keelah and the Valley Forge previously from the Supreme Commander. This one was aware that the ship was coming in this direction and would likely pass by Lomsett." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah, "Aah of course, my dear old friend. How is your Supreme Commander these days? Keeping out of trouble?" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima nudges Battu slightly, "And this one didn't bother telling Nima!" NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu: "Nima was already more than occupied with studying the a-Exoishai. This one is not aware of the Supreme Commander's present circumstances, but this one has not heard of any starship - NPC@annpc#5570: - engagements of note." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah, "Well, as my husband would say; no news is good news" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "But silence is boring. Fortunately, Nima is a scientist and there is always something that can be studied." Lendaria@crystyll: "One after mah own heart" she grins, "Ya focus on exobiology too I'm-a guessin'? Given th'aforementioned study o'these lovely folks" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima nods, "Nima studies other peoples and medicines and the a-Exoishai are a great opportunity!" Lendaria@crystyll: "Welp..." looks to Kazra with a grin, "Seems we'se found our first stop on this tour!" NPC@annpc#5570 | Kazra grins back, "Seems so!" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "Nima helps the a-Exoishai with researching medicines and treatments and does Nima's own research on the a-Exoishai too." NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu: "As awkward as the Doshaie are at times, there is no mistaking the intellectual capabilities of the tribe." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "Well it sounds good to me, as long as we're not missing any necessary protocol for visiting here?" She looks back to their host NPC@annpc#5570 | Derini: "Not at all! Your ship has already informed us of your arrival, and that's all we require. Of course if you want our laws in detail, I can pass it along. Each region and even cities - NPC@annpc#5570: - often have small differences, but such minor offenses from visitors are generally overlooked. The basics of our laws are simple, or at least nothing any civilization we've met have found jarring." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "I am certain my officers will be in good hands with Nima here. While you all go studying, perhaps Malcolm and I shall explore the city itself" NPC@annpc#5570 | Derini: "You are free to do so! But you'll probably want a map, Gensang is a very large city." Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah: "That would be very helpful, yes" NPC@annpc#5570 | Derini smiles and waves Keelah and Silvestrie along, "Right this way!" Lendaria@crystyll | Keelah follows with Silvestrie, looking back to the others, "We'll see you back on the ship when you're done" NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu meanwhile looks to Nima, "Keep out of trouble. On second thought, this one should probably keep an eye on Nima." Lendaria@crystyll chuckles NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "Nima will be fine!" NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu: "This one has not forgotten the time Nima stole a Husk head." NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "Nima borrowed the head. For research." Lendaria@crystyll folds her arms, observing with an entertained smile as she glances to Kazra briefly NPC@annpc#5570 | Kazra watches the banter, just as amused. NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "Anyways, Nima will take everyone to Nima's lab!" Lendaria@crystyll: "Sounds good, lead on!" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima steps over to a console and taps it before stepping onto the pad, "Long walk, this is faster!" Lendaria@crystyll follows, still smiling at the Mia'esque demenour NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu: "Nima is not supposed to use port consoles without author-" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "Fill out the forms later!" NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu sighs as they begin transporting... NPC@annpc#5570 FX | They materialize in a sizable lab space. The main lab is enclosed, but a side room with a desk offers a spectacular view out into the city beyond. NPC@annpc#5570 FX | https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/judgedredd/images/b/bc/640px-Dredd-Film-City-View.png/revision/latest?cb=20140605041837 NPC@annpc#5570 FX | There is actually a Husk head sitting on the desk, Leviathan-style. Lendaria@crystyll 's gaze drifts towards it curiously, but resists enquiring straight after it NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu: "This one should be careful. Nuldor bites will induce Dalvodan." Lendaria@crystyll: "Nuldor. I assume tha's a proper name an' not, like... a pet name?" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "That is a very very old myth. Nuldor is the term used to describe an a-Exoishai after Dalvodan." NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "The term is more official than Husks, but Nuldor are essentially Husks. What remains of the body is barely as complex as the simplest organisms." NPC@annpc#5570: ((of the mind!)) Lendaria@crystyll: "So I'm-a guessin' ya mainly be studying Dalvodan 'ere?" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "The Dalvodan is certainly one of the most interesting processes about the a-Exoishai. A result of the a-Exoishai's unique nature!" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "Nima mainly studies what makes the a-Exoishai different, but Nima does research in more common things to help the a-Exoishai develop treatments too." Lendaria@crystyll: "Im-a curious wha' ya learned so far 'bout 'em. We only had a lil' time wit' Falen" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "Nima has learned many things. Nima knows that an enzyme normally only in mutated cells is in large quantities in every e-Exoishai which is responsible for the cells being able to - NPC@annpc#5570: - duplicate indefinitely. This mechanic will not work when applied to other species because the cells are not designed that way." NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "Even if an Arshai or Orion is genetically engineered to produce the enzyme, the enzyme will simply cause the cells to grow out of control and be fatal. The a-Exoishai cells have a - NPC@annpc#5570: - way of regulating multiplication and ways to detect malfunctioning cells if some do mutate." NPC@annpc#5570 | She steps up to a console, pulling up some displays. Lendaria@crystyll follows, observing with interest NPC@annpc#5570 | Kazra reads the display as well, "That's interesting. They don't just produce a lot of telomerase. I was wondering why they didn't just develop cancerous cells eventually. It seems their body - NPC@annpc#5570: - naturally knows how to target cancer cells or anything else resulting from mutation. Which means..." NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "That the a-Exoishai are at an evolutionary dead end. That, or the a-Exoishai are an engineered species, like the Jem'Hadar." NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "Either way, a-Exoishai are incapable of evolving further. Nima has never seen another species like that, another natural one that is!" Lendaria@crystyll: "We'd speculated 'bout engineerin' some point in their past too, but found no way to prove either way" NPC@annpc#5570 | Kazra: "Immune to aging or mutation, that certainly could be engineered, but evolution often does some really surprising things on its own." NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima nods, "Nima certainly cannot prove whether the a-Exoishai are engineered. Even with Arshai knowledge on genetics, markers of engineering will just look natural after so many cycles." Lendaria@crystyll: "So wha'bout this debilitatin' affliction o'theirs? Don't s'pose ya on th'verge of any breakthroughs t'help 'em wit'it?" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "Oh, Arshai genetic engineering can prevent Dalvodan." NPC@annpc#5570 | Kazra: "Really?" Lendaria@crystyll doubletakes, really not expecting such a nonchalant response NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "By removing the enzyme production and causing a-Exoishai to age and die. But that gives a-Exoishai a lifespan of about one hundred to two hundred cycles." NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "As opposed to the usual four hundred to five hundred cycles before Dalvodan sets in. And aging has other negative effects the a-Exoishai would rather not suffer either." NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "So yes, Nima can prevent Dalvodan, but by trading one problem for another. There is no solution. All people die." Lendaria@crystyll: "I guess a miracle cure's a bit much t'ask" she chuckels morosely, obviously still hurting for her time with Falen NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu: "Unfortunately no. The Arshai solution for Dalvodan simply kills the a-Exoishai before there is a chance to undergo Dalvodan. Most would prefer to live over twice as long at prime - NPC@annpc#5570: - physical condition for the price of needing to give up life willingly at the end." Lendaria@crystyll: "Y'know, when ya put it like tha'... I think I'd go th'same way" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima nods, "Even a Doshaie who always exists in cold conditions and uses suits like Nima's cannot live for as long as an a-Exoishai normally does before Dalvodan sets in." NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu: "The a-Exoishai have studied genetic engineering as well and come to the same result. That is why the a-Exoishai decide to bear with Dalvodan." Lendaria@crystyll: "So ya mentioned other work on general treatments an' stuff too?" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "Nima uses Nima's familiarity of other species and Nima's knowledge of Arshai techniques and medicines to help the a-Exoishai. The a-Exoishai do not age, but can still be injured or - NPC@annpc#5570: - infected by certain bacteria and viruses." Lendaria@crystyll: "S'good tha' ya can put ya research from other cultures t'use 'ere in helpin' 'em" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "The point of obtaining knowledge is to use the knowledge to make things better. Some members of the Doshaie have become too obsessed with learning and forget the purpose of learning in - NPC@annpc#5570: - the first place." NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu nods, "As much as this one likes to mock Nima, Nima is certainly one of the better ones of the Doshaie tribe. Most willing to leave the New World and brave the unknown are." Lendaria@crystyll: "Can't have been easy, leavin' in th'first place" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "Oh Nima will return at some point. But Nima simply cannot resist the chance to study and work with such an interesting people! Lennie is far from home too, Lennie must understand." Lendaria@crystyll smiles, "Yeah. Course, was kinda a no brainer f'me wha' bein' raised wit' no home an' all" NPC@annpc#5570 | Nima: "Right, Orion is not a nice planet anymore, no? Nima is used to seeing New World Orions at home on Vue-En or in the Colonial Fleet." Lendaria@crystyll: "Yeah... we'se got a nice new home now, but I never get t'growin' up there" NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu: "The Arshai have lost a homeworld as well. But Arshai living now have grown up in new homes. Except the Supreme Commander and a few rare others." Lendaria@crystyll: "Yeah, I remember learnin'bout it from our friend Mana" NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu: "This one has heard of that name- an exile from EereE space like the Supreme Commander's mother was, yes?" Lendaria@crystyll: "Yeah, tha's her!" NPC@annpc#5570 | Battu: "This one has heard of Mana then, but not had a chance to meet Mana yet, as this one has been on Lomsett for the past few cycles." Lendaria@crystyll: "Didn't honestly expect ya t'have" she smiles

NARRATIVE:
The situation first arose when we detected what appeared to be two small craft on long range sensors, with indicators of weapon discharges. Given the proximity we moved to investigate and render assistance if needed, to receive a request for assistance from the pursued vessel. Due to existing battle damage, neither craft was able to receive communications from us and the pursuing vessel departed shortly after our arrival. As scans indicated weakened lifesigns aboard the remaining craft, it was brought on board and we moved to investigate.
After securing the vessel, CMDR Meel carried out a preliminary scan of the occupant to find him in less than optimal health and showing signs of neurological failure. Because of this, he was immediately transferred to sickbay while LCDR Keliaya and her team investigated the craft itself. Arriving in sickbay a short time later, we learned that the patient was suffering a form of degenerative neural disorder, similar to Alzheimer's Disease in humans, or Tuvan Syndrome in Vulcanoids. As CMDR Meel was otherwise engaged with her medical diagnostics, I was allocated to attempt communication with the patient. A pleasant dialogue ensued in which I came to learn a great deal about him and his people. It was clear that he was presenting symptoms of his neural disorder, as his demeanor during this first conversation was pleasant and timid; almost a polar opposite to the tense and panicked individual first pleading for aid.
We left him resting after a while to reconvene with the senior staff and collate our findings. While this meeting was underway, an alert was received from sickbay that he had awakened as his former - panic stricken - self, and so we immediately relocated to tend to him. Fortunately, he remembered me from our earlier conversation and my presence had a sufficiently soothing effect on him, that we were able to subdue him without force and encourage him back to resting. After seeing this effect, i opted to remain at his side in case he awoke in a panic again. This afforded me significant opportunity to speak further with him when he was awake and continue learning about his culture.
Some time later - after discerning his point of origin from his ship's navigational computer, and setting course to return him per his (unaware) wishes - we were approached by the original pursuing vessel, who was seemingly able to make contact this time. I was not present for that dialogue, but understand that the situation was amicably explained to the point where he was invited on board to discuss in detail. At this time, I was called to meet with him along with the senior staff. We learned that this is a natural state for their people, who possess a unique trait in the form a genetic mutation which allows their entire cell structure to adapt and rejuvenate much as cancerous cells typically do. The result of this is an almost endless physical condition (subject to disease, injury etc. still) and the natural decline for the species actually being one of mental breakdown as opposed to the physical failings most are more familiar with. Seemingly, the result of overstretched physical lifespans against the limitations of their brain chemistry results in the biological equivalent of a computer storage drive being overfilled and fragmented. This leads to a degenerative disorder which - if allowed to run its course - can result in a complete devolution back to basic feral instincts.
It was unilaterally decided that our patient - Falen - had to be returned to his people, as we were already in the process of doing, and that his pursuer the 'Death Hunter', would make the journey with us whilst remaining incognito to Falen. I was again selected to maintain a presence with Falen, after consulting with the Death Hunter and continuing with his support via remote monitoring. Once we arrived at their home system, we proceeded to escort Falen to the port and successfully encouraged him into the care of the appropriate people who were standing ready to take him in and commence his preparation for their customary ritual for his phase of life.
An unexpected occurrence whilst at the port, was the arrival of a pair of Arshai who were based with the Lomren; one another Death Hunter and the other a researcher. CMDR Meel and I accompanied the researcher - Nima - to her laboratory where we were able to continue gathering data on the Lomren as well as build upon existing rapports to learn more about the Arshai's presence here.
