The dedication of a specific ship for the transportation of the Federation President was a tradition started by President Jonathan Archer. The inspiration came from the customs of President Archer’s region of origin on Earth, which used to operate a plane known as Air Force One to transport its president. Due to this, the USS Executive is frequently called Executive One.
The name has become so ubiquitous in Federation society that many have taken to calling all dedicated transports for leaders as [Name] One, even though it is rarely the actual formal name of the ship. This is the reason the Federation often refers to the Klingon Chancellor’s personal flagship as Qo'noS One.
The Intrepid-class, which had proven itself as an excellent VIP transport for Starfleet flag personnel during the Dominion War, was selected as the next Executive One. One of the Intrepid vessels under construction at the time was commissioned as the USS Executive-D and launched in 2376.
The Executive-D would undergo a refit just five years after its launch, implementing some of the technologies brought back by the USS Voyager from the Delta Quadrant, as well as other improvements to the Intrepid design made by its crew. It underwent another major refit in 2402 and remains in service as Executive One to this day.
HISTORY OF THE EXECUTIVE
USS Executive (NCC 525)
Einstein Class
Though President Archer was responsible for beginning the construction of the USS Executive, he never actually travelled aboard it as the President of the Federation. The first USS Executive, an Einstein-class light cruiser, was completed in 2196, four years after Archer’s last term as President. He was present at the ship’s launch, where he personally gave the order for its departure from the shipyard.
USS Executive (NCC 525-A)
Saladin Class
In 2248, the Einstein-class Executive One was replaced by a Saladin-class frigate, a class which was the Einstein’s spiritual successor, sporting a similar single-nacelle design. The Executive-A is known for several journeys during the eventful second half of the 23rd century, such as ferrying the President to safety in the first Federation-Klingon War.
Alongside most of the fleet, the USS Executive-A underwent a major refit in the 2270s. It would go on to transport the President to the famous Khitomer Conference, though it did not participate in the battle above Khitomer to prioritize orbital overwatch for additional cloaked Klingon vessels.
USS Executive (NCC 525-B)
Saladin Class
With the turn of the century, the Federation determined that it was time for a new Executive One. The Miranda-class USS Executive-B was launched in 2303 and remained in service for over six decades. Despite being the longest serving Executive One to date, it also possesses the least eventful history due to the peace enjoyed by the Federation in that time.
USS Executive (NCC 525-C)
New Orleans Class
Following the disastrous Battle of Wolf 359, Starfleet decided that the President required more protection than the Miranda-class was capable of providing. The USS Des Moines, a more modern New Orleans-class frigate, was renamed the USS Executive-C in 2370.
The Executive-C would see the shortest service of all Executive One vessels, as it came under attack by enemy forces in 2375 during the late stages of the Dominion War. Though the President’s life was protected, the ship took major damage and would go on to be decommissioned.
