View Episode
In the Heart of Unity, it is business as usual. The camera pans through the various diverse ship styles of the Coalition, narrowing in towards the Trinity Province, where Gaton, Chlasi, and to a slightly lesser extent Erudis ship designs are by far the most prominent
However, we don't zoom into any of these ships but instead begin to follow a Ferry as it makes its way towards the Chlasi Temple
Multiple smaller craft come and go from the Temple. Several other Ferries can be seen, as well as a Starfleet and a Romulan shuttle and a non-descript alien raider
The Ferry touches down on the large exterior landing area of the Temple, where many more small craft are parked. The Ferry doors open and Mariel steps out, wearing her Chlasi robes, followed by Kayleigh and Ailmna in their cadet uniforms
Mariel:"This is the Chlasi Temple. You have some friends here, right?"
Kayleigh:"Well, I know you if that counts?"
Ailmna chuckles, "I think she means me and the Rangers you saw heading here when we arrived."
Kayleigh:"Of course. I knew that, just providing clarification..."
Ailmna smirks, "Yeah, a few Rangers came here for training, but I haven't visited yet."
Mariel smiles, "That's why I thought I'd bring you along for a tour!"
An Attendant, recognizing Mariel's robes, gives her a nod but doesn't approach her as they usually do with guests
Mariel returns the greetings and begins heading into the temple
Ailmna: "Speaking of the Rangers training here, most of them are Romulans. I don't know if it's the specific people I know, but I'm noticing a lot more Romulans gaining these abilities than others. Well, other species that weren't psionic to begin with, at least."
Kayleigh:"I think because many Romulans already had some psionic ability, that's why they're more numerous here"
Mariel nods, "There are a few Vulcans here in the temple too who've received a boost to their psionics and are still learning to master it. I think even the Vulcans didn't explore much of their psionic ability until recently, right Kay?"
Kayleigh:"Most likely not. There are those who practice the established techniques to mastery, but I can't imagine any being inclined to explore beyond that"
Mariel steps into a lift, "And Romulans haven't been separate from Vulcan for /that/ long, so you probably have the exact same psionic potential, you just never trained to use it like Vulcans do."
Ailmna: "I suppose so. Most of our physical differences are superficial, like the greener skin tint and pronounced head ridges. And even then that's just some Romulans, there's some of us who can pass for a Vulcan without any makeup or surgery. I'm no scientist, but I guess it makes sense we're not so different mind-wise either."
Kayleigh:"Indeed"
Ailmna: "What about you, Kayleigh? You can do mind melds and all that, right? Spock was able to do it, and he was half-human too."
Kayleigh:"I've... never really tried actually"
The lift comes to a stop and they exit into a large atrium
Mariel:"Right, you mostly grew up around Earth with your family in Starfleet, so you didn't have much of a chance to explore any psionics, did you?"
Kayleigh:"It's not just that. But I am still very young and yet to fully discipline my mind. It would be illogical to attempt to learn more advanced functions of the mind without mastering basic control"
Mariel:"Unless you suddenly start getting a boost to your abilities that you have to figure out how to master..."
Kayleigh:"That is a possibility still, albeit an unlikely one. Any latent ability at this point would have manifested. The only exception would be something reactive to an external catalyst of some sort"
Mariel:"I don't know if that's even possible. The temple is still getting a steady influx of new students, but that's because people are only just learning about this place or managing to make their way here. Like how I didn't come here right after I got my abilities either. I think most of us developed our abilities at more or less the same time, but there's always a chance that someone might have an ability dependent on some sort of catalyst..."
Ailmna: "Like if you ever tried a mind meld, maybe?"
Kayleigh hrms, "I am not aware of such a thing triggering a psionic awakening. But then, there is still so little we understand about these things anything is theoretically possible"
Mariel nods, "Even the Chlasi are learning more as we go. This whole awakening thing is new for everyone, even people who are familiar with psionics."
Kayleigh:"Well then, I suppose I shall have to be more mindful of inadvertently awakening some latent ability within myself"
Kayleigh sounds serious, but somehow also not at the same time
Ailmna: "You and me both, since our peoples are especially likely to develop these abilities by the looks of things..."
Mariel:"Anyways, I should head to training. You two feel free to explore around the public areas some more!"
Kayleigh nods, "We shall do so"
As Mariel parts ways and leaves Kayleigh and Ailmna to explore, the camera pans out, revealing a rugged-looking Vulcan male lurking in one of the hallways, observing the pair...
—
Two days after their visit to the Chlasi Temple, Kayleigh is in her usual cafe during some off-class time
As she enjoys her drink, she spots Ailmna making her way into the cafe
Kayleigh clears her shopping bags off the chair opposite her, placing them down beside her in anticipation of the approach
Ailmna does indeed approach, "Thought I'd find you here, Kayleigh."
Kayleigh:"Were you looking for me?"
Ailmna: "Oh no, I would've just commed you if I was. Came here to see more of this place, since our last visit was a little more eventful than what we thought we were getting into," she chuckles
Kayleigh:"I see, yes I was about to suggest that a comm would be more efficent were that the case. So by seeing more of the place, you mean coming back to the same cafe we visited previously?"
Ailmna: "I mean the whole shopping area, but I thought I'd come by the cafe. Had a feeling you'd be here, with how much you like your chosen spots and all," she smirks
Kayleigh:"I see. Well since you came here seeking me out, whilst not looking for me, would you care to join me?" she gestures to the freshly cleared seat
Ailmna takes a seat, eyeing the shopping bags now beside Kayleigh, "What'd you buy?"
Kayleigh glances to the small mountain, "Some outfits from the new Orion tailor that just opened up"
Ailmna: "Just /some/ outfits? You can fit my whole wardrobe in there!"
Kayleigh perks a brow and thinks on this a moment, "There are a few new pairs of shoes as well..."
Ailmna chuckles, "Can still fit my whole wardrobe in there... So, you like Orion fashion? Interesting choice for a Vulcan."
Kayleigh:"I have no special preference for it in particular, but the whole theme plays a significant part in the societal evolution here"
Ailmna: "What'd you mean by whole theme?"
Kayleigh:"Fashion; few things portray the rapid cross pollination of cultures at the Heart like it does"
Ailmna: "Well then, you should wear your Orion clothes around more when off-duty, instead of your uniform."
Kayleigh:"I do so when I normally come here. But I was doing some work at the annex this morning and came straight from there. When I come back tonight though, I will not be in uniform then as that would not be appropriate attire"
Ailmna: "You're coming back here tonight?"
Kayleigh:"Of course. It is a weekly custom"
Ailmna: "So you come here for shopping now, and later for...what? Clubbing? Drinking at the bar?"
Kayleigh:"Exactly, yes. It is quite the fascinating social gathering"
Ailmna: "Wait...you actually dance at the club?"
Kayleigh:"Naturally. It would be inappropriate to attend such a venue and not partake in the central activity"
Ailmna: "Huh. You embrace your human side more than I'd thought."
Kayleigh:"I was not aware that dancing was considered an explicity Human trait"
Ailmna: "Oh plenty of cultures do it, but it's much more human than Vulcan. Unless you're embracing the Romulan aspects of your Vulcan side..." she smirks
Kayleigh:"I believe I am embracing my Vulcan side as a matter of fact"
Ailmna: "Is that so?"
Kayleigh:"Yes. Many forget that Vulcans have a particular appreciation for arts. That is a very broad term which can include things like fashion, music and even dance"
Ailmna: "I don't think I've seen a Vulcan dance before."
Kayleigh:"I seldom see it either, outside of specific traditional events at any rate"
Ailmna: "And I haven't exactly attended any of your traditional events before. See, that's why I don't consider it a particularly Vulcan thing."
Kayleigh hrms, "I suppose from an outside perspective that is a reasonable assertion. And it would probably explain some of the looks I used to get there..."
Ailmna: "Yeah, most people probably aren't used to seeing a dancing Vulcan. Might get a few less weird looks if you dressed in Romulan clothes, with what we were saying the other day of our species being able to easily pass off as each other," she grins
Kayleigh:"That may have eased things early on, but it is of no consequence now"
Ailmna: "Right. I guess you're a regular around here now, aren't you?"
Kayleigh nods, "I believe that would be a fair estimation"
Ailmna's attention seems drawn by something as she looks over down at the promenade for a moment
Kayleigh follows her gaze, "See something?"
Kayleigh doesn't seem to notice anything off
Ailmna shakes her head, "I'm sure it was nothing. Just a little more alert after that changeling business last time."
Kayleigh:"Understandable"
Ailmna turns her attention back to the inside of the cafe, "So, where do you usually go for dancing? I assume it's not this cafe?"
Kayleigh shakes her head, "No, there is an adjoining district where the best clubs have started to form. It was originally an expansion of this one, but has since taken on an identity of it's own"
Ailmna: "I should visit there too, sometime. Any particular clubs you frequent or would like to recommend?"
Kayleigh hrms, "Let's see... I suppose it depends what you favor. There's Fortune but that's more of a casino with a dancefloor. Club Spirit has some fascinating psionic performances. Mint and The Avenue are both popular retro spots. The Dove is more modern and stylistic. The Queen Club is my most frequented owing to it's diversity"
Ailmna: "That is quite a selection. Psionic performances...what're those like?"
Kayleigh:"They normally involve a lot of telekenetics. Though you should be warned that club also has a reputation for using their psionics to cater to the more carnal scene"
Ailmna: "I'll...keep that in mind. What do you mean by retro spots? Are they retro Starfleet, like the colourful 23rd century look, something pre-warp, or something more local to the rim?"
Kayleigh:"It's more the music styles they favor. I'm not sure what it is The Avenue specializes in - something Klingon I think - but I know the Mint is what they call electroswing. It is very colourful so I suppose it is possible that there is some 23rd century influence there"
Ailmna: "I'm not very familiar with that time period myself, but I've heard some interesting things about it. Humans in particular seem rather fond of the time."
Kayleigh:"Yes, as has been evidence of late by our new modern history professor"
Ailmna nods, "That's the AI one, right? I think she wears a uniform from that time, too."
Kayleigh nods, "Professor LaRouche, yes. Apparently she actually hails from that time too"
Ailmna: "Really? I thought the Federation didn't have AI that, well, human until the 24th century, with Data and the emergency holograms."
Kayleigh:"I'm not sure either. I shall have to enquire with her at the next opportunity"
Ailmna stands, "Anyways, I'll continue my exploration of this place. Thanks for the chat, Kayleigh. And enjoy your new clothes," she smiles
Kayleigh:"Enjoy your exploration"
—
Curious about what Kay told her of the nightlife, Ailmna returns to the district later that night and eventually finds and settles on checking out the Queen Club that Kay mentioned
If the lively atmosphere of the district at this hour didn't sell it, the long queue waiting to get into this club certainly does...
Ailmna stands impatiently in line, frequently looking over the others to see how long it would take to get in
As is so often at a prestige club like this, the line hardly seems to move at all. To the point where she suspects the little shuffling along they do get is from people further ahead giving up and going elsewhere
Ailmna sighs, contemplating giving up as well
As she fights with the dilemma of staying or ducking under the holographic barrier and going elsewhere, she sees the back of a familiar pink bun walk past
Ailmna immediately notices the pink bun and steps out of the line to follow after her, taking a moment to make sure it's who she thinks it is
There is no mistaking the combination of the pointed ears and the pink bun. Although the rest of the ensemble understandably throws her off since it is more fitting to this venue than the uniform she is normally seen in
Ailmna approaches behind her, "Kayleigh? The line starts back there..."
Kayleigh:pauses and turns, "Ailmna? What are you doing here?"
Ailmna smiles, "Well I asked you about club recommendations for a reason, didn't I?"
Kayleigh:"Had I known you intended to come to this one tonight I would have invited you to join me. Still, it is fortunate you spotted me when you did" she turns to carry on walking
Ailmna follows along, "Don't tell me this place is invitation only..."
Kayleigh:"Not at all, as you rightly pointed out the queue is back there" she glances while walking past, close enough to the entrance to be able to hear the inside now
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFGPXtXADFs
Ailmna: "But you've got a special pass or something?"
Kayleigh:"There is no physical pass as such. But I am welcome here" she approaches the towering Lupan bouncer who simply gives a broad grin baring many sharp fangs as he bows his head, "My Queen!" and -
Kayleigh:- gestures for her to enter, much to the dismay of the folks near enough to the front of the queue to watch
Ailmna glances between the Lupan bouncer and Kayleigh with surprise
As Kay passes, the Lupan promptly extends his arm behind her, blocking Ailmna's path with a stern growl, "No Pawns!"
Kayleigh:stops and turns, "No it's alright. She is a Queen tonight"
The Lupan looks Ailmna up and down judgementally before giving a nod and letting her through
Ailmna follows through, "You sure you're not some kind of VIP? That Queen talk certainly does sound like it."
Kayleigh:"I only said there was no actual pass or anything. A VIP would be an accurate description. She heads into what could almost be perceived as an oversized warp core. A central holographic shaft spanning several floors which features exotic dancers at different levels. It cants away at an angle though, not completely vertical, which staggers each of the 5 subsequent floors
Ailmna looks around as she steps in, "I can see why you like this place. It certainly is grander than anything we had in the old neutral zone, that's for sure."
Kayleigh:"This is the Pawn level, it is where everyone comes in at first" she moves towards an open sided elevator where a waitress greets them with complementary drinks
Ailmna takes a drink, glancing up, "And let me guess, the highest is Queen?"
Kayleigh:sips the drink while the elevator slowly takes them up, "Exactly, yes"
As they ascend, the place becomes even more impressive as they see that despite the completely open appearance from the entrance, each level has it's own distinct look and completely different -
Kayleigh:- music playing too
Ailmna: "Okay, this place's got even more detail than I thought. Probably rivals any core Federation club at this rate, least from what I've heard about them..."
Kayleigh:"I did not experience much on Earth, but this certainly does outshine the best of them"
They arrive on the Queens floor. Liveliest of them all, but at the same time less crowded...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CzQoFm74lM
Ailmna: "So how'd you become a 'Queen,' anyways?"
Kayleigh:"Honestly, I am still not completely certain myself. Regular visitation seems the most likely, but there is no consistent rule about it either that I know of"
Ailmna: "Wait, so you just got promoted to Queen without even knowing how?"
Kayleigh:"Curious, isn't it? Anyway, I came here to dance first. You are welcome to join me, or the bar is over there if you prefer refreshment and observation first"
Ailmna: "I'll look around first. Enjoy your dancing, Kay!"
Kayleigh:"I shall do so" she heads off to the dancefloor, weaving through the crowd and mingling like a pro. As it becomes clear that her social standing in this club may have something to do with the 'Queen' status, the reaction of many clearly high spending patrons to her attire seems to be the final argument for it. Until she starts dancing; not only effortlessly seeming to put an Orion pro to shame, but working the crowd so seamlessly that after a while a keen observer would not that she is even working different groups on the dancefloor, and always seems to have a fresh drink in her hand despite having gone nowhere near the bar or a waitress...
Ailmna meanwhile proceeds to the bar, getting herself a drink and watching Kayleigh and the rest of the club
Kayleigh:continues to work the dancefloor in this manner, quickly becoming the centre of attention and welcoming it. To anyone other than Kay, it is clear why the club made her a 'Queen' with everyone more fired up around her, and of course more guys buying more drinks for some reason
After a little bit, Ailmna makes her way to the dance floor, starting on the outside and trying to slowly and naturally work her way in towards Kayleigh
Kayleigh:soon works her way around to join Ailmna, but not before a few well placed hands on arms and flashes of interest in other patrons land her two fresh drinks, one which she delivers to Ailmna
Ailmna takes the drink and takes a sip, "Thanks. You can hear me well over this music, right?" She asks as she dances away
Kayleigh:nods, "Yes, I'm quite used to it now" the way she holds herself here, even how she moves and talks, it is hard to believe it is the same Kay she is used to seeing
Ailmna nods back, "I can see...well, since this is very much your turf, I'm going to ask you to take the lead."
Kayleigh:continues doing her thing, with movement through the crowd as fluids as the moves she uses along the way. Sometimes disappearing from Ailmna's view, and then reappearing elsewhere
Ailmna glances away from the dance floor several times before making her way close to Kayleigh again when she reappears nearby, "Okay...can you get us to the bathrooms, as naturally and inconspicuously as you can?"
Kayleigh:seems confused as to the need to be inconspicuous, but figures some people are just modest perhaps. She nods and takes Ailmna's hand, bringing her along more closely as she grinds and weaves across the dancefloor towards the bathrooms
Ailmna acts naturally like she belongs as she follows along
Kayleigh:arrives, "Was that sufficiently inconspicuous?"
Ailmna nods, "Very good work, Kay. This is /definitely/ your turf." She steps aside as a pair of female Orions exit the bathroom, talking and laughing. She doesn't enter however, watching them until they are out of sight before quickly moving over to a nearby door to a maintenance area and tapping on the panel beside it
Kayleigh:weatches curiously
Ailmna frowns as the panel beeps red and tries again. This time, the door slides open and she darts into the door, waving Kayleigh along
Kayleigh:"If I had known tonight would entail this I would have worn a different dress..." she grumbles, entering after Ailmna
Ailmna quickly closes the door behind her, half-whispering, "Sorry, I didn't exactly plan for this either. Just...trust me."
The Romulan begins walking down the maintenance hallway beyond
Kayleigh:"What is this about?"
Ailmna: "Shh." She puts a finger to her lips as they approach an intersection. They pause for a moment and she continues on towards the right
Kayleigh:looks at her but stays quiet as she follows
Ailmna walks some way down this hall before pausing. She stands still, looking around with a little confusion
The Romulan seems to sniff the air for a moment before she suddenly lunges right, plunging her arms...through the wall?
Kayleigh:doubletakes
A layer of wall flickers and fizzles away to reveal itself as a holographic projection, and Ailmna is seen grappling with a Vulcan man- the same Vulcan from the Chlasi Temple, but now wearing a civilian engineer's jumpsuit
Ailmna: "Clever, using Spock's tactics...but unlike that susse'thrai Sela...I'm a full blooded Romulan!"
Vulcan: "No, wait! I am not-"
Ailmna swings a leg around to trip the Vulcan, but the Vulcan manages hold his ground, and taking advantage of Ailmna having only one leg planted, counter-trips her, sending both of them tumbling to the floor
Vulcan: "I am only-"
Kayleigh:quickly moves to aid her friend by restraining the supposed Vulcan
The Vulcan tries but fails to pin Ailmna down. The Romulan swings her legs around him and flips him over, turning the tide of the grapple. The Vulcan does a good job avoiding being pinned down as well before Kayleigh joins in. She manages to pin down one of his arms and he stops struggling
Ailmna: "Why are you following us?"
Vulcan: "Listen. I am not here to harm you."
Kayleigh:"That does not mean you are not an enemy"
Vulcan: "I understand your caution, with all that is going on. If you will release me and let me explain..."
Ailmna: "We haven't gagged you. Explain now."
Vulcan: "I was...observing her," his eyes look over to Kayleigh, clearly indicating to her and not Ailmna
Ailmna: "So you were stalking her across the Sphere. That makes you so much less suspicious."
Kayleigh:leans away slightly, taken aback, "Many people observe me at Queens. However- wait, across the Sphere?"
Ailmna nods, "I saw him when we were at the Temple, and again in the shopping area. Both times rather briefly, like he was spying on us discretely. Or you in particularly, as it seems." She turns her gaze back to the Vulcan. "Who are you and what do you want with her?"
Vulcan: "You will not find my name or identity in any databases, but-"
Ailmna: "You are doing a very bad job of making yourself seem innocent."
Vulcan: "Allow me to finish-"
Ailmna: "I should just choke him out and hand him over to Security..."
Vulcan: "She is my granddaughter!"
Ailmna blinks, "...what?"
Kayleigh:"I could call- wait, what?"
Vulcan: "That is why I have been observing you. I was...determining what strategy I should utilize to approach you, if approaching was even wise at all."
Ailmna: "Okay, this just got even weirder..."
Kayleigh:mutters, "My... grandfather...?"
Vulcan: "That is the truth. You do not know me because my records had been stricken from all Starfleet and Federation databases by the infiltrators being exposed across the galaxy of late. Now that others are finally growing aware of this threat, I have been working with Starfleet Intelligence, which brought me to this Sphere."
Kayleigh:"But why this subversive approach? Is it because my father isn't here?"
Vulcan: "No. It is because you and your mother do not know me, and I have been unsure of the best method by which to make myself known. I...had not anticipated being here in the Heart, and find myself unprepared for such a meeting."
Ailmna looks to Kayleigh, "You believe this man?"
Kayleigh:"It is an unusual story. However that may only make it more plausible. If he were to invent a reason for being here, there are far more believable lies he could tell"
Ailmna nods, "I suppose that's true. That story wouldn't be my go-to deception."
Kayleigh:"Since we clearly capable of overpowering him, I suggest we at least release him from this pin. It is not the most comfortable position to hold in this dress..."
Ailmna cautiously releases him and stands back up, "Try anything and I won't think twice about knocking you out."
Kayleigh:does the same, straightening her unsuitable outfit in the process
The Vulcan gets back to his feet as well, "I have no intention to. It was you who initiated the attack."
Kayleigh:"How did you know he was here anyway?"
Ailmna: "Romulan females have an exceptional sense of smell. Most of us usually dull it when among aliens to avoid being overwhelmed, but I was trained to control and tolerate it. When I need to, I can track just as well as a warrigul."
Vulcan: "And my rudimentary holographic projection was only visual. I had anticipated that your smell would be dulled, as is common with Vulcan females living among other species."
Kayleigh:"Impressive. It must be even more refined than a Vulcan's sense then" she looks to the new grandfather, "And how exactly were you observing us from here anyway?"
Vulcan: "I was observing you from inside the club, by the exit of the maintenance area. When you and your friend began approaching me, I retreated in here. The holographic camouflage was a backup measure I resorted to."
Ailmna: "You just carry a holographic projector on you?"
Vulcan: "Among other things. I have been evading the infiltrators and attempting to strike back at them for many years, after all."
Kayleigh:"I always thought my grandparents on my fathers side were just reclusive..."
The Vulcan raises a brow, "On your father's side?"
Kayleigh:"Well... yes. I know my mothers' parents, they are both quite elderly now. Also Human" her eyes narrow with renewed suspicion
Vulcan: "That cannot be correct. You are Vulcan on your mother's side."
Ailmna: "You're not from one of those alternate realities, are you?"
Vulcan: "No, my quantum signature matches this reality. Besides, our intel suggests that none of the other universes which have made contact with us so far have been infiltrated by the Survivors as we have, and my history could not have repeated there."
Kayleigh:"I am quite aware of my parentage, and my mother is very much Human" she looks to Ailmna, "It would appear that your initial assumption about him was correct"
Ailmna moves to restrain him again, but the Vulcan turns to Kayleigh
Vulcan: "Your mother is Captain T'Keel Se'Lai, is she not?"
Kayleigh:frowns in confusion, "She is not"
The Vulcan frowns as well, "And...you are not Cadet T'Pia?"
Kayleigh:"I am not"
Vulcan: "Interesting. I had not anticipated two half Vulcan, half human cadets in the same year at the same Academy annex."
Kayleigh:pinches the bridge of her nose, "So... you are T'Pia's grandfather?"
The Vulcan nods, "That is correct."
Ailmna: "Wait, so you followed the wrong cadet across the Heart?"
Vulcan: "It had not initially been my intention to approach my family. I have been here for several months and known of their presence, but remained within the Chlasi Temple. As I had previously stated, I was unsure whether approaching them would be wise. When I saw you at the Temple in a second-year cadet uniform, I had assumed you were Cadet T'Pia. A cursory scan confirmed your status as half human, and I began contemplating the prospect of approaching my granddaughter first, rather than my daughter."
Kayleigh:"So that means you are Professor Se'Lai's father then" she realizes
Vulcan: "I am."
Ailmna: "I don't suppose there's anyone who can verify your identity, with it conveniently being stricken from records and all?"
Vulcan: "There are a few. The one you are most likely to believe is Fleet Admiral Enelya Torin."
Kayleigh:"Or Professor Se'Lai"
Ailmna: "And now he wants us to get an audience with the Admiral. Is this some kind of ploy to get close for an assassination?"
Vulcan: "Certainly not. My daughter has never seen me, and is unlikely to recognize me."
Kayleigh:"Oh. Not Professor Se'Lai then. I suppose the Admiral is the only option we have then, not that a pair of cadets are likely to get an audience with the Admiral"
Vulcan: "Professor Se'Lai can get an audience with the admiral. However, I am even more unsure of how to approach her."
Kayleigh:"Given the approach you tried to take in figuring that out when you thought I was T'Pia, I would not like to imagine..." she looks to Ailmna, "The Professor seems our best option presently"
Ailmna nods, "But first before we go anywhere with him, I'd like to make sure he doesn't have any more weapons or...gadgets."
Vulcan: "That is a logical precaution. Search away."
Ailmna begins to pat him down, removing a device here and there
Ailmna: "How many of these things do you have...?"
Vulcan: "I was a Starfleet Engineer once."
Ailmna examines one of the confiscated devices, "A voice scrambler?"
Kayleigh:"I am sure that comes in useful at the Temple..."
Vulcan: "I worked with the Scryer Network for a time."
Ailmna: "A comm signal hijacker..."
Vulcan: "And Starfleet Intelligence."
Ailmna shakes her head, stepping back with an armful of devices, "This man's practically Romulan."
Vulcan: "I have worked alongside a number of former Tal Shiar operatives."
Kayleigh:"Coming from her, that is quite the complement I believe"
Vulcan: "Thank you."
Ailmna: "Okay, let's get him to the professor, shall we?"
—
After confiscating all his devices, Ailmna and Kayleigh takes the Vulcan to a Ferry, which proceeds back towards the Academy
Ailmna: "Sorry for disrupting your night out. Thought he was gonna be a threat to you."
Kayleigh shakes her head, "It is fortunate that things transpired as they have. Had this continued, you, I or someone else might have reacted far more assertively upon discovering him"
Ailmna: "True. I'm still not fully convinced he isn't an infiltrator himself..."
Kayleigh:"Likewise. That is why we are going to the Professor first. If she believes him, or at least sees enough validity to his claims for it to be feasible, then she can contact the Admiral for verification"
Ailmna: "It is getting late, you think the Professor might be asleep already?"
Kayleigh:"It is a distinct possibility, but given the circumstances I believe the disturbance is warranted"
Vulcan: "What about Cadet T'Pia? Do they live together, or does she stay in the same bunks as you?"
Kayleigh:"She lives with her mother, but I believe I have an approach which will shield her from the disruption"
Ailmna: "What's your plan?"
Kayleigh:"If we open a priority hail to the Professor, it should alert her directly. We can then call her away from her quarters to explain the situation, say at the annex mess hall or her classroom"
Ailmna: "Good thinking. Did you bring your combadge with you? Or can we do that from the Ferry?”
Ferry: "I am capable of opening a communications channel. Would you to open a communications channel?"
Ailmna nods, "Can you open one to Professor Se'Lai on the Annex?"
Ferry: "One moment..."
More than a moment later, Keelah's sleepy voice comes through the intercom through a slight yawn, "...Se'Lai..."
Ailmna: "Professor. Sorry for disturbing you, but we've got an urgent matter here."
Keelah takes a moment to register the voice, "Cadet... Ailmna? What is this about?"
Ailmna: "We've, well...this is a bit of a personal matter, so we should explain it in person. We can stop by your office once we touch down."
Keelah: "Touch down? Oh nevermind. Alright Cadet, I will be there in... 15 minutes. Se'Lai out"
Ailmna: "She seems a little dubious, but I'd be too in her position..."
Kayleigh:"Unfortunately being cryptic with her was the optimal approach. I am sure she will be less put-out by it all once we explain. And she wakes up"
Ailmna chuckles, "Yeah, that would help."
—
Arriving at the Academy, the three proceed to Keelah's office immediately, with Ailmna and Kayleigh still in their club wear and the Vulcan in the technician outfit
Kayleigh chimes the door on arrival
Keelah: "Come in"
Ailmna steps in, with the Vulcan entering last
Keelah looks the trio over, perking a brow at the less than discrete attire of the two cadets. She sips her raktajino, "Well ladies, flattering as it may be this is a little late for an impromptu invitation to a night out" she smiles a little, making light of things
Ailmna looks to Kayleigh, then down at herself, "Oh, right, we're still wearing those."
Kayleigh:"Apologies Professor, but that is not the reason for this meeting"
Keelah: "No, I imagine that has something to do with your less conspicious and much older friend behind you. Somewhat disappointing still, as I am sure there is a story behind that lovely dress"
Kayleigh perks a brow this time, uncertain how to respond
Ailmna: "That there is, but that's Kayleigh's story to tell," she grins at Kay
Kayleigh:"And there are more pressing stories to tell right now" she looks back to Ailmna, "You were the one who uncovered his activity, it will probably be best for you to explain what happened"
Ailmna nods, "We woke you in the middle of the night because we caught him," she indicates to the Vulcan behind them
Keelah: "Caught him, in what regard...?"
Ailmna: "He was following Cadet Kayleigh. I noticed him several times, so we chased him down. He gave an...interesting explanation for his actions."
Keelah takes a moment to study the Vulcan over a long sip of her drink, "So let me see if I understand this correctly; you were caught by these cadets whilst stalking one of these cadets?"
Vulcan: "My intention was not to stalk. I was...conflicted about whether I should make an approach, and how."
Keelah: "The intention does not define the action"
Ailmna: "That's not the most unusual part, either..."
Keelah: "Oh?"
Ailmna: "Turns out, he thought Cadet Kayleigh was Cadet T'Pia."
Kayleigh nods
Keelah frowns, "So not only were you stalking one of my cadets, but you did so in error thinking she was my daughter?"
Vulcan: "The mathematical odds of there being two half-Vulcan, half-human cadets in the same class were too low to have been of consideration."
Keelah: "Out of the mixup and the interest in my daughter, you make an illogical choice for which to explain first"
Vulcan: "That is because I suspect the latter of the two will be more difficult for you to accept. I assure you, I meant your daughter no harm. I was interested in potentially speaking with her because she...is my granddaughter."
Keelah frowns, looking between the three before her
Kayleigh nods again, a silent affirmation of the Vulcan's claim
Keelah: "So... you're my father?"
Vulcan: "I am."
Ailmna: "You think he could be telling the truth, Professor?"
Keelah: "I am... uncertain. Whilst my lack of information regarding the status of my father makes it technically possible... I find the probability of him suddenly appearing here at the Heart after so many years, and then choosing not to make his presence known but to instead stalk his granddaughter, and mistaking Cadet Kayleigh for her ih the process... well, incalculable doesn't quite seem to cut it"
Vulcan: "I had arrived before you returned, on board the Latenter. When I heard of your arrival, I intentionally kept away as I suspected making my presence known might cause unwanted disruptions. I have spent most of my time divided between the Temple and Network Control since."
Keelah looks the two cadets over again, "I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess you didn't find them at the Temple or Network Control this evening"
Ailmna: "Actually, the first time I spotted him was at the Temple. Didn't think much of him then, though. Then I saw him a second and third time."
Keelah: "I see. Well, I can certainly see now why you felt you had to contact me in the middle of the night"
Vulcan: "I saw Kayleigh by chance at the Temple. She was in her uniform, and I had thought she was T'Pia."
Kayleigh:"The problem is, Professor, we are unable to verify his identity. According to his story, his association with intelligence operations means he will not be listed on our databases"
Keelah hrms, "A valid concern, but I am afraid short of genetic testing I am in no better position to confirm his identity either"
Vulcan: "A genetic test is an option, though genetics can be altered. I would not blame you if you did not trust the results, knowing the capabilities of our enemies. It may be more ideal to consult one you trust."
Keelah: "You said you arrived on the Latenter, but they are conveniently away from here again now"
Kayleigh:"He did initially suggest the Admiral. But we did not want to risk attempting to contact her in case he turns out not to be who he claimed"
Keelah: "So you delivered a potential shapeshifter assassin to me instaed. Well, it's good to know how important you are to your students" she smiles, raising a hand to cut off the defensive objections before they are voiced, "Of course you did the right thing here, it would be far too risky to contact the Admiral directly in these circumstances"
Ailmna: "Maybe you could contact the Admiral, ask her about him without actually bringing him to her?"
Keelah: "I could. But I'm not going to. Not right now at least"
Ailmna: "Right, it is the middle of the night..."
Keelah: "And unless I am missing something, you don't exactly seem to have him restrained in any manner. Which means he has accompanied you all this time quite willingly"
Ailmna nods, "He's been cooperative, but he could be doing it to further his goal, whatever that is. I still think it might be a risk to just let him roam the Sphere freely."
Keelah: "Oh I completey agree Cadet. Howevere the fact that he is here willingly tells me there is less urgency to this resolution now. Whilst the situation you found yourselves in did require a more immediate resolution, we are past that now so I believe this can wait a few more hours before we consult the Admiral"
Ailmna: "Where should we keep him in the meantime, then?"
Keelah hrms, "The brig would appropriate, but if he is telling us the truth then it would also be unfair" she looks to him, "Would you take offense if I stationed a security escort outside of guest quarters?"
Vulcan: "I would not. It is a logical precaution."
Keelah: "Alright then" she taps at her console, "A security escort will be here shortly to show you to your quarters"
Ailmna: "Do you need us to watch him until they arrive?"
Keelah: "Your assistance has been invaluable, but I feel you've already been put out enough tonight by all of this. You girls can run along, don't worry, I will make sure to keep you informed how-
Kayleigh:- things transpire"
Ailmna nods, "Let us know if you need us again, Professor."
Keelah: "I will, thank you both"
Kayleigh nods and heads out
Ailmna also turns and heads out
Ailmna: "I think that was a pretty good result."
Kayleigh:"Yes, I find the Professor to be most capable of handling unexpected situations. Though I must confess her humour eludes me more often than not..."
Ailmna: "Really? Guess if her so-called father had her sense of humour, maybe he would've realized you weren't T'Pia earlier," she smirks
Kayleigh perks a brow, pausing as they walk down the corrider and looking to Ailmna, "How would his having a sense of humour alter his perception - or mis-percepction - of me?"
Ailmna: "If he made a joke and you didn't get it, I mean."
Ailmna chuckles, "That was a joke, too."
Kayleigh:"I see. Duly noted" she continues walking
Ailmna: "Do you believe his story?"
Kayleigh hrms, "I remain uncertain. I believe the most likely is that there is an element of truth, but there is more to his presence than he revealed to us"
Ailmna: "You seemed pretty willing to accept he was your grandfather for a bit there..."
Kayleigh:"I do not know if willing is the word I would use. But up to that point it was technically feasible. About as feasible as him being T'Pia's grandfather under the same obscure circumstances in fact"
Ailmna: "It /is/ an unusual story, but you make a good point that an infiltrator probably wouldn't use a story like that to trick us."
Kayleigh:"So whilst I have no cause to suspect this apart from a pattern of things that keep happening here at the Heart, I expect that we will learn he is indeed T'Pia's grandfather before then discovering the truth of his deception, possibly in his reason for being here and seeking her out"
Ailmna nods, "I guess we'll see. I'm sure the Professor'll figure things out."
—
The next day is a weekend day, and the dining hall is filled with many out of uniform cadets grabbing breakfast before starting their days doing whatever they have planned
Kayleigh arrives to find Mariel already there, sitting at their usual table and leaving Kay's seat open for her, of course
Kayleigh gets herself some breakfast and joins Mariel, "Good morning"
Mariel:"Morning Kay! Yesterday was your night out, right?"
Kayleigh:"One of them, yes"
Mariel takes a bite of her breakfast bun, "Hope you had fun!"
Kayleigh hrms, "It was certainly an interesting evening. I ran into Ailmna at the promenade when I was buying a new outfit, and then again at Queens at night"
Mariel:"Really? You sure she's not following you or something?"
Kayleigh:"I am sure. But it turns out that someone else was"
Mariel:"Wait, someone was /actually/ following you?"
Kayleigh nods, sipping her tea, "Yes, apparently he is T'Pia's grandfather. And a spy - or ex-spy - it is unclear"
Mariel narrows her eyes, "Is this a setup for a joke? Are you trying out some weird style of humour?"
Kayleigh shakes her head, "No, I got enough of that from Professor Se'Lai last night. Or this morning, if you want to be technical" she continues to nonchalantly eat her breakfast
Mariel:"If it's not a joke...why was T'Pia's grandfather following you?"
Kayleigh:"Because he thought I was T'Pia apparently"
Mariel:"He...doesn't recognize his own granddaughter?"
Kayleigh:"They have never met. Even Professor Se'Lai was unable to confirm his identity"
Mariel:"Is he T'Pia's grandfather on her mother's side, or her father's?"
Kayleigh:"Her mother's"
Mariel:"That means he's Professor Se'Lai's father. And she can't confirm his identity?"
Kayleigh:"Correct. I do not know the specific circumstances, but apparently he has not been a part of his daughters life for, well, long enough for her to not recognize him at least. Assuming the man we met is in fact who he claims to be"
Mariel nods, "It does seem very weird for him to randomly be here, where the Professor and T'Pia are."
Kayleigh:"Yes. He claims he came back with that dark looking intelligence ship the Latenter and has been working at the Heart for some months without contacting his daughter or granddaughter"
Mariel:"Why would he suddenly decide to follow her...or you, now?"
Kayleigh:"Apparently he saw us by happenchance at the temple yesterday. He assumed I was T'Pia and proceeded to follow me around while figuring out how to approach his granddaughter"
Mariel:"At the temple? What was he doing there?"
Kayleigh:"I am uncertain, but he said that is where he has been spending a lot of his time since being here. There and Central Control at least. Do you recall seeing an older Vulcan male around there at all?"
Mariel:"I've seen a couple of them. There's a very old Vulcan, probably closer to Professor Lycas' age. There's one that's younger than him but older than Professor Se'Lai. I'm pretty sure he's a Starfleet officer. I don't think he's old enough to be her father though, but I'm not an expert on Vulcan ages. There's another I've talked with, he's a diplomat and definitely not the Professor's father."
Kayleigh:"I suppose it could be the Starfleet Officer, he did say he is - or was - one. And it is not uncommon for our age to be misread through physical appearance by shorter lived species"
Mariel:"What did he look like?"
Kayleigh hrms, "Nothing extraordinary about his overall build. Typically dark hair, like the Professors. He did have a short beard and was a little on the scruffy side"
Mariel also hrms, "That doesn't sound like the officer. He's always been clean shaven and his hair is a bit darker than the Professor's and more like mine. But maybe..."
Kayleigh:"A thought?"
Mariel:"I've seen someone with a bit of a beard, scruffy hair, the same colour as the Professor's. Similar skin tone, too. I thought he was Romulan though, not Vulcan. But like we were saying in the temple, you're similar enough. Especially the ones without the pronounced head ridges."
Kayleigh:"Curious. What gave you the impression that this one was Romulan specifically?"
Mariel:"I don't know, something about how he carried himself."
Kayleigh:"Skulking around in the shadows like he's up to no good?"
Mariel:"Yeah, that!"
Kayleigh:"That could well be the same person then"
Mariel:"I believe he's not skulking around the temple because he's up to no good, though. I've also seen him openly talking with Chlasi and going into training rooms. He just carries himself that way -
Mariel:- probably because he's used to it. Which is why he looked very Romulan to me."
Kayleigh:"That would fit the profile of a seasoned intelligence officer"
Mariel:"Never thought the Professor's father would be a spy..."
Kayleigh:"This is stsill assuming the the man in question is indeed her father"
Mariel:"We could head to the temple, ask around, see if anyone knows more about him."
Kayleigh hrms, "It could help the Professor in verifying his identity"
Mariel finishes her food, "I'll get changed into my robes, then! Meet you at the Ferry landing pad?"
Kayleigh:"Very well, I will await you there then"
Mariel smiles and stands, heading off back to her dorm
—
Elsewhere on the Heart, Enelya is working away in her office
Her PA comes through on the intercom, "Admiral, apologies for the interruption. But I have Captain Se'Lai requesting to speak with you on a secure channel"
Enelya: "Put her through."
Keelah appears on her screen a moment later, "Good morning Admiral. I hope I'm not disrupting anything of consequence"
Enelya: "Just some regular paperwork. How can I help you, Captain?"
Keelah:"A couple of my cadets had a curious encounter last night. They brought a man to me in the early hours of this morning who claimed to be my father. And that he had been in the heart since the Latenter arrived, but working on a classified assignment so not registered on any of our databases. He suggested that you were among the few who might corroborate his story"
Enelya: "He decided to approach you?"
Keelah:"No actually. He was caught following one of the cadets. He claims that he saw her in the temple and mistook her for T'Pia. He then proceeded to follow her whilst determining a means of approach. Does this make any sense to you at all Admiral?"
Enelya: "This man...a bit of a beard, messy hair?"
Keelah:"I take that as a yes" she sighs, "So it is true?"
Enelya nods, "You should come by my office. I'll...explain things to you with a little more detail, Captain."
Keelah:"Very well Admiral, do you have time this morning? Only I currently have Su- my... father... in custody. I would prefer to bring this to a resolution sooner rather than later, but I understand if your schedule negates that possibility"
Enelya: "I have a meeting in a few minutes, but I'll be free for a while after. Does 1100 hours work for you?"
Keelah nods, "That can work. I will see you then Admiral"
Enelya: "See you then."
—
Mariel and Kayleigh arrive at the Chlasi Temple again, with Mariel dressed in her robes. This time, she approaches one of the attendants
Attendant: "Hello. How may I help you, Apprentice?"
Mariel:"We're looking for information on someone. We think he might be another apprentice here."
Attendant: "Do you have a name for this apprentice?"
Mariel:"No, but we have a description..." She looks to Kayleigh
Kayleigh steps forward, "This is male Vulcan, middle-aged. Approximately your height, with dark brown hair and a short beard. Also a little scruffy looking"
Attendant: "I believe I've seen someone of that description on several occasions, but I am not familiar with him. Perhaps you should inquire with the Lorekeepers in the library."
Kayleigh:"The Lorekeepers?" she looks between the two, "I take it these are not Klingon poets..."
Mariel chuckles, "No, it's the Chlasi term for the librarians here."
Mariel nods to the Attendant, "Good suggestion. We'll give the library a visit."
Kayleigh:"I was not aware the temple contained a library. Is it a resource specific to those attempting to master psionics, or a more general purpose library?" she asks Mari as they continue
Mariel:"Mostly resources for psionics, but the temple's records are also kept there too. And there's some general information too on the Esoterics and Chlasi culture and history."
Mariel:"But most of the general information's available in databases throughout the Trinity Province."
Kayleigh:"I see. The next I accompany you here for one of your sessions I shall have to spend some time there"
Mariel nods, "There's quite a bit of information on the Chlasi in there you might be interested in!"
Mariel steps into a lift and selects their destination
Kayleigh:"To be honest, Our conversation the other day with Ailmna made me curious about latent psionics so I thought I might research those some more"
Mariel:"Trying to find out if you might be psionic?"
Kayleigh:"Vulcans are naturally psionic, and it is a side of myself I have yet to explore as we discussed. But if there is potential for unexpected late development of additional abilities then I believe I should prepare myself to handle such an eventuality"
Mariel nods, "I guess that's logical. Well, if it's psionic information you're after, the temple library is the best place for it! Definitely as far as the Heart is concerned, maybe even the whole galaxy..."
Kayleigh:"A distinct possibility"
The lift doors open to...
Mariel steps out of the lift, "And here we are."
Kayleigh looks around, "A very impressive installation. Have you been here before?"
Mariel nods, "A couple of times. I'm mostly in the practice rooms with an experienced Esoteric to guide me, alone or in group exercises. But sometimes someone takes me down here to show me something, or ask me to do a bit of research on my own. Oh, it works much like Federation libraries too, as you can see from the people studying. Once I came to the Temple but our teacher had an urgent situation to deal with, so I sat in the library and did some of our Academy reading which I had on me."
Kayleigh:"Well then, do you see a lorekeeper or other familiar face we can enquire with?"
Mariel looks around, "I think I see someone I recognize." She leads the way across the library
Mariel approaches one of the golden-skinned Chlasi, "Lorekeeper Angolinn?"
Angolinn turns to them with a smile. She appears to be a middle-aged Chlasi, leaning towards old, with wrinkles starting to be visible on her face. Like all the other Chlasi, she carries -
Mariel - herself gracefully
Angolinn: "Apprentice. Is there something I can do for you?"
Mariel:"We're looking for a specific apprentice. We don't have a name, just a description, and I thought you might be able to help us learn more about him."
Angolinn nods, "And what is your interest in this apprentice? Have you been tasked with passing a message on to them?"
Kayleigh:"It recently came to our attention that he may be a lost relative of one of our classmates. It is our duty to learn if this is so"
Angolinn: "Interesting. And what does he look like?"
Kayleigh:"He is Vulcan, middle-aged. He has dark hair and a short beard. Also a little scruffy looking"
Angolinn leads them to a console, where she begins tapping, "Vulcan, middle aged..." A number of images appear on the screen of various Vulcan males
Several of the images disappear as they are eliminated by the search categories. Among the remaining ones, Kayleigh spots the face of the Vulcan she encountered...
Kayleigh points him out, "That is the one"
Angolinn selects the profile, "He is an apprentice here, but there does not seem to be much information on who he is. Besides a name, all it gives is his weight and height, and that he is a male Vulcan, of course."
Kayleigh:"Is that unusual for an apprentice then?"
Angolinn: "It is not entirely unheard of. Usually, we have more information, but there are a few apprentices who were liberated from the Horde or for some other reason had very limited -
Mariel - information to provide, due to having lost all knowledge of their people to the Horde, or not knowing their exact birth date due to never having known their family."
Kayleigh hrms, "He seemed to know quite well who he was. That was the very premise of how we met in fact"
Angolinn: "Is he a citizen of your Federation? Usually, apprentices who have a file with an established government simply pass their information to us, and we record it here."
Mariel nods, "I remember doing that when I came here."
Kayleigh:"I am not entirely certain if he is a citizen of any government"
Angolinn: "That could explain it. We don't ask the apprentices to provide much information directly, usually we simply ask for a file. If he did not have a file, the Attendant may have simply recorded the bare necessities and left it at that."
Kayleigh:"Well at least we know his claim to have been spending time here was true. You said he was an apprentice? I don't suppose it is fitting for you to divulge the details of an apprentices learning to outsiders though is it"
Angolinn smiles, "Mariel here is not an outsider. But you are right, we are not supposed to divulge the details of their training. However, I can tell you that Narthon is his primary mentor. He may know more about this apprentice's identity through their time together."
Kayleigh:"Thank you" she looks to Mariel, "Do you know this Narthon?"
Mariel:"Not personally, but I've heard the name. We can go ask him more." She looks back to Angolinn, "You said you have a name for the Vulcan?"
Angolinn: "We do, and that we are free to divulge."
Kayleigh 's eyes widen slightly as she realized she never even got a name from him
Mariel:"And what's the name you have on record?"
Angolinn: "Sulvaan."
—
Enelya sips a cup of tea in her office while scrolling through a PADD
The door chimes
Enelya: "Come in."
Keelah:"Admiral"
Enelya: "Captain. I apologize for not telling you about him earlier, but he expressed that he didn't want to trouble you. You had just returned with heavy damage to the Valley Forge then, and the argument he made for not putting any more on your plate was...logical."
Keelah takes a seat, "Yes, I can appreciate how such a significant personal factor could influence the weighty decision I was facing then"
Enelya: "I thought he would come to me before trying to approach you. When the weeks passed by, I had figured he couldn't work up the courage for it. I didn't want to rush him, and let him do it on his own time. Why he suddenly decided to act now, I have no idea. He's...a little like you when it comes to emotion, I think."
Keelah perks a brow, "I did not get that impression from him. Curious"
Enelya: "Not entirely like you. He didn't embrace emotion by choice, but I think his time in exile...had a heavy impact on him. He tries to maintain control most of the time, and most of the time he's fairly successful, but sometimes they come through and affect him."
Keelah:"Presumably that is what happened yesterday then when he thought he saw T'Pia at the temple"
Enelya nods, "And ended up setting off the chain of events which resulted in him meeting you before he was ready."
Keelah:"It would seem so. Based on your interactions with the man, is there anything more you can tell me about him?"
Enelya: "He helped Captain Leveson-Scott protect your mother on Vulcan, and they both seemed to trust him well enough. Apparently he was one of the few people who discovered the presence of the infiltrators long before anyone else, and suffered for it. They framed him and practically erased him from existence, as far as our databanks are concerned. Without a personnel file, your best way of learning more about him is asking him about it."
Keelah:"I shall do so. It seems I will also need to have a conversation with my mother on this matter as well"
Enelya: "I'm...afraid she's unreachable for the moment. She's on a classified site, working against the infiltrators from another angle. That's probably why Sulvaan suggested me as the best person to vouch for him. I'll let you know as soon as you can contact your mother."
Keelah:"I see, well then yes I would appreciate that Admiral. I suppose I can't put this off any longer then, thank you for your time and guidance" she stands
Enelya smiles, "I'm glad you understand why I didn't want to tell you this right away. Good luck, Captain."
Keelah:"Thank you" she smiles, turning to head out
—
The pair make their way through the temple to Narthon's office, chiming the doorbell as they arrive. A Chlasi voice bids them to enter
Kayleigh follows Mari inside
Narthon is another golden-skinned Chlasi, seated behind his desk wearing a dark grey, nearly black robe with blue trimming
Mariel widens her eyes, "You're a Militant Esoteric."
Narthon: "And you are not one of my usual apprentices. Tell me, what brings you here?"
Mariel:"We're here about one of your apprentices, a Vulcan by the name of Sulvaan?"
Kayleigh:"We were hoping to learn more about him"
Narthon: "And why is that?"
Kayleigh:"I recently came into contact with him and learned that he may be a lost relative of one of my fellow cadets. I am trying to find out if his claim is true or not, since she has been targeted before by infiltrators"
Narthon: "Ahh. And Sulvaan is quite the enigma. Fortunately for you, I have touched his mind during our training sessions. I will not speak of anything of a personal nature, but I can affirm -
Mariel - that these very infiltrators you speak of were in fact the ones who took his past life from him and forced him into hiding all these years ago."
Kayleigh:"I see, that does align with what he claimed. It would seem our concern may have been misplaced after all then as he seems to genuine"
Narthon: "You have nothing to fear from him. I do not believe he will harm you or your friend, intentionally or unintentionally."
Kayleigh:"Thank you for your input"
Mariel nods, "And taking the time to answer our questions. We won't ask you to share any more on your student than is necessary."
Narthon: "If you wish to learn more about him, you may ask him in person. He is not a threat."
Mariel turns to head out
Mariel muses as they exit the office, "So he does seem to be telling the truth. But he's being trained by a Militant Esoteric..."
Kayleigh:"You seemed surprised by that earlier. What is the significance of the Militant Esoterics?”
Mariel:"They're just rarer to see around the temple. Militant Esoterics are Esoterics who have talents with martial applications and use them to support the Trinity's defense efforts. They're usually on ship crews. The ones that train apprentices specialize in taking on students with...similarly dangerous abilities."
Kayleigh:"And this Sulvaan is an apprentice of this field. So that must mean he has some unlocked ability that he has been honing for combat then. But why would a Vulcan do such a thing...?"
Mariel:"Maybe the ability is inherently dangerous. Or he's up to something, but Narthon says he's not a threat, and I can't think of any reason he would be lying to us. Militant Esoterics might serve in a -
Mariel:- combat role, but they hold to the same ideals as the rest of the Order. They use their abilities in defense of the Trinity Alliance and its people, not to harm people for the sake of it..."
Kayleigh:"I hope you are right. It would probably have helped if he had not withheld details of having any abilities. We may have thought twice about leaving him alone with the Professor in that case"
Mariel:"We should head back to the Annex and check on them. I think we've learned all we can here, anyways."
Kayleigh:"Agreed. The Professor said she would keep us informed, so perhaps she has been in touch with Ailmna"
—
Alien Keelah makes her way to the guest quarters Sulvaan is confined within, where two security enlisted stand guard
Keelah dismisses the guards and goes to chime the door, but hesitates. She finds herself pacing back and forth outside the door simply debating how to approach this and even if to chime or just go in reaching for the chime, then pulling back - before a random officer walking down the hall inadvertently prompts her to chime the door
Sulvaan: "Enter."
Keelah steps inside, "I trust you have been sufficiently comfortable here"
Sulvaan has changed out of the technician's jumpsuit and appears to have replicated some simple clothes for himself, which he is dressed in. He looks up as Keelah enters, "Certainly more comfortable than a brig. Have you spoken with the Admiral yet?"
