OUTCOME: Negative result confirmed on Gainsborough survivors. First contact established with Eagek.

NARRATIVE: Let me start by stating that this is something new for me, but Captain Se'Lai insisted that I write this narrative of events for her official report as one of the only people on the away mission to have witnessed almost every element without fear of compromise. She also suggested that it would be good practice in line with my studies, and I can see no fault in her logic with either statement.

At beta +1 today, the Valley Forge disembarked DS13 with an accompanying task force of several vessels, to pursue a fresh lead in their ongoing SAR mission. This lead came from one of the long range probes sent out from the site of the Gainsborough's demise and the probe had indicated the presence of advanced technology on the planet we were heading to.

Upon arrival in the system, we commenced a standard approach and initial survey and were promptly contacted via subspace from the planet. The alien which appeared on screen seemed to be of avian heritage and came across highly cordial and welcoming. Our task force was promptly invited to visit upon the planet's surface while our ships conducted detailed search scans from orbit.

The planet itself seemed highly developed and somewhat utopian. Our away team was met in person by the being we conversed with from orbit who introduced herself as Prut'uth. She seemed to maintain the welcoming approach and eagerly showed us around their city. During this tour several mentions were made to the Eagek's religion which they seemed to take very seriously for such an advanced race. Picking up on this fact, the senior officers present inquired further into this and we were subsequently led to a temple. Inside we found shrines to multiple deities, and a priest who offered to guide us in conversing with them. While the senior staff debated among themselves, I took the opportunity to speak with the priest directly and inquire about their deities helping with my amnesia - at the suggestion of a fellow member of the away team. While I pursued this, Captain Vallen also explored more freely.

The priest led me to the shrine depicting 'Wruot'nt' - their god of knowledge and memory - where I said my request as instructed, but was not spoken to. Meanwhile, Captain Vallen's exploration had led her to a shirne that the priest informed me belonged to 'Treannhn' - the god of living energies - where she apparently was heard and subsequently blessed. This came in the form of an unknown energy which washed over the captain and left her in what can be best described as a highly euphoric state. Tricorder scans did register a significant increase to her serotonin levels.

It was at this point however that things took an unexpected turn as a fierce storm came from nowhere and began to batter the city. The priest determined that our presence had somehow angered one their gods and he urged us to leave his temple. The situation flared and Commander Drax was incapacitated by the storm - I think it affected his sensory capacity somehow, I only know that he was struggling with it and so tried to aid him the best I could. I am uncertain how still, but the confusion led to LTJG opening fire on the priest with her phaser. It is not for me to comment directly as I lack certainty to the facts, but the ensuing confusion led me to believe that no order was given to fire, and this escalated the confusion further - with two senior officers essentially incapacitated.

The priest did however still force us from his temple as he seemed to wield a form of energy power from the staff he carried. It served as a defensive barrier from the phaser blast, but also when conducted in the appropriate manner, it projected a wave of energy which propelled us all away from him, and so we were subsequently forced to leave the shelter of his temple and face the increasingly violent storm. As we braced against the elements outside the temple, a voice rang out through the thunder stating that we had intruded. With the storm growing stronger by the minute, the decision was made to use Commander Drax' Runabout to leave the surface, since communication with the ships in orbit had been lost.

As we moved, the source of the storm became apparent in the form of a large and ominous portal in the sky above the city. It appeared mechanical in nature and emitted unusual energy readings. As the storm continued to rage, the city took considerable damage from a combination of high winds, tidal forces and electrical discharges. When we reached the Runabout we found that it had already been pushed dangerously close to falling off it's landing platform and into the ocean.

Furthermore; we found that Captain Vallen had fallen behind and so Captain Fulagsu, Commander S'Vesta and Lieutenant Wilson doubled back to find her. The remainder of our team attempted to restore the shuttle to safety and saw moderate success. Though when we attempted to launch, we were prevented by an unseen force. This eventually presented itself as... a giant hand, and it forced the runabout to the ground thus disabling it's engines in the process. Several members of the away team were injured as this occurred and priority was given to treating the wounded.

As the remainder of the away team caught up to our position, the storm cleared and a being appeared before the Runabout identifying itself as Treannhn. It expressed sympathy at seeing our injuries and promptly healed all collected injuries with a single gesture. The being left again before anyone could establish a dialogue with it however. The following calm was short lived as Captain Fulagsu caught up to our position and claimed to have made direct contact with another of these 'gods'.

The creature we were presented with did not appear as an Eagek like Treannhn; but rather as an abscure amalgamation of numerous Federation species. This did not present in the form of half breed races, but rather an unbalanced mix of physical traits including a single vulcanoid ear and a single andorian antenna. It also wore a highly colourful imitation of a Starfleet uniform. When asked to identify itself, the creature simply responded by stating 'I'm MAD', and offering everyone cheesecake. Retrospectively, I do not believe it's name was literally MAD, but it seemed to accept this identification and so it was continued throughout the ensuing dialogue.

By this point, many on the away team were all too eager to find a way off the planet and - once 'MAD' seemed to permit communication with the ships in orbit - the order was given and the away team evacuated. //Edit: K. Se'Lai - For the record, the Valley Forge did not act at this time, but the USS Freeman instigated the evacuation at her CO's discretion. Whilst the away team were presented with the illusion of being out of contact, all ships maintained constant transporter locks and had nothing on sensors to suggest anything out of the ordinary on the ground.// However, MAD did not see fit to release either myself of Captain Vallen with the others and our transport signal was blocked.

Our prolonged stay with MAD afforded us the opportunity for a more direct dialogue however and - with Captain Vallen still less than optimal from her prior experience (which was confirmed as being removed when the Traennhn being healed everyone's injuries) - I attempted to build on the information we had gleamed to this point and learn more about the creatures.

Though I feel in no position to apply a certain assessment; I present my personal interpretation of their situation as I understood it; The god creatures seem to hail from a different plane of existence and are limited in their interaction with our universe by a single entry point - the portal which opens to Eagek. They seem to regard the planet as a personal playground and have for an immeasurable time wrought havoc upon the indigenous species for their own amusement. It would seem that each of these creatures gains enjoyment from different means; while one enjoyed confusion and madness, another took delight in smashing the Eagek cities into ruins, while another took pleasure in providing aid and helping the people. I believe this is how they came to be perceived as gods of different aspects.

Our dialogue opened opportunities to reason with the creatures and present convincing arguments that their methods were flawed. This seemed to pique the interest of the creatures and while they held to no promises of rapid action, even the one responsible for raining destruction upon the planet seemed eager to explore our suggestion that they would find a more fulfilling existence through taking mortal forms.

//Edit: K. Se'Lai - After the last of the away teams were recovered, I convened with the other CO's present on board the Freeman where a debate ensued regarding how best to proceed. This was soon settled with my affirmation that all personnel exposed to contact with the god creatures either directly or indirectly would be subjected to a full medical before resuming duty, per standard protocol in such situations. The Valley Forge remained in orbit with the task force to support this with our more advanced medical facilities and once all personnel were cleared, we parted from the task force to resume the SAR//
