Sierra Reyes began her Starfleet career as a communications officer on board the USS Meridian. After successfully defending the Meridian from two cyberattacks and intercepting and decoding a Klingon transmission which gave Starfleet a distinct edge in a confrontation, she was approached by Starfleet Intelligence but turned down their officer. Instead, Sierra chose to remain on the Meridian, transferring over to the Security department as a cybersecurity specialist.

Following the decommissioning of the Meridian when its Gamma section was destroyed in a MVAM maneuver, Sierra was transferred to the USS Tokubei. She continued her career in Security, working her way up to Assistant Chief on the Tokubei before she was transferred again at the personal request of Vice Admiral Rexx to serve as his cybersecurity expert in the newly discovered Solanae Dyson Sphere. Sierra became the Security Chief of the admiral's flagship, the USS Cheron, after her previous Chief was severely injured during the defense of Sol from the Undine. She served in this role throughout the Iconian War.

Sierra was promoted to Commander at the end of the war and transferred to the Command department, serving as Executive Officer of the USS Justicar under Captain Pierre Renaud. During her time as XO, Sierra faciliated a tumultous first contact with the Matikan civilization, earning her a Prentares Ribbon of Commendation.

In 2419 during a mission to investigate Undine activity in the Alini Sector, Sierra led a mutiny against Captain Renaud, seizing command of the Justicar. The mutineers deposited the loyal crewmembers, as well as those among the crew who did not participate in the mutiny but did not wish to remain on the ship, on the uninhabited world of Omicron Zeta IV and subsequently disappeared. Sporadic sightings of the rogue Justicar under the command of Sierra Reyes have been reported across Romulan space, supposedly acting in a vigilante capacity.
