Stardate 76331.8 | Construction of Cerberus-class U.S.S. Omaha is completed. Despite growing concern over vulnerabilities presented by the multi-vector assault system, the Omaha was too far along to have the system removed and as a result the ship was launched with the system functional. Omaha was assigned to the Romulan border as a patrol craft and convoy escort.
Stardate 82838.5 | Omaha's investigation into an anomalous deep-space signal uncovers a Romulan D'deridex Battlecruiser on the Federation side of the Neutral Zone. Captain Ottosen attempts to negotiate with the Romulans who identify themselves as having the backing of the Tal Shiar. However, the Romulan Empire refuses to assist and disavows the ship as followers of the former Praetor Taris, forcing the crew of the D'deridex to go rogue and attack the Omaha. Knowing that the U.S.S. Prometheus had managed to destroy a D'deridex by making use of its multi-vector assault mode, Captain Ottosen ordered the separation procedure. However, due to lackluster maintenance of the neglected system, the multi-vector assault mode failed to engage and the ship suffered internal damage attempting to do so. The Omaha was promptly disabled by the Romulan ship, suffering massive casualties in the attack. The D'deridex decided not to destroy the Starfleet vessel and cloaked, fleeing back to Romulan space. As a result of the incident both Captain Ottosen and Chief Engineer Lieutenant Commander R'Nular were investigated. While Captain Ottosen was acquitted, he resigned his post as commanding officer of the Omaha. Lieutenant Commander R'Nular was court-martialed, found guilty of neglect of duty causing loss of life and subsequently given a dishonourable discharge from Starfleet. The Omaha is dry docked for major repairs and refit.
Stardate 83000 | During its time in dry dock, the Omaha was considered for decommissioning, but due to the modular nature of the Cerberus-class designs, repairs were not as difficult as initial estimates. Engineers discovered that the attempt to force the broken separation mechanism to separate worsened the situation and caused the different parts of the vessel to be fused together, destroying many systems. To repair the damage, the entirety of the Omaha's nacelles and much of her engineering section was replaced with components designed for Prometheus models, though the nacelle configuration was set in a unique manner to work around the pre-existing systems. The refits scrapped the multi-vector assault mode, and though the Omaha can still separate into two segments for emergencies, the additional phaser banks normally hidden during the docked mode were completely removed as the ship was meant to function without separating.
Stardate 86504.5 | The Federation's alliance with the newly formed Romulan Republic leads to a proposal about a joint project to equip a Starfleet vessel with a Romulan cloaking system to better deal with the increasing hostilities with the Romulan Star Empire. Initial evaluations found that a ship not designed for a modern cloak would require quite a bit of auxiliary power in order to field such a device. The Omaha, having its multi-vector assault mode (and all systems related to it such as the additional weaponry) removed, had the spare power capacity and was quickly chosen as the optimal candidate for this project
Stardate 87116.5 | U.S.S. Omaha is released from dry dock under the command of Captain Yuri Alexei Volkov, with five RRF exchange officers on board to maintain the cloaking device and monitor its proper usage. The Omaha is reassigned to the Romulan border where it becomes a vital asset with its stealth capabilities. Later this year, the Omaha partakes in the defense of Vulcan and her crew are responsible for apprehending a key Tal Shiar operative on Nimbus III.
Stardate 91333.1 | The Omaha assists in evacuating New Romulus during the initial Iconian assault and works with Romulan and Klingon forces in stealth operations throughout the conflict.
