*Valentines special* The ever promiscuous Cadet Miklos decides that when a training survey presents an ideal chance to get closer to Cadet Kayleigh, it is an opportunity too good to resist. But even a half Vulcan is still a tough nut to crack, and what will his Orion girlfriend have to say about it...? The shy and reclusive Cadet Kerafar will see all, and have to face his own challenges too.

Kayleigh@crystyl | Back at the Heart Annex, we find the cadets not in the usual Iconain surroundings. But rather on a very nondescript Starfleet bridge. All of the stations being manned by the cadets makes it clear- Kayleigh@crystyl - that it's a simulation which currently seems to have them travelling at sublight speeds through a star system NPC@annpc#557 | Cadet Kerafar sits in the command chair, shifting a little and clearly looking not at home in the seat as he takes in the view on the screen Kayleigh@crystyl CDT Iona has the science station, "Captain, we are entering the search area now" NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar glances over, "Anything on sensors?" Kayleigh@crystyl | CDT Iona: "Nothing yet" Kayleigh@crystyl | CDT Kostenko speaks up from the helm, "Sooo... should we start a search pattern or something?" Kayleigh@crystyl is at tactical, "Given how long it was since the ship disappeared, it is unlikely to be still be active. A search pattern would be logical" NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar: "Right, yes. Do a search pattern, uhh...do they have names like evasive patterns? Just, cover the area, make sure we do a clean sweep." Kayleigh@crystyl | CDT Iona eyerolls and taps at her console, "I can plot a grid to cover the region based on our effective sensor range" NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar nods, "Good, perfect. Let's do that." Kayleigh@crystyl | The simulation runs for some time with the team conducting a fruitless search NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar stands, clearly getting a little impatient, "Still nothing?" Kayleigh@crystyl speaks up, "Captain, I am detecting anomalous readings from the 3rd moon of the 2nd planet. We are just coming into range now, but it is unclear what the readings are just yet. It is however - Kayleigh@crystyl:- possible that they could be traces of an antimatter explosion" NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar: "Not good. Take us in. Carefully." Kayleigh@crystyl CDT Kostenko nods, "Altering course" Kayleigh@crystyl | The ship moves in. Carefully NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar: "Iona, let me know if there's anything on sensors that could be what we're looking for. Or, you know...danger." Kayleigh@crystyl | CDT Iona: "Yes Captain" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Whatever happened to the Halifax happened at least 3 months ago. If it was attacked, the odds of an attacker still being in the region are negligible" NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar: "Doesn't hurt to be cautious. But probably no need to raise alert condition...right?" He glances to Kayleigh Kayleigh@crystyl shakes her head, "There is no justification at this time" Kayleigh@crystyl | CDT Kostenko: "We are approaching the moon now" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Still nothing clear on those readings" NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar: "No sign of wreckage or anything in the area either, I take it?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Nothing that would account for a starship. Anything on that scale this close to the moon would likely have fallen into it's gravity by now" Kayleigh@crystyl | CDT Iona: "Wait, I think I see something over the polar region. But... I can't tell if it's a ship or not for some reason" NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar: "Depending on the velocity it fell, it could be too damaged to be recognizable as a ship. Let's get a closer scan. Helm, we're...not in orbit yet, are we?" Kayleigh@crystyl | CDT Kostenko: "Not yet, no" NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar: "Put us in orbit over the polar region and start scanning then...whatever that is there for material composition. See if it could be pieces from a ship or something." Kayleigh@crystyl | CDT Kostenko: "Making for a geosynchronous orbit" Kayleigh@crystyl | The ship closes in, the moon growing more prominent on the viewscreen NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar finally decides to take a seat again, looking on as they approach the moon and do their scanning NPC@annpc#557 | The Bolian cadet idly taps his fingers on the armrest as he waits Kayleigh@crystyl | As they draw in towards the polar orbit, Iona speaks up again, "These readings are certainly unusual, it's not so much that they are anomalous in nature. But more like they aren't there..?" Kayleigh@crystyl perks a brow NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar looks over, "What'd you mean, they aren't there...?" Kayleigh@crystyl | CDT Iona looks over, uncertain, "I... don't know. The readings just don't quite seem to register, but when they do they almost look like a ship" NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar: "Well that's definitely not normal." He stands, walking over to see these strange readings for himself Kayleigh@crystyl:l| Karafar is no more able to make sense of the readings, only confirm Iona's experience NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar: "That's very strange. The sensors are definitely calibrated properly?" Kayleigh@crystyl | CDT Iona: "I will run a diagnostic" NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar looks around, "Anyone else have any idea what we might be looking at here?" Kayleigh@crystyl | The bridge is full of equally dumbfounded silent looks Kayleigh@crystyl taps her console, "We may not have to dwell on the question, I have a new contact at the same coordinates. It is a ship" NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar looks over to Kayleigh, "Is it the Halifax? Or...can you tell?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"I am registering a Starfleet IFF" she taps, perking a brow again, "It does seem to be the Halifax" she taps, focusing the viewscreen and sure enough a humble little Miranda class appears bearing - Kayleigh@crystyl:- the name Halifax across it's saucer NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar looks to the viewscreen, making his way back to the command chair, "What state is it in? Power, systems, how's it looking from here?" Kayleigh@crystyl | CDT Shavinnia is on Ops: "There is some sign of damage, but overall systems appear to be intact and functional" Kayleigh@crystyl | CDT Iona: "I am reading a number of lifesigns aboard" Kayleigh@crystyl:"They are breaking orbit and coming our way" NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar: "I...guess we should hail them. Shavi?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"They are breaking orbit and coming our way" Kayleigh@crystyl | Shavi nods and taps. then taps some more... then some more, and frowns, "I am getting no response from them" Kayleigh@crystyl | CDT Gibson is on engineering: "From the damage to the outer hull... it is possible that their comm systems are offline" NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar: "That makes sense. But still, they've been missing for three months, and they don't look completely immobile. Why haven't they made any attempt to contact Starfleet...?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"If they sustained heavy damage, it is likely that they had to land on the surface to effect repairs. Such work in these conditions could easily account for that much time and then some" Kayleigh@crystyl | CDT Gibson ahems, "Maybe not a bad shout to get some repair crews mobilized..." NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar nods, "Yes, of course. Let's get our people ready to lend them a hand." Kayleigh@crystyl | CDT Iona: "Should we get medical standing by as well?" NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar: "Best to have them ready too, I think. Can you tell from the lifesigns if any of them might need medical help?" Kayleigh@crystyl | CDT Iona shakes her head, "Unfortunately not" Kayleigh@crystyl meanwhile stares up at the viewscreen and the Miranda crawling towards them with a slight frown, "They are still closing... this is not right" NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar: "Are their sensors down too? No wait that can't be, they have to have seen us to be coming towards us..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Yes, but protocol should be to hold position once in range of one another. I think we need to go to red alert Captain" Kayleigh@crystyl | Gibson looks over and scoffs, "Against one of our own? Where's the 'logic' in that?" he laughs Kayleigh@crystyl | A few others chuckle slightly too Kayleigh@crystyl | Shiva: "Yeah, think about it. If we suddenly arm ourselves they'll probably think we're hostile!" NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar: "Red alert might be a little too extreme. Maybe they're having an impulse engine malfunction, with the damage and all? Just...be ready to move us out of the way if they keep coming, - NPC@annpc#557 - Kostenko. No, wait, of course, we have tractor beams. We can hold them if there's any risk of crashing." Kayleigh@crystyl | Gibson nods, "Now that's a sensible pla-" Kayleigh@crystyl | They are suddenly shaken from their feet as the Halifax opens fire with the best barrage it can muster at the unshielded Cadet ship. Phasers pierce through it's saucer several times while a pair - Kayleigh@crystyl:- of torpedoes strike the nacelle strut and the nacelle itself, setting off a chain reaction which promptly ends in a white flash before the - now utterly chaotic and destroyed bridge - is frozen as- Kayleigh@crystyl:- the program ends NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar simply stares shocked at the viewscreen for a moment before blinking and looking around the bridge, "How were we supposed to react to that? That came without any warning..." Kayleigh@crystyl | Prof. Matthews - Command - enters through the arch with some slightly sarcastic applauding at the cadets still recovering their footing, "Congratulations kids, you're all dead" Kayleigh@crystyl straightens her uniform as she stands again, taking in the surroundings NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar quickly stands at attention as the professor enters Kayleigh@crystyl | Matthews looks to Karafar, then the rest of the room, "Don't beat yourselves up alright. But before you ask, no; this is not a 'no win scenario'. Any guesses as to what you did wrong?" Kayleigh@crystyl | More blank faces NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar looks to Kayleigh, "You saw something wrong with that ship, Kay, right?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"The standard posture for starships entering a new formation is hold position at the 50k marker - within transporter range of one another, but nothing more" Kayleigh@crystyl | Gibson frowns, "So you saying that her idea to go to red alert was the right call?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Matthews shakes his head, "Whilst in this instance it would have been beneficial with hindsight, the caution of appearing too aggressive is valid - be it a fellow Starfleet ship or anyone else. - Kayleigh@crystyl:- However it is also a standard protocol that any friendly vessel with which communications can not be established should be treated with caution up front. As soon as the communication attempts - Kayleigh@crystyl:- failed, going to yellow alert would be the approved decision here" Kayleigh@crystyl | Shavi: "Called it!" she grins Kayleigh@crystyl | Matthews turns to her, "However Cadet... communication arrays can faulter in many ways. Even if a direct hail is not received, it is always prudent to expand the attempts to open broadcast - Kayleigh@crystyl:- general hails before declaring a failed attempt" Kayleigh@crystyl | Shavi shies away again, "Yes Professor..." Kayleigh@crystyl | Matthews continues, "It was still a good decision to begin readying your emergency repsonse units in case they were needed. However, even if a sensor malfunction is suspected they should never be- Kayleigh@crystyl:- disengaged for a diagnostic during an uncontrolled situation. Review your maintenance procedures" finally he focuses on Kerafar, "Cadet, command is never easy; everyone is always looking to you - Kayleigh@crystyl:- for definitive guidance. That's the same on the bridge as it is in engineering or any where else on the ship. If you are not decisive, your crew will not be decisive" NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar nods, "Yes, I'll be sure to keep that in mind for next time, Professor." Kayleigh@crystyl | CDT Iona, "Sir, can you explain why we didn't detect the ship sooner?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Matthews smirks, "Didn't you?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"The anomalous readings... they /were/ the ship..." Kayleigh@crystyl | CDT Iona frowns with confusion, "But... how? Some sort of cloak?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Matthews, "Nothing so fanciful. Most modern Starfleet vessels would not be caught out by this, but you never know when you will be applying your knowledge somewhere which doesn't have our - Kayleigh@crystyl:- technology; planetary polar regions can - with some careful manouvering - mask a ship's presence on less refined sensor systems" Kayleigh@crystyl | CDT Iona pouts a little, "Eugh... curveballs..." Kayleigh@crystyl perks a brow, "Fascinating. This warrants further study" NPC@annpc#557 | Kerafar: "I didn't know that either..." Kayleigh@crystyl | Matthews chuckles, "I wouldn't expect any of you to, that's why I'm teaching it to you now. Alright, good job overall team. But you've still got some polishing to do on your inter-ship protocols - Kayleigh@crystyl:- and procedures before next months exams start. I will send you all focus areas for your next few self study sessions. But that will be all for today. Dismissed" — Kayleigh@crystyl | Later in the day, Mariel returns from a session at the Chlasi Temple to find Kay sat reading alone at her usual spot in the dining hall Mariel Tanglao@anncaris grabs a drink for herself at the replicator before making her way over to the table, "Evening Kay! Mind if I join you?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Of course not" she comments before looking up from her PADD, "How was the temple?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris takes a seat, "Just the usual, but I think I'm making progress. It takes a lot of practice, don't usually see improvement overnight with these things! You probably know, with Vulcan mental - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - discipline and all that training you do." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Yes, there are no shortcuts in these matters. In fact, one never really stops practicing" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "Even the most experienced Esoterics still spend a lot of time practicing and honing their own abilities!" She takes a sip of her drink. "So, how's your day been Kay?" Kayleigh@crystyl sighs and upnods towards a group behind Mari, "See for yourself" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris glanves over curiously at where she nods towards Kayleigh@crystyl | Behind Mari, Kerafar slinks in with a tray of food, but a group of the other guys from the simulation are giving him a hard time about it, laughing as they walk away Mariel Tanglao@anncaris turns back to Kayleigh, "What happened to him?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"It was his turn in the big chair for today's simulation. We all died" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Oh. That's...not good. Was it his fault, ooor?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Not really, we all made mistakes. But he was in charge, and you know he has confidence issues. That makes it easy for the others to blame him" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "Yeah...I take it he wasn't that great at taking charge?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"He was not" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"What mistake did you make? If you're allowed to give details of the sim that is. And assuming we all made mistakes includes you too, not to presume you did of course!" Kayleigh@crystyl:"The mission was to locate a missing Starfleet ship in an unexplored system. It appeared and approached us, but whereas I recommended a red alert when it failed to hold position at a suitable - Kayleigh@crystyl:- distance, apparently where it failed to previously respond to hails in any way should have prompted a yellow alert. I was not aware of this protocol" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"You're not the only one! Am I supposed to know that, or is it a tactical/operations thing?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Unspecific, just a general starship operations protocol. Whilst the communication element is under operations, the alert status of the ship is always tactical so I should have known of this - Kayleigh@crystyl:- protocol still" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Don't feel too bad about it, we are still learning! If we knew every single protocol and exactly the right way to react, we wouldn't need to be studying now would we?" she smiles. "Anyways, we've - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- got that survey mission tomorrow to mix things up. Get some fresh air and time away from holodeck bridges." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Indeed" she stands, "I must stop by the library, so do excuse me. As for the words of encouragement; whilst they are appreciated, they are not required here. Others however, might be more in need" - Kayleigh@crystyl:- she glances again towards Kerafar, "I will see you back at the dorm" and heads out Mariel Tanglao@anncaris waves to Kayleigh as she heads off before looking around to see if Kerafar and the others are still around Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar sits quietly, picking at his food Mariel Tanglao@anncaris stands and makes her way over, "Hey Kera. Everything alright?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar looks up and forces a smile, "Hello Cadet Tanglao. I'm alright I guess. Is... there something you need me to do?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris shakes her head, "Oh no, just thought I'd check up on you. Doesn't look like you're having the best day..." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar sighs, "Is it that obvious?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"A little, yeah. Are you on that survey field class tomorrow?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar nods, "Yes, why?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Just wondering! It'll be a nice breath of fresh air, I think," she smiles Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar, "Well we will be visiting one of the biomes, so yes of course it will" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "And there should still be plenty for an engineer to do! They might be biomes, but they're still artificial, with plenty of Iconian tech throughout." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar, "Oh I get it now. You've been talking to Cadet Kayleigh haven't you, and now you are trying to cheer me up" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"You got me there. But I can still tell you're down even without talking to her." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar: "Oh right, you have those mind powers don't you" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris chuckles, "Mind powers. That's one way to put them yes...but I can't actually read minds with them. It's complicated. I mean just by looking at you." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar, "Ah. I didn't think I was that much of a mess... shows what I know" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris gives a reassuring smile, "I'm sure you'll get better at things over time. We're all still cadets after all! And we've all got things we aren't particularly good at. Even fully fledged officers - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - still have specialties and aren't good at everything!" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar, "But what I'm just not good enough at, um, enough?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I think you're good at plenty of things! Like what you do with tech, I can never manage that. And I'm not exactly great at Command stuff myself, either." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar smiles, "That is kind of you to say Cadet Tanglao. I will try not to let it get me down again" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles back, "Just keep working on it, I'm sure you'll get better! Maybe you won't be the next Jean-Luc Picard or anything, but you don't have to be on that level to be a good Starfleet officer." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"After all, we've all got our specialties, and we're not all made to be captains and admirals." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar, "I don't think I have any dellusions on that scale. For now I would be satisfied to simply make it to graduation" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I think you will! You're one of the best engineers I know. Anyways, see you tomorrow at the field mission!" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar nods, "Will do. And... thank you" he smiles, a little more sincerely now Mariel Tanglao@anncaris returns the smile and waves as she heads off — Kayleigh@crystyl | The next day, the cadets gather with the Cardassian Biology lead, Prof. Vatel. in one of the more luscious biomes Mariel Tanglao@anncaris finds and steps up to Kayleigh, "Enjoying the change of scenary?" Kayleigh@crystyl stands from checking her bag, "It is quite aesthetically pleasing" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles, "That it is! And nice to get some fresh air out here too. Wish we could visit more often, but since the entire surface is a massive nature reserve, we have to apply for permits to get - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - down here on our own. I get why, but it would be nice to have a public park somewhere. Maybe on the edge of one of those Iconian facilities where there's already tech among the ecosystem." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I have seen a petition for such a thing circulating the promenade. Apparently there is a lot of surveying to be done to fully catalogue the resident life first before establishing where and where - Kayleigh@crystyl:- not to allow disruption" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "I can see why! This place is just deeming with species. It's like trying to catalogue hundreds of new planets, all in one. Might take a while, but hopefully we can understand a specific - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - ecosystem well enough to build a park soon..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"That would be pleasant" Kayleigh@crystyl | Vatel pipes up clapping her hands a few times, "Alright everyone, gather around for your assignments" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Looks like it's time to get started!" She steps over to gather around the professor Kayleigh@crystyl joins her along with the rest of the class Kayleigh@crystyl | Vatel: "Ok, so today we are going to be conducting ecological surveys of the area. Whilst this is still a class, our findings will still contribute towards the larger efforts to map the area. So - Kayleigh@crystyl:- I expect nothing but the most refined results from all of you" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods eagerly as she listens Kayleigh@crystyl | Vatel pulls out a PADD, "I have already taken the liberty of dividing you into groups, "Cadets Shavinnia, Tanglao and Gibson. You will take the northern arc. Cadets Kayleigh, Miklos and Kerafar, - Kayleigh@crystyl:- the south..." she proceeds to rattle off more names of npc's we haven't met yet as she continues to divide the group Mariel Tanglao@anncaris moves over to join her group while Miklos shuffles up to Kayleigh Kayleigh@crystyl:"Seems we do not get to collaborate on this excursion. Unfortunate, your expertise would have been valuable" she offers to Mari as they part ways Kayleigh@crystyl | Shavi also links an arm through Miklos', "Running off without even giving me a goodbye kiss?" she pouts playfully Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles, "I'm sure you'll make do on your own! You're pretty good with science. Probably that good Vulcan education and all!" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos meanwhile turns back to Shavi with a grin, leaning in for a goodbye kiss, "As you like..." Kayleigh@crystyl | Shavi takes her prize kiss, "And don't you forget it!" she winks and heads off to her group Kayleigh@crystyl:"I will endeavour to survive as always" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos steps up beside Kayleigh, "I'm Cadet Miklos. Don't think we've worked together much yet." Kayleigh@crystyl:"We have not, but I am aware of who you are" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar joins them, "And, uh, I'm Kerafar. But... you know that" Kayleigh@crystyl nods, "I do. But I am uncertain if the two of you are familiar" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos nods, "We've met. Shavi told me about your sim yesterday." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar: "She did? Wonderful..." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "Let's try to do better here, shall we?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar, "Um, yeah. Sure. I mean, it's not like a rogue starship isn't going to sneak up on us out here right" he chuckles Kayleigh@crystyl:"The odds of that happening are negligible" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos grins, "Well, we've got security and tactical on our team so we shouldn't have to worry about that. No science specialist, but I did grow up on a particularly lush part of Earth. I'll - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - see us through this." Kayleigh@crystyl slings her bag over her shoulder, "As you wish" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "Come on. We've got the south. Let's see what we find." Kayleigh@crystyl | As they walk, Kerafar slaps a bug biting he arm, "You've done this before, right? This is... safe?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "If they're doing a cadet expedition here, it's probably safe." He eyes Kerafar, "From what I've read on Bolian biology, the bugs probably have more to worry about," he chuckles Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar, "Maybe tell that to the bugs..." he says while fumbling for some spray to relieve the irritation Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "You'll be fine! Even if the bugs do have some venom or something, it's nothing modern medicine can't treat." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar: "V- venom?" he panicks even more Kayleigh@crystyl sighs and punches a hypo to his neck, "There. Now you will be immune to anything here for the next few hours" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar jumps at first but relaxes and smiles, "Oh, thank you" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "We should probably be scanning the bugs instead of swatting them. I heard insect species are some of the hardest to categorize. Were the last ones to be fully IDed on Earth, and a lot - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - of species went extinct before we even knew they existed." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Shall we prioritize them then?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos glances back to Kerafar, "Not sure we need to. They seem to be coming to us," he grins Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos takes out his tricorder, starting to scan a nearby bug Kayleigh@crystyl | The bug flies away as soon as he nears it, circling around stinging him on the back of the neck Kayleigh@crystyl:"It would appear that you are correct" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos rubs the back of his neck, "Maybe we should try catching them. Hard to scan when they're buzzing around and trying to eat us..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I will see what I can learn from the flora. Perhaps determine a relationship between them and the insect life as is commonly seen which can be weaponized against them in the form of a trap" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar watches her walk off with a somewhat blank look, "She really is tactical through and through..." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos chuckles, "That she is. You're not too out of place here, I hope? Engineering specialty and all?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar, "No more than I was yesterday in that sim" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "I'll let you know if we run into the Iconian tech or something. Otherwise, you can stay behind me if you like." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar: "Works for me" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos makes his way over to Kayleigh, "Any luck with rigging up a trap?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"I am still gathering data. A broad sampling may be required" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "Well, since you're working on the plants already, we can survey them. Then we can use that information to trap insects, and maybe insects to lure even bigger things in. That could be - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - a strategy," he grins. "Logical, right?" Kayleigh@crystyl perks a brow, "I believe our mission parameters are to study the ecosystem, not to hunt it" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "Hey animals are usually shy. Except the bugs that bite you. Can't hurt to know what they like so we can lure them for some scans. And if we catch any bugs, we'll release them once - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - we're all done." Kayleigh@crystyl stands and turns to him, "Very well. I will see about setting some non-invasive lures" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "Perfect. Need us to help scan some of the plantlife too?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"That would be more expedient than doing nothing" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos nods to Kerafar, "You heard the lady. Let's get a start on the plants, first." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar nods, "Sure, I can do that" Kayleigh@crystyl starts to get the feeling she drew the short straw in this grouping as she moves away again to continue her survey Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos does a bit of scanning, slowly inching closer to her as he does, "So. This science work isn't too far out of your comfort zone?" Kayleigh@crystyl glances over her shoulder, "Not at all. I have in fact been considering science as an alternative, or at least a secondary field" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "Really? Why's that?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Recent events have drawn us towards a natural inquisitive state" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "You mean all the alternate universe business?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Well, life at the Heart has generally been more science focused than I was used to before anyway. But yes, that has certainly served as a catalyst" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "There's plenty of work for tactical and security too. Those future ships, the Terrans, and who knows what else might come through those rifts." Kayleigh@crystyl:"There is no denying that, and I have certainly seen my fair share of field experience already thanks to my tactical role. This is why the decision remains unsettled" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "Which one do you like more? Or is that what you're trying to figure out now?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Both have their merits and benefits, and are on equal standing should I decide to progress the original career plan of a command path" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos nods, "So Command's what you want to aim for?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Is it not what everyone aspires to when they first join?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "Maybe not everyone." He glances at Kerafar, "Think Cadet Kerafar there probably wants to make Chief Engineer instead. Maybe starship design. But yeah, Command's what I'm hoping for - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - too," he grins Kayleigh@crystyl:"As I thought. And yes, you may be right about Kerafar. Perhaps not /everyone/ joins with that plan" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos nods, "I guess tactical transitions more naturally to command, but plenty of good science officers end up as great captains too. I guess it can go either way. More about what you want -- Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - to do in your career before you make it to command. Either one you have a particular passion for?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Not overly. I enjoy aspects of both, which is why I was considering taking science as a secondary at least" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "Have you started taking some more science classes, getting into it more? Or still at the considering stages?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Still considering mostly, I am not taking any dedicated classes just yet" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "You have a good friend in Science, right?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"I assume you mean Cadet Tanglao" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "Yes, her. She can give you some good insight into science life, probably." Kayleigh@crystyl:"And she already has" — Kayleigh@crystyl | The cadets continue making decent progress on their survey Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos makes his way up to Kayleigh again, "Tricorder's picking up mostly the same plant species we've already scanned now. Any progress on insect baiting? Might be time to move on to the - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - animals." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I think we've got enough to work from" she nods Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "Perfect. Let's get started on the bugs, then." He flips his tricorder open again. "So...what makes you want to shoot for Command? Is it the romanticized stories of all the legendary - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - captains?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"It is simply the logical career peak to aim for within Starfleet" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "All logic and no romance at all? Not even a little bit?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"You are aware that I am Vulcan, I assume" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos nods, "So you Vulcans aren't affected by fancy stories at all? Could've sworn I read something about an increase in Vulcan enlistment after missions involving Spock on the Enterprise - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - became popular," he smirks Kayleigh@crystyl:"Such stories would have served to highlight the importance of working with Starfleet and the wider galaxy. For many not already associated with the Science Academy, it would be logical to pursue - Kayleigh@crystyl:- knowledge from further afield" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "Of course there's a logical explanation for it...no room for fun at all? You've got pasttimes at least, right?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"That is a common misconception. The no room for fun thing, that is. Not that I have no pasttimes... Part of maintaining a healthy mental discipline is balancing one's daily activity. Vulcans do in - Kayleigh@crystyl:- fact have a profound appreciation for the arts, for example" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "What about...other kinds of pasttimes? You know, I heard you Vulcans do arranged marriages and all that." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I do not see how that would count as a pasttime" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "Not marriage, but...come on, don't tell me the rumours of Vulcans only mating once every seven years is true. That one's definitely a misconception, right?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"It is not something we feel the need to discuss. Whilst I understand that Humans are generally more forthcoming in discussing their sexuality, it has not been my experience to date that it is a - Kayleigh@crystyl:- topic of such persistent enthusiasm" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "Fair enough. I just often see you sitting alone at that table all the time. So I was wondering, you have someone at home, like an arranged marriage or something?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"I do not" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "Don't tell me- you're one of those studies before anything else people? Or just haven't found the right person yet?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Such a statement would imply there was an active search for such a person. My purpose at the annex is to be a Cadet, so prioritizing studying is of course natural. But as I said before, Vulcan - Kayleigh@crystyl:- philosophy also teaches balance, and I am no exception to appreciation the more aesthetic elements" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos nods, "So you're not actively /looking/, but you wouldn't be adverse to such a person if they came along?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"There can be value in companionship" Kayleigh@crystyl | Behind them, Kerafar glances over his shoulder with a frown at Miklos Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos smiles, oblivious to Kerafar's frown, "Glad you can see that value." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Why?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "Well, it's a good thing to appreciate. Best not to close yourself off to opportunities like that, in case you miss something good." Kayleigh@crystyl:"And this... makes you glad?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos smirks, "More opportunities are good for me, too." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I am not sure I follow" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos frowns, "I mean, if you're open to companionship, then other people...you get where that's going logically?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"You are suggesting that you would make a fitting choice for companionship?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos nods, "It's an option. If you want it." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar has enough and steps in, pulling Miklos by the shoulder to turn him away from Kay, "Don't you think that's enough? I doubt Cadet Shavinnia would agree that it's an option. And I might not- Kayleigh@crystyl:- have mind powers like some, but it doesn't exactly seem like Cadet Kayleigh is overly enthralled either" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "Hey, let her consider it at least Kerafar. She can answer for herself." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar: "That is besides the point and you know it" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos frowns, "Looking out for Shavi are we? If only you had conviction like this against that rogue starship..." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar, "Yeah, well... that was different... yeah" Kayleigh@crystyl:"That was a high pressure situation and unexpected circumstance. This appears to be a conflict of personal morality" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos glances to Kayleigh, "What about you, any morality conflicts for you?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Situations like this are why companionship is so low down on my list. Shavi is a friend so even if there was an interest, it would be overruled by a desire not to cause her emotional distress. - Kayleigh@crystyl:- Frankly I am surprised that you would be so keen to do so to her" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos: "Shavi's got plenty of experience with these things, I'm sure she'll be fine." He smirks at Kerafar. "It sounds like someone else might want to be in line for her anyways." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar flushes a little at the suggestion, "That has nothing to do with it. You are being unreasonable to Cadet Kayleigh and disrespectful to Cadet Shavinnia. And... And I think you should leave- Kayleigh@crystyl:- it at that and walk away from this conversation now!" Kayleigh@crystyl perks a brow, almost surprised by the onset of confidence Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Miklos seems a little taken aback too, "Hey, relax, I was just talking hypotheticals here." He pats Kerafar on the back, "Really could've used this conviction on the bridge though. Maybe we - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - need to get you in a damsel in distress sim..." Despite the comment, he does actually comply and walks off to do some scanning elsewhere Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar sighs and deflates as he finally relaxes Kayleigh@crystyl watches Miklos walk away and looks back to Kerafar, "That was... unexpected" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar: "I couldn't keep standing there while he insulted you and Shavinnia. Sorry, I know it wasn't my business..." Kayleigh@crystyl sighs softly, "It was also ill-conceived as I am quite capable of handling things myself" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar shrinks away a bit more Kayleigh@crystyl steps up to him, "It was however also chivalrous. Sort of. So thank you for that" she leans up and kisses him on the cheek Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar flushes deeply this time, staring at her in shock Kayleigh@crystyl holds a finger of warning up to his face, "This is an expression of gratitude, nothing more. Do NOT read more into this". and promptly moves off to continue her work — Kayleigh@crystyl once again, towards the end of the day Mariel finds Kayleigh in the lounge. A little surprisingly so perhaps since they were on the same mission earlier, but she hasn't seen her until now Mariel Tanglao@anncaris makes her way over to Kayleigh's table again, "So, how'd the mission go Kay? I hope Miklos and Kerafar weren't a handful?" Kayleigh@crystyl looks up, "Hello Mari. Our results for the day were acceptable. You?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris takes a seat opposite Kayleigh, "It went very well for us! Being in science it was naturally more my element, not to mention the environment's not too different from where I grew up. Though - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - if we're talking Earth equivalents, it's probably closest to where Miklos is from." Kayleigh@crystyl:"He said as much. A lot" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris chuckles, "I would've expected nothing less from him. Was he actually any help, or just a lot of boasting?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"He tried to help... at least I think he did..." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"But it wasn't very helpful in the end, or?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Actually I think perhaps he was, just not in the way he intended. As for what he did intend... I find myself facing something of a quandry and would welcome your insights" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris gives Kayleigh a curious glance, "I'd be happy to help! What happened, exactly?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Cadet Miklos made very clear his intent to engage in sexual relations with me" puts it as bluntly and indescretely as only a Vulcan can, probably not on purpose to cause comedic spitting out of - Kayleigh@crystyl:- drink. Probably… Mariel Tanglao@anncaris does indeed comedically spit out her drink, "Wha?" Kayleigh@crystyl blinks innocently and repeats precisely, even in tone, "Cadet Miklos made very clear his intent to engage in sexual relations with me" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris chuckles, "Oh, no I heard what you said, but..." she shakes her head. "Guess I shouldn't be surprised. His relationship with Shavi did start by cheating on someone else with her. I just didn't - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - expect him to be so blunt with you. Or for you to recount it so bluntly to me..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I see. I will attempt to 'fluff' the recount next time. But I was not aware of this prehistory with them, perhaps then there is no quandry after all" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"What exactly is the quandry? Are you debating whether to tell Shavi about all this?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"From my recent study of Orion culture I am aware that - despite their promiscuous reputation - they actual cherish personal bonds on a very deep and spiritual level. I was concerned that this - Kayleigh@crystyl:- behaviour from Miklos might not be amicable with Shavi's own perspective" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Oh I don't think Shavi will be pleased to hear it. I don't know if she'd /expect/ it, I guess you could say it would be logical to given how their own relationship started. But you know feelings - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- have a way of impeding logic..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Indeed. So the quandry remains then; inform Shavi and expose her to the potential emotional distress. Or say nothing and save her from it, assuming a more severe instance doesn't occur later on" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris hrms, "That is a quandry...if we don't tell her, Miklos might find someone who actually accepts his offer. And then that would be worse..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"With my overall lack of experience in this area, I am uncertain how best to proceed. Not that I am aware of any relationship history of yours either, but I have come to value your judgement. And - Kayleigh@crystyl:- you have been getting to know Shavi better than I of late" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "I can talk to Shavi, if it's a little less awkward for you. You did help me even out the awkwardness between us to begin with after all! Oh yeah, that was actually started because I saw - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - Miklos with her, back when he was with someone else..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"That is true. If you are willing, I would certainly welcome the support. Cadet Kerafar may also be willing to assist in this, as he seemed somewhat invested" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"What do you mean?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"He took an uncharacteristically confident stance against Cadet Miklos as he bore witness to all of this" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Really? Did he overhear the conversation and tell Miklos off or something?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"He was within earshot the entire time" she nods, "At one point he apparently could not stand by anymore and intervened. He stood up to Miklos and convinced him to stand down" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"That I didn't expect, but it's good for him. I think he could use some confidence like that." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Yes, I was quite surprised myself by it" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I'll talk to him about it too. Maybe he'd want to tell Shavi about it instead, or come with." Kayleigh@crystyl:"It may help to bolster this newfound confidence. At least then perhaps we can take that as a positive to come out of the whole situation" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles, "Good thinking, Kay! In the meantime, I hope things aren't going to be awkward between you and Shavi or anything?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"I see no reason why they should be" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"And Miklos?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"As I informed Kerafar at the time; I am quite capable of defending my own honour. Miklos may choose to pursue the matter, but there is no reason for me to be any more or less faultered by" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "That's good. You should be fine then, now that we have a resolution to that moral quandry of yours!" Kayleigh@crystyl:"A resolution which leaves me indebted to you. Of which I am not complaining, simply acknowledging your input" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles, "Well you helped me with Shavi before, so it's only fair. Now to track down Kerafar..." — Mariel Tanglao@anncaris tracks down Kerafar to one of the engineering rooms of the Academy, where he is doing after-class work Mariel Tanglao@anncaris steps inside, looking around and making her way towards the Bolian cadet, "Hey Kera. Busy day?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar looks up from his console with surprise, "Oh hello there Cadet Tanglao. Just running some calibrations here, nothing time sensitive. What brings you here?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles, "Well you guessed spot on last time that I've been talking to Kayleigh, so..." she smirks. "Got any guesses this time?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar flusters, "You've been... what did she say...?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Don't worry, it's all good. She said you stood up to Cadet Miklos?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar frowns, "The way he was brazenly pushing her was completely inappropriate" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Kay made it sound pretty blunt...was it really /that/ brazen?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar, "Don't get me wrong now, I'm not saying he was aggressive about it or anything. But she clearly had no interest and he just kept pushing her. Even if he wasn't involved with Cadet Shavi - Kayleigh@crystyl - it was just... rude!" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"He was pushing her too? That's a little far, even with all I know about Miklos..." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar waves his hands, "Not literally! He just wouldn't let it go, you know? Kept asking her about Vulcan mating habits and arranged marriages, and being very suggestive! I know it's not - Kayleigh@crystyl - outright wrong what he did - if you ignore the part about being disloyal to Cadet Shavi - but not everyone is as open as an Orion about such things, and I think Vulcans are very private like that" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "Yeah...well I'm glad you stood up to him! I mean, I'm sure Kayleigh could've handled him herself, but standing up to him was the right thing to do, and that's what we're supposed to be - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - about as Starfleet, right?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar smiles, holding a hand to his cheek, "Yes, she told me the very same thing in fact. Trust a Vulcan to berate you in the same breath as thanking you, right?" he chuckles Mariel Tanglao@anncaris chuckles as well, looking to his hand curiously, "You didn't have to...physically stand up to him or anything, right? You just gave him a talking to?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar catches himself and flusters, "What? No! No, nothing like that" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris eyes the cheek he was holding his hand up to, "Had me worried for a second there, I thought he punched you or something. But Kay wouldn't omit a detail like that." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar smiles: "I'm sure anything like would have been reported there and then. Like I said, she simply said thank you. After berating me..." he chuckles Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Right. Anyways...Kay asked me to talk to Shavi about all this, since she isn't very experienced and all. Do you want to come with, since you were actually there and all?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar: "Oh, you mean you're going to tell her what happened?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "We decided it would be best. Miklos...probably isn't going to change his behaviour, and we should let Shavi know before he gets further- like if someone actually accepts his offer or - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - something like that." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar: "I think you are right. But I can't imagine he will be too happy about this" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"He almost certainly won't be. But I don't think Miklos will go as far as starting a fight over this or anything. Besides, Shavi might not talk to him about it right away or anything. We're just - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- giving her a heads up, and if she does confront Miklos about it, I'm sure she won't toss us in the deep end or anything." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar: "I can't help but notice you use the term 'us' in there..." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Well, if she chooses to confront Miklos about it right away, he'll figure out that either you or Kay told Shavi, even if Shavi doesn't say where she learned it from. You two were there, after all. - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- But like I said, Miklos just...has some issue with controlling certain impulses. I don't think he'll do anything drastic." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar: "That is true. I am just a little surprised I guess that you would want me there. But, if you think I can help then... then of course!" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I think it would be helpful to have someone who was actually there. Come on, let's go find Shavi." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar packs up his work, "Alright then, let us be off" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods and steps out, asking the computer out in the hall to locate Shavi before proceeding to lead the way Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"So how did the survey go, besides Miklos being rude and all?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar, "Well it wasn't exactly my field any more than the others. But Cadet Kayleigh was really very efficient. Apparently she has been considering switching to science, or at least taking it a- Kayleigh@crystyl:- second" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"She's been discussing that with you too?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar shakes his head, "No, but it came up when Miklos kept trying to get close to her. I simply overheard the conversation. For what it's worth, I think she would make a fine scientist. But - Kayleigh@crystyl:- also a great leader one day" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "I think she can do well in science. Not to generalize or anything, but I'm pretty sure Vulcan education prepares people very well for science, with the emphasis on logic and all. There's - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - plenty of Vulcans who are great at non-scientific things, but...you know what I'm trying to say." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar smiles, "I think so, yes" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"But Kay does have quite a talent for tactical thinking though, which would transfer very well to Command, since Command's all about making well-calculated decisions." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar nods, "Like when we had those mercenaries come and reinforce the annex. I hadn't really worked with her before, but that day she was really great!" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles, "That she certainly was! And apparently she was pretty helpful on the Shenzhou when the Terrans came through, too." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar, "She's not the only one of our class gaining a reputation though. You are both doing very well for yourselves" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris chuckles, "Well she did drag me into a good few of her adventures!" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar, "Wow... I guess she really is a leader at heart then. I thought it was just me!" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "She is! Certainly tends to take the lead when we're working together too. I assume you're pretty committed to Engineering and haven't thought much about career changes or going into - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - Command?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar shakes his head, "Oh no! Nothing of the sorts. I know my place, and I'm no leader!" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Nothing wrong with that if you ask me! Not everyone's a natural leader. I guess that's what Command training is for, to teach people like you and me the basics of leadership for when we become - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- full officers." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar nods, "Of course. And Cadet Shavi should be around here somewhere I think" — Mariel Tanglao@anncaris and Kerafar find Shavi in another room where she is working away on a console Mariel Tanglao@anncaris waves as Shavi notices them, "Hey Shavi!" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Shavi waves back, "Hey Mari. Cadet Kerafar. I'm guessing the two of you didn't come in here at the same time by coincidence." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris chuckles, "You guessed right!" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar - feeling more out of place in present company than during the survey - remains shy and quiet, letting the friends talk Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Shavi: "So, what brings you here?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Well, we wanted to tell you about something...that you probably should know." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar nods Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Shavi looks on expectantly as Mari looks around a little awkwardly as well Mariel Tanglao@anncaris turns her gaze to Kerafar, "I think you should explain it. You were there after all, while I just have second-hand information from someone." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar stammers, "I- but- but- you said you told Cadet Kayleigh that you were going to speak to her. I mean I... I wouldn't want to get in the way of your promise..." he squirms Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"We're already talking to Shavi. I can do the talking about the...how she wants to deal with this and all. I think it would be better for you to tell her what happened though, since I wasn't - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- actually there to see for myself and you were. I can explain if you really don't want to! I might not do it as well as the one who stood up to help Kay though," she smiles Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar shifts awkwardly, "And here I thought she was supposed to be the frustratingly logical one... alright, but don't blame me if I make a mess of things. I'm not very good with this stuff..." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I can help if you need to! But I'm sure you'll do fine, Kera." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Meanwhile Shavi looks between the two, waiting for them to tell her what's going on Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar looks to Shavi, "Well... we um, we decided it would be best to tell you what happened on the surface earlier between Cadets Miklos and Kayleigh" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Shavi: "Miklos and Kayleigh? What do you mean?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar: "There were, um, sexual advances..." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Shavi narrows her eyes, "You mean you caught them..." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar waves his hands, "Woah, no no! Nothing actually happened between them! But... Cadet Miklos was quite determined to change that, you see" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Shavi: "So...he was making advances towards her?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar nods, "Yes, and whilst she is the last person I would consider to be naive; I felt that she was not fully comprehending the depth of his context and it got to the point where I felt - Kayleigh@crystyl - obliged to step in and stop him" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Shavi: "Is that what Mari meant by stood up to defend Kayleigh?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar nods sheepishly, "Please don't misunderstand; there was no physical violence or even a threat of it. It was just more... aggressively pursuing her, I guess you could say" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Shavi: "I think I know what you mean. How...aggressive was he?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar: "Nothing to make it an ethical concern I think. But he certainly did not want to take no for an answer. Not that she was outright saying no, because she did not seem to register what he - Kayleigh@crystyl:- was suggesting for the most part. But he kept pushing her on personal details; Vulcan mating practices, and her own attachment to them. That kind of thing" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Shavi facepalms, "Oh goddess...he's worse than an Orion male in puberty..." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar: "I wouldn't know, but... that does sound like an accurate analogy from the mental image..." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Shavi: "I was hoping I could break him out of that behaviour, but I guess he hasn't changed at all. And...how did you stand up to him?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar thinks, "Well, when I felt he was pushing her too hard, I pulled him back his shoulder to turn him away and then stepped between them. Then I insisted... oh stars /I/ insisted? I- I think- Kayleigh@crystyl:- I did. I insisted that he drop it all and walk away. He complained but didn't really argue so much, and that was the last we really spoke" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Shavi smiles, "Thank you for stepping in, Kerafar. I think Vulcans aren't very used to dealing with personal things so upfront. I'm sure your intervention was very appreciated." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar smiles and holds his cheek again, "I think you might be right..." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Shavi eyes the cheek as well, "You're /sure/ there wasn't anything physical?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar flushes and stammers, "Wh- what? No, there was no violence..." he chooses his words carefully Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Shavi narrows her eyes, "No violence. Don't tell me you and Kay..." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris now looks between the two trying to figure out what's going on Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar waves his hands again, "No no! She just... said thank you, that's all. And she was very clear about that" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Shavi smirks, "And...how did she say thank you?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Shavi leans in slightly, giving a slight sniff before her smile widens, "So she really did..." Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar's eyes widen, "Wait... what?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Umm...what is going on?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Shavi grins, "Orion intuition. I think Kay thanked you in a very specific way, didn't she?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerefar flushes and nods, "Yes she did" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris looks to Kerafar: "What...did Kay do?" Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar, "Well, after berating me for intervening when she is capable of defending her own honour... she said it was still very chivalrous and thanked me with a kiss on the cheek" he pauses, "Oh! - Kayleigh@crystyl - but she was /very/ clear about it just being a suitable thank you and made sure that I didn't misread it for anything more!" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris widens her eyes, "She thanked you with what?" — Mariel Tanglao@anncaris makes her way back into the lounge, looking around to see if Kayleigh is still around Kayleigh@crystyl is indeed sat reading quietly in her spot Mariel Tanglao@anncaris steps over towards Kayleigh, "I thought you'd still be here, Kay." Kayleigh@crystyl looks up, "Hello agin Mari. Were you successful in discussing things with Shavi? Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "We were! We explained everything to Shavi. As I thought, she wasn't happy about it, but it wasn't entirely unexpected either. She won't talk to Miklos right away about it, to not throw - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - you and Kerafar under the shuttle." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Perhaps this insight will empower her to take better control of their relationship and restore it to a more natural balance. I am unfamiliar with the mechanics behind them, but I suspect that if - Kayleigh@crystyl:- she wished it she could quite effortlessly exert her will over him if she let herself use her pheromones" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris takes a seat, "She /could/, but I don't think that's the kind of relationship she's looking for. Speaking of pheromones..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Yes?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"You left out a little detail in your story of what happened..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I left out many little details. To recount events in absolute detail would be tiresome for all concerned, this is quite normal" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I guess that's true. And it wasn't exactly relevant to the Miklos situation. But Shavi figured it out..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"What did she figure out?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"That you apparently /kissed/ Kerafar?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"There is no apparently about it. That is exactly what I did" she sips her tea Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Yes, he confirmed as much too. He says you did it to thank him?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Correct. Knowing of his confidence problems, the fact that he acted as he did was quite noble. Overcoming such personal boundaries deserve reward, and given the context of this situation I judged - Kayleigh@crystyl:- it to be the most effective means of reinforcing his positivity" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I...suppose that makes logical sense. But a kiss? You don't think he might...read too much into it or something? Or do you intend him to...?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"I made it perfectly clear to him that there was nothing more to it than the gesture of gratitude and acknowledgement; and that he was to not read anything more into it" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Well he does seem a little...affected by it. I caught him touching his cheek too, I thought Miklos hit him or something. So did Shavi at first, as a matter of fact..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Are you implying that he has not done as instructed?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Oh he definitely remembered your instructions. But I think it still had some effect on him, if that makes sense. Not everyone has your Vulcan level of emotional control!" Kayleigh@crystyl hrms, "Then I do not believe there is cause for concern if he has retained the message. This does however warrant close observation to ensure nothing untoward evolves from this" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"So you definitely didn't intend to give off any...romantic intentions towards him for helping you out?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"That would be quite hypocritical after rejecting Miklos' advances on the grounds of having no desire to pursue such distractions" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Was that your reason for rejecting him? I don't think you told me that detail. I just figured he wasn't your type, but that makes more sense," she chuckles Kayleigh@crystyl:"Your assumption is not wrong, and I did express this to him to some degree" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "But you definitely also aren't interested in pursuing such distractions with Kerafar either." Kayleigh@crystyl:"From what little I know of him, I might enjoy his companionship the same way I enjoy yours or T'Mer's. But the kind of relationship you are referring to - whilst not impossible - is... unlikely to - Kayleigh@crystyl:- draw my attention outside of... extenuating circumstances" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"That's what I thought, too. Probably do want...how did you put it? Close observation to make sure he doesn't get the wrong idea. I mean he did remember what you said, but also remember, feelings - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- and logic don't go hand in hand." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Yes. The last thing I would want would be to undermine his newfound- Kayleigh@crystyl:- confidence by allowing him to fall down a path that can only lead to disappointment" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Very true! Speaking of newfound confidence, I think he's definitely starting to get better. He wasn't exactly the image of a smooth talker while explaining to Shavi or anything, but I did manage - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- to get him to do the explaining, and he did a pretty good job of it." Kayleigh@crystyl:"That is gratifying to hear. I don't know if it will go so far as to help him with command training or not, but this is why I wanted to reinforce the positive message earlier" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I can see the logic. Though a kiss might have been a little too personal of a reward." Kayleigh@crystyl:"It was a very personal situation, so a personal reward seemed most appropriate" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Right, that does make sense. Well, I'm sure he won't read too far into it! And I don't think you've boosted his confidence enough for him to start actively pursuing a relationship with you or - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- anything! Just...make sure to reinforce the positive message and not the personal aspect of it." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Of course. It was a rare situation and not something I anticipate repeating any time soon. Therefore the nature of the reward has no reason to repeat either" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Probably not. I doubt Miklos will try that again. Not sure what got in his head for him to try it in the first place, even!" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Well as you pointed out before, it seems to be in his nature" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Yeah, but Shavi was interested in him when he started a relationship with her despite already being in one. You definitely weren't. Maybe he just picked you because you're not involved with anyone - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- else at the moment?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Perhaps. Perhaps he did the same thing when he first got together with Shavi. It just happened that the feelings were mutual there" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"In any case, now he knows you definitely aren't interested, he shouldn't be causing you any more trouble, right?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"I certainly hope that is the case. Distractions like today are quite inconvenient" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "Now I just have to be prepared in case he comes after me..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I suspect that Shavi will keep him from doing anything more like that. But even if she terminates things with him as a result of this, I doubt he would have the will to pursue any of our classmates" Kayleigh@crystyl adds, "Thank you for your assistance today" with an almost smile — Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smirks, “Don’t say you’re planning to give me a kiss now to say thank you!” she teases Kay. Kayleigh@crystyl perks a brow and stares back a moment. Then she stands with a shrug and begins to move around the table towards Mari, “Well if you insist, I suppose it is only logical to treat all of my classmates fairly after all…” Mariel Tanglao@anncaris backs up, sliding a little off the side of her chair, “...what? No, Kay it was just a joke. You don’t have to-” Kayleigh@crystyl closes, “No, no. I see now that I was being inconsiderate and must correct this” she starts leaning in Mariel Tanglao@anncaris jumps back out of her chair, “Kay!” and is forced to run out of the lounge to evade the kiss monster Kayleigh@crystyl strolls after, both arms slightly raised in an almost zombie-like fashion, “But Mari, it is only logical. You must comply…” disappearing out of the lounge to a sea of entertained chuckles. Kayleigh@crystyl | Kerafar is one of the chuckling crowd, sitting with a group of friends at a table across the room from where the playful pair were sat. He mutters to himself, “And they say Vulcans don’t have a sense of humour…”. — Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles back, "Always happy to help, Kay!"
