Stardate 99716.5

This time it is Cadet Tanglao who serves to pull the others into affairs above their station by proxy when she is drafted in to aid the investigation of the Courageous' infiltration by way of her unique psionic abilities.
The flagship's dwindling roster in the wake of the attack means that the cadets are going to have to step up to stations they hadn't dare yet dream of even being supervised at, let alone running themselves. What's the worst that could happen...
View Episode
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | It has been almost two weeks since the Courageous incident and the Academy lockdown. Things in the Academy have largely gone back to normal, though the word is that Admiral Enelya is absent -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - from the Sphere, and DSEC is currently being run by Vice Admiral Ali, her second-in-command. The official word, according to those cadets like Kayleigh with parents serving in the nearby -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - ships, is that the Admiral is safe and simply preoccupied elsewhere, but the more conspiracy theory minded have of course begun to speculate
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris and Kayleigh are once again sitting in Rouhani's class as she wraps up the lecture for the day
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Rouhani: "...despite these risks, as Starfleet officers, you will often find yourself in situations where you have no choice but to work with alien technology. Hopefully when such a situation -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - arises, you'll have a dedicated Engineering specialist to aid you, but we can't always know when we'll encounter foreign tech. That's why next week, we're going to have a special guest over -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - with a few devices from this region. You'll be demonstrating your knowledge of these protocols to me next week, so commit them to memory.
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Rouhani: "That's it for today, everyone. Cadets Kayleigh and Tanglao, stay behind a moment. Everyone else, you're dismissed."
Kayleigh@crystyl doubletakes at being called to stay back, glancing over the Mariel briefly before continuing to pack up her things while the others filter out
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris looks to the professor as her name is called, glancing to Kayleigh before following suit and packing as well. As the others all leave the room, Rouhani speaks again
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Rouhani chuckles, "Seems like I'm always giving you two special assignments. Probably because you're both in my class, despite training for different divisions."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Special assignments Professor? Do you have something we can assist with then?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Rouhani: "Not me. Professor H'Raarin. I believe you worked with him during the lockdown. But you don't have his classes this year, so he asked me to pass the word along. It's nothing urgent, -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - so it wasn't worth chiming your combadges for."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Professor H'Raarin? Whilst I am certainly grateful for any opportunity, especially from a professor we have no classes with, shouldn't any of his extra curricular tasks be assigned to his own class?
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Rouhani: "As I understand it, he's assigned it to your Iconian friend, but he wants you two along too. You should talk to him about the details."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Ah yes, that makes sense. T'Mer does draw a lot of attention, and whenever she does we default into place as her mentors"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Rouhani nods, "She's the first Iconian cadet, after all. Well, I'm just passing H'Raarin's message along. You're dismissed for now. Might want to swing by his office sooner rather than later, -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - though."
Kayleigh@crystyl stands and nods, "We'll head straight over there now, thank you Professor"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Rouhani smiles, "You're welcome, Cadets."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris stands and heads out as well
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris looks to Kayleigh once they step into the halls, "You think this has to do with the lockdown?"
Kayleigh@crystyl hrms, "It is certainly possible, though I can not guess what possible special task he might have for T'Mer"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Maybe he wants to ask the Iconians for something and wants her along? That doesn't sound very likely, we have other proper diplomatic channels with them, right?"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"I do not know the specifics, but it is logical to surmise that there are at least more proper channels than side jobs for a 1st year cadet"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "Can't really think of any other explanation, though. I guess we'll have to go and find out for ourselves!"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Fortunately his office is not far, so we will not to guess for long"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The two soon reach H'Raarin's office. Mariel chimes the doorbell and the Professor's voice replies, "Come in."
Kayleigh@crystyl steps in, standing attentively before his desk with Mariel, "Professor, we received word that you wished to see us"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin looks up from behind his desk, "Ah, Cadets. Have a seat."
Kayleigh@crystyl sits, "Thank you Sir"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris takes a seat as well, "We're told you have a special assignment for T'Mer and want us along?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin smiles, "The opposite, actually. I have a special assignment for you and thought it would be a good experience for T'Mer to come along and see Starfleet Security in action on board an -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - active starship."
Kayleigh@crystyl perks a brow, "That is contrary to what we were led to believe, though perhaps that was a supposition on Professor Rouhani's part. Ths is certainly a curious development, what is this assignment -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- to an active starship and why is it being tasked to us over your own students?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "Because Cadet Tanglao is the only person in the Sphere with the very rare talent of retrocognition."
Kayleigh@crystyl glances to Mariel, "Intriguing" saying no more, assuming Mar would want to speak up at that
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris doubletakes at the statement, "You want me to try and see something that happened somewhere?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin nods, "That's right."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I'm still in training with the Chlasi. I can't see things very precisely, if you need help with a security incident..."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "I'm aware of that. But in this instance, we're not actually looking for a particular moment. We don't even know which moment to look for. It's just that general information about -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - the past could come in useful."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"That seems a very broad criteria. Is this part of a Sphere research project?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "No, it's part of a Starfleet Security investigation. I believe I told you after the lockdown about what was happening outside, correct?"
Kayleigh@crystyl nods, "More or less. So how do you hope for Mariel's ability to aid in this matter?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "As you're aware, Captain Dale and the other infiltrators on board the Courageous were beamed onto that ship, which was later destroyed. Which leaves us with no one to question. We -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - have computer experts scouring the Courageous' systems and databanks, but we don't have much to work with there so far. We're hoping that retrocognition might give us some more insights on -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - what Captain Dale was up to, and who else might have been collaborating with him."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"I see, by essentially touring the Couragous it is possible that Mariel's ability could generate fresh leads"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin nods, "Exactly. And since you're mentors for T'Mer too, I thought this would be a good learning experience for her as well to witness one of our investigations in progress. We operate -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - slightly differently from Coalition Security, after all."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"I am certain she will welcome the opportunity Sir"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "I've already talked to her about it after our class earlier. You'll be reporting to Commander Sh'raovel tomorrow. The plan is for you to spend the weekend on the Courageous. You'll -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - be getting duty hours, same as everyone else on the ship, but you'll still have off-duty time to work on your studies." He looks to Mariel, "I'll inform the Chlasi Temple and explain why -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - you'll be preoccupied this weekend."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles, "Thank you, Professor."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Yes, thank you Professor for granting us this opportunity"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "Thank you for agreeing to it, too. It might not lead to much, but Starfleet Security needs to explore every option available right now."
—
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The next day, Mariel, Kayleigh and T'Mer beams over to the USS Courageous, materializing on one of its transporter pads. They are greeted by an Andorian female wearing Commander pips
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Andorian: "Welcome to the Courageous. I'm Commander Jhasaa Sh'raovel."
Kayleigh@crystyl steps down, "Thank you, I am Cadet Kayleigh"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris steps down as well, "I'm Cadet Tanglao. And this is Cadet T'Mer," she gestures to the Iconian behind them
Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer steps down, waving at her introduction
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "So you're the first Iconian cadet we've heard so much about. It's an honour to have you on board." She gives T'Mer a nod before turning to lead the way
Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer - not knowing how else to really respond - returns the nod as closely as she can, following along with the others
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | As they step out into the halls, it becomes evident that the ship's interior design is heavily inspired by the Galaxy class, much like the external frame of the ship is
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "I'm the Security Chief here, and acting First Officer for the time being. T'Mer, you'll be working with me over the weekend."
Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer bows her head, "Understood Commander, I await your orders"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "You and Cadet Tanglao will be working Alpha Shift in Security tomorrow. I know you're not studying for Security, Cadet Tanglao, but a little experience in every department is -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - always useful. You'll be assigned to one of my officers each. We'll see if you have any of your psionic insights as you go around the ship."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "I can do that."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "Cadet Kayleigh. You're in Tactical, right?"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Yes Commander, that is correct"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "You'll be taking Beta Shift on the bridge when I'm in command, then. Cadet Tanglao- for the day after tomorrow, you'll be on the bridge for Beta shift too on the Science station, -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - which better suits your studies. It'll be a good learning experience, and it goes without saying that Captain Dale spent time on the bridge and ready room, so it might help our investigation -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - too. Kayleigh and T'Mer, you'll be working consistent shifts and roles over the next two days."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"If I may ask Commander, are we taking taking these shifts under assigned guidance officers? Only from the way you say it, there is a suggestion there that this might not be the case. And given our -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- lack of knowledge when it comes to the details of what transpired here recently, I would not want to presume anything just yet"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "Cadets Tanglao and T'Mer will be given guidance officers in Security, because Tanglao isn't a trained Security specialist and T'Mer is only a first year cadet. You'll be on your -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - own for the bridge shifts, as you're second year cadets working in your discipline of choice, so you'll know how to operate your stations well enough on your own. As for what happened here -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - recently, it shouldn't impact your bridge duties, but I'll give you a summary. It might help with your psionic investigating, and I bet you're curious to know too, aren't you?"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"It is a topic of natural curiosity right now"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel nods, "I can see why. Well, the short version is that after the news about Commodore Th'zorril, I started looking into our crew here, especially the senior staff. I found some -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - things that didn't add up, so I called Commander Chei over. She's a Betazoid I served with in a previous posting who's also working on one of the ships assigned to the Heart."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"I see, so it was your investigation that first exposed the infiltrators here"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel nods, "Chei found something, but she was stunned and thrown in the brig. The infiltrators tried to get me, but I overpowered Lieutenant Siduk, one of the traitors in my Security -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - department they sent after me. Things got out of control quickly after that. Captain Dale tried to throw me into the brig under the excuse that I was one of the infiltrators. I had some -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - circumstantial evidence, but nothing solid. When the Captain gave the order to arrest me though, most of my Security personnel trusted me and refused to do it. That's when the fighting broke -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - out.
Kayleigh@crystyl:"That must have been quite the ordeal for everyone. From what you have said; your being acting XO and assigning me to unsupervised bridge duty, I take it a reasonable proportion of the senior staff -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- were involved with the infiltration?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "That's correct. I'm the highest officer in the chain of command left who wasn't an infiltrator. Or killed in action. Commander Ristovski came over to our side eventually, he was -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - Second Officer but he wasn't an infiltrator, at least not judging by his actions. We'll never know for sure now, but I think he only supported the Captain out of misplaced loyalty. When he -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - realized that, he helped us, but unfortunately it cost him his life."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"My condolences. So - and forgive me if this is speaking out of place - but you said you are the highest ranking officer remaining, but you are acting first officer?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel nods, "Admiral Ali's taken command of the Courageous personally. He wants to keep an eye on things here after what happened, but he also has the fleet to run at the moment, so most -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - of the day-to-day management falls to me."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"I see, thank you for the explanation"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel smiles, "That's why I assigned you to Beta Shift, when I have the bridge. You don't have to be intimidated by the Admiral."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"I appreciate that Commander"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel pauses as they reach a door. She taps on the panel beside it and it slides open, "These'll be your quarters for your stay here. It's a typical dorm for enlisted and cadets. It -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - should have everything you need. Nearest mess hall is a deck above you. I'll send you the decks and officers you two'll be reporting to tomorrow morning," she nods to Mariel and T'Mer
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel nods to Kayleigh, "And I'll see you on the bridge tomorrow at 1200 hours."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Until then Commander" she offers in parting
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Commander Sh'raovel turns and heads off
—
Human NPC@annpc#557 | The next morning, Mariel and T'Mer head to the mess hall above them to meet with the security officers they'll be working with. Kayleigh still has a few hours off, with her shift on the bridge -
Human NPC@annpc#557 - beginning later. They arrive to find two security officers waiting for them near the mess hall entrance, a young woman with Ensign pips and a man who seems a few years older than her, sporting -
Human NPC@annpc#557 - LTJG pips. The LTJG approaches T'Mer, "Cadet T'Mer, I assume."
T’Mer@crystyl nods, "That's me. I've been told it can be inappropriate to respond to such introductions with comments about any other Iconians in cadet uniforms"
Human NPC@annpc#557 | The man chuckles, "Yeah, it's hard to mistake you for anyone else." He offers her a hand to shake. "I'm Lieutenant Sinclair. I'll be working with you over the next two days."
Human NPC@annpc#557 | Lieutenant Sinclair is certainly on the tall side for a human, though not quite as tall as the Iconian cadet
T’Mer@crystyl shakes the hand, "I am looking forward to it"
Human NPC@annpc#557 | Sinclair: "Come with me," He turns and starts walking down the hall. "So I'm told you used to work with Coalition Security?"
T’Mer@crystyl:"Yes, like many of the first generation I was inferior to the expected standards. With my inquisitive nature I was allocated to monitor security at one of the new promenades"
Human NPC@annpc#557 | Sinclair: "How'd you end up with Starfleet?"
T’Mer@crystyl:"One of my investigations led to inadvertent partnering with Cadets Tanglao and Kayleigh. Afterwards my superiors there determined that the environment around Starfleet training schools might be a -
T’Mer@crystyl:- better fit for me and so I was transferred to the academy"
Human NPC@annpc#557 | SInclair nods, "Wasn't making much progress with your career at the Promenade, I'm guessing?"
T’Mer@crystyl:"Oh no, as a bad batch a promising career was never something deemed achievable and so never aspired to. It was just that I kept getting in trouble for being too inquisitive and they said I couldn't-
T’Mer@crystyl:- work within that regimented structure! After seeing how the other cadets seemed to share that nature with me, and the impression that Starfleet was less refined, that was what prompted the -
T’Mer@crystyl:- decision!" she chirps proudly, despite actually somehow saying that she basically got kicked out for being useless, and donated to Starfleet because they're just as bad...
Human NPC@annpc#557 | Sinclair: "Less refined, huh...well, I won't deny that we're a curious bunch. We've still got our rules and regulations though."
T’Mer@crystyl:"Oh, um... I said something wrong again didn't I? What I mean is, Starfleet is seen as more... well rounded, because it is so multi cultural. I think..." she looks to Mariel for help
Human NPC@annpc#557 | Mariel giggles, "Yes, that's a better explanation!".
Human NPC@annpc#557 | Sinclair nods, "Have you received your weapons training with Starfleet Security yet?"
T’Mer@crystyl shakes her head, "No, not yet. I am still on the basics of protocol and structure. But I did weapons training previously if that is required here"
Human NPC@annpc#557 | Sinclair: "On duty security personnel carry weapons in most situations. Typically a basic phaser pistol for standard duty. We only take out the rifles if we're expecting trouble or for -
Human NPC@annpc#557 - certain ceremonial occasions. Did you train with pistols previously, or was it those Iconian spear-things your Heralds use?"
T’Mer@crystyl:"I am quite proficient with staves, yes. But they were found early on to be quite unsettling to the civilian population on the promenade for some reason, and so we switched to more discrete hand -
T’Mer@crystyl:- weapons like your phasers"
Human NPC@annpc#557 | Mariel: "Well they do look pretty intimidating. Long and sharp and all..."
T’Mer@crystyl:"Surely though that should just inspire a feeling of security, seeing how intimidating those protecting the area look"
Human NPC@annpc#557 | Sinclair chuckles, "Maybe for a military base, but intimidation isn't exactly something people are looking for in a shopping promenade. Even if it's the good guys who are intimidating."
T’Mer@crystyl:"I still don't get it. But, it all seems to be working out so I won't complain!"
Human NPC@annpc#557 | Sinclair leads them to a sealed door where he taps the panel. It slides open to one of the Courageous' armouries
Human NPC@annpc#557 | Sinclair: "We've actually got some of your Iconian weapons on board, but let's just go with a standard phaser pistol for now. You probably won't need to use it. Well hopefully not, anyways."
Human NPC@annpc#557 | Sinclair opens a rack of phaser pistols, retrieving one for each of them
T’Mer@crystyl:"Have there been any disturbances since the infiltrators left?"
Human NPC@annpc#557 | Sinclair: "Nothing serious. Certainly nothing that involved shooting, thankfully. There was some paranoia, a few suspicions here and there about people being infiltrators. Some were obviously -
Human NPC@annpc#557 - just tensions being high, others we looked into but didn't find anything."
T’Mer@crystyl:"I see. So the possibility of infiltrators remaining among the crew is still a serious consideration then"
Human NPC@annpc#557 | Sinclair: "Well, people are on edge after what happened. It's still a possibility, sure, but we're pretty confident all the infiltrators were whisked away onto that ship with the former -
Human NPC@annpc#557 - captain. We've done lots of investigating and both Romulans and your old friends in Coalition Security have been through the ship and not found anyone else yet either. Right now, things -
Human NPC@annpc#557 - are more about trying to figure out what the infiltrators were up to." He glances to Mariel. "We're hoping you might see something that'll help us ID other infiltrators too, but we don't have -
Human NPC@annpc#557 - reason to believe there's any here right now. Could very well be more in other crews, though."
—
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | After her first day of duty on the bridge, which goes by smoothly, Kayleigh returns to their quarters. Mariel and T'Mer are already settled in the common area, having taken the earlier shift
Kayleigh@crystyl strolls in with a cursory "ladies" in greeting, making for a welcome sit down to rest her feet
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles, "Welcome back, Kay! How's your first day on bridge duty? Is this your first day on bridge duty, or have you done it before?"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"I have not worked any duty shift before this, nor had I ever anticipated doing so for at least another year or two. Even in scenarios I had considered which might call me to a duty shift -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- prematurely it was never to cover the bridge tactical station. It seems I miscalculated"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris chuckles, "I guess you also didn't anticipate having friends like me and the first Iconian cadet in Starfleet. We're bound to get some more unusual assignments!"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Yes, it is... difficult to argue the point everybody out here makes of how such experiences are beneficial to frontier cadets"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"So how'd your first day go? It was mostly just learning your way around things, right? I can't imagine there's much for tactical to do at the moment when we're inside the Sphere, and we haven't -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- fought another one of those ships that I know of."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Whilst that is true, the lingering emotional unrest surrounding this ship and it's crew... well it is difficult to explain, but if I had to give an analogy I would say it is like everyone is at -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- yellow alert. It seems much more tangible on the bridge as well, perhaps because it is largely populated by junior officers stepping into new roles with the knowledge of what recently happened -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- with their predecessors. I would have previously anticipated a first duty shift to be shadowing a duty officer who taught the intricacies of the role as performed at that specific posting. However-
Kayleigh@crystyl:- this was more of a case of being pointed at the station and given a list of unneccessarily in depth system checks and analyses to perform"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Oh, yeah, that sounds like being thrown into the deep end all right... The checks weren't too difficult for you, were they?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I'm no ship expert, but I know the Courageous has more advanced tactical systems than most, which is why it was placed in charge of Sphere defense..."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"I will not pretend that I was able to take everything in my stride. At the academy they talk about learning curves, and reference steep curves for such occassions. At times it felt more like a -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- vertical line than a curve, but the Commander was sympathetic to the position she put me in, and provided sufficient support where needed. All in all, I would consider it a successful first shift"-
Kayleigh@crystyl:- she looks between the others, "How have you both been faring so far?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"It's been less of a steep learning curve for us, largely thanks to being paired with officers. T'Mer and Lieutenant Sinclair went to one of the security monitoring stations after we got our -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- phasers, and Ensign Riar and I went on patrol. T'Mer and Sinclair joined us in the second half of the shift."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"That makes sense, our primary purpose here afterall is for you to patrol the ship in the hopes of triggering a vision"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "I got a few. Some of them were /definitely/ not relevant, but a few, well, I'm not sure if they're important or not. We noted them down for the Commander to analyze. And Riar told me a -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - lot about how Security works and their role on the ship."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Then it sounds like a fruitful start on all fronts. That is gratifying to hear"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I'm onto the bridge with you tomorrow. Any tips for me there?"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"hmm... are you taking a duty station as I did today, or shadowing a duty officer?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "The Commander said I'll be taking the science station, like you're doing with tactical."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Then the best I can suggest based on my experience today is to not question any extraordinary degree of responsibility given to you, and utilize the Commander as your primary point of contact for -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- any queries or guidance seeking that may come up"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Got it. So they're basically just treating us as full officers up there, then?"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"There is no unreasonable expectation placed upon us; the rest of the duty officers were fully conscious of the fact that I am just a cadet, and lacking knowledge on a number of fronts. But in -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- essence, yes - our roles are filling the gaps of missing duty staff, not shadowing staff on duty. The other officers on shift were most helpful still, but the reason I suggest leaning on the -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- Commander first is because of everyone elses relative inexperience and associated insecurity. By using the Commander that way, it seems to alleviate the stress and tension everyone else is placing-
Kayleigh@crystyl:- themselves under as they are all in a similar position to us up there, just to a less extreme degree you might say"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles, "A logical suggestion as always Kay! We'll be on the same shift tomorrow too, though I don't expect you'd know much about the science station..."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Well, your father's a Chief Science Officer, but don't worry! You should focus on your own stuff first!"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Unfortunately not, so I will be of little assistance to you there. However if you face any uncertainty on protocol or bridge operations then I may be able to advise you based on my experiences today
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Thanks. I've done some holodeck training, but I've never been on a real bridge before."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"If you believe it may help, I am content to start the shift early again as I did today so that you can have an extended handover with the prior duty officer"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Oh, that's a good call! I woke for Alpha shift today so I'll probably be up a bit earlier tomorrow, anyways."
Kayleigh@crystyl nods, "Then I shall do so again tomorrow as well"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Some excellent suggestions, Kay! You came straight here after your shift, right? Haven't grabbed any food yet?"
Kayleigh@crystyl shakes her head, "No, I decided it would be most prudent to first check on the two of you following your initial experiences here"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris stands, "Come on, let's go up to the mess for some dinner, then!"
Kayleigh@crystyl hrms hesitantly as she stands
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris notices the hm, "Don't worry, it's not too late, you'll still have time to study when we get back if you want to make sure you're caught up on course work!"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Hm? Oh don't worry, that is of no concern while we are here. I was sufficiently read up on our current workload that I can afford to let it go. No it's just... well, I don't know yet what the -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- optimal seating position there"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris laughs, "/That's/ what you're worried about? I'm sure we'll find something suitable for you!"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris leads the way out
Kayleigh@crystyl:"You mentioned already having some visions, yes?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "Yeah, a few. Mostly moments from the fighting that happened or other interactions between random crew so far, though."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Good" she notes as they head out, "Then we can use that to blackmail anyone who happens to already be in my seat once I determine which that is" and carries on, deadpan as ever even if it did just -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- sound like she was being funny...
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris doubletakes at that, pausing for a moment before quickly catching up, "That's...a joke...right?"
—
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The next day, Kayleigh and Mariel report to the bridge a little earlier. They settle into their respective stations and are soon given their duties
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Things go smoothly as the two cadets work away, and the first half of the shift passes with nothing of note except a brief vision Mariel has of the mutiny, which is unfortunately of little use -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - as Commander Sh'raovel was present at these events herself
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris doesn't have any more visions as she focuses on the duties she has to perform. As they work however, the Ensign on comms standing right behind the command area seems to suddenly get busier with -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - something
Kayleigh@crystyl observes curiously for the moment
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris quickly notices and turns to observe as well. The Ensign doesn't comment though, focusing on his work and tapping away rapidly
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | About two minutes later, the lift door slides open. A dark-skinned man with greying hair and beard steps out, dressed in a flag officer's uniform with the pips of a Vice Admiral
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Comm Ensign: "Admiral on deck!"
Kayleigh@crystyl stands at attention
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Commander Sh'raovel rises from her seat as well, turning to the Admiral
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The admiral meanwhile makes his way towards the Commander at the centre of the bridge, "At ease, everyone."
Kayleigh@crystyl relaxes and resumes her duties
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The Admiral makes his way to the helm console, passing the pilot an isolinear chip, "Take us to these coordinates." He promptly turns towards the command chair, sitting down. Sh'raovel takes a -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - seat beside him in the XO's usual spot
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Tactical. Yellow alert."
Kayleigh@crystyl quickly acts and initiates the alert, a moment later confirming, "Yellow alert acknowledged"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel glances back at Kayleigh, "Thank you, Cadet." She turns to the Admiral. "What's going on, Admiral?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali passes her a PADD, "The Orions have detected a spatial anomaly at these coordinates."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel scrolls through the PADD, "These coordinates, they're /inside/ the Heart."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali nods, "Exactly."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | On the viewscreen, the Courageous begins maneuvering through the Spherescape
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | As they travel, they see two Nuhar Constructs ahead of them, moving in the same direction. Soon, a squadron of Klingon birds-of-prey can be seen assembling into formation around a large -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - battlecruiser, which joins the group
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Before long, they arrive at the anomaly- a large mass of blue looming by one of the Sphere facilities. Though the anomaly is sizable, the view of much of it is blocked out by the sizable -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - Coalition fleet gathered around it. From the viewscreen, Kayleigh can make out representatives from almost every major Coalition faction. The most prominent are the massive Nuhar Defenders, -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - and Iconian and Lodzki Dreadnoughts, arrayed at the front of the fleet
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Analysis."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris glances over to see if the Admiral is asking her, and the Commander gives a nod
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris turns back to her console and quickly taps away, "It's an...anomaly, that's for sure. There's elevated tachyon levels, looks like some kind of subspace rift."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris adds after a moment, "No wait, it's not just subspace particles. There's temporal radiation too. It's a rift in space-time itself, I think."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Any indications where it might have come from, or where it leads to?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris taps her console again, "Nothing I can tell..."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The Admiral nods, "Tactical, check in with the fleet. Find us a place in the formation."
Kayleigh@crystyl nods, "Aye Admiral" and sets about coordinating with the rest of the fleet
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kayleigh is directed towards one of the Lodzki dreadnoughts, which is managing the defensive formation. After a moment, she is informed of the spot in the formation that the Courageous is to take
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Formation alignment received. Sending to the helm now"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Pilot: "Received. Moving us into position."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The Courageous continues forward, turning to the side to move to their alloted spot in the formation
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Thoughts, everyone? Feel free to speak up as well, Cadets. You're bridge personnel too."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"From what I understand of the current threat against Starfleet here, these mystery ships which keep appearing are a temporal faction of some description are they not? It therefore may be possible -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- that this is a direct assault and a heightened alert status may then be advisable"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The Admiral nods, "That's what I'm afraid of. From what it took to subdue the last vessel, and that was a single ship, I don't know if the entire military might of the Coalition will be able -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - to withstand a direct assault. But it's always better to be prepared. Take us to red alert."
Kayleigh@crystyl nods, "Red alert, aye" promptly raising the status
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Access all available intel on the last two vessels in the meantime. Combat data, Coalition studies of the debris, anything you can pull up. Work out an optimal firing pattern and -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - target locations if more of these ships come through."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Y- yes Admiral" she quickly starts tapping away, clearly feeling the pressure of the prospect of her 2nd ever bridge shift being a modern day Wolf 359
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Science- anything changed about the rift since the Orions detected it?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris shakes her head, "None at all, Admiral."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Patch in to the rest of the fleet. See if they have any insights to offer
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "Yes Admiral." She quickly does just that
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris speaks again after a minute, "All the other ships concur that it's a stable rift in space-time. No one knows where it leads. Scans from the Sphere indicate there wasn't a ship here when it -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - appeared or any other unusual readings. It just...started to form, so it probably wasn't opened from our side."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Keep monitoring. Let me know the moment something changes. I'll be in the ready room. Comms, patch me through to the other fleet leaders."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Comm Ensign: "Aye Admiral."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali stands, heading for the ready room, "The bridge is yours, Commander."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris glances at the Admiral as he heads off, then at Kayleigh to see how she's doing
Kayleigh@crystyl fails to notice the glance, still working away to try and figure out her personal kobayashi maru before weapons start firing at them
—
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | After a few minutes of studying what information the Coalition has on the future ships, Kayleigh finds no obvious weaknesses to exploit. As with usual Starfleet designs, the nacelle and pylons -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - are probably the weakest points, but with their Iconian alloy, Borg regenerating hulls and immensely powerful shielding, any hits from the Courageous will be little more than a beesting to -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - them. The only hope of bringing down one of these ships from what she can see is through destruction by a thousand cuts, as was the case with the one the Coalition brought down recently. No -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - amount of tactical prowess will do anything to close the drastic technological gap
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | As Kayleigh works to no avail, Commander Sh'raovel stands from her seat and walks over to the tactical console, "Cadet. How're you doing?"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Unfortunately Commander, I have not been able to discern any effective strategy to be used against any volume of these ships. The most indicative data we have is from the recent combat here, and -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- there is no viable scenario where we can reproduce those results with the firepower available. If this is just one ship coming through, there is a more reasonable chance of success. However the -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- likelihood of such an event seems rather more insignificant"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel nods, "Not after what happened the last time they sent a single ship in after us. They'll probably be sending a good several, if not an entire fleet."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"That is the most plausible explanation for this anomaly appearing here. Which is one I am unable to determine a decisive strategy for. I apologize for my ineptitude in this Commander"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "You don't need to apologize, Cadet. It's not incompetence on your end, every other ship out there is coming to the same conclusion," she gestures to the viewscreen. "We're simply -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - outmatched by these enemies. It's the tools we have at our disposal that's insufficient, not you."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"You are right, of course" she resigns, "Regardless, I will do all I can to optimize our performance in any engagement"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "I know you will. How are you doing, in here?" She asks, tapping her forehead. "I know we were already throwing you out into the blizzard, asking you to take on full bridge duty. -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - And now you have to calculate an optimal approach to what might just be an unwinnable battle."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"I am focused on performing my duties to the best of my abilities in the circumstances Commander" she glances to Mariel, "However, others here are thrown into an even heavier blizzard and without a -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- Vulcan's mental discipline"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "You think I should check on her instead of you?"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"I believe it would be the logical thing to do; though it is only one day, I am already more familiar and comfortable here in general. And taking into account the aforementioned differences in our -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- mental training, it would seem... well... it would put my mind at ease as well I suppose..."
Kayleigh@crystyl | In other words, she's just worried about her friend. In her own Vulcan-ish way
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "You're sure you're not overworked here, Cadet?"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"No more than anyone else on duty Commander. Once this is all over, then I will reflect on the heightened emotions of these events"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "I'll check on your friend, then. Good luck, Cadet."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel turns to Mariel, but before she reaches the science station...
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"There's an energy spike coming from the rift!"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel pauses, immediately looking to the comms station, "Inform the Admiral."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The Comms Ensign nods, promptly doing so as Commander Sh'raovel rushes back to the centre. Blue energy pulses outwards from the aperture of the anomaly…
—
Kayleigh@crystyl looks over, "Red alert, Commander?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel nods, "Red alert." She takes the XO's seat and the ready room door slides open a few seconds later with the Admiral striding out
Kayleigh@crystyl sets the red alert as the Admiral enters
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Status?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Something's emerging from the rift."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | A tiny speck appears from the centre of the rift on the viewscreen
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Tactical analysis."
Kayleigh@crystyl squints at the viewscreen quickly before getting to work
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Looks like a warp capable probe" she perks a brow, intrigued by her own findings, "No indications of armaments, only a basic cutting beam is detected and there is no shielding beyond a standard -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- probe deflector system"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "A probe..." He glances back. "Engineering, what do you think?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The Lieutenant on Engineering answers, "The technology looks similar to our own. I see a bit of Borg influence...its core is bigger than our probes so it probably has more sophisticated -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - programming. But it's no more advanced than probes we field in most regards."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"It's starting to scan the fleet, sir."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Magnify."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The viewscreen magnifies in on the probe. It is a long device, shaped almost exactly like a Borg Probe, only much smaller, about the size of a work bee. Its hull is covered in shiny chrome -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - plating, and a white light emanates from the front as it scans around
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"The probe has a quantum signature that's different from our universe's...but it also doesn't match the signature on the infiltrator ships."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "A third quantum signature? Any thoughts on what that could mean?"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"If the faction we have been fighting here came from another quantum reality, it is reasonable to surmise that they also went to others as well. Perhaps they interfered with one sharing their -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- technology level who are now hunting them"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "It's possible, but the tech level of this probe would suggest whoever made this rift is closer to us than them."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Unless they're sending very outdated probes, or we've already reached the epitome of probe technology, and there's nothing more advanced we can get from here."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"A fair point" she concurs, "So probably not hunting them. Perhaps fleeing, or seeking multiverse allies against the same threat?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "That's more likely. The ship we fought had some hull plating giving off the quantum signature of our universe, didn't it?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Engineering LT: "That's right, Admiral."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Perhaps they've tracked the infiltrators down to our universe, and believe us to be connected to them in some way. Which would not be entirely mistaken, given how deep this -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - infiltration runs..."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"A most logical conclusion"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Comms Ensign: "The fleet is debating whether to leave the probe be, destroy it or attempt to capture it."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Do we all think there's a greater chance whoever sent the probe is working against the infiltrators rather than for them?"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Based on the speculative nature of the details we are working with, there is a 68.4% chance that they are against the infiltrators. Approximately"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Further to that; since we lack the capacity to effectively close this rift, we are at the whim of whoever is on the other side. Therefore I do not believe it would be advisable to take hostile -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- action regardless of their affiliation"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods in agreement, along with the Engineer and Comms officer
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Tell the fleet Starfleet advises against disturbing the probe."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Comms Ensign: "Yes sir." He relays the message on his console
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The probe continues to scan away on the viewscreen. A few seconds later, the Ensign speaks again, "The Coalition has agreed to let the probe continue its work for the time being."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Good." He takes a seat in the command chair. "Let's wait and see what happens next. Keep analyzing the probe and the rift."
Kayleigh@crystyl continues her own scans
Kayleigh@crystyl:"From what I can tell, the probe is most comparable to our own in construction. That is to say that the alloys present - whilst still different - bare an... unlikely resemblence to Starfleet -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- construction standards"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "So you think this could be the Starfleet of another parallel reality that made this rift?"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"At the very least; I would surmise that the probe originated with the Starfleet of that universe. Given the degree of modification beyond our known standards - inclusion of Borg technology and -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- such - it is just as likely that someone else has repurposed that technology"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Engineering LT: "The probe doesn't look assimilated, but seeing where we are, this could've been sent by an alternate universe's version of the Horde..."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Or of the Coalition perhaps? We do have our share of allied Borg after all. So given the already apparent advanced technology, it is not inconceivable"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "It doesn't seem like the Horde to send a probe through, though. I wasn't here for most of the war, but from what I've heard, they're usually a bit more aggressive. The Coalition -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - sounds more likely to me. The Horde would probably just send in some ships without much of a care for what happens to them. They've got plenty to spare."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"That is very true from what I have learned of them. Hmm... what about sending a probe of our own?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Good idea, Cadet. Comms, patch me into the other fleet leaders."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The Comms Ensign nods and begins tapping
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"The probe's heading back towards the rift now."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Belay that order for now. Let's see if anything happens first."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The magnified view follows the probe as it turns around, soon disappearing through the dark spot in the middle of the rift
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The bridge crew watch quietly for a minute. Nothing further happens
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Any change in the rift?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Negative, sir."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Comm, patch me in now."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The faces of various fleet leaders appear on the viewscreen. Most of them are familiar faces, including Supreme Commander Vora, Guardian-Commander Issandros, former Emperor Mihal of the -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - Lodzki, Romulan Commander Nadel, to name a few. Others include an unfamiliar KDF representative, with Martok having returned to Klingon space, and a Regulator Supervisor with an -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - active helmet who could be anyone. Admiral Ali converses with them for a good few minutes before the comm ends. The consensus seems to be that a Starfleet probe should be used as they sent -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - something similar, and it would be the least surprising for them to see
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Engineering, prepare a Class Eight probe to launch through the rift."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The Engineering LT nods, "On it, Admiral."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | A few minutes later, the LT announces, "Probe is ready and loaded into a launch bay."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali looks to Kayleigh, "Fire away, Cadet."
Kayleigh@crystyl nods, "Launching now" and does so
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The probe appears on the viewscreen, speeding towards the rift, the screen magnifying with it as it travels. Like the probe that came through, it also disappears through the dark spot in the -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - centre of the rift
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"We're getting data from the other side. There's some massive energy readings that's interfering with the probe's ability to scan. I...don't think they're trying to blind us though. Looks like the -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- energy is feeding into the rift, it's what's sustaining it."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris shakes her head after a few seconds of typing, "I can't clear it up. The energy readings could be useful for studying the rift, but I can't get data on the other side..."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "We'll do this the old fashioned way, then. Put the probe's visual feed on the viewscreen."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Oh right! We can do that. Right away, sir."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The viewscreen shifts, but is still displaying the interior of a Spherescape. Several Sphere facilities hover in front of them, feeding lines of bright blue energy into the rift. The -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - energy seems to be channeled from the star at the heart of the Sphere itself, as it passes through the facility, all converging deep within the Sphere. The shapes of several ships can be -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - seen, many of them familiar. There is a Nuhar Watcher, an Iconian cruiser, a Borg Sphere and a Regulator vessel
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "You might be right, Cadet. This is looking like another universe's Coalition."
Kayleigh@crystyl perks a brow at the sight, "That seems increasingly likely"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"One thing I do not see there though..."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Starfleet?"
Kayleigh@crystyl looks over and nods, "Precisely. All the relatively familiar sights there, yet none appear congruent with the probe that came through"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Just as they muse over this, a vessel with the profile of a Starfleet ship moves into the probe's field of vision. It moves past the other ship, drawing closer and closer to the probe...
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Just as they muse over this, a vessel with the profile of a Starfleet ship moves into the probe's field of vision. It moves past the other ship, drawing closer and closer to the probe..
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Engineering LT: "That certainly looks like a Starfleet ship..."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Moreso than the others at least. It is difficult to make out, but it is not like any class I am familiar with from what we can see"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The Engineer shakes his head too, "I don't recognize the class, either."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "Looks kind of like a blend between a Constitution and an Ambassador class, from this angle. Like a much larger and wider Constitution..."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"It is certainly difficult to accurately gauge the scale, but it does seem to carry that traditional Starfleet cruiser design philosophy"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Several other ships begin moving, but they are largely beneath the probe's field of view. The bridge crew get only brief glimpses at them as they fly about
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Looks like there's a hollow section out in the middle. That's not usual for Starfleet design..."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Not in modern design. There are older vessels which used such elements."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The Starfleet-looking cruiser draws closer and closer to the probe, seemingly about to pass right under it
Kayleigh@crystyl:"And to a degree newer ones. If you count the neck of an Odyssey at least. It always struck me as a very inefficient design philosophy though, but I am no engineer"
Kayleigh@crystyl taps quickly, trying to gleam as much as she can from the closer view
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kayleigh can make out what appears to be the name and registry as the ship comes quite close. The numbers are Federation standard, though they're not followed by any NCC. The name, however, is -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - very different
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris FX | https://i.imgur.com/MJRa9M1.jpg
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Fascinating. The script is not familiar to me, but according to this it reads 'Shenzhou'"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Comm Ensign: "I recognize the script. It's an Earth language. Originating from the eastern region of the continent of Asia and used by several cultures there, I believe. It's not very common -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - outside Earth and a select few human colonies."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"That would certainly explain my unfamiliarity with it. Thank you for the exposition"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "I've seen it before too. It's used on some signage in the part of Earth I come from. Usually traditional restaurants and the like. The script is usually used with languages from the -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - the regions of Japan and China. Never thought I'd see it embrazened on a starship..."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Perhaps these cultures are more prominent in this timeline, or even the dominant ones, having conquered and suppressed all others at some point in history."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"These Human cultures are conquerors?" she notes, more registering the fact along with the movement of the vessel before quickly rechecking her stations readiness
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Most human cultures were conquerers at one point or another. It doesn't necessarily mean they still are today."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "But I still advise caution. Just because they use designs and technology similar to us doesn't mean they're benign. The Terrans of the Mirror Universe do too, and they're anything -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - except friendly."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The probe shakes slightly, and then begins moving backwards
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris turns back to her console and taps on it, "I think they've got the probe in a tractor beam."
Kayleigh@crystyl tilts her head as the sudden shift in angle, like a kid playing a racing game and subconsciously leaning into every turn
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The probe is dragged along with the ship. The blue glow of the rift soon envelops it...
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"The rift aperture is expanding!"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Tactical status?"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"All systems are primed and ready. I'm doing what little I can to refine our setup based on visual observations"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Excellent. Don't lock weapons on them unless they threaten us. We don't want to appear aggressive, but be ready in case they are."
Kayleigh@crystyl nods, "Understood"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "And get the fore view back on screen, since the probe isn't showing us much right now."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Comms Ensign: "Yes sir."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Once again, the viewscreen shifts to the view from the Courageous, showing the rift with a now far wider aperture. The ship seen through the probe earlier begins to emerge, with -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - three other vessels alongside it in formation. As all four vessels appear fully in formation, the blue energy around the rift seem to be sucked back into the aperture. The rift rapidly -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - collapses in on itself, disappearing with a final flash of light, leaving only the ships that emerged...

Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The four vessels that emerged from the rift loom on the viewscreen...
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris FX | https://i.imgur.com/YIcNdIA.jpg
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Tactical analysis?"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"For the sake of expediency, and without a detailed assessment; to put things in relatable terms, we are looking at an Odyssey escorted by a Luna and two Mirandas. All appear more heavily armed on -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- average than the likened equivalents, however with the fleet gathered here they pose no significant threat from what I can see. I will continue to assess in detail and look for anything suspicious"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Thank you, Cadet. Speak up if you find anything."
Kayleigh@crystyl nods, "I will do so Admiral"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Sir, all four ships have the same quantum signature as the probe that came through."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Then it all but confirms that the probe was theirs."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Comms Ensign: "The Shenzhou is putting out a general hail."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Onscreen."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The viewscreen changes to show...
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris FX | https://i.imgur.com/5he1DZu.jpg
Kayleigh@crystyl perks a brow at seeing a fellow Vulcan, and what seems to be a liberated borg one at that from what she can tell
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The Vulcan speaks in what appears to be an alien language to Kayleigh
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Comms Ensign: "Universal translator is deciphering. It shouldn't be long. The language has common elements with multiple Earth languages from the continent of Asia." He glances at his console, -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - "And influences from Andorian, Vulcan and Tellarite languages. Their version of Federation standard, I expect."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Stands to reason. Replay the message again with the translation."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The message rewinds and plays again, this time in our Federation standard...
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Cyborg Vulcan: "This is Captain Se’Lai of the Interplanetary Federation starship Shenzhou, attempting to contact the Federation of this universe. I assume you want your probes back?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Patch us in to reply," He stands as the comms ensign does that, taking a step towards the screen
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "I'm Vice Admiral Selam Ali of the Deep Space Exploratory Corps. Yes, we would like our probe back."
Kayleigh@crystyl naturally recognizes the name and pulls up our keelah's files to start running comparisons while her data compiles on the analysis of the new ships
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "Apologies for pulling it out of there before you were done with your survey. We couldn't maintain the rift for much longer, and I imagine you wouldn't want it to be trapped on our -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - side. We've released our tractor hold so you can call it back. My engineers are reprogramming the other one to make its way back towards your fleet as well."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The Admiral exchanges a puzzled look with Commander Sh'raovel before turning back to the viewscreen, "The...other one?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "The one you sent through to contact me. That was you, wasn't it? Your ships have the same quantum signature."
Kayleigh@crystyl looks over to the comms ensign in confusion, as she only sent one probe out
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The ensign likewise looks over to Kayleigh, "You only launched one...right Cadet?"
Kayleigh@crystyl nods, "Yes, the one we monitored the feed from as it was tractored back. I take it you did not send out a seperate comms probe previously?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Comms Ensign: "No, of course not. I'm checking with the other ships of the fleet to see if they did..."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "When did you receive the other probe?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "A few weeks ago. We've been working on a way to come through since then, and brought it along with us."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "Could this be the work of the infiltrators?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Alt Keelah narrows her eyes, which on closer examination appears cybernetic in nature, the blue hue being slightly different from that of the Keelah in our universe and with mechanical -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - components clearly visible in the iris, "Infiltrators?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "We've been dealing with a situation involving infiltrators from a different quantum reality, but one that possesses a distinct quantum signature from yours. We're considering the -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - possibility that one of them may have sent that probe."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "Is my counterpart in your reality affiliated with these infiltrators?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "No...why? Are you?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "No, we don't have an infiltrator situation in our reality. But your probe was trying to contact me specifically."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "You specifically? Not your ship, or your Starfleet?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "That's right."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Our Captain Se'Lai is missing in action, along with her ship and several others..."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris looks to Kayleigh, "Kay! The Tellarite Captain and Professor Lycas, that day when we set out on the expedition into the underground biome. Weren't they arguing about something related to Captain -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - Se'Lai's disappearance and the fabric of reality?"
Kayleigh@crystyl nods, "Yes, that Captain was attempting to recruit the Professor as an advisor for an experiment that sounded like some repurposing of Iconian technology in an attempt to track the Valley Forge"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Captain Pall was his name. Of the USS Midway."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Yes, that's the one. Let me check on the reports submitted from the Midway in the last few weeks, see if it says anything" she starts working
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "One moment. We need to check something," He walks over to Kayleigh's console, "What do you have, Cadet?"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"A possible answer to the question of the first probe. At least i had hoped so, but the relevant aar's are classified. I have isolated the reports though if you want to have someone else review them"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "It's alright. I have an idea of the experiments they were conducting. They were classified because of how little we know of Iconian gateway technology and how dangerous they can -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - be in the wrong hands. I don't think a cadet, even a science-focused one, would be able to replicate these experiments." He reaches out a hand. "Allow me."
Kayleigh@crystyl steps aside allowing him to use the console
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali taps on the console for a second and the reports come up. He steps back, letting Kayleigh read through them
Kayleigh@crystyl quickly starts reviewing for relevant details
Kayleigh@crystyl:"As we suspected, it would seem that the Midway's experiment is most likely the source of the probe in question. They were indeed using Iconian gateways in some unorthodox format in an effort to -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- locate the Valley Forge. Multiple probes were despatched around the time in question, and programmed to broadcast upon detecting the ship within range. Given the loose criteria such a program -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- would have to work with, it is conceivable that it was activated upon detecting the ships which are here now" she peers over to Mariel, "You were correct in associating this with Captain Pall's -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- discussion with the Professor it would seem"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles happily, "Glad I could put my memory to use!"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali meanwhile heads back for the centre of the bridge, signalling for the comm ensign to unmute, "The other probe, is it identified as belonging to a USS Midway?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Alt Keelah nods, "So it is yours?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "I believe so. I apologize for the confusion. We did send out such a probe, but it was not for the purposes of contacting you or travelling into your reality. Your counterpart in -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - our universe disappeared through a malfunctioning Iconian gateway, you see. The probe was part of an experiment to find where she ended up, and establish contact if possible."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "That would explain it. You're not looking for me, you're looking for your version of me. Well, we're here anyways with a full expedition. We've never conducted an exploration into -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - a different quantum reality on purpose before. You don't mind if we stay for a little while? Perhaps our technology can help you locate your Captain Se'Lai."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali smiles, "Not at all. We're all explorers, aren't we?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Alt Keelah smiles back, "Yes, our probe indicated that you've formed a similar Coalition to ours here, and you didn't shoot it down, so we had good prospects for first contact."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "We'll lead you to our Coalition Headquarters here. You can transport an entourage over and we can discuss more."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "A logical plan, Admiral."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali nods to the helm, "Take us there, Ensign."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The comm ends and the pilot starts turning the Courageous about
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Comm Ensign: "Message from the Shenzhou again. They're telling us there's no need to worry, it's not a sneak attack. They're just decloaking their scout."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Indeed, right after the ensign announces this, Kayleigh's sensors detect a fifth ship decloaking amidst the alternate universe group
Kayleigh@crystyl:"New contact confirmed. A heavy escort, akin to a Defiant class. Possibly a relevant point of interest here on the topic; all of their ships appear to be equipped with cloaking technology. I have -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- also determined that the two cruisers possess nanotech ablative armour like that which we saw developed first with the Valley Forge here. The others appear to a more standard ablative shell"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "Their ships are more tactically orientated in general. They seem nice, but we should be careful. It might still be a ruse."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"We also can not rule out any infiltrator association"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Agreed. Advise the Coalition to scan for other cloaked vessels, but not around our new guests. We need to be thorough, but we also shouldn't give the impression that we're -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - suspicious of them. It's not a good start to our relations if they're genuine. And if they're not...we wouldn't want them to know we're onto them, either."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"nods, "I will begin coordinating with the fleet immediately"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "I'll be beaming down to greet them at Coalition HQ. You have the bridge again, Commander." He heads towards the turbolift
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "Be vigilant, Admiral."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Admiral Ali replies as he turns after stepping into the lift, "Don't worry, I will."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The lift doors close and Commander Sh'raovel turns to Kayleigh, "You're good to keep going with the tactical analysis?"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Yes Commander, of course"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel nods, "Sorry to put you two in the middle of a crisis like that. None of us thought this would happen on your shift."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Preparedness for unexpected eventualities is crutial to our training. I am certain this will prove a most beneficial experience to us"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel smiles, "Looking on the bright side, I see. You've been doing well so far. I'll be sure to let your professors know that you don't crack under pressure. Keep up the good work."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Thank you Commander, I shall endeavour to do so"
—
T'Lana@anncaris | Having just finished her duty shift, T'Mer is suddenly called to the transporter room...
T'Lana@anncaris | The Iconian cadet enters to find Admiral Ali inside with an Andorian security officer, not Sh'raovel but an Andorian male
Rianni@crystyl | T'Mer looks between the two, "Cadet T'Mer reporting as ordered"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "I know you just finished your assigned shift, Cadet. But I have another assignment for you, if you're willing to take it. It's not uncommon for Starfleet officers to have to -
T'Lana@anncaris - take extra shifts, especially once you get more senior roles among a crew."
Rianni@crystyl | T'Mer shakes her head, "It is no problem Admiral. If there is a duty I can perform, then I shall do so"
T'Lana@anncaris | The Admiral smiles, "Thank you, Cadet. You'll be more of an honour guard," He gestures to the Andorian, who retrieves an Iconian antiproton projector leaning against the wall, handing the -
T'Lana@anncaris - staff-like weapon to T'Mer. "I'm told you're familiar with your people's traditional weaponry?"
Rianni@crystyl | T'Mer nods, deftly bringing the staff to a ceremonial ready position standing it rigid to her side, "Yes Admiral, it is a required training for all rebirths"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Excellent. I'm heading down to Coalition Headquarters to welcome some new guests. Since you were formerly with Coalition Security, I thought you'd be the most qualified to -
T'Lana@anncaris - provide security there. And having the first Iconian Cadet along will help show some unity as well."
Rianni@crystyl | T'Mer: "understood Admiral. If I may; if you are welcoming guests elsewhere, then who are we greeting here?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali chuckles, "Oh we're just gathering here to beam over to Coalition HQ. Now that we're all here, come on," he gestures and walks onto the transporter pad
Rianni@crystyl | T'Mer watches a moment and then catches up, shuffling along to join them on the pad
T'Lana@anncaris | The Andorian officer steps onto the pad as well. The Admiral gives the command to energize, and the trio dematerialize, reappearing on a transporter pad inside Coalition HQ facing an Arshai -
T'Lana@anncaris - transporter operator
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali steps off the pad, "This is where we'll be welcoming the guests."
Rianni@crystyl | T'Mer follows, looking around, "Where do you want me?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Stand by the entrance- in sight, but not too intimidating, like we're about to take our guests to the brig or anything. Once we start moving, follow behind us."
Rianni@crystyl | T'Mer nods, "Understood" and takes position
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Keep an eye on them. Don't make it too clear that they're being watched. We want to make them feel welcome, but we can't be entirely certain of their motivations just yet. So be -
T'Lana@anncaris - prepared for anything."
Rianni@crystyl | T'Mer: "Just like keeping the peace on the promenade. It will not be a problem"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali smiles, "Good," He turns to the transporter pad, "Energize when ready."
T'Lana@anncaris | A few seconds later, the alternate universe Keelah materializes, with a very different looking blonde Rianni beside her, also sporting cybernetics, and an untattooed Mysti behind the pair
T'Lana@anncaris | Both Keelah and Rianni are wearing swords on their belts and seem to be in the same type of uniform with differing department colours. Mysti is dressed differently, however
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Welcome to Coalition Headquarters. Well, our version of it, that is."
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah steps off the pad, "Thank you for having us here, Admiral. This is Lieutenant Tierno, head of my Landing Forces, and Mysti of the Diplomatic Corps."
Rianni@crystyl steps down at Keelah's side, Mysti too
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "So you have a Coalition in your universe as well, judging from what we were able to tell through our probe?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah nods, "Right. I expect it wouldn't consist of the exact same factions and species, but I take it yours was founded as part of the efforts to fight the Horde?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali nods, "That was its inception, yes, but since then it has become something more."
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "As it has in our universe. It would seem that despite appearances, we have quite a bit in common."
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "It would seem so. These cybernetic implants- are they standard across your Starfleet?"
Rianni@crystyl eyes her omnitool, having not considered it such a curiosity before
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "There are several mandatory implants for Starfleet service. But most of us choose to customize ourselves further based on our particular disciplines and duties."
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Interesting. Is it exclusive to Starfleet?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah smiles, "No, it actually comes from Earth culture. It's common through Starfleet now, but there are Federation species who prefer to remain vanilla if they don't serve in Starfleet. -
T'Lana@anncaris - Like many of my species, the Vulcans."
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Interesting. Our Captain Se'Lai is closer to Earth culture than Vulcan's in many ways, too."
Rianni@crystyl looks between the two, "Is that so? Yet you say your people do not really embrace cybernetics. If that was not there for her to embrace from Earth culture, then what?"
Rianni@crystyl clearly can't imagine her captain without all the shiny bits...
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "We have some cybernetics. Usually to replace damaged organic components, or the ones we have here," he taps the back of his head. "To protect against the Horde and other psionic -
T'Lana@anncaris - intrusions. We just like to conceal them more and not have them be visible unless necessary."
Rianni@crystyl looks to Keelah, "You were not exaggerating when you said this place would take some getting used to..."
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah nods, "The humans here are so vanilla, I hardly recognize them as human..."
Rianni@crystyl:"It is a wonder they are even able to function on a galactic scale, but yet here they are occupying the Heart just like us"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Function on a galactic scale? You're not all mentally connected like the Borg, are you?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "No, no, that's the major difference between us and the Borg. That, and our implants are much more eye-catching," she smirks slightly
Rianni@crystyl squeaks at catching a disapproving look from Mysti and bows her head to Ali, "Apologies Admiral, I meant no disrespect. Please forgive my rudeness"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali chuckles, "No need for apologies. We're all curious to learn about one another here. Come with me, I'll take you to one of our meeting rooms. Some of the other Coalition leaders -
T'Lana@anncaris - should be joining us soon." He turns to lead the way out and Keelah follows along
Rianni@crystyl and Mysti follow behind Keelah
T'Lana@anncaris | The Andorian Security officer gives T'Mer a nod and moves out behind their guests
Rianni@crystyl | T'Mer follows along behind the others, noticing a glance from Rianni at her weapon
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali asks as they walk, "So, you're a part of your equivalent of the Deep Space Exploratory Corps too?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "Right. It's actually called the Deep Space Exploratory Corps as well."
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Is it also led by Fleet Admiral Enelya Torin?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "It is."
Rianni@crystyl:"The same people in the same positions, the odds seem incalculable-" she catches herself, looking to Keelah, "-And no Captain, that is not a challenge"
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah chuckles, "Not quite the same people. You're Admiral Torin's second-in-command here?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "I take it I'm not in your universe?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "No, you never pursued a career in Starfleet. I didn't recognize you until without your implants until you gave your name. You're second-in-command of the whole Federation where we -
T'Lana@anncaris - come from."
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali double-takes at that, "I'm Vice President?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "You are. Serving your second term alongside President Sugihara."
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Sugihara is a prominenant ambassador here. It wouldn't surprise me if he was elected President in our universe someday as well. Who's Enelya's deputy for you?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "Vice Admiral Kim Seung-il."
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "I'm not sure I recognize the name. Wait...Captain Kim of the Rhode Island?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "The family name fits, but Kim isn't exactly a rare family name. Not for our humans, at least."
Rianni@crystyl:"Speaking of names, I couldn't help but notice you seem to use an obscure form of basic here. Our translators couldn't quite tie it in at first, but it seems to stem from an outdated western -
Rianni@crystyl:- language on Earth, at least the written form"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "We had the same problem with your language. It stems from some eastern Earth languages, according to our translators."
Rianni@crystyl:"Well that would certainly seem to be a fundamental difference between our realities, it could explain a lot more too" she looks to Keelah, "Like how they called their Shenzhou the - what was it -
Rianni@crystyl:- again - Valley something?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Valley Forge. After a famous camp set up by George Washington during the American Revolution."
Rianni@crystyl:"So many strange names and references... this is going to take a lot of getting used to"
—
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali leads them into a meeting room, "Make yourselves at home. How different is Coalition HQ to yours, anyways?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah takes a seat, "Not very. We use a different Sphere structure as Headquarters, but it's the same Iconian-Nuhar style."
Lorri@crystyl takes a seat alongside the others, "Yes, it would seem that whatever the divergence point betweel realities was, the Iconian era predated it"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "What about the Vulcan-Romulan division? That happened as well, I take it?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah nods, "As the primarily differences seem to be in Earth culture, I think it's logical to presume the divergence point might have been somewhere in Earth history."
Lorri@crystyl smiles, "Logical as ever Captain, but yes I suspect the same as well"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali looks to Mysti, "What about your people? We have some Orions working in Starfleet and the Federation as a whole. Many of them on board our Captain Se'Lai's vessel, actually. But as -
T'Lana@anncaris - you might have noticed on your way through the Sphere, the Orions here are also divided between many other groups. There's an Orion Space Navy, a newer player trying to revive Orion culture -
T'Lana@anncaris - and civilization, but they're also found as part of the Colonial Fleet and the Klingon Defense Force."
Lorri@crystyl:"Oh my, so widespread here. Our people have been core members of the Federation for centuries now. Officially we joined with the Klingons as we were a part of their Empire back then. But truthfully -
Lorri@crystyl:- had no decisive hold over the Orion people even then, and since the Federation had first founded we had maintained a healthy alliance with them until formalizing our own membership. But now you -
Lorri@crystyl:- have made me curious; what happened to the Orion people here to have become so scattered in the first place, and to have talk of reviving cultures and such?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "You've had a rather complicated history. Do you still have that division between males and females of your species in your universe?"
Lorri@crystyl hrms, "Division might be a strong term for it, but historically yes; our males have often succumbed to foolish notions. However, nothing like this has occurred since we joined the Federation. -
Lorri@crystyl:- Some do actually say that the wider scope has allowed our people to find a more cohesive balance"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Well here, that separation has caused you a lot of trouble. The previous incarnation of an Orion society, if you can call it that, was something known as the Orion Syndicate. -
T'Lana@anncaris - Which was much more of a criminal organization than a government. That drove many Orions to make their life among other civilizations, like the New World and the Federation. A group of Orions -
T'Lana@anncaris - eventually founded the Orion Space Navy, which recently dismantled the Syndicate and is rebuilding your civilization."
Lorri@crystyl:"Oh my. Well it certainly does sound like your version of our recent history is much more akin to that we now consider our ancient past" she smiles, "Still, it is most gratifying to hear that story -
Lorri@crystyl:- end on a positive note. I am certain that the Orions of this reality will soon find their way"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali smiles, "Yes. things are turning around at the moment. They're a part of the Coalition now, it was actually one of their vessels that detected the rift you made when it appeared."
Lorri@crystyl:"Well I will certainly be very interested in learning more about them now we are here. but personal indulgences aside, we are - as previously mentioned by the good Captain - here as something of an -
Lorri@crystyl:- experimental first contact outreach. Though this is not the Federations first experience with alternate realities, we have never before encountered the possibility of established links through -
Lorri@crystyl:- stable rifts. It is new territory for all of us here, and as such we would like to establish some agreed ground rules with you regarding interactions" she chuckles, "As we have already seen here, -
Lorri@crystyl:- natural curiosity about counterparts and shared histories is rife and will only continue. Tell me Admiral, what are your thoughts regarding this moving forwards?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "It's not our first time making contact with other realities either, but previous encounters have always been incidental and far less...structured than this. I'm afraid we don't -
T'Lana@anncaris - have any rules or regulations on it. This is as new to us as it is to you. We have rules regarding time travel, but they don't much apply here. We're not affecting the past of either of our -
T'Lana@anncaris - universes, after all."
Lorri@crystyl smiles, "I am glad we are on the save wavelength. I believe as long as everyone is able to maintain perspective on the nature of ours being different realities, there is no harm in allowing these -
Lorri@crystyl:- interactions to continue. That said, it is something we are certainly mindful of and wish to monitor closely with our own people at least. Perspective is all fine, but learning of extreme life -
Lorri@crystyl:- differences, or worse potentially, could still have quite the emotional impact on people. But when it comes to general knowledge and technology I see no reason right now to treat this any -
Lorri@crystyl:- differently to a typical first contact"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali smiles back, "My thoughts exactly. For all intents and purposes, we are two different cultures making contact with one another right now."
Lorri@crystyl:"And we are doing so on your doorstep. as familiar a setting it may be to us, this is your home not ours. So we will do our best not to take liberties in making any assumptions here. Equally so, I -
Lorri@crystyl:- hope that our apparent similarity to your people will not invite any complacency and prevent people from suitably directing us while we are your guests here"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "I'm sure the different uniforms and cybernetics should be reminder enough. So-"
T'Lana@anncaris | The door slides open and Vora steps into the room, "Of course it's another Starfleet from a different universe showing up, isn't it? I suppose you're just as curious in both realities."
T'Lana@anncaris | Vora pauses upon spotting Mysti, narrowing her eyes, "So you're the Tabadi Mysti of that universe?"
Lorri@crystyl looks up, "It's Ambassador actually, we do not use Orion titles in the Federation. You seem familiar with me though, or at least the version of me from this reality. It is a pleasure to meet you"
T'Lana@anncaris | Vora takes a seat, "So you're an Ambassador?" She smiles. "Always was a good negotiator. Pleased to meet you too. I take it you aren't familiar with me?"
Lorri@crystyl shakes her head, "I am sorry, but no. You appear to be Arshai - or at least partly - so I take it you are affiliated with the Colonial Fleet here?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Vora: "Vora-Orion Dos Shaie'Foree Nos Zona, Supreme Commander of the Colonial Fleet."
Lorri@crystyl smiles, bowing her head, "Yep, definitely some Arshai in there. I am honoured that you have come to meet us, Supreme Commander"
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "The second part of your name is Orion? That's usually reserved for the tribe, isn't it? I assume the other part is Orion?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Vora smiles, "And you're still pretty observant."
Lorri@crystyl:"The Admiral told us a little about Orion history here. So you are of one of these Orion sub groups who settled with the Arshai I take it"
T'Lana@anncaris | Vora: "I'm the one who led the sub-group that settled with the Arshai. Your Orion history's different, then?"
Lorri@crystyl:"Yes, as I was just telling the Admiral before you arrived; we have been members of the Federation for centuries now, almost as long as the founding members. We officially joined when the Klingons -
Lorri@crystyl:- did, though we had well established ties at that point already"
T'Lana@anncaris | Vora: "The Klingons joined the Federation in your universe too?"
Lorri@crystyl:"Some time ago now, yes"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "How did that happen?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "It was a process that took a few decades. They started a war with us in the mid-23rd century. After they were defeated, their society fractured. Most of the surviving Great Houses -
T'Lana@anncaris - signed a treaty with us. Five of them didn't and were exiled. Those ones continued causing trouble for a while and almost caused a second war when they attempted to sabotage the Klingons' -
T'Lana@anncaris - entry. The event that prompted them to join was the destruction of their moon, which put Qo'noS in serious danger without Federation help."
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Very interesting. Both the Klingon War of the mid-23rd century and the Praxis explosion happened here as well. But the Federation didn't win that war, although we managed to -
T'Lana@anncaris - secure peace in the end. The destruction of Praxis resulted in an alliance with the Klingons, but not full integration into the Federation."
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah nods, "If the Klingons weren't fractured by the war, I suppose they would have had more power and the ability to assert their independence."
T'Lana@anncaris | Vora: "Next thing you'll be telling me the Romulans are part of your Federation, too."
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "Many of them are."
Lorri@crystyl nods, "There is still a fiercely independent faction born from remnants of the old Star Empire. But the bulk of what is generally recognized as the Romulan people are a much more recent addition"
T'Lana@anncaris | Vora: "How big /is/ your Federation?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "Not as big as this conversation is making it sound. We encompass many worlds through Quadrants One and Two, but we also lost many of our systems to the Borg, particularly in -
T'Lana@anncaris - Quadrant One."
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "You had extended conflict with the Borg, then?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah nods, "Multiple conflicts. And a not-insignificant amount of people and colonies who willingly joined them."
T'Lana@anncaris | Vora: "Willingly joined them? Are we talking about the same Borg here?"
T'Lana@anncaris | Alt Keelah: "Some people saw the Borg as a good prospect. Particularly human colonies."
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "I suppose the cybernetics would be a draw in your universe, wouldn't it?"
Lorri@crystyl:"That connection between biological and technological held a natural appeal for many, yes"
Lorri@crystyl | Rianni shrugs, "Yeah, but their aesthetic balance is all off. You've got to have at good balance of form and function"
T'Lana@anncaris | Vora chuckles, "Yes, the Borg aren't exactly much to look at, are they?"
Lorri@crystyl | Rianni nods, "That's putting it lightly. But still, the Ambassador is right. for many that did not matter and the draw of that deeper connection was a great temptation for them, so quite a few -
Lorri@crystyl:- Federation worlds signed up for assimilation early on"
T'Lana@anncaris | Vora: "And the Borg themselves are no easy fight either, even if you've got Klingons fighting for you."
Lorri@crystyl:"As a point of interest, I would be happy to provide you with a political map of Federation space as we know it. It may well prove interesting to compare notes, and perhaps even highlight other key -
Lorri@crystyl:- distinctions in our histories"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "An excellent idea, Ambassador. And going back to the subject of first contact we were discussing earlier, I presume more of your entourage would like to speak with members of our -
T'Lana@anncaris - Starfleet and Coalition, perhaps see what things are like for themselves?"
Lorri@crystyl:"Yes, we are in no rush to head back and would like to spend time here getting to know you all. While we build the foundations of a healthy new friendship formally, it could be interesting for -
Lorri@crystyl:- everyone to spend time among your people. Not unlike shore leave rotations, you might say. But there are also collaborative working opportunities that the Captain has the authority to explore with-
Lorri@crystyl:- you. I believe she has already stated our preparedness to support your search for her missing counterpart here, and further mutual study of the technology that allows us to make these -
Lorri@crystyl:- transdimensional journeys could also be beneficial to all"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali nods, "That can all be arranged. It may be advisable to avoid contact with any direct counterparts. If you could provide us with a crew roster, we'll try to ensure that people -
T'Lana@anncaris - don't start running into themselves, unless they wish to, of course."
Lorri@crystyl:"Yes, in line with the concerns I expressed earlier I believe any such encounters - at least initially - should be closely monitored. Though as we have already seen, associations are far too common -
Lorri@crystyl:- for us to account for. We can provide said information and plan visits accordingly"
T'Lana@anncaris | Admiral Ali: "Agreed. I'll have our staff coordinate with yours on these visits, and on any collaborative projects we may wish to undertake."
—
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Back on the Courageous, the two cadets complete their excitement-filled shift. Their reliefs for the next shift arrive and they hand off their consoles to the officers, explaining the data -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - they had collected. Mariel finishes first as Kayleigh has more tactical data on the ships to go over, while she only has scans of the rift in the period it was open
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris waits for Kayleigh by the turbolift. After an extra minute, Kayleigh is finished at her console as well
Kayleigh@crystyl joins her, "You did not have to wait for me"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I know, but I wanted to so we can head back to quarters together!" As she turns to the lift, Commander Sh'raovel suddenly stands from her seat
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "A moment please, Cadets."
Kayleigh@crystyl pauses and turns, "Commander?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "Cadet T'Mer has been called to an extra duty shift on Coalition HQ as part of the Admiral's personal security escort. She'll be finished soon, though."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Thank you for the information Commander. We would have exerted unneccessary time tracking her down"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel smiles, "I thought you'd like to know. Your temporary posting on the Courageous is complete now. I wanted to thank you for your work here, and I hope it's been an educational -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - for you two. Certainly more exciting than I initially intended it to be."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"It was more than any of could have anticipated. It has certainly been an educational experience on our part. But, do you not require Cadet Tanglao to continue the investigation?"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "We have a few things we can look into from what she saw in the corridors. Nothing that tells us exactly what the infiltrators were up to or exposes anyone directly, but it's better -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - than nothing. If you want to help, you're welcome to stop by again on another weekend, but your classes resume tomorrow, don't they?"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Yes, we are scheduled to resume activity at the annex" she looks to Mariel, "If you wish to return here at a later time, I am not adverse"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles, "That works for me!"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "You shouold probably get back to the annex tonight to get rested for your classes tomorrow. The Courageous will probably be remaining here with our guests from the other universe, -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - but we can send a shuttle to take you back if you like, once T'Mer returns from her extra shift. Alternatively, we could transport you over to the HQ facility. You can wait for her there and -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - grab a transport craft when you're all done."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"I do not believe personal curiosity is sufficient reason for us to intrude on activites at HQ, so it is probably best if we return ahead of T'Mer. Though we can take her things with us, if a -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- message could be relayed in the mean time so she knows to head straight back to the annex when her current shift is over"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "Good thinking, Cadet. I'll have a shuttle for you standing by, and we'll let T'Mer know when she's finished over at HQ."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Until next time then Commander, thank you again"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Sh'raovel: "Thank /you/, Cadets. And good luck with your studies."
Kayleigh@crystyl continues into the turbolift with Mariel
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris steps in as well, "That was quite an eventful first bridge shift! Well, second for you."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"It was indeed most unexpected. You appear to have handled yourself well regardless"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I won't pretend it wasn't intense at times...but I think it was more intense for you on Tactical. A lot of the time I didn't have a good answer for the Admiral because I didn't know what was going -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- on with the rift, but no one really knew what was happening there. All the science departments I was in contact with on the other Starfleet ships were in the same place I was. But you had to -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- try and figure out how to fight those infiltrator ships, and then you had all of the ships that came through to scan and analyze."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"It was a lot more than I was prepared for at times, yes. But thankfully this crew seems highly sympathetic to our position, even the Admiral was most considerate"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles and nods, "That they were! I think they felt bad for putting us in the middle of that situation by accident."
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris steps out of the lift as it arrives at their destination
Kayleigh@crystyl:"I think the same could be said for the entire fact that they had to place us on unsupervised duty shifts, let alone what occurred"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"True. But it was a good experience to know not just what working on a bridge is like, but one in the middle of dealing with an actual situation! I mean there's some holodeck recreations of real -
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- bridge situations, but it's not quite the same. Especially when they're based on major missions and you know how it ends."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"That is very true, and those scenarios still typically play out from the perspective of fully trained officers who are expected to be there. The situation faced here was quite unique, and worthy of-
Kayleigh@crystyl:- further study from the social aspect as much as the significant events which occurred"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Yeah. As intense as it was, I'm glad we got to do all that! I hope the rest of the week is less eventful, though!" she laughs
Kayleigh@crystyl:"That would be agreeable. We require time to fully assimilate this experience, and I would like to begin a paper on it"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"On the experience, or these new ships from the other universe?"
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Both I suppose, but everyone will be looking to study the new arrivals in some capacity. Even though we have unique insights, it is a less unique field. The experience of being thrust into those -
Kayleigh@crystyl:- bridge positions alongside a less than prime crew is something that I think would be of far greater value in the eyes of our professors"
Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Good point. First, let's get our stuff and T'Mer's and get back to the Annex."
Kayleigh@crystyl:"Agreed"
