Tensions remain high for everyone at the Heart as the threat of the mysterious 'infiltrators' looms over like a dark but unseen shadow. While the cadets attempt to fathom a way to more effectively contribute in this time of uncertainty, events unfold around them that get them more directly involved than they bargained for.

Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | On an otherwise unremarkable day in the Sphere, Kayleigh is studying in the area fondly dubbed the 'library' of the Annex by enough cadets that even the instructors have begun to refer to it - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - as such. Of course, there are no physical books here, and any data accessible here is also accessible from any other console in the facility. It's more of a social work area with consoles, - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - larger tables, and holoprojectors, serving a similar purpose to a library in a traditional Earth learning institution Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | As Kayleigh studies, she notices a nearby group of four cadets whispering to one another and checking their PADDs. The group disperses, with three of them heading off while one remains at his - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - seat, tapping away at the console built into the desk. A pair of fourth-year cadets step in almost right as the younger cadets exit, moving over to a different desk to check something with - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - an unusual amount of urgency and curiosity visible on their faces Kayleigh@crystyl remains mindful and observant, even a little curious as to any unusual activity around herself. But also makes a focused effort to not be nosy or pry, simply getting on with her study and asking - Kayleigh@crystyl - herself internally why she subjects herself to this room of illogical distractions Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kayleigh observes a buzz in activity. Many of the cadets seem to be talking about something here, but as this is a 'library,' they are keeping their voices too low even for Vulcan ears - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - to coherently determine what's going on. As the minutes go by, the doors slide open again and a familiar face walks in Mariel Tanglao@anncaris steps over to Kayleigh's table, "Hello Kay!" Kayleigh@crystyl looks up, maintining the hushed tones acceptable to the area, "Greetings Mariel" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Observing people socializing as usual?" she grins Kayleigh@crystyl:"Indeed. The implied social courtesies of this area present a straightforward set of rules that I find it interesting to see how different people respond to" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris looks around, "Well, there's a lot more talking in here than usual. Must be the latest news." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I have noticed approximately 34.8% increase in the average level of discussion occurring here" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "I'm not surprised. Though it looks like some people are leaving to discuss things in a place where they don't have to whisper," she notes as a group of third-year cadets stand and head out Kayleigh@crystyl:"Am I to take it by your interest in this phenomena that this discussion is a precursor to your request that I join you in following suit?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"You make it sound so formal when you put it that way..." Kayleigh@crystyl perks a brow, failing to see the negative in the words to match the tone Mariel Tanglao@anncaris chuckles and takes a seat beside Kayleigh, "I take it you haven't heard the news yet?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"I was not aware that there was news to be heard" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"That's what everyone's discussing!" She hands Kayleigh her PADD Kayleigh@crystyl sets her own to one side, taking the offered PADD with a curious glance to it's contents Mariel Tanglao@anncaris 's PADD is open to an FNN news article titled, "Starfleet Hero Exposes Corrupt Flag Officer." Below the headline is an image of the recently resurfaced former Starfleet captain Benjamin Sisko, - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - his face instantly recognizable despite now wearing Bajoran-style robes. He seems to be standing angrily on the promenade of Deep Space Nine, a fist clenched and either about to punch someone - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - or having just done so. Keen-eyed viewers would also notice Garak among the civilian crowd gathered behind him, his Cardassian features standing out from the mostly Bajoran and human - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - onlookers. He is dressed in plainclothes rather than his Cardassian councillor's formal wear. Garak's name is nowhere to be found in the article however, and what his role was in these events - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - is anyone's guess; just as the spy turned tailor turned politician would no doubt prefer Kayleigh@crystyl:"Fascinating. Though it does stir further thoughts of the context behind this supposed corruption" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "That's what everyone's talking about." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Reading further through the article, Kayleigh sees that the exposed flag officer is Commodore Kehl Th'zorril of Starfleet Security, the same Andorian who led the investigation into possible - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - infiltrators here in the Heart not long ago. The report does not provide details on the supposed corruption, but mentions that civilians present on DS9 claims Th'zorril escaped Starfleet - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - custody on an unidentified vessel. Starfleet has not yet given an official statement on the matter, but the Bajoran government has, stating that this is a conspiracy running deep within the - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - Federation and threatening to secede if it isn't sorted out and continues threatening Bajoran interests Kayleigh@crystyl:"Things seem to be getting out of hand..." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"This is the most comprehensive report and the other news agencies have even less information, but it sounds like it's connected to what's been going on here. It's all just a guess of course, but - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- you can see how people are connecting the dots. It's the logical train of thought, after all." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Indeed I can. Given the ill-conceived attempt to hastily shut down DSEC operations on what was - at best - circumstantial evidence I believe, I find it no surprise that the person responsible has - Kayleigh@crystyl:- now been found to be a part of the corruption. This is troubling though, if it is getting to such a point where worlds are threatening to secede..." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Yeah...I guess Bajor's always been a more independent system than most. I can't see any of the core Federation worlds seceding, but it's definitely concerning..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"We had an interesting debate on this in class recently, where the analogy was used of comparing an organization like the Federation to something called a 'house of cards'" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I've heard that term before. It's an old Earth saying, isn't it?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"I believe so" she nods, "Though I am not overly familiar with the concept myself" Kayleigh@crystyl:"The principle however was that despite the appearance of a strong structure, all it takes is one member weakening for the structure to collapse" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Oooh, I think I see the analogy. If one planet secedes, even a peripheral one, it gives the idea that the Federation isn't working in the interests of all members. So others might follow suit, - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - maybe more worlds in the outer regions first, and eventually it could all fall apart." Kayleigh@crystyl:"That was the nature of the debate, yes. Quite the interesting topic of discussion, however seeing it in public news like this actually unfolding is rather more disconerting" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Well, they're only just threatening to secede. It could just be a political move, to get more support from the Federation or something. I've heard that the region's getting a lot of refugees from - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- the Gamma Quadrant and is having some trouble there." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Refugees from the Gamma Quadrant? I wonder how that fits into it all" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"The last news report I saw mentioning that region talked about a refugee crisis from the Gamma Quadrant. Apparently the Dominion isn't doing very well. The Cardassians aren't doing much to help, - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- working with Gamma Quadrant races is a bit of a sore spot for them after the war and all. So the Federation worlds in the area are pretty much trying to take it all on by themselves." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I do not envy our senior and flag officers right now. This can not be an easy time for anyone in a position of authority" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Yeah, me neither. It's hard to stabilize a house of cards when it starts getting shaky. I...think I used that analogy right. I've never actually tried building anything from cards, but we made - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- some very fragile things for physics class demonstrations when I was younger," she chuckles Kayleigh@crystyl:"Either way, I now find myself curious as to if the reason for so much hype here on the subject is because many share my own feeling of vague frustration at not being able to do anything about it" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "Probably. That, or just the initial excitement of big dramatic news like this." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"But as you said, there's not much we can do about it, sadly..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Even with things here at the Heart, I can not deny the feeling that we should be doing more - cadets or not" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Me too. We're still members of Starfleet as cadets, after all!" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Perhaps we should discuss it with one of the professors and seek opportunities to assist then" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods and stands, "I think I know just the one!" Kayleigh@crystyl watches curiously for a moment before narrowing her eyes slightly, "So this was your intention from the start... very well" she stands, packing up her research Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I promise I did not plan all this out. I just had a good thought on who to go to, that's all!" Kayleigh@crystyl hrms, "Your attempts at deception are ill-conceived... but entertaining" she notes, almost sounding like she's attempting humour! Mariel Tanglao@anncaris chuckles, "Well I'm glad you're having fun. Wait...was that a joke?" Kayleigh@crystyl perks a brow, "I don't know, was it?" she definitely seems to be trolling at this point. The sneak... Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Okay, you are /so/ doing this on purpose. Anyways, follow me!" Kayleigh@crystyl follows, "So who did you have in mind for us to speak with?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Professor H'Raarin, the primary security instructor. If anyone can give us a way to help, it's probably him! I haven't taken his courses yet, but I met him when I was accompanying T'Mer to her - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- classes." Kayleigh@crystyl:"He is a logical choice" she concurs Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles, "I thought you'd think so!" — Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The two make their way to Professor H'Raarin's office, seeing heightened levels of conversation throughout the Annex as they do Kayleigh@crystyl chimes the door on arrival Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Professor H'Raarin's voice comes from within, "One moment, please." Kayleigh@crystyl waits patiently with a glance to Mariel Mariel Tanglao@anncaris glances back at Kayleigh, "Hopefully we're not interrupting anything important..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I am sure that if we were, we would have simply been turned away" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "Good point. Probably just caught him talking with someone else or something." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Professor H'Raarin's voice soon sounds again, "Come in." Kayleigh@crystyl:"There we go" she nods, stepping into the office Kayleigh@crystyl:"Good day Professor, we hope we are not disrupting you with this visit" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The professor, a large Caitian with hard features and a sizable mane, sits behind his desk, "Not at all, Cadets. What can I do for you?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Well Sir, I hope this does not sound presumptuous on our part. It is just that both Cadet Tanglao and myself are feeling a great deal of unrest in light of the news from DS9. Given the context of - Kayleigh@crystyl:- all that has transpired here prior to this, we are quite naturally concerned and feel that it is our duty to aid the situation. Whilst acknowledging that our capacity to act is limited by our roles Kayleigh@crystyl:- as cadets, we still feel duty bound to act. However we do not know how best we can help the situation, which is why have come to seek your guidance, Sir" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin nods, "I understand what you're feeling. I knew Commodore Th'zorril, or thought I did. We weren't close friends or anything, but I met him on multiple occasions, including his recent - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - visit here. Makes you wonder what people around you are hiding, and how deep this infiltration really goes." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Being in class with Cadet T'Pia, I am unable to deny a sense of... personal interest in this infiltration situation. The inability to act is quite... inconvenient. As a point of curiosity Sir since- Kayleigh@crystyl:- you already raised it; might I ask your opinion on the Commodore's recent visit here and the scritinization of DSEC?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "That's what I was just talking to my collegues about," he gestures to the chairs. "Have a seat, cadets." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Thank you Sir" she acknowledges, taking a seat Mariel Tanglao@anncaris takes a seat as well Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "We still don't have all the details here, but assuming the Commodore is involved with the conspiracy, which seems more likely than not, I suspect his visit here was just to slow us - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - down. We were starting to expose their presence in the Heart, after all. That said, since we, or more accurately your classmate Cadet T'Pia, started the exposing to begin with, I think the - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - premise of his visit wasn't entirely a lie. We found two infiltrators working as junior officers in DSEC. If this conspiracy goes deep enough to involve flag officers, I think we're only just - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - scratching the surface of things in the Sphere." Kayleigh@crystyl:"If that is the case Sir, then there must be something more we can do control the situation" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin sighs, "I wish there was more /I/ could do too. Every day, this seems to get worse. The Federation's faced conspiracies and infiltration in the past, but nothing like this. Trust me, - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - I want to be out there exposing these people too. But my duty lies here, with this academy and you cadets. We all have our part to play. Not all of us are Sisko or Picard, but we're just as - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - important, if not as famous. They wouldn't be the heroes they are without their crews, without the rank and file of Starfleet." Kayleigh@crystyl glances to Mariel, "We share this opinion Sir, and I do not believe either of us has partaken in - what was the phrase again... - dellusions of grand dirt? Yes, that sounds right. We are not - Kayleigh@crystyl:- seeking glorification or misconceptions of heroism, we simply seek a means to more actively contribute as that rank and file of Starfleet. I am aware that we may easily be dismissed as 'just - Kayleigh@crystyl:- cadets', and whilst the point has it's merit, we are also still Starfleet officers of a sort. And that is something we all share regardless of rank, which is why we want to help however we can" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris chuckles, "Grandeur. It's delusions of grandeur, Kay." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Ah, a most curious linguistic quirk, that word. I shall have to research it's origins at a later time. But thank you for the correction" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin leans forward, "You're the cadets assigned to T'Mer, aren't you? The ones who caused all that trouble in one of the promenade areas." Kayleigh@crystyl rubs the back of her neck, "We are... Cadet T'Mer's mentors, yes. Though the implications of the description of said promenade activity may have been distorted through the reporting levels. At - Kayleigh@crystyl:- least, 'causing trouble' is not exactly something I wish to be associated with. After all, from our perspective we were dilligently investigating suspicious activity" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin chuckles and nods, "Yes, I read the Commandant's report as well as the variety of other reports on these events. You two are quite eager to help, aren't you? You've certainly got the - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - spirit for Starfleet. Tell you what- continue keeping your eyes open for suspicious activity. If you see something, let me know. Just don't go rushing in yourselves if you can help it." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Understood Sir, we will of course endeavour to report anything untoward" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "We all had to advance through Starfleet the same way, including Commodore Th'zorril and Lieutenant Hall. They were all cadets once too, so it's conceivable we could have - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - infiltrators right here at the academy. But be careful not to let your vigilance turn into paranoia. It's true, anyone could be an infiltrator, even you or I. Don't start pointing fingers - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - until you have solid evidence, though. We don't want this to turn into a raaith chase- a witch hunt, as the humans call it." Kayleigh@crystyl perks a brow, "Another curious analogy I will have to research contextually. And you do make a most valid and logical point Sir, we will make sure to balance ourselves accordingly. And if I may ask- Kayleigh@crystyl:- on the subject; this whole situation is most certainly going to stir feelings of paranoia and suspicion - particularly among those who are more emotionally inclined - which on top of study - Kayleigh@crystyl:- stresses could quite conceivably lead to a rise in confrontations. Do you have any recommendations for handling such situations?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "The same recommendation I usually give to security personnel, and cadets training to work in security. Keep a cool head- usually not a problem for Vulcans," he chuckles slightly, - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - "avoid escalation, and if things seem to be escalating, do what you can to de-escalate. Same goes for if you see confrontations not involving you. De-escalate tensions if they're going up and - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - break them up if things get bad. If someone in particular seems to be causing trouble repeatedly, let us academy staff know and we'll look into it." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Understood Sir, thank you for the advice" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin smiles, "I'm happy to help. Remember, if you see anything, let me know. I appreciate your eagerness to help, but rushing in head-first rarely leads to a good result." Kayleigh@crystyl nods and stands, "We will keep that in mind. Thank you for your time Professor" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods and stands as well Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "If there's anything specific that comes up which I think you can help with, I'll be sure to let you two know. Until then, just keep your eyes open. And keep up the good work with - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - T'Mer. It's not easy being the first Iconian in Starfleet, but she's learning well, and I've no doubt you two have a big role in that." Kayleigh@crystyl:"That is kind of you to say, Sir. We will continue to do our best for her" she nods again before turning and heading out Mariel Tanglao@anncaris follows Kayleigh out, "I agree with the Professor, there's probably still infiltrators around here somewhere. But we should also avoid another promenade incident..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"On that, you will hear no argument from me" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"So...we go about business as usual and keep our eyes out for suspicious behaviour, then? Or do you want to visit some public areas like the promenade sometime, see what we can find?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"If we have sufficient justification, then observing larger areas may be beneficial. but for the most part, we would be best served by simply continuing our regular routines and remaining observant" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "Good logic as always, Kay," she smiles. "So, back to people watching in the library, or want to go someplace else?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"This is still time I have allotted to study, though I have no particular draw to the library if you have somewhere else in mind" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I like the library. Let's head back there for a bit!" Kayleigh@crystyl nods, "Very good then" — Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Three days has passed since the news from DS9. Around the Annex, things are starting to settle back to normal. There is still the occasional discussion on new developments that the cadets are - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - learning through news reports, but nothing more dramatic than the initial events Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kayleigh is once again in the Academy bar during an off period between classes Kayleigh@crystyl sits at her usual seat, minding her own business Mariel Tanglao@anncaris steps into bar, looking to Kayleigh's usual seat immediately and heading over upon finding her there, "Thought you'd be in your chair, Kay!" Kayleigh@crystyl:"This would be the logical place to seek me out. How are you Mariel?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles, "I learned something, but we probably shouldn't talk about it in here. You in the middle of anything important, or fancy going for a walk?" Kayleigh@crystyl shakes her head, "Nothing that can not wait, let us walk then" she stands Mariel Tanglao@anncaris turns and leads the way out of the bar, "How have you been? Coursework going well I assume? You Vulcans are always ahead of everyone on those," she chuckles Kayleigh@crystyl:"I am still finding difficulty in determining an optimal career path. But generally yes, studies always tend to go well with a logical approach" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles, "I thought as much! I'm still deciding an optimal career path too, but I think I'll stick with science for now. Maybe decide between specializing in archaeology or biology in a bit, but - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - we'll see!" Kayleigh@crystyl:"At least you are settled that far. I am still attempting to verify that tactical is the best core for me" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "What else are you considering? Or are you just not sure about tactical but haven't even gotten to deciding which alternative is most favourable yet?” Kayleigh@crystyl:"The latter. I am confident that I could make a respectable career in any field, however the standard precursor to academy entry of long term plans invariable leans towards command. And of course - Kayleigh@crystyl:- that route is best supported through tactical. However recent events have me questioning the validity of that decision" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Why's that?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"I suppose just seeing T'Mer go through a much more innocent an un-swayed approach to the decision" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "Oooh. Yes, I can see how that would affect you. She doesn't have the family background and aspiration to command or anything." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Exactly, no external influence or predetermination. Seeing that approach has simply made me think more about whether I have truly chosen the path that is best for me, or simply the one that is - Kayleigh@crystyl:- expected of me" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Well, let me know if there's anything I can do to help with your deciding!" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | They reach a hallway on the edge of the Annex facility, with large windows looking out towards the Sphere surface. There's no one around at the moment and Mariel comes to a stop Kayleigh@crystyl:"I will surely do so" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Anyways, you remember the weird behaviour we've been seeing in Cadet Miklos in the last few days?" Kayleigh@crystyl nods, "Of course" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I was walking after him earlier- not really following, just...travelling down the same halls. And I got a vision that I'm pretty sure explains why he's been sneaking around..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Oh?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"He's been cheating on Chisuzu with Cadet Shavinnia! So, definitely not infiltration related. Not good either, though..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"This is why emotional attachment is such a dangerous thing" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Some might argue he wasn't emotionally attached /enough/ in this case...but that's besides the point. At least we know he's not part of the whole conspiracy business." Kayleigh@crystyl:"We don't actually know that anyone here is" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Well, true. He could be cheating /and/ involved with the conspiracy. But he does have another valid reason for sneaking around now, so it doesn't make him as suspicious as he was before, right?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Agreed, it would be ill-advised to pursue that line of inquiry further at this point" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "And we probably shouldn't get involved in his personal-" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris is suddenly cut off as shutters begin to close over the windows and the lighting turns a faint red hue Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | A woman's voice sounds over the Academy intercomm: "Attention. The Starfleet Academy Annex has entered a state of lockdown. Please remain on facility grounds unless otherwise instructed by a - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - member of Academy staff." Kayleigh@crystyl looks to Mariel with a perked brow, "This is highly irregular" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"You don't say..." she looks around. "What's the procedure for this again? It's like red alert, but we don't have stations to get to..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Mustering at the dorms would be the most fruitful I believe" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "Let's head there, then. Probably don't want to be by ourselves in the halls if something's wrong..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"We should keep an eye out for any of the professors to learn more from on the way" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Good thinking," she turns and starts leading the way towards the dorms — Mariel Tanglao@anncaris and Kayleigh make ther way back towards the dorms through the halls of the Annex facility, which now glow with the same faint red lighting as the hall they came from Kayleigh@crystyl has a sudden thought as they walk, tapping her combadge, "Kayleigh to T'Mer" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | T'Mer's voice comes through her combadge, "This is T'Mer! Is that the right response? Or is it T'Mer here? Or just my name, I think I've heard the professors doing that too..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"There is no specific format required T'Mer, you need not fret. I thought it prudent to check in with you given the sudden change of circumstances here, are you alright?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris <C - T'Mer> "Everything's normal here, except for the light change and the windows closing. Not sure what this lockdown is about..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"We are also unsure at the moment. We are returning the dormitory for now as a matter of course. If you are in an agreeable position, I suggest you do the same" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris <C - T'Mer> "I'm on my way!" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Remain wary T'Mer, we will see you there shortly" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | As the two continue through the facility, they catch sight of Professor Rouhani walking down an intersecting hall Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Look, there's Professor Rouhani!" Kayleigh@crystyl:"An excellent opportunity to learn more" she nods before stepping up her pace, "Professor!" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Rouhani stops, turning to the two, "Cadets. Can I help you?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Can you tell us anything about the nature of this lockdown?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Rouhani: "I'm afraid I don't have all the information yet, either. I'm told it's a precautionary measure. There's no immediate threat to the Academy, but something's happening elsewhere in the - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - Sphere." Kayleigh@crystyl:"What kind of something?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Rouhani: "I don't know. But whatever it is, it's enough of a potential danger for the Commandant to declare a lockdown. Classes are still proceeding as scheduled, but no one comes in or leaves - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - the Annex without either H'Raarin or Commodore Becket's approval." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Forgive me Sir, but is this not highly irregular? I can understand not divulging details to Cadets for concern of spreading panic. But surely you should have been told?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Rouhani: "I was told, as much as we currently know. It's not clear what exactly is going on and there's a few conflicting reports. I wouldn't want to mislead you with unconfirmed information." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I understand Sir, but given the circumstances... I mean, enforcing a lockdown is not the most efficient means of protecting those on the inside. If the threat was elsewhere in the Heart, then - Kayleigh@crystyl:- evacuation of non-essential personnel would have been more prudent a course, if anything. A lockdown is only the more logical choice when you are attempting to contain a threat. And forgive me - Kayleigh@crystyl:- for saying Sir, but if we are to be locked in with a potential threat then I would prefer to know the circumstances in order to better my chances for survival. Hypothetically speaking, of course" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Rouhani: "Hard to argue with Vulcan logic..." she sighs. "We don't have any reason at present to believe that there is a threat in the Annex at the moment. But what's happening is based around - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - a Starfleet ship and her crew. All Starfleet ships and facilities have gone into lockdown to be safe. Partly to contain any more potential threats and partly to make sure if that the potential - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - threats are in control of a ship, they can't move to assist their allies. So yes, there could be a threat here, but there's no direct evidence at the moment." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I see, thank you for the explanation. Can we take it then that a ship has gone rogue?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Rouhani: "That's the part we aren't sure about. All we know is that there's a mutiny, but it's unclear which side is loyal to Starfleet. The Coalition has the ship contained. As I said, - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - there's no immediate threat to the Academy. This is all a precaution, and we'll let you know if the situation changes." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Of course, understood Professor. But then if there are other infiltrators within the complex, this may well have them on the defensive and seeking to flee as they did in the Challenger incident. We- Kayleigh@crystyl:- should get back to the dormitory as I asked T'Mer to rendezvous there in the first instance" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Rouhani nods, "Stay safe, Cadets." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Thank you Professor, and if anything changes the situation here in the annex, you know you can call on us" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris glances to Kayleigh as Rouhani continues down the intersecting hall, "Definitely sounds like someone's found more infiltrators..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Perhaps. This could also be a simple escalation of paranoia, or even disruption owing to political differences in the wake of the news from DS9" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"True, but to lead to a full mutiny on a Starfleet ship?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Agreed, the alternatives are far less likely than the presumed infiltration. Nonetheless, assumption is a dangerous thing in any circumstances" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "Let's get back to the dorms first. Not much we can do to help from here, and it sounds like the Coalition has that particular situation under control. We'll just have to be extra careful - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - about any infiltrators that might be here." Kayleigh@crystyl nods, "First things first, we must take care of T'Mer as this is a whole new experience for her" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Yeah, we've got to look out for her!" — Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The two arrive back at the dorms to find T'Mer there, along with many other cadets who came to the same conclusion of gathering at the dorms Mariel Tanglao@anncaris waves, "Hey T'Mer! No trouble making it back here I hope?" Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer shakes her head, "The circumstances have only made the hallway lighting less convenient, fortunately they did not reroute any of the established transit routes. Oh my! Is that a thing? Do - Kayleigh@crystyl:- Starfleet reconfigure their maps in an emergency to confuse enemies? Quite ingenious! Though I imagine also quite confusing even for their own people..." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris chuckles, "Yes, that would not be a good idea..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"T'Mer it is a figure of speech, not a literal expression of pathfinding. It is meant to express concern for another's wellbeing in unusual circumstances" Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer thinks a moment, tapping a long finger against her chin, "Ahh, I see now!" looking back to Mariel, "That is very considerate of you to ask, I am quite well thank you" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles, "Now that you mention it, navigating the Annex is probably easier for you, isn't it? Since this facility is of Iconian design and probably made by your people with your psychology in - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - mind. I got lost quite a few times in my first weeks here. Still do on occasion when I get lost in my thoughts!" Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer: "I suppose, though I can't say I ever really given it much thought. So what is the purpose of this gathering?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Well...I guess we just thought it was safer together. With the lockdown and all, if something happens, it's probably not a good idea to be caught somewhere alone. In case we come under attack or - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- something like that." Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer: "Attack? If we are under attack then this is not the best place to be. We should be manning the facility defenses and mobilizing the drones!" Kayleigh@crystyl | Of course T'Mer's voice carries across the room as well, so others no doubt heard that Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"No, no, we're not under attack! It's just for...just in case something happens!" she looks to Kayleigh for help to logically explain as the other cadets start concerned conversations about an attack Kayleigh@crystyl:"There is no cause for alarm, you all know how excitable T'Mer can get" thinks on her next works, about to relay loose details shared by the Professor but then gets an idea, "The truth is simply - Kayleigh@crystyl:- that a security situation has arisen, and the most logical response was to contain the annex while it is resolved. We spoke with one of the Professors and they urged business as usual, though - Kayleigh@crystyl:- initial congregation as we have here was also viewed as a positive course. Given the nature of the threat, it is logical to have everybody centrally located and accounted for" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | One of the cadets speak up, "Security situation? What kind of security situation? Is it happening inside the Annex?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Naturally Iona, the Professor was not obligated to share specifics of an ongoing security situation with us as cadets. However it is only logical to lockdown a facility in order to contain a - Kayleigh@crystyl:- situation. That is why we would do best to initially gather the other students here to ensure everyone is safe and accounted for. This... could be viewed as an opportunity to demonstrate our - Kayleigh@crystyl:- resolve and reliability to the Professors, so I plan to take advantage of the situation and do just that and begin accounting for my classmates. If any of you are so inclined, I would suggest you - Kayleigh@crystyl:- do the same" Kayleigh@crystyl is totally not an evil genius mentally steepling her fingertips and smirking as she masterfully manipulates those around her. Nope... Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Another cadet speaks up, "What happens if someone's not accounted for? Should we go look for them?" Kayleigh@crystyl thinks on this a moment, "In the first instance, I would suggest focusing on accounting for everyone. Should that situation arise, then we can address it collectively. The one recommendation I - Kayleigh@crystyl:- would strongly make though is that if you do find you are unable to reach someone, do not act rashly by running out to find them" she looks to T'Mer, "Perhaps you could assist us by centralizing - Kayleigh@crystyl:- everybody's efforts here. When each class has fully accounted for themselves, have a representative report to T'Mer" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The cadets nod and immediately get to work accounting for everyone Kayleigh@crystyl glances to Mariel, "I sense an impending interrogation..." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "What exactly are you planning, Kay..." Kayleigh@crystyl makes sure not to be overheard, "If there is any infiltrator within the annex, this is an optimum time to discover them" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris whispers quietly, "Oooh, and you're getting the other cadets to help us find them?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"We could not possibly account for everyone ourselves without raising suspicion. By presenting a... creative teling of the truth, my aim was to enlist innocent help in gathering this information, - Kayleigh@crystyl:- yes. Was this wrong? It seemed to be the logical choice given the circumstances" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I don't like deceiving our fellow cadets, but if there /are/ any infiltrators among us, I guess telling the truth would let them know what we're up to. So it's a clever plan...maybe Starfleet - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - Intelligence should be one of those career options for you to consider," she smirks slightly Kayleigh@crystyl perks a brow, "Curious, I had not considered that. In any case, as you know Vulcans can not lie. I simply presented the truth in a designed fashion as a means to exercise some element of control - Kayleigh@crystyl:- over the situation" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "And now everyone's doing what we want /and/ have a purpose to keep them occupied rather than panicking. I think you'll do well for yourself in Command, too!" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Well thanks to recent events, most notably since meeting you..." she narrows her eyes a little, "...I have gained beneficial experience in many areas" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles, "I'm glad I was able to help, then!" She looks back to the other cadets. "Now we wait to see if they find anything..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"And to account for our own class, there is much to be done if we are to earn some extra credit out of this" she steps away, pulling out a PADD and starting to account for people — Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Soon, the classes begin to report in to T'Mer, confirming the whereabouts of their fellows. One of the last to report in is Cadet Kerafar. The Bolian makes his way up to T'Mer... Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar: "So, we've managed to account for all but one of our class..." Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer: "One student missing? And you are quite certain at this point?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar nods, "We can't find Cadet Shavinnia. She's not here with us and her combadge is either off or she doesn't have it with her." Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer: "I am still far from being an expert, but I believe that is highly irregular is it not?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar: "Definitely. I'd go look for her, but we were told to come to you first, so, here I am." Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer nods, "That is wise. I might be unfamiliar with Starfleet, but I am quite familiar with misper's from my time with station security. Going out to look for the cadet yourself may put you in - Kayleigh@crystyl - danger, and it could also result in you also going missing" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar nods, "We'll stay here, then. You're a security cadet, right?" Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer nods, "Yes, for now at least until I find my own path. Come, we need to determine our next course of action but we should gather the others first" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar turns to gather the others of his class Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer approaches Kay & Mar in the mean time, "Cadets, we seem to have one missing" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris turns, "Really? Who is it?" Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer: "Cadet Kerafar reports that his class is all accounted for except for Cadet Shavinnia. Furthermore, he says that her combadge is either disabled or she does not have it with her" Kayleigh@crystyl:"That is indeed troubling" she taps her combadge and tries to call Shavinnia as a matter of course Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | As expected, Kayleigh is not able to get through to her Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"What about Cadet Miklos? Is he accounted for?" Kayleigh@crystyl turns back to her console, tapping, "Computer, locate Cadet Shavinnia" Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer checks her registoer and nods, "Yes, Miklos is accounted for" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Meanwhile, the computer replies, "Cadet Shavinnia is in Communications Array Maintenance Area Delta." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"That's weird. She isn't taking any comms classes. And if Miklos isn't here, she isn't sneaking off with him either..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"The comms array...?" she questions aloud, "Computer, list all other biosigns in that sector block" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Computer: "Crewman Owen Tanner. Crewman Murreqa. Petty Officer Second Class Ho Kwang-Hyun." Kayleigh@crystyl hrms, "Computer, list the current active duty assignments for each of the listed personnel" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The names of the three enlisted appear on the console in front of Kayleigh. All three are part of the same maintenance team, currently assigned to perform maintenance in that section of the Annex Mariel Tanglao@anncaris looks to the console, "Well, they all seem to have a reason to be there. Only Cadet Shavinnia doesn't..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I believe this is just cause to report in. Mariel, it might be prudent if you could contact that Petty Officer and warn them while I advise the Professor of our findings" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "I'm on it!" She steps off to contact the Petty Officer Kayleigh@crystyl meanwhile taps her own combadge and calls the Professor Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The Caitian's voice answers from her combadge, "H'Raarin here." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Cadet Kayleigh here, Sir. We have a potential situation for you" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris <C - H'Raarin> "What's going on, Cadet?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"We have been gathering the cadets, and have all but one accounted for. Cadet Shavinnia has gone dark and is either unwilling or unable to respond to comms. The computer shows her location as Comms - Kayleigh@crystyl:- Array Maintenance Delta, but there is no logical reason for her to be in that area" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris <C - H'Raarin> "Yes, you're right, that is quite suspicious. Thanks for letting me know. I'll take a team down to investigate. You're with the other cadets now?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Yes Professor, we have everyone else gathered here in the dormitory now. You should also know that Petty Officer Ho Kwang-Hyun is still in that area with two enlisted crewman on scheduled - Kayleigh@crystyl:- maintenance. We have also advised them of a potential situation" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris <C - H'Raarin> "Good. They should be getting out of the way if they know there's potential danger, but we'll keep an eye out in case they run into trouble. Stay with the other cadets and make - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - sure everyone's safe." Kayleigh@crystyl:"We will do so Professor, please let us know if we can do anything more to assist" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris < C - H'Raarin> "Will do, Cadet. Thanks again for the information." Kayleigh@crystyl turns to the sea of eager faces now observing from behind her and perks a brow, "Well. Since you all clearly heard everything there, I will assume no further update is needed from me" and promptly - Kayleigh@crystyl:- walks over to a table to pour herself a glass of water Mariel Tanglao@anncaris follows over, "Now we wait for the Professor to check it out..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"We have done all we reasonably can from our position" she looks to the others, "Thank you all for your aid in ensuring everybody's wellbeing. Without those efforts we may not have noticed - Kayleigh@crystyl:- Shavinnia's absence at all, though it is still uncertain if it was sufficiently timely or not, it is still far better than it would have been" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris smiles, "And T'Mer did a good job too!" She looks around to see if T'Mer followed them over Kayleigh@crystyl nods, "Yes, collating and effectively coordinating information during such situations is essential" Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer nods: "It is how we managed misper's back with station security" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Did you have lockdown situations like this when you were with station security? I know there was that one time Cadet T'Pia exposed infiltrators, but that was before I got here, so I don't know - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- what it was like." Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer: "There have been a few minor incidents, but nothing like this lockdown. It is more the comparison of a missing person case really, now those we got quite regularly as it can be easy for - Kayleigh@crystyl:- little ones to be separated from their families" Kayleigh@crystyl notices T'Mer's gaze and frowns a little, "Why do you look at me when you talk about little ones...?" Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer smiles, "I meant no offense, only that - being so popular on the promenade - you might also share some understanding of such occasions" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris grins at T'Mer's response Kayleigh@crystyl eyerolls, "In any case; yes, I am aware of basic procedures for missing persons from what I have observed on the promenade previously. That is why I knew your background there would make you - Kayleigh@crystyl:- ideally suited to coordinating this roll call" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Effective delegating tasks too! You'd definitely make a good captain Kay!" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Let's... not get carried away with ourselves now..." her cheeks darken slightly to blend with her pink hair Mariel Tanglao@anncaris chuckles, "Anyways, you're doing a great job taking charge in this situation! I wonder how long we're going to stay locked down. And what's happening outside..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Those are both valid queries right now" Kayleigh@crystyl means; she wants to know those answers too but doesn't know what to do about it, and is pouting on the inside Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"The windows are all closed, but the Annex is equipped with external sensors and viewers still. It's standard for any Starfleet facility, isn't it? Though we'd probably need special access for that…” Kayleigh@crystyl:"Not that special, I wouldn't have thought. Sensors might be a bit more involved, but I would not be surprised if at least one of the technical cadets here could get viewers to start with" Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer looks to Kerafar, "You are an engineering speciality are you not?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar nods, stepping over, "That's right. Can I help you with something?" Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer: "We want to try get some of the annex visual feeds up to see what is going on" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar: "Internally, or externally?" Kayleigh@crystyl chimes in, "Both could be beneficial. Sensors too if you can manage it" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar: "I'll see what I can do. Just give me a moment!" He heads over to one of the consoles and starts getting to work Kayleigh@crystyl looks around, focusing on the other engineering students, "I am sure Kerafar would welcome any assistance. If you think you can help, well, be glad that you can actually do something more than - Kayleigh@crystyl - idly stand and watch like us redshirts" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Several other Engineering cadets step over to help Kerafar. A short while later, the Bolian turns back to T'Mer, "Okay, I've got access to the external visuals feed and some access to the - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - internal ones. Mostly low-security areas like the hallways, the bar and all that." Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer smiles, "That's great!" Kayleigh@crystyl nods, "Indeed, a good collective effort. Now, let's see what is going on out there" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar gestures them over to the console, "I can't see much from where we are, but if you magnify here...there's a couple of Regulator ships gathered together." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | He taps on the console currently displaying the external feed, and indeed it zooms in to four Regulator ships in close proximity Kayleigh@crystyl:"That is definitely not a standard patrol formation" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar: "All the Starfleet ships in visual range seem to be stationary, too. I think the whole fleet might be locked down, not just us." Kayleigh@crystyl:"That seems to be accurate" she concurs Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | As Kerafar pans about the external view, a Nuhar Watcher comes into view, moving through the Sphere on what seems to be a patrol pattern Kayleigh@crystyl:"That is a Watcher. If everything is in lockdown, it would make sense for it to be conducting overwatch" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar nods, "It definitely seems like something major is happening in the Sphere. Can't see exactly what from here in the Academy, though." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Let's see what is going on inside the Academy" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar switches to the internal view, "Not much. Most of it is pretty empty right now. The occasional security patrol and maintenance personnel, but nothing of note that I can see." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Well I believe this is a preferable situation to view than anything untoward. Still, we should collectively monitor these feeds for signs of activity. Do you think you split the feed across - Kayleigh@crystyl:- multiple monitors?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar: "Easily done," He taps the console a bit, and the various internal and external feeds appear on the other monitors around the room. "There!" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar smiles, "Now you redshirts can have something to do in the meantime, too." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Exactly" she looks to the group, "There you have it, now it is our turn to contribute. Let's get on these monitors and see what we can learn" she heads over to take one herself too of course Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar: "We'll let you know as soon as anyone sees anything!" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris steps over to take one as well and the other cadets take consoles too. Some choose to observe alone, while others pair up or stay in groups, conversing among themselves while they keep an eye on - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - the various feeds — Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | A few minutes pass by as they monitor the visual feeds. Kayleigh, Mariel and T'Mer don't notice anything of interest, but then Cadet Kostenko speaks up.. Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kostenko: "I've got something!" Kayleigh@crystyl heads over to their station, "What have you found?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kostenko's station is showing the internal feed of a hallway. Professor H'Raarin and two enlisted security personnel make their way down the hall with Cadet Shavinnia beside them. She doesn't - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - appear to be restrained, but is looking a little glum Kayleigh@crystyl quietly observes, curious but also a little suspicious Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The four of them leave the feed's range soon enough, but not long after appear on a different feed monitored by a group of three cadets, who also raises Kay's attention Kayleigh@crystyl moves to continue watching, "Where are they taking her...?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The four appear in a third hallway, then eventually a fourth that Kayleigh recognizes, having passed through it not too long ago herself on her way to the dorms here Kayleigh@crystyl:"They appear to be bringing her back here, that is reassuring. But we should not give them cause for concern, conceal the surveillance" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar: "Hide all of them, or just the internal ones?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"All of them" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar nods, tapping away at his console. A few seconds later, the surveillance feeds disappear, and just in time as Professor H'Raarin steps inside, followed by the missing Orion cadet Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "Stay with your fellow cadets here. We'll talk about any consequences to your actions once I've discussed them with the Commandant." Kayleigh@crystyl looks over, "Professor? What's going on?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Cadet Shavinnia nods quietly, stepping over to Cadet Miklos while Professor H'Raarin approaches Kayleigh Kayleigh@crystyl meets him partway, eyes following Shavinnia before looking to the Professor Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "The lockdown process locked down all traffic in and out of the Annex. Not just shuttles and transporters, comm traffic as well. Cadet Shavinnia circumvented the block to contact her - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - mother on one of the Orion ships. The work she did on her combadge was why you couldn't reach her." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Well the important thing is that she is alright. And despite the questionable conduct, her initiative deserves merit if she was able to do that. And here of all places with the advanced systems of - Kayleigh@crystyl:the Heart to contend with" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin nods, "It was some impressive work, and she meant no malice by it. I'm sure the Commandant'll take that into consideration. But yes, she's alright now and back with all of you. Thanks - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - for notifying me, Cadet." Kayleigh@crystyl shakes her head, "Thank you Professor, for ensuring her safety in this difficult time. While you are here, may I ask if there is any more news on the situation?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "It's centred on the USS Courageous. Cadet Shavinnia's learned that from her mother already and I suspect it'll become common knowledge among you cadets anyways, so you might as well - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - hear it from me." Kayleigh@crystyl:"It sounds like the situation is still unfolding. We will remain here and await further orders" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar: "The Courageous? That's the ship leading Starfleet's efforts in Sphere defense, isn't it? And one of our tactically strongest ships by far." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin nods, "Fortunately, some of the Coalition factions have more advanced ships and technology than us. The Courageous shouldn't be putting anyone else at risk with the perimeter around - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - it. But the lockdown's still in place, just in case." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Of course" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The Caitian professor looks between Kayleigh and Mariel, "You wanted to help, right?" Kayleigh@crystyl nods, "Of course Professor, and that has not changed. Is there some way we can assist now?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin smiles, "I think there might be something you can do, yes. Come with me. You too, T'Mer. I think this could be a good experience for you." Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer doubletakes before joining them Kayleigh@crystyl follows the Professor, curious to see what has changed which they could now help with — Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin leads them through the largely empty halls of the Academy Annex and they soon come upon one of the transporter rooms Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Inside, a single Ops Petty Officer works behind the console, in a large space hosting two transporter pads Kayleigh@crystyl:"Professor?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "Alright. I need the three of you to stand back and observe for now. Think of it as a lesson in dealing with very different cultures. Do not intervene under any circumstances. That's - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - a direct order. Understand, cadets?" Kayleigh@crystyl nods, "Understood" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "Good." He steps up to one of the transporter pads, giving the operator a nod. "Energize." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Five figures materialize on one of the transporter pads. They seem to resemble H'Raarin, but with different coloured, purplish fur, and long fangs portruding from their mouths. The one at the - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - front of the group is even larger and taller than H'Raarin, though H'Raarin is already on the large side for a Caitian Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The large leader snarls and immediately leaps at H'Raarin. The Caitian professor leaps aside at the last possible second, using the larger feline's size to - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - his advantage as his opponent misses him and goes tumbling into the transporter console. The transporter operator stumbles back as H'Raarin grabs his dazed opponent by the back and hurls him - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - onto the floor, pouncing on top of him. Despite the intensity of the fight, those with a keen eye would notice that neither combatant has their claws protracted, which becomes - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - more clear as the two struggle on the ground but leave no marks on one another's uniforms Mariel Tanglao@anncaris glances to Kayleigh, uncertain about the situation Kayleigh@crystyl shares the glance, but gives a slight nod to indicate that she is content to observe the Professors order still Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The larger, purple felinoid seems to have the superior brute strength and manages to get on top of H'Raarin, but the security professor somehow wiggles his way free, kicking his opponent away - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - and rolling before he has a chance to pin him down again. He recovers from the role, assuming a ready stance, though his claws are still retracted. The purple felinoid turns around, assuming a - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - similar stance and snarling. All the while, the other four who beamed in with him watch the struggle from the transporter pad, also not intervening Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The professor hisses back and the two felinoids lock gazes before suddenly relaxing and clasping hands together Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "Captain K'Moras! Thank you for answering my call." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | K'Moras: "That's what the Klingons are paying me for. Good to see you're still in fighting shape after your retirement." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "I'm very much still in active service, thank you very much." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | K'Moras: "Teaching little kittens, not going on the front lines! That's what I call retired." Kayleigh@crystyl perks a brow, having never before considered herself to be a kitten Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "There still seems to be excitement enough here for the both of us." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | K'Moras: "Certainly seems so." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin finally turns back to the three cadets, "Cadets. This is Captain K'Moras of the Red Mane." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | K'Moras turns to the three as well, "So this is the newest generation of Starfleet. I see you got yourself an Iconian. Impressive." Kayleigh@crystyl raises her hand in a Vulcan greeting while T'Mer bows her head Mariel Tanglao@anncaris bows her head as well before remarking, "You're Ferasans, aren't you?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | K'Moras: "Very astute. This little kitten reads her books!" he laughs Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"But you're friends with Professor H'Raarin? I also read that Ferasans and Caitians have had a long-term rivalry." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | K'Moras: "We do. So did your people and the Klingons, and your people," he points to T'Mer, "and the whole kress galaxy. Your professor and I first met in battle, during the last war between - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - the Klingon Empire and your Federation." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "It's a long story. Let's get your people transported over while I brief these cadets." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | K'Moras nods and turns back to the transporter pad while H'Raarin gives the transporter operator a nod and he starts transporting more Ferasans in Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin turns back to the three once the transporter operator has his orders, "You've probably been told in early lessons to act tough to Klingons to earn their respect. Do away with the - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - traditional niceities and communicate with them the way they do with one another to earn their respect. Well, that was a live demonstration of such a principle at work." Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer nods dutifully, "I understand Professor, don't you worry! The next time I enter your class I will make sure to respectfully tackle you to the ground!" Kayleigh@crystyl facepalms Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin sighs, "I meant Ferasans, not Caitians. They're like us, but augmented, or at the very least descendants of augments," he looks to Mariel. "Like your Khan, except on Ferasa, he won - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - the war and those of us who weren't augmented fled offworld. Ferasans are more aggressive due to these augmentations, which is why they get along so well with Klingons." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Yes, so in short T'Mer... please don't tackle the Professor" Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer seems confused but nods her agreement Kayleigh@crystyl:"So if I may venture Professor... what exactly is the situation?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "With what's been going on, I can't in good faith put your safety in the hands of my security staff. Who knows where their loyalties really lie? So I got special dispensation from - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - Commodore Becket to call in K'Moras and his people. He may look like a big brute, but K'Moras is a powerful psionic. He telepathically probes all his crew for traitors. It's not a process I - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - approve of, but I can't deny it has results. K'Moras has been a privateer captain for over a decade, and not once has he been betrayed. And I know him well enough to know he's not a part of - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - this conspiracy. He's not exactly a shining beacon of moral behaviour, but there's no way he's wrapped up in this." Kayleigh@crystyl:"The situation must still be highly volatile to warrant bringing in additional support" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin nods, "I can't give you any more details on the developing situation outside. In short, I don't like what it's come to, but I trust K'Moras and his crew more than I can trust anyone - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - from Starfleet right now. So the Ferasans are here to protect you, and help me determine if there are any enemy moles inside our Annex. While I work with K'Moras to do that, I want you to be - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - ambassadors of a sort to the Ferasans who'll guard you and your fellow cadets. Make sure they know the privateers are here to help and prevent any cultural misunderstandings from arising." Kayleigh@crystyl:"We will do our best" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "Good. I'll see who K'Moras is assigning to guard duty and introduce you." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin steps back over to K'Moras, leaving the cadets to wait once again Kayleigh@crystyl looks to the others he walks off again, "Well, this has taken quite the unexpected turn" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Yeah...I wasn't expecting additional support like this! But I guess I can see the Professor's reasoning." Kayleigh@crystyl:"It is logical given the situation he describes. Only it raises my concern for the gravity of the situation that is not being revealed to us" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Me too...I guess we'll just have to work with the bits and pieces they're telling us." Kayleigh@crystyl:"And whatever we can keep figuring out for ourselves" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Maybe the Ferasans'll let more on. This could be a good chance to learn more, too!" Kayleigh@crystyl:"I am glad we are already thinking the same thing" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Let's see what we can figure out, then," she smiles — Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | A short while later, Professor H'Raarin approaches the cadets again, this time with a female Ferasan behind him, "This is P'Rishar. She'll be leading the guard force K'Moras is assigning to - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - the Annex." Kayleigh@crystyl nods, "A pleasure to meet you, I am Cadet Kayleigh. This is Cadet Tanglao, and T'Mer" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "So you are the kittens I am to protect. Are you all still going about your training, or all holed up in one place?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"We have all the cadets gathered up in the dormitory still" she glances to the Professor, "Given what we know - and what we don't - about the situation, it seemed prudent. And it should make your - Kayleigh@crystyl:- jobs easier with us all in one place" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar nods, "Indeed it should. Show me to where you are bunkering down. I will position our warriors to ensure you are well-defended." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Of course, it is just down here" she leads the way Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar and the Ferasan privateers follow along, examining their surroundings as they go Kayleigh@crystyl returns to the dorm and the sea of eager faces, "This is everyone. The area should be quite simple to secure from it's few access points" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The cadets look over curiously at the group of armed Ferasans. One of them asks, "Who are they?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"These are independent security enlisted by Professor H'Raarin on behalf of the Commendant. They have been come to provide protection for us" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kostenko: "We're relying on independent security to protect the Academy?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Shavinnia: "It makes sense, with all the infiltration going on. Can't trust our own security anymore, can we?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar: "True, but this all still seems very...unusual for Starfleet." Kayleigh@crystyl joins the group in the middle, "That would seem to be the Professor's assessment, yes" looks to Kerafar, lowering her tone, "That is also true Kerafar. Right now nobody is above suspicion, - Kayleigh@crystyl:- including our guards, and us. They may be here to protect us as we've been told. They may be here because they believe one of us is an infiltrator. The point is that nobody knows anything, so we - Kayleigh@crystyl:- can not allow ourselves to be swayed by strong emotions and paranoia right now" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar nods, "I understand. H'Raarin and the Commandant called these independant security personnel in, and I'll trust their judgement." Kayleigh@crystyl:"As must we all. But that does not mean we should become complacent either. This is our opportunity to learn more about the situation from our new guests, which is exactly what I intend to do" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Shavinnia smiles, "Good thinking. They probably know more about what's going on outside than we do in here." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Exactly. So whatever the situation really is; whatever their purpose here is, they know more than we do right now" she looks around for P'Rishar, heading over Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar is at one of the entrances, directing the Ferasan privateers to guard positions and patrol paths Kayleigh@crystyl:"P'Rishar, is everything in order for your team? The cadets here know the facility as well as anyone, so it might help for your people to tap some of that knowledge. That, and... we've all been - Kayleigh@crystyl:- cooped up here in the dark, so I'm sure you can appreciate many of us growing ancy and in need of focus" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar nods, "Yes, it is never a comfortable experience to be sitting idle in the middle of a situation. I will have my patrols speak to you, learn what they can of the routes they will be - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - walking. And if there are any enemies among you, as I have been warned may be a possibility, this could be a good way for us to locate them." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Since you are so forthcoming, then you will not be surprised that we also welcome the opportunity to screen you and your people for the same potential. Though none of us share your particular gift - Kayleigh@crystyl:- in that regard" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "I do not believe there are infiltrators among our crew with Captain K'Moras' thoroughness, but I cannot fault you for your caution. It is difficult to tell enemy from ally in this - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - uncertainty. After all, the situation is centred on one of your Starfleet's most important and powerful ships." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Which is a logical target, so no surprise in itself. This response though; your team coming in from outside to secure the annex, it is quite unusual and has a lot of people more high strung than - Kayleigh@crystyl:- they already were. So yes, caution will of course be exercised. However I remain hopeful that we can work together to learn the larger truth for everyone's benefit" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "Yes, relying upon privateers is not exactly common for Starfleet. Most of our work is for the Klingons- we are actually here on behalf of them. Sometimes, we receive work from - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - groups affiliated with the Federation such as border colonies, but not Starfleet. I suppose you must adapt to the situation to survive. After all, one of your top security leaders was revealed - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - to be affiliated with the infiltrators, that Andorian Commodore. I can see why H'Raarin would not trust even his own warriors." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Wait, you are here on behalf of the KDF? What interest would they have in securing a Starfleet academy annex?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "The KDF are the ones paying us. Their interest is not in securing your Academy, but the entire Sphere. We came here during the great battle and have been operating in the region - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - since then. It is your Professor H'Raarin who asked us to defend the Annex specifically, which still falls under our instructions to work with the Coalition and keep the Heart safe. So we are - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - protecting your interest specifically at this moment, but not at your expense." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I see, that does make sense. As does the decision of the Professor to bring you in given the implied compromise of Starfleet Security. Though it is still quite puzzling why there would be any - Kayleigh@crystyl:- attention here at the annex at all, when it is a ship which is - as you say - the centre of things" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "There are two reasons, as I understand it. Firstly, your Professor sees this as a good opportunity to weed out any infiltrators among his own. He cannot simply call us in to - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - scrutinize his warriors without justification. You Starfleet has rules, after all, and this situation is the perfect excuse. And the reason it is a perfect excuse is the second thing." Kayleigh@crystyl:"What is the second thing?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "The situation may be centred on a ship for now, but the Coalition is planning something. Something risky, which may put other areas of the Sphere in danger as well. So there is - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - a reason to call in reinforcements which satisfies your Academy leader here." Kayleigh@crystyl:"The Coalition making risky plans? Is this because of the infiltrator threat?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "Yes. I know only that it is a plan to counter the infiltrators, but not the details. I am not a member of Coalition leadership, and am not privy to such details." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Well, it is nice to be reminded at least that we are not the only ones in the dark" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "I do not like it either, but with an enemy like these infiltrators, I can understand why. Still prefer a straight fight. Much simpler that way." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Have you had any direct dealings with these infiltrations so far?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "Not yet. Aside from the battle, most of our work here has been dealing with raiders and illegal scavengers in old Horde territory. A few interesting fights, mostly just cleanup - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - work. We're not Romulans- we don't usually get involved in weeding out spies business." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Ah, yes I believe I know those scavangers" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "Really? I suppose it was only a matter of time before some started trying to take advantage of all the advanced technology here in the Heart." Kayleigh@crystyl:"That does remind me actually, I really must check in on their situation once all this has settled. I am hopeful that they will no longer be illegally scavanging here" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "I hope so, for their sake. It would be foolish of them to continue trying to scavenge here after the Coalition is aware of them." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Indeed. But then such foolishness does not seem to hamper these infiltrators so far" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar chuckles, "Then they're about to learn things the hard way, I suspect." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I know I am not the only one of my class who shares that sentiment" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris chimes in, "You're certainly not! I mean, giving themselves up peacefully would be preferable, but something tells me that's not likely to happen..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"The odds are... negligible" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "So teaching them a lesson is definitely the next best thing." — Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | In the dorms, some of the Ferasans are speaking to the cadets about the Annex layout. P'Rishar has gone back to planning and ordering her warriors around. Upon seeing Kayleigh free, Kerafar - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - makes his way up to her, "Uh, excuse me. Cadet Kayleigh?" Kayleigh@crystyl turns to him, "Yes Cadet Kerafar?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar: "We saw you coming here with the Ferasans and turned off the visual feed monitoring- do you want us to continue monitoring?" Kayleigh@crystyl hrms, "It would be beneficial. Though perhaps we should do so collaboratively with them as to avoid unwarranted confusion" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar nods, "The feeds could help them too, especially the internal ones. Do you want to bring it to their leader, or should I?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"I am happy to do so if you are not comfortable with speaking to them about it" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar: "You've been talking to them so far, so I think you're the logical choice for it, if I dare say so!" Kayleigh@crystyl perks a brow and then nods, "Very well, a most logical supposition" she turns and looks for P'Rishar Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar is speaking with two other Ferasans and turns as Kayleigh approaches, "Yes?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"P'Rishar, some of the cadets have an idea that could help your people with monitoring the lockdown here" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "And what does this idea entail?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"We can access internal security systems and monitor the areas around the annex from our consoles in here. It might be a bit of a stretch, but if you want them to I can see if they can manage to get- Kayleigh@crystyl:- something from outside, or external sensors too" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "We've got the Red Mane patrolling around the facility, so we shouldn't need external sensors. Not much I can do with the data anyways, if there's a threat on the outside, it's up to - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - the crew still on the ship. But internal security'll be useful to me in case hostiles make their way inside." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Alright then, as you say" she looks back to Kerafar with a nod, "Internal only, as before" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar nods back and taps on his console, "Internal feeds and data coming up." The consoles around the room flicker and begin to display the internal visual feeds again Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "Not bad. We could set up in here, turn this into an operations centre. If you don't mind." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I see no reason why not. After all, everyone is centralized here and more activity would do well to alleviate the tensions" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "As long as we aren't too intimidating for you," she smirks. "Our presence where you're gathered will better keep you protected, in case there is a problem. Seeing how these - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - infiltrators work so far, they're more likely to try and sneak in than mount a head-on assault. So it's best to keep you close." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Agreed, and the more closely we can monitor things outside this room, the better our chances of catching them if they do attempt anything" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar nods, "Most of my warriors will be standing guard or running patrols. Can we count on your people to help with the monitoring?" Kayleigh@crystyl nods, "Of course, see" looking around to see for herself as everyone busily returns to their monitoring Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar looks as well and gives a nod of approval with a slight smile, "Not bad. I suppose you are training to become Starfleet officers, so you're more impressive than the average kitten." Kayleigh@crystyl:"That is kind praise. But we are still - as you say - 'kittens' at the end of the day. Proficient in familiar tasks is one thing, but reacting to the unexpected is likely to be more of a challenge - Kayleigh@crystyl:- for us on the whole" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "That is why we are here. One thing we have in common with the unmodified Caitians is our loyalty. We fulfill our contracts, and we have been through many. The infiltrators will not - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - find your Academy an easy target now." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I still question why they would have in the first place, having already been subverted once here" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "I doubt they would, but your professors are probably playing it safe. And I cannot blame them. Who would not take precautions to protect their kittens?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Taking precautions is one thing, but your presence here suggests they are going beyond that still. And the Professor has all but confirmed that there is more going on already than the situation - Kayleigh@crystyl:- with one ship out there" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "Indeed. What that is, we will have to wait and see..." — Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Two hours pass after the arrival of the Ferasan privateers. P'Rishar and a few of her warriors remain in the dorms, managing security from here and occasionally looking over the visual feeds - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - and internal sensor data. The rest of the Ferasans have settled into guard positions and patrol routes, many of them visible from within the feeds. The cadets have likewise gotten used to - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - their presence, with some braver and more curious cadets conversing with the Ferasans in the dorms as there's nothing else they can do from in here Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | As she idly observes one of the feeds, P'Rishar is interrupted by a comm call and steps away. After a moment, she makes her way over to Kayleigh Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "You said you can get access to external feeds as well?" Kayleigh@crystyl turns to P'Rishar, "Well, not me personally. But yes, some of our class should be capable. Has something happened to your ship?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "No, but something is happening outside. You may be interested in observing, as it seems to be moving towards this side of the Sphere." Kayleigh@crystyl nods and heads over to Kerafar, "Kerafar, change of plans. New intel from our Ferasan friends indicates movement outside. Can you get the external feed and sensors back?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar nods, "Right away. I have access to them already, just need to put them on display..." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris and several other cadets step over to observe as well Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Several consoles soon change to display the external view from the Annex facility Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar: "There we go." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Excellent work" she looks baco ko P'Rishar, "We have the externals back if you are interested" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar nods and steps over as well, "It'll be easier to observe here than relying on updates from the Mane." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris points to one of the consoles, "Look, something's going on here." Kayleigh@crystyl watches with the others Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | There is a flash of light on the console, though it's not entirely clear what's going on. Kerafar taps and magnifies the view... Mariel Tanglao@anncaris ...and one of the shadowy ships comes into view, a different class than the ship that extracted Lieutenant Hall, but displaying the same effect and Starfleet-style design that it's - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - unquestionably an infiltrator vessel Mariel Tanglao@anncaris Sound FX | https://youtu.be/8DNO2eU_qkg Kayleigh@crystyl:"That appears to be an infiltrator ship. It has similarities to the one involved in the Challenger incident" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar nods, "Yes, it looks Starfleet but using some form of strange cloak, just like that one did." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar: "Profile certainly resembles Starfleet, but it doesn't quite fit any class in service that I know of..." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The other cadets watch silently as two Lupan raiders chase after the shadowy ship, firing disruptor cannons which simply phase through the ship, doing nothing to slow it down Kayleigh@crystyl:"Agreed. These are not Starfleet vessels, they simply appear as such" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The ship fires a beam, striking one raider and then the other, causing them both to lose power and halt their pursuit. Much further behind the two Lupan ships, a Nuhar can be seen trailing the - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - mysterious vessel. From its shape, it seems to be a Nuhar Watcher, but it is very far away, keeping its distance and not engaging Kayleigh@crystyl:"It would seem that the Coalition are at a loss as to how to handle this ship" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The shadowy ship seems to be heading towards the Annex. As it continues towards them, P'Rishar gets another comm, which she listens to with a strange look on her face Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "No, not quite. The Coalition has...some sort of plan. The Red Mane has been ordered not to engage." Kayleigh@crystyl looks to P'Rishar with a perked brow, and then back to the monitor, "If their plan is to shepherd that ship towards us, then it would appear to be working..." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "I am not sure what the plan is, but they only told our ship not to engage. We will still defend the facility if they set foot on here," she taps her comm. "All privateers, prepare - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - to repel boarders." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Through the screens displaying the internal feeds, all the Ferasan warriors can be seen drawing their weapons and moving to combat positions, picking ideal spots to take cover and some even - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - setting up ambushes, pincer attacks and laying down mines. These people are definitely professionals Kayleigh@crystyl tries to recall any emergency arms that she and the cadets can get access to Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kayleigh manages to get access to basic hand phasers, but that's about it, and they're the old model rather than the new, more pistol-shaped ones used by Starfleet post Battle of the Heart Kayleigh@crystyl figures it's better than nothing and goes about distributing all she can, prioritizing those with weapons training already Kayleigh@crystyl coordinates those armed into supporting positions inside the room before returning to monitor with the others Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kayleigh heads back just in time to hear Cadet Shavinnia say, "Look, it's changing course again!" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Indeed, the shadowy ship, which has reached a different facility in the same region of the Heart as the Annex, begins to turn towards the Sphere edge Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | An Iconian gateway opens between it and the Sphere surface, just like last time. This time however, it isn't a battleship that emerges, but four Iconian raiders and a large squadron of Iconian - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - drones. They open fire and begin swarming around the shadowy ship, once again doing nothing to it. The ship returns fire with antiproton bolts, taking out one raider and a number of drones as - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - it continues towards the Sphere edge without breaking pace Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "The plan doesn't appear to be working very well..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Rallying them in front of the Iconians is all well and good, but you still need to counter that phased cloak of theirs first" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Just as Kayleigh says this, the surviving raiders and drones suddenly break off. Behind the shadowy ship, a Regulator vessel pops into existence out of seemingly nowhere, emitting a burst - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - around itself. The burst encompasses the shadowy ship and the effect fades, revealing the true form of the ship beneath... Mariel Tanglao@anncaris FX | https://pwimages-a.akamaihd.net/arc/f7/6b/f76b744c0abe8d6758419c8e99aea08d1484181662.png Kayleigh@crystyl leans in, "That is definitely not a Starfleet design style I have ever encountered before... So this was their plan, distracting with the Iconian feint to slip the Regulators in on the flank with - Kayleigh@crystyl:-that countermeasure. An impressive gambit" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Three glowing torpedoes emit from the aft of the ship, striking the Regulator vessel. This time, the Regulators' shields flare up and actually deflect the attack. However, the Regulator vessel - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - doesn't stand and fight and instead seems to contort and disappear, leaving behind an effect like lightning streaks in its wake Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The infiltrator ship turns away from the Sphere surface, now unable to simply phase through the edge. It begins to open what seems to be a wormhole, but that is when the Nuhar Watcher strikes, - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - bombarding the area with pulses and forcing the wormhole shut before the ship can escape through it Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Red beams flash across the screen as the infiltrator vessel starts trading shots with the Watcher. The Watcher is outmatched, but the distinctive black form of the Relentless Hunter decloaks - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - to aid its fellow Nuhar, followed by Romulan and Klingon ships. Gateways open all around the infiltrator ship as the larger Iconian ships now come in, followed by Elachi and Regulator ships - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - flashing into existence. The infiltrator ship weathers an impressive barrage of fire but is clearly panicking now as it dodges and weaves through the overwhelming forces arrayed against it Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Despite being the size of a cruiser, it manages to flee the initial ambush, though the Elachi continue their pursuit, disappearing into the same lightning streaks and reappearing once again - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - beside the retreating foe to continue laying down fire and not giving them a chance to recover, though their attacks are more like mosquito bites to the powerful ship Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | However, the infiltrators have nowhere to run as escaping the initial ambush only drives it into a different group of Coalition ships, these ones predominantly Orion and Colonial Fleet. Though - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - equipped with weaker weapons than the Iconians and Nuhar, the compounded barrage on the infiltrator ship starts to take its toll. When one of the massive Lodzki flagships join in, the - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - enemy ship's shields finally buckle and shots begin to impact on its hull Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "Now this is more like it!" Kayleigh@crystyl:"I do hope they are taking care to disable that ship and not destroy it" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The infiltrator ship begins to make a dash for the nearest exit hatches, taking hits from all directions. Its hull seems to be slowly regenerating like a Borg ship's, allowing it to continue - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - going despite having taken enough hits to disable a modern Starfleet ship Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Before it reaches the exit hatch however, the four Regulator ships seen gathered by the cadets earlier spring into motion, closing in from two different sides of the infiltrator ship. Two more - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - Regulator ships pop into existence in front of and behind the infiltrators. The enemy ship appears to struggle to move and is soon held firmly in place Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Then, the infiltrator ship begins to glow. The Regulators break off immediately, followed by the other pursuing Coalition ships, save for the Relentless Hunter and several Iconian raiders. The - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - all-black Nuhar construct dashes in, firing its central red beam into the strut of the infiltrator ship's top left nacelle. The Iconian raiders do the same and they manage to burn through - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - the strut faster than it can regenerate. The Hunter locks two tractor beams on the severed nacelle and immediately turns to fall back, just in time as a flash of multiple colours erupt outward - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - from the infiltrator ship. Three Iconian raiders are caught in the flash and simply disappear, while one manages to make it out of range just in time alongside the Relentless Hunter and the - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - nacelle it cut off Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | When the colours fade away, the nacelle is all that is left of the infiltrator ship, with the rest gone, leaving no trace of debris Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar: "Must've been a form of self-destruct..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Well that is unfortunate, but at least there is something left to study" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar nods, "At least they didn't get away like last time, either. This should show these infiltrators that we can stand up to them." Kayleigh@crystyl:"It is indeed quite the decisive victory for the Coalition. But still, taking all that collective might to bring down one ship - and not easily at that - it is hardly sufficient to make these - Kayleigh@crystyl:- infiltrators to change their plans, I'm sure" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "Indeed. But at least we are making progress from the last encounter. And as you said, we have something to study and learn more about their capabilities from." Kayleigh@crystyl looks to Kerafar, "I trust those external sensors didn't detect any transporter activity around the time of that implosion?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar shakes his head, "The last transporter activity around the infiltrator ship was just before it changed directions towards the Sphere edge. I guess it wasn't heading towards the Annex, - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - but getting someone from somewhere else before it left the Sphere." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Maybe another infiltrator that's been exposed with everything going on..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Was it definitely taking someone up? Or did someone flee before it was destroyed..." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Kerafar: "According to our readings, a lifesign disappeared rather than appeared, so I'm pretty sure it's taking someone up. I'm sure the Coalition'll verify it more thoroughly, though." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Well, at least that means the crisis should be over now then" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar nods, tapping her comm again, "Warriors, stand down." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Across the internal feeds, the Ferasans stand down and begin disarming the mines and traps they laid down Kayleigh@crystyl:"I am glad your warriors did not have to test themselves today, though I hope it won't be too disappointing for them" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "I'm sure the news of this victory over the infiltrators will offset the lack of action enough. Besides, we are still being paid," she smirks Kayleigh@crystyl:"And though you did not get to prove it, I know having warriors of such prowess here to protect the cadets helped greatly in easing concerns" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar smiles, "Know that if the enemy did attempt to board this facility, we would have given them a fight to rival the one that brought down their ship." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Of that I have no doubt" — Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Another two hours pass after witnessing the battle through the external video feeds before the red lighting fades Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The announcer's voice comes through the intercomm once again, "Attention. The lockdown has been lifted. All cadets are still recommended to remain within the Academy facility. Communications - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - may be used freely. Classes remain cancelled for the day and will resume their regular schedule tomorrow." Kayleigh@crystyl looks around, "It would seem that is the end of it then" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "It seems so." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar walks off to take a comm again, returning to Kayleigh after a moment Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "We are being recalled to the Red Mane now that your lockdown has ended." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Of course, thank you again for today and letting us work with you" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "I have never worked with Starfleet kittens before. It has been an interesting experience, and you performed well. The Federation's future is in good hands." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar glances back towards the consoles still displaying external feeds, "Starfleet's present...that might need some cleaning up, though." Kayleigh@crystyl:"One thing that we certainly have proven here today in more than one instance is how vulnerable internal security actually is" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "More vulnerable than we'd like..." she looks over to T'Mer, "A good lesson for a security cadet though, I imagine!" Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer nods, "We believed that Heart security was sufficient. But clearly we underestimated the ingenuity of Starfleet youth" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Wait.../our/ ingenuity?" Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer turns to Mariel and nods, "Yes, it was one of our fellow cadets who got past the lockdown to establish a comms channel. And together, we all managed to break through and access visual feeds- Kayleigh@crystyl:- as well external sensors. The matter with the infiltrators goes beyond standard security protocols. And given how advanced this enemy is, I do not believe there are any sufficient protocols that - Kayleigh@crystyl:- protect our systems from them. Not yet at least" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Yeah...though we weren't accessing visual feeds to prove Sphere systems were inadequate! But you did get the right lesson out of it at least," she chuckles Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer: "Yes, exactly! Wait... I did? Huh" Kayleigh@crystyl:"It is a day of many firsts" she notes dryly. Was it a joke? Who knows Mariel Tanglao@anncaris glances at Kayleigh and decides she'll probably deny it again if she asked Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "Perhaps we shall meet again when you are out and about on your ships. I certainly intend to be alive and fighting until then." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I too will welcome the day when we can serve alongside you as such" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | P'Rishar: "I look forward to seeing you in action properly one day, kitten." She pats Kayleigh on the shoulder before gesturing to her warriors, who begin to follow her out Mariel Tanglao@anncaris looks to T'Mer again, "Does Professor H'Raarin usually call you kittens?" Kayleigh@crystyl | T'Mer shakes her head, "No, that is a term introduced by this group" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Must be a Ferasan thing..." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Perhaps the Professor simply favours a more professional form of address given his position here over us" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Or that! Anyways, sounds like there's no classes for the rest of the day. Any plans, or just taking this time to study?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"I am naturally curious about the aftermath of what we observed, though I am unsure if it is wise to pursue it so aggressively right now. Since we are here, I believe self study is the most logical - Kayleigh@crystyl:- use of what was already determined as class time anyway" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "Good call. They did say to stay in the Annex still, and I doubt we can learn anything more from in here. Already pretty lucky we got to see what was going on outside, seeing how big the - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - Sphere is!" Kayleigh@crystyl:"Indeed. Perhaps the Professor will look to check in before long to see how we fared with the Ferasans so we can take any change of plan from there" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Let's get some studying done, then!" She steps forward before glancing around, "Should we turn off the visual feeds now, or keep them on in case something else happens?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"With the situation settled I would recommend disabling them all before any else seems them" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods and looks around for Kerafar, "Let's get the visual feeds off. Prooobably shouldn't let the professors see we tapped into them." Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | The Bolian chuckles and nods, "Yes, that might be a good idea. I'll turn them off and cut off the access to them from these consoles." Kayleigh@crystyl:meanwhile, picks up her work and settles back in to studying like nothing ever happened Mariel Tanglao@anncaris takes a seat beside Kayleigh after the feeds are turned off. She picks up a PADD and reads for a few seconds, before looking over to Kayleigh Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"How are you able to focus so well after everything that happened? Must be Vulcan training..." Kayleigh@crystyl perks a brow, "The disruption is over, and no other action we take here right now will change anything that has already occurred" looking up from her PADD, "Do you then find it challenging in some - Kayleigh@crystyl:- way to resume normal duties following an unexpected event?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris nods, "I...guess it's leftover adrenaline, or something like that. Or maybe just curiosity..." Kayleigh@crystyl sets her PADD down and turns fully to Mariel, "In that case, I have no objection to engaging in post-event review if you believe it will alleviate your untamed biochemical reaction" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris chuckles, "That's a very Vulcan way to put it. But sure! If you have any thoughts on the matter you haven't already talked about, that is." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Only the lingering curiosity and desire to see it through to closure that was already mentioned. I am more curious right now however, on what it is that you find lingering on the topic" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I'm not sure. Just the whole matter that there's so many infiltrators right under our noses in Starfleet, I guess. We're growing wiser to them, but who knows how many others are still here, and - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- what they've already done?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"That is indeed cause for concern, but since we can do nothing about it beyond what already set in motion, it is illogical to allow emotions to linger on thoughts of things you can do nothing about" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I know it's illogical, but they still linger," she chuckles. "I don't think there's much logical about emotions, really." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Some might say they are two sides of the same coin. As for easing your emotions in this post-event period, I am afraid I may be of little assistance. Unless of course you wish to train in - Kayleigh@crystyl:- meditation to exercise better control over those emotions" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"I'm already learning a bit of control from the Chlasi. Not quite able to get my visions to trigger on demand yet, but..." she glances around before leaning in to whisper. "Remember how I saw that - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - vision of Cadet Miklos and Shavinnia?" Kayleigh@crystyl nods Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:"Well focusing on him got me a vision eventually. I had to stumble upon the right place when tailing him, and it took some tries, but it's something! Maybe instead of Academy work, I can work on - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris:- the focus techniques I'm learning from the Chlasi. That's kind of like meditation!" Kayleigh@crystyl:"And it is a focus on mental discipline which should serve at least some way to enacting control over the emotions currently distracting you" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris stands, "I'll go do that. Thank you Kay!" Kayleigh@crystyl turns back and retrieves her PADD, "It was no inconvenience. I hope your meditation proves fruitful" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | Later that day, Kayleigh is still studying in the dorm when the door slides open and Professor H'Raarin walks in, "Cadet Kayleigh. I see you're still here." Kayleigh@crystyl stands attentively, "Professor. Well... yes, was there somewhere else I was meant to be?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "No, I just thought you might've gone to learn what happened out there, or find some way to help, as you and your friends always seem eager to." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Of course, but since the crisis was averted we determined that the most fruitful thing would be to stay out of everybody's way, and that if our assistance was required then it would be sought" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin nods and smiles, "A smart decision. The situation is over, but there's still a lot of uncertainty in the aftermath. I'm told everything went smoothly with the Ferasan guards K'Moras - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - sent to watch you." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Yes Professor, I believe we established an amicable working rapport" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "I'm glad to hear that. I was worried there'd be some problems getting external contractors in here. I take it I have you to thank for smoothing things over?" Kayleigh@crystyl perks a brow, "As one of those you assigned to escort them back here, I contributed to the establishment of the setup, yes. I do not see it as my place to claim sole credit for - as you - Kayleigh@crystyl:- say - smoothing things over with them though. Everyone here played a part in that, and worked closely with the Ferasans the whole time" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin nods, "Think of it as a surprise lesson in working alongside new allies. Turns out there wasn't any direct danger to the Academy in the end, but it's always better to play it safe - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - when it comes to Security. For a moment there it looked like the threat out there was coming dangerously close to the Annex." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Indeed it did. There was a time briefly there when we prepared to face boarders. I have already logged my report including justification for my access code being used to access the emergency arms - Kayleigh@crystyl:- locker" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "I'll give it a read soon. It's been a busy day, as you well know. I'm sure you had very logical justification," he smirks slightly as he moves to the other side of the table to take - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - a seat. "How are you and the other cadets doing now?" Kayleigh@crystyl takes the movement as a cue to return to her own seat, "We are all unharmed and returning to normal routines now. I have observed some lingering anxiety in a number of the others though, including - Kayleigh@crystyl:- Mariel - Cadet Tanglao, that is. She is presently meditating in an effort to control this" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "That's only to be expected after going through a situation like this. It'll take some time before things fully get back to normal. What about you? Any lingering anxiety there?" Kayleigh@crystyl shakes her head, "No Professor, no anxiety. Though I will admit to a certain curiosity about what transpired and a desire to see it through. Unanswered questions are... inconvenient" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin nods, "I understand that all too well. As a security officer, it's never good when pieces of the puzzle are missing. You've done a good job today- it's only fair I tell you what I - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - know about what's going on." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I welcome any further involvement and understanding on the topic, thank you" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "It turns out Captain Dale of the Courageous and a few of his crew were infiltrators. The Courageous is back under our control now, but the infiltrators were extracted by an advanced - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - ship again. This time the Coalition was ready for it and had a plan of action." Kayleigh@crystyl:"I take this advanced ship was something like the one recorded here during the Challenger incident" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin nods, "Yes, it was. The Regulators managed to break through its temporal phasing. The Coalition had the ship trapped within the Sphere and engaged it. They wanted to capture it - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - intact, but they managed to self-destruct. We believe everyone on board is dead, but the Coalition was able to retrieve a piece of the ship for study." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Given the results of previous encounters, that is quite the victory for Coalition forces" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "It is, but not as much of one as we aimed for. We don't have anyone to question, but the piece of the ship we have should at least help us make the next confrontation a little more - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - even. There's a complication, though." Kayleigh@crystyl perks a brow, "A complication?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "The Courageous was the lead ship for Starfleet's defensive force here in the Heart. Captain Dale was apparently privy to the Admiral's plans. I don't know what they are, but we - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - believe there might be a threat to the Admiral." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Without wanting to overstep my mark in asking for details... what is the premise for this belief?" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "I don't know the details myself, either. Just that the Admiral is apparently up to something to try and counter the infiltration, and now the enemy knows about it. The Coalition's - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - putting next steps into action, but I'm only responsible for Annex security and teaching you cadets. I've not been told the Coalition's plans either, only what's relevant to my duty here and - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - what I've heard from my contacts in Starfleet Security." Kayleigh@crystyl:"It is certainly an intriguing situation, and the fact that this level of detail is now public knowledge too. However working only with what we know for ourselves here, there is no logical - Kayleigh@crystyl:- connection between the Courageous infiltration and these reported plans of the Admiral. If anything, one would expect overall Heart defense plans to have been the target of that infiltration. Then- Kayleigh@crystyl:- there is also the matter of how the infiltrators became exposed, since this poses potential for upgrading site security measures to help avoid further incidents" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "I think the target of infiltration was both. Captain Dale was in the inner circle of both Sphere defense efforts and DSEC. Both Starfleet and Coalition Security is looking into - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - changes, but from what we know so far, the exposure was largely due to increased vigilance after the news from DS9." Kayleigh@crystyl:"Understandable. As we had previously discussed, we were already seeing repercutions of that news rippling through things here. If I might venture a recommendation; there was the incident here with - Kayleigh@crystyl:- one of the cadets breaching the lockdown protocols and establishing external communications. Given her aptitude, she may be well positioned to present unorthodox solutions to strengthen said - Kayleigh@crystyl:- protocols" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "Thank you for the recommendation, Cadet. I'll see if there's anything she can do to help. Is there anything else you were curious about?" Kayleigh@crystyl:"This recovered technology is a natural point of curiosity, though not my field or expertise or place to request access to. This news you mention of a larger plot against the Admiral is very - Kayleigh@crystyl:- intriguing though, and further reinforces our previously expressed desires to do more to help. I believe that current circumstances do present unique opportunities, and the cadets as unique assets- Kayleigh@crystyl:- to offset those opportunities. But that is more in the vain of a 'left of the field' recommendation which I would be happy to summarize to you if desired" Mariel Tanglao@anncaris | H'Raarin: "I'll pass your recommendation on to Engineering. They took Cadet T'Pia in to help with the Coalition project when she was here, I think they'll be open to help from your other - Mariel Tanglao@anncaris - classmates. Thanks again for your help today, and all your suggestions. We'll make this Annex a safer place together going forward."
