NARRATIVE: On stardate 94051.1, the U.S.S. Lexington was entering into the Alpha-7192 Sector near the wreckage of starships Caelian, Damocles, and Gainsborough. As we were passing we monitored the debris field and discovered that an active ship was within. I ordered a complete stop and a minimization of all power signatures emitted by the Lexington as we observed the vessel with passive scans only. It was an old ship of a design favoured by the Maquis during their insurgency around the time of the Cardassian and Dominion conflicts. The vessel did not appear to notice us, though it was within our sensor range.
At this time, I contacted the U.S.S. Valley Forge, which I knew was in the region and investigating local pirate activity. I informed Captain Keelah and the other commanding officers present of the situation and voiced my suspicion that based on the Branded Lady’s threats against the Valley Forge’s SAR mission, this ship could be attempting to pick up the trail of the Gainsborough survivors, not knowing they were already found. Regardless, they were interfering with Starfleet properly, and all command personnel agreed or voiced no objection to arresting the individuals on the vessel.
Upon arrival, the Valley Forge and task force rendezvoused with the Lexington and stayed out of the raider’s hypothesized sensor range. Captain Vel devised an excellent plan to make use of an AWACS-equipped shuttlecraft to scan the scavenging vessel more closely. These scans were able to confirm that it was indeed the style of ship often used by the Maquis, though it was unlikely to have any affiliation with dissident groups. Two individuals were on board, one Orion-human hybrid and one Gorn. The vessel bore many modifications, in line with the Branded Lady’s vessels that Starfleet has previously encountered, and this one even made use of some Borg technology. Running the scan results through databases showed that the Orion Syndicate has a bounty on a ship matching its signature, meaning that we were probably dealing with known criminals.
The shuttle’s sensors also revealed that the raider was conducting scans of its own on the wreckage and also systematically retrieving and discarding pieces as if they were looking for something specific. The vessel possessed some weaponry, but nothing that could pose a significant risk to a Starfleet ship. However, we decided not to engage it directly as it was likely to flee or even self-destruct (as observed with other Branded Lady vessels) if it saw a Federation starship. We came up with a number of plans on how to approach the raider. Among them were the deployment of a boarding party onto the raider (which I advised against due to the unpredictability of the situation), the use of transporters to beam the occupants out, luring them into a trap with fighters, and a deflector pulse to disable their systems. It was also during this time that Captain Timoreev unveiled the presence of the U.S.S. Camelot, equipped with stealth systems and currently lurking near the raider.
Ultimately, we settled on utilizing another plan by Captain Vel in conjunction with an ambush by the Camelot. The U.S.S. Midway deployed three powered down Peregrine fighters, remotely controlled and configured to appear as debris. These were surrounded with tractor beam mines, intending to lure the raider into a false sense of security before immobilizing them. In the meantime, the Camelot slowly closed the distance until the moment the raider sprung the trap, then immediately beamed its occupants on board and deployed canisters of anaesthetic gas to neutralize anyone who may have escaped a transporter lock somehow. The raider managed to break free of the tractor beams by polarizing their hull, but the crew had already been secure by then.
Following the successful execution of this maneuver, the prisoners were disarmed and transferred to the brig of the Valley Forge, where they await questioning. The Lexington disabled the drifting raider’s power completely and I ordered the deployment of members of MACO Team 16 alongside personnel from the U.S.S. Nightingale to secure the raider and ensure that no dangerous technology was left behind. The raider was then taken into one of the U.S.S. Akagi’s hangars for storage once it was deemed safe.
RECOMMENDATIONS: The prisoners are of course to be questioned in order to determine the reasons for their meddling with the debris field. It is likely that they will be less than cooperative, which makes it imperative that we also search their ship for any signs of their intentions. Its sensor and navigation logs should be thoroughly examined along with any cargo it may be holding. As proposed by Captain Jager, the vessel should also be checked for illegal modifications, and any found should be removed and confiscated.
