The Latenter's search takes them to the headquarters of a Romulan crime cartel where they must intercept a Starfleet officer with connections to Commander Reyes of the Justicar.

Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | A small civilian ship zooms by the screen, dodging and weaving between phaser cannon shots. It returns fire with an aft disruptor beam, but several cannon shots land, tearing through its - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - shields and knocking out its beam. The pursuing vessel comes into view, a Starfleet Defiant-class escort Goto Yuzuki@anncaris FX | https://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/scans/other/defiant-firing.jpg Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | The civilian ship suddenly dives down and cuts engines, causing the Defiant to overshoot. As the Starfleet vessel zooms by, it activates its engines again and starts to turn away to make its - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - escape. Unfortunately, the nimble Defiant-class spins around quickly, cannons still firing and laying down a sweeping arc of fire Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | One of its bolts hits the target, sending it spinning out of control. The Starfleet escort continues to advance, though it slows down and ceases fire Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | As it moves close to the disabled civilian ship, it activates a tractor beam, halting its spin and holding it in place --- Goto Yuzuki@anncaris FX | Back on the Latenter, their search has still led to no results. Despite being returned to where they were before by the Everett, their search has once again brought them towards the Hobus - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - Sector as Ori's list of potential systems begins to thin out. Now, as they cruise under cloak near the edge of the sector, the senior staff gathers for a briefing Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"It's been a few weeks now, and we haven't made any significant progress, though our temporal expedition has shed a little more light into our quarry. But we might finally have a new lead." Mischa@crystyl:"Let's hear the details" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris nods over to Victoria Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Victoria: "As we all know, many of the ships around the Romulan border were redirected through the gateway. Right now there's only three Starfleet ships in the entirety of the Hobus Sector, - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - the USS Heron, a small scientific transport on a survey mission, the USS Zh'ratholr on standard patrol, and the USS Laffey," she waves her hand, bringing up the holo-projection of a - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - Defiant-class over the table. "The Laffey is attached to Deep Space Sixteen, in the Ponor Sector. The Hobus Sector is within their purview so their presence isn't unusual, not by itself that is. Goto Yuzuki@anncaris smiles, "But we wouldn't be SFI if we didn't see the underlying patterns." Mischa@crystyl smiles, "I do always like a good underlying pattern" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris stands, stepping over to the wall console, "The Laffey's official reason for being out here is to dismantle a smuggling cartel that's been bringing contraband into the Federation through the - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - Ponor Sector. But this isn't the Laffey's first outing. She's been operating out here very often in the past year, against this cartel and for other reasons. Most of these missions have been - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - led by one officer." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris taps on the console, bringing up a personnel file Goto Yuzuki@anncaris FX | https://www.theorderofmidnight.com/storybook/m/41760224/viewthread/33246912-alex-tarasenko Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"Lieutenant Commander Alexsandra Tarasenko, Security Chief of DS16. Academy year of 2401. The same class as our old friend Commander Reyes." Mischa@crystyl:"Quite the coincidence" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris nods, "The two took different postings after they graduated, but digging into old archives, I've found messages that indicate they kept in touch, most frequently through the Klingon War when - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - Reyes made the switch from comm specialist to security. Tarasenko, who's a career Security officer, seems to have given her a good deal of advice in that time. They communicated less often as - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - they advanced in rank, probably preoccupied with their duties as the situation grew more intense in the leadup to the Iconian War." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris taps the console, bringing up a photo of Reyes and Tarasenko together in a bar, both dressed in casual, off-duty clothing, "But they didn't drift apart entirely. This was taken in 2415, - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:- two months after the war's end in the bar owned by Angelina Reyes, Commander Reyes' mother. There's been sporadic communications between them in the years after as well, typical messages you - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - would expect from two old friends who knew each other back in their Academy days. Until the mutiny, of course." Mischa@crystyl:"Of course" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"There's been no record of any communication between the two after the mutiny, but after Commander Tarasenko was posted to DS16, there was a small conflict in this region between Alliance forces - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - and a group called the Romulan Legion, one of those factions that want to restore the glory days of the Star Empire. During that conflict, there were sightings of the Justicar, as well as - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:- allied forces coming across disabled or destroyed Legion ships with Starfleet weapon signatures on them, despite no vessel under Starfleet's command having engaged them." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Eirril: "We know they've been operating in a vigilante capacity in the region against pirates, warlords, the Star Empire and their supporters and splinter factions. We didn't think much of the - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - Justicar's involvement in the Legion conflict at first, it seemed perfectly in line with the other rumours we've been hearing. But in combination with the Laffey's expeditions out here after - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - the conflict and Commander Reyes' relationship with Commander Tarasenko, this might be something." Mischa@crystyl:"It is something at least. So where do we stand on tracking them down?" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Victoria: "The Laffey is operating under standard Starfleet protocols as an official SFC vessel. We have a fix on their position. The question is how you want to proceed with this." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris returns to her seat, "Should we try to grab their CO again like with the Verala?" Mischa@crystyl:"I think initially it could be prudent to covertly observe their activities" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris nods, "And if we see anything suspicious, we can proceed from there?" Mischa@crystyl:"Exactly, yes. We can make a judgement call once we have built up a picture of their current activity" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"Good idea. We'll make our way to the Laffey's position and tail them, see what they're up to. If we're lucky, they might lead us straight to the Justicar, but I doubt it'll ever be that easy. At - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - the very least we'll be able to determine what they're up to and we might be able to figure out if they're working for the Justicar crew." Mischa@crystyl:"Good, then we have a plan" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"I'll have the helm change course to make for the Laffey right away." --- T'Lana@anncaris | As the Latenter heads towards the Laffey's position, it moves into range of SFI border facilities, allowing the Latenter to get a direct line across the Jouret gateway T'Lana@anncaris | As expected, T'Lana answers the call from the Loki T'Lana@anncaris appears on Mischa's monitor, "Hello Commander. How goes the search?" Mischa@crystyl:"About as well as one generally expects when stabbing in the dark" T'Lana@anncaris nods, "Still no clear leads, then?" Mischa@crystyl:"Nothing conclusive, but that is not to say it has been quiet. How is life in the Sphere?" T'Lana@anncaris:"There have been some interesting occurrences. The Loki may be heading out from the Heart of Unity soon to provide reconnaissance and threat assessment on a new development." Mischa@crystyl:"A new development? Anything interesting?" T'Lana@anncaris:"Quite a few. According to Keelah's latest report, the Valley Forge is pregnant. And that is not an attempt at humour." Mischa@crystyl frowns a little at the screen, tapping it with her fingertip, "I'm sorry Lana, I think we're getting some subspace interference. For a moment there it sounded like you said the Valley Forge was - Mischa@crystyl:- pregnant!" she laughs at the absurdity T'Lana@anncaris nods, "That is indeed what I said. It is a most unusual circumstance, to say the least." Mischa@crystyl:"To say the least indeed... it certainly sounds intriguing, but hardly warranting the Loki's attention. Unless you're going to tell me that the Loki is the father..." T'Lana@anncaris:"No, our mission is regarding something else the Valley Forge encountered a few weeks earlier. They investigated an alien vessel that was rigged to travel to the future to locate a point where the - T'Lana@anncaris - Horde had been defeated. When the Valley Forge informed them that the Horde were gone, the rest of their people hiding in subspace emerged to rebuild." Mischa@crystyl:"A whole civilization hiding in subspace? That will certainly keep you busy for a while" T'Lana@anncaris:"What remains of it- over seven hundred starships and a spacedock facility. They seem to be the ancestors of the species we know as the Riders today." Mischa@crystyl:"Indeed? Potentially formidable and problematic then" T'Lana@anncaris:"Very. They are known as the Drenn Ecclesiarchy, a theocratic empire supposedly led by a member of their species who made contact with the galactic barrier and ascended to what they call living - T'Lana@anncaris - godhood. From what little the Lupan and Guardians know of this civilization, they were quite dangerous and cruel during the height of their power." Mischa@crystyl:"Most civilizations who rule others are described in such a way, but I see your point" T'Lana@anncaris nods, "Most of the information the Lupan and Guardians have obtained are second-hand accounts from the time and very likely biased, but observation of the civilization so far does confirm that - T'Lana@anncaris - they are militaristic. Fortunately, they respect the Coalition for defeating the Horde and demonstrate no sign of hostility towards us, at least for the time being." Mischa@crystyl:"I'm sure you'll find a way to keep them in check" T'Lana@anncaris:"The USS Megaris made second contact with the Drenn just a few days ago. Captain Hajeeth reports that the negotiations are proceeding amenably. So far, the Drenn have only asked for four star - T'Lana@anncaris - systems- the one they re-emerged in, their home system, and two others with no habitable planets located on the way between the two habitable worlds. A very reasonable demand, as considering - T'Lana@anncaris - their numbers, it will be some time before they need more than two habitable worlds. However, both the Megaris and Valley Forge also believe the Drenn are hiding something from us." Mischa@crystyl:"So you're off to find out what that is" T'Lana@anncaris nods, "The telepaths on the Valley Forge do not sense any powerful psionic presence, and the negotiation team of the Megaris thinks the Drenn may be concealing some details of their resettlement - T'Lana@anncaris - plan. Commodore Fox wishes to ensure they will not be causing issues for the Coalition as we also work to resettle the region." Mischa@crystyl:"Understandable" T'Lana@anncaris:"I should return to our departure preparations. I will forward you all the reports of note, should you desire more reading material while you conduct your mission." Mischa@crystyl:"It is always good to keep up to speed!" T'Lana@anncaris nods, "Good luck with your search, Mischa." Mischa@crystyl:"And you with your assessment Lana" she smiles --- Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Some time later, as the Latenter draws closer to the Laffey's position, Mischa is called onto the bridge Mischa@crystyl steps over and takes her seat, "What have we got?" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Victoria: "We've received the latest report from the Laffey. They've recently intercepted a smuggler's ship and apprehended the crew, but they're not returning to base yet. Commander Tarasenko - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - states that she's received a message from the head of the cartel and intends to stop their operation for good. Command sent a reply emphasizing that Starfleet has no official jurisdiction in - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - the sector and can only apprehend individuals or vessels that are wanted for crimes in Federation territory, but she assures them that no rules will be broken." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Hassan: "But a few will probably be bent. The Commander has a record of playing fast and loose with rules." Mischa@crystyl:"I'd expect no less from an associate of Reyes" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"From their trajectory, their current destination seems to be an abandoned mine in the sector. There's little official information on it other than the fact that it used to be a dilithium mine of - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - the Star Empire before it ran dry and was abandoned. I asked Eirril to look into it, and he was able to dig up more information from the organized crime side of things." Mischa@crystyl:"Could it be that Tarasenko is on to something then?" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"Either that, or she's a part of something. The Network's intel says that the mine is being used as the base of operations for the Nuvan Cartel headed by Nuvan, a former Tal Shiar operative turned - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - crime lord. The Cartel is most well-known for the production and smuggling of various illegal substances but they've expanded into all sorts of criminal activity." Mischa@crystyl:"For all their will - whatever the goal - they are but one ship so I don't imagine a heavy handed approach even if the report to SFC is accurate. This presents a number of potential avenues for us - Mischa@crystyl:- pursue, anything jumping out particularly to any of you?" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris nods, "Exactly why I think Tarasenko could be involved. As powerful as a Defiant is when compared with mercenary and pirate ships, she can't take out the entire operation alone. It seems like - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - taking out several of Nuvan's smuggling ships got his attention, and he made contact through the last ship they took down for negotiations, so the Laffey has an invite. But I can't see - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - anything coming out of these negotiations other than a trap, unless it's an excuse for Tarasenko to meet with Nuvan or perhaps someone else at his base." Mischa@crystyl | Ori: "So we need to get down there without being noticed. Either in hiding or disguise?" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris smiles, "I have an idea on that. Well, part of one, at least." Mischa@crystyl looks over with a little smile, turning to Yuzu, "She does learn fast doesn't she. What have you got?" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"Ensign Zerho. He might work for us now and hold Starfleet rank, but one of the reasons he's been so useful is because Commodore Fox captured him discreetly. As far as the rest of the galaxy knows, - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:- he's still a bounty hunter. According to Eirril, even the Network doesn't know he's SFI now. Zerho isn't one of those people who exclusively works alone, so he can get you in. The difficult part - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:- is that a ship will have to announce itself to the mine or land at one of its landing platforms to get inside. The mine itself is protected from transporters so we can't just discreetly beam in." Mischa@crystyl:"Could we fit Acey with same external holoprojectors we used to use on smaller ships? Coupled with the appropriate warp signature masking it shouldn't be too hard to make her look a little less - Mischa@crystyl:- reputable" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Daurant nods, "I can do that. I'll have it ready before we arrive." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"I suggest we board the station before the Laffey arrives, to appear less suspicious." Mischa@crystyl:"Agreed. Increase speed to get us there in good time, I want to find a nice parking spot" she smiles, clearly meaning to those familiar that she wants to have the Latenter nicely hidden away to - Mischa@crystyl:- observe everything before anyone of interest turns up Mischa@crystyl:"So we'll go down with Acey and Zerho. Not too big a party to avoid drawing attention" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Nethay nods, "Aye Commander, increasing speed." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"Good idea. Let's get some bounty hunting clothes," she grins Mischa@crystyl:"If we're going in as hunters, we need a reason to be there. See what Eirril can find of relevant interest" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"On it." Mischa@crystyl:"And while you're at it, tell him to sharpen our network up a bit. I'm disappointed that we didn't know about Zerho first" she grins playfully --- Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | After getting her bounty hunter getup, Mischa is called down to the Cell room Goto Yuzuki@anncaris awaits her there, just outside the door Mischa@crystyl approaches, "All set for another field trip then Yuzuchan?" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris nods and smiles, "Still looking as good as ever in your disguises I see." Mischa@crystyl grins, "I did think about going Orion for this one, but I fear the nuances would be lost" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris chuckles, "I considered something similar, but there's enough humans involved in the criminal world out here that we shouldn't draw much attention. Not as many as Romulans or Nausicaans, but not - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - entirely unheard of, either." Mischa@crystyl:"Well then, let's see what Eirril has got for us shall we" she smiles, heading inside Goto Yuzuki@anncaris follows in. Eirril turns from his work as they enter Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Eirril: "Welcome, Commanders." Mischa@crystyl:"Tell me you've got something for us Eirril" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Eirril: "More than one," he motions them closer. "You'll like this." Mischa@crystyl:"I'd better. You need to restore my faith in our Network after letting Zehro slip the net" she smirks Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Eirril: "Hey, it's not my fault SFI is so effective. I don't technically hold SFI rank anymore, remember? But you'll like this." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | He taps on his console, bringing up a list of bounties, all on the USS Justicar or Commander Reyes, "There's about a dozen bounties out for the Justicar and her captain, right? From the Star - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - Empire, Imperial splinter factions and various crime groups. The Nuvan Cartel had one out for them as well...until a few months ago, when they took it down. According to my sources, the Cartel - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - also issued an order to all its members to leave the Justicar alone during that time, supposedly because it was poking a Khellid nest and more trouble than it was worth. Sounds suspicious, - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - right?" Mischa@crystyl:"Almost too obvious to be a deception" she chuckles. "But then, Cartel's are never the most intelligent of people as a rule" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Eirril chuckles, "Not usually, no. But I've been looking into the Cartel's activity since then in case there's any patterns, and there have been a few changes. Before that, they were trying to - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - branch out into illegal weapons trade, mercenary work, all that. Around the time they took down the bounty, they've suddenly invested a lot more back into smuggling." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"They're going back to their roots. Maybe the Justicar scared them into getting out of more nefarious business?" Mischa@crystyl:"Or they enlisted them" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Eirril: "Either are...possible, but neither fit what we know perfectly, and that's the strange part. They haven't dropped any of the nefarious business, they've just stopped investing more - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:- into it and turned their attention to smuggling instead. Which would imply they haven't been scared off but enlisted, except the Justicar spent a good year and a half after they went rogue taking - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - down cartels like this. Completely burning them to the ground. Why would they suddenly decide to recruit this one?" Mischa@crystyl:"A valid question with numerous possible answers" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Eirril nods, "You'll have to get inside to find out more. Luckily, I've found a good bounty for that." He taps his console again, bringing up a bounty on an Orion female Mischa@crystyl looks up, "Damn, maybe I should have gone green..." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Eirril: "This is Midania, one of the last holdouts of the Orion Syndicate. Her cell has had a feud with the Nuvan Cartel since a deal gone wrong back in 2412. The Romulan crime lords generally - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - don't seem to be fans of her, so when the Klingons cut the Syndicate loose, they made an alliance and hit her hard. Midania's cell is all but gone, though she managed to escape and is believed - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - to be in hiding somewhere in this region. Nuvan has a fairly handsome bounty on her." Mischa@crystyl:"If we're coming to claim it, we'll need evidence" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Eirril taps his console again and it switches to a video feed of the same Orion in ragged clothes, cuffed behind a force field, "One of ours caught her last week. I asked him to hand her over - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - to the OSN, their bounty's not as high as the Cartels', but the favour it'll get us from an emerging power is more valuable than a little extra latinum. These Cartels come and go, but the way - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - things are looking, the OSN is here to stay. Anyways, the transfer hasn't been made yet, so we still have her. I can get you a live, undoctored feed to her holding cell. It was proof enough - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - for the Orions, so the Cartel should be satisfied too." Mischa@crystyl smiles, "Excellent!" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Eirril: "We'll have to move her afterwards so the Cartel don't actually get their hands on her, but it shouldn't be too much trouble. As long as you say you caught her independently and not - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - mention the Network, a little bait-and-switch shouldn't hurt our reputation in this sector, either." Mischa@crystyl:"Agreed. This will do nicely" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Eirril picks up a civilian-style PADD, handing it to Mischa, "I've connected this to the live feed, and included the location as well." Mischa@crystyl:"Thank you Eirril" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Eirril: "Good luck with the mission, Commander." Mischa@crystyl nods, heading out Goto Yuzuki@anncaris follows, "We should be at the mine in three hours. Daurant reports that Acey's emitters'll be ready by then." Mischa@crystyl:"And how long until show time after that?" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"The Laffey's expected forty-five to fifty minutes after we arrive." Mischa@crystyl:"Not long to enjoy the local amenities. We'll need to work fast" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris nods, "It's a short time frame, but Nethay's already going as quick as we can. We'll just have to make the most of it." Mischa@crystyl smiles, "I wasn't complaining, just noting how fun it will be!" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris grins as they make for the turbolift --- Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Three hours later, the Latenter arrives at the mine and the team proceeds inside Acey's Dart Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Acey: "External holoemitters are ready. Activating projection now." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | The exterior view of the Dart appears on one of the consoles, showing the new, more civilian look as it forms over the Dart's actual hull Mischa@crystyl:"I had a feeling it would be second nature to you, Acey" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Acey's avatar appears inside the shuttle with a smile, "I had plenty of practice with this one! We are all prepared for launch." Mischa@crystyl:"Then let's get underway" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Acey nods and the Dart lifts off, proceeding out of the shuttlebay and into the space beyond. They travel forward quietly for some time, having to emerge a distance from the mine as to not - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - suddenly appear from view out of the cloaked Latenter. Soon, they begin to near the moon where the abandoned mine base is located. A T'Varo warbird without Republic or Star Empire markings - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - flies nearby, and a second sits in orbit of the moon along with a number of other ships, but the two light warbirds are the only ones of Romulan military design Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"I'm seeing mostly lightly armed civilian ships, probably smuggling transports. There are a few larger and heavier ships. No registration records, probably pirates or mercenaries." Mischa@crystyl:"All as expected" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris nods, "None of the vessels are particularly suspicious. More so than any ship in a place like this would be, at least." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Acey: "Contacting the Cartel base now. They have accepted our identification and are clearing us to land." Mischa@crystyl:"Take us in" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | The Dart moves down towards the moon. There is no atmospheric entry as the moon possesses no atmosphere. As they approach, the glow of shield domes draw closer. The mining structures beneath - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - them eventually come into view as well. They pass through one of the shield bubbles, touching down at a landing pad with a few shuttles of various designs. Nearby, a second landing pad can be - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - seen, that one filled with Scorpion fighters Mischa@crystyl:"Alright, time to get to work. We don't have long before our target arrives so we need to get in there and become part of the furniture" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Zerho nods, "Let's hand in our bounty first, make sure everyone knows we have a reason to be here. Then we can stay around without looking suspicious- plenty of people come on business but - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - stay to refuel and relax for a while." Mischa@crystyl:"Exactly" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | The team disembarks on the landing platform. As they make their way across, a Corvallen steps up to them with a PADD Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Zerho: "What's this about?" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Corvallen: "Landing fee." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Zerho grunts, "Of course you would have a landing fee here," he takes the PADD and taps on it Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Corvallen: "What brings you to our base?" Mischa@crystyl:"Cashing in" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | The Corvallen nods, taking back the PADD as Zerho returns it. He stares at the Nausicaan a moment as he receives the PADD, "I've seen your face somewhere. You're a hunter, yeah? Turning in a - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - bounty?" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Zerho nods, "That's right." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Corvallen: "Huh. Busy day for that it looks like. The Golt Brothers just landed a few hours ago." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Zerho: "The Golts are here?" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Corvallen: "Competition?" Mischa@crystyl:"Hardly" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Zerho: "Not that I know of." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Corvallen: "Well if there's trouble, just don't make a mess in here or we'll have to get involved. I assume you haven't been here before?" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris shakes her head, "This is our first visit to this particular place." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Corvallen: "Go through this loading structure to the central complex and look for an office marked for the Foreman. You'll find one of the boss' lieutenants there to cash in your bounty." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Zerho nods in acknowledgement and moves on. Once they're out of earshot, he looks to Mischa and Yuzuki, "The Golt Brothers. We should steer clear of them." Mischa@crystyl:"What do you know about them?" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Zerho: "They're good, but the three of us can take the two of them. Combat skill's not the problem, though." Mischa@crystyl:"Of that I never had any doubt" she looks him up down with a chuckle, "So what is the problem?" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Zerho: "They're Beta Annari. They can smell your intentions. It's chemical-based, not telepathic, so our implants aren't of any help." Mischa@crystyl:"Then we shall simply have to ensure that we stay focused on our reason for being here" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Zerho nods and they make their way into the loading structure and through the mining complex. As expected in a place such as this, they pass by quite a diverse collection of individuals from - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - all sorts of species. Romulans and Corvallen seem to be the most heavily represented here, which is little surprise given the region, but there is everything from minor species of the region - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - to members of large powers, including at least one other human and a few Tellarites Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | A Ferengi runs up to the group as they navigate through the mining complex, "Hello, hello! You seem the strong and tough types, mercenaries if I have to guess. I have some quality wares, - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - weapons from across the quadrant, disruptors, phasers, blades, blunt trauma weapons, whatever you prefer, I'm sure I have something on offer!" Mischa@crystyl:"Quality merchandise is seldom offered as a bargain" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | The Ferengi trots alongside them as they walk, "Oh I can guarantee quality, I only sell the best-" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | The Ferengi is interrupted by a yell behind them, "That's the Ferengi rat who sold us the disruptors that kept overloading in our hands! Get him!" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Ferengi: "Oh dear. Time to go!" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | The Ferengi sprints down the hall as five Corvallen chase after him Mischa@crystyl eyerolls, shaking her head, "Those guys never do learn" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris chuckles, "At least it gives onlookers a good laugh." Mischa@crystyl:"If only more Ferengi went into standup comedy..." she smiles Goto Yuzuki@anncaris grins, "Maybe they'd make a better profit in that than running around being obsessed with making profit." Mischa@crystyl:"Perhaps there's an alternate universe out there somewhere where that is the reality and they entertain the galaxy with their hijinx!" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"I wish we got thrown into that universe and not the one where the Romulans took over everything..." Mischa@crystyl:"Not all alternate realities are so bad. Did I tell you about the one where I made out with an in-his-prime Jim Kirk?" she grins playfully Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"You did what?" Mischa@crystyl laughs, "You heard!" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"I suppose it's not the strangest thing I've heard, but...really?" Mischa@crystyl:"What can I say, it was an opportunity that presented itself. It would have been rude to the universe not to oblige" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"Why do I never get the nice realities..." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Zerho stops, motioning to a Romulan sign reading 'FOREMAN OFFICE.’ Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Zerho: "Looks like this is the place." Mischa@crystyl:"Time to cash in" she makes her way inside Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Inside the room, a Romulan woman sits behind a desk, with two hulking Beta Annari even bigger than Zerho. Both aliens turn to the newcomers, and the Romulan woman simply gives a nod, "It seems - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - I have others in line. Well, our business is about to conclude, anyways. A pleasure as always, gentlemen." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | The two reptilians nod, passing by either side of the trio as they make their way out. Both of them sniff as they pass by, but make no comment, exiting the room. Zerho follows them with his - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - gaze until the door slides closed behind them Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Romulan: "I am Tareka, one of Nuvan's lieutenants. What brings you here?" Mischa@crystyl also keeps an eye on them as they pass by, but remains solely focused on cashing in her bounty. She approaches the desk once they're gone, "Not the same thing as the Golt boys I'm sure. We're here - Mischa@crystyl:- to stake a claim" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Tareka: "Oh? What do you seek to stake a claim to?" Mischa@crystyl taps on her PADD and holds it up to show the feed of the prisoner Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Tareka looks at the PADD for a few seconds, "Is that Midania?" Mischa@crystyl:"Damned straight" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Tareka: "And this feed is live?" Mischa@crystyl:"Direct from her holding cell on my cruiser that's on it's way here. Unless I tell them you're no longer interested..." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Tareka: "Of course I am. Just let me verify that it's real," she reaches out for the PADD Mischa@crystyl hands it over Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Tareka sets the PADD on her desk, tapping on the console beside it for a few seconds before nodding, "Not bad. Did she put up a fight at all? She was one feisty susse'thrai when she had power." Mischa@crystyl:"yes, and 'had' being the operative word there. She's still feisty alright, but her bark's worse than her bite these days" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Tareka smirks, "I can pay you a quarter of the bounty now, and the remainder when she arrives." Mischa@crystyl:"And here I thought that big eared toad out in the hall selling knock off disruptors was the only comedian here" she holds her hand out expectantly for her PADD back Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Tareka hands the PADD over, "Half now, half then. I know you have her, but you still need to ensure she gets here safely. Something could happen on the way- a rival hunter seeking to seize - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - your prize, or perhaps an acquaintance come to her rescue." Mischa@crystyl:"I'm pretty sure she's fresh out of acquintances now, and if a rival hunter is stupid enough to make a move on me then all the more fun. But... yes, half now is acceptable. Assuming you have a - Mischa@crystyl:- drinking hole here where can ditch some of it while we wait" she smiles Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Tareka: "Of course we do. It's in this structure, used to be the miners' mess and the signs still label it as such." She taps on the console on her desk and it ejects a chip, which she hands - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - over to Mischa. "Here's your initial half. And...I will offer you a hefty bonus with your second payment, if you assist me with something." Mischa@crystyl takes the chip, weighing it as she weighs her options, "Intriguing... what exactly did you need assistance with?" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Tareka: "You will know what to do when it happens," she gives a smile. "That will be all for now." Mischa@crystyl eyes narrow slightly with suspicion but she nods, "We shall see then..." and turns to head back out Goto Yuzuki@anncaris and Zerho follows Mischa out as well Goto Yuzuki@anncaris asks once they are clear, "What do you think that was about?" Mischa@crystyl shakes her head, "No idea, but... it's not like we had our next job lined up after this one anyway. So as long as it comes to pass before our delivery then I'm all good with capitalizing on it" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris nods, "Let's go grab that drink as we wait." --- Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | The bar is a huge mess hall, clearly intended to house a large number of miners at once. Some of the benches are still arrayed throughout the hall, though different tables and chairs have been - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - placed to give the area a more casual look. Music is being broadcast through the speaker system, with one corner of the area converted into a makeshift dance floor. A balcony overlooks this - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - entire area which is set up with sofas as some sort of VIP lounge, which is currently empty Goto Yuzuki@anncaris Sound FX | https://youtu.be/gr4KNFvU_D0 Mischa@crystyl heads inside and makes her way over to the bar Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | A Debrune bartender steps over to serve the group, "Haven't seen you around here before. What'll it be?" Mischa@crystyl hrms, "We're celebrating, and killing time. What have you got that's suitable without killing us - or our taste buds?" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Debrune: "Human, right? We Romulanoids are better at telling apart Romulanoid species than Humanoid ones. All of you with smooth-heads and round ears look too similar to us," he chuckles Mischa@crystyl:"Well there's no fooling you. Human is right, except the big guy of course" she laughs Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Debrune: "I got just the thing, if you've got the latinum for it. It's an authentic Earth drink, or so I'm told, and even Nausicaans and Klingons enjoy it." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | The bartender turns around, pulling a bottle from the bar and setting it on the counter Goto Yuzuki@anncaris FX | https://thumbs.worthpoint.com/zoom/images2/1/0718/07/rarity-scotch-bottle-replica-star_1_916f732b648dd7258325801d0454b530.jpg Mischa@crystyl eyes the bottle and smiles, "That'll do nicely!" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris taps the isolinear chip from Tareka on a console on the bar. The bartender smiles, replicating three empty shot glasses and setting them on the counter, "Enjoy!" Mischa@crystyl pours them out, raising one to the bartender in thanks Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | The bartender nods in reply. He looks around the bar, and seeing that the others are occupied with their own conversations and drinks, turns back to Mischa, "So what brings you to our HQ?" Mischa@crystyl:"Just came to cash in on a certain ex-Syndicate holdout who kept slipping through your folks' fingers" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Debrune: "Still Syndicate holdouts in these parts, huh. I thought that big cooperative cleansing between the Romulan Cartels wiped them out, at least from our space. Well, good work and good - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - riddance." Mischa@crystyl:"Of course, once our ship turns up and completes the delivery we'll be on to the next job. But since we are indeed new here... what's the word on the ground?" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Debrune: "Well, there's a Starfleet ship coming in- they'll be here in a couple of minutes, actually. Word is that the boss invited them here to talk since they've been disrupting business. - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:- Bar's usually busier than this, but most fighters and mercs are arming up and getting ready in case the Feds try anything." Mischa@crystyl:"Can't say I blame them. Your boss's really playing nice with the Feds? Doesn't sound right to me" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Debrune: "I don't know what he's up to. I'm not privy to the Cartel's inner dealings. Been rumours circling around, but I really shouldn't mention those." Mischa@crystyl leans on the bar, "Except that you just did mention them. May as well elaborate now" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Debrune: "Well..." he glances across the bar, and seeing that there's no others nearby, he leans in, "The ones closer to the inner circle, the trusted guards and such, you know, I heard them - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - saying lately that the boss has been acting strange. That was a few months back, I haven't heard talk like that since, but..." Mischa@crystyl:"But...?" she leads him on, sliding a few slips of latinum across the bar Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | The bartender takes the slips, "I've been working with Romulans a long time. I might not be one myself, but I can see when they're up to something. Between the whispers about the boss' - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - behaviour and the activity I'm seeing, there's a power play going on. I don't know who's involved, they've been quiet and on guard about their plans, obviously. But I know someone's about to - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - try something." Mischa@crystyl:"See now, that is particularly interesting and sounds like the kind of reason why your boss might find sudden value in the presence of outsiders" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Debrune: "Pretty good explanation for why he'd invite Feds here. I suggest being on guard; it might just force the conspirators into action." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Debrune: "Needless to say, if that happens, things are about to get messy around here." Mischa@crystyl:"Messy is just another word for entertaining" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | The bartender grins, "Of course you hunters would find it fun. Well in that case, I hope it makes this a memorable enough visit for you to come back here again in the future." Mischa@crystyl:"I find myself drawn towards interesting company. And you Sir, are quite interesting" she smiles, "We'll just have to see how things play out now won't we" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | The bartender smiles back, but before he can reply the music stops as an announcement sounds from the speakers Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Announcement: "All guards, get to your posts. The Starfleet vessel has entered the system." Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | Bartender: "They're here. Time to see what happens." Mischa@crystyl:"We'll take a seat nearby" she nods, moving to a nearby table Goto Yuzuki@anncaris | The music resumes as a number of Romulan and Corvallen guards take up positions on the doors... Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | As Mischa's team waits in the bar, the Beta Annari Golt brothers step inside past the guards, ordering a drink from the Debrune bartender and also sitting down at a table Mischa@crystyl observes casually, more interested in seeing what goes down that the boss warned them to watch for Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Not long after them, a small group of Kzinti step inside, likewise taking a table. Zerho leans in to Mischa, "Looks like they're taking positions for something." Mischa@crystyl nods, "Whatever our friend over there felt was going to go down, it is here and now. Let's just see if this is what the boss wanted us to watch for and figure which side is in our best interests" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Then, the door behind the balcony opens and a fairly well-dressed Romulan man steps onto it, taking a seat on the sofa Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Yuzuki: "That's Nuvan." Mischa@crystyl glances up with a smirk, "Poised to enjoy the show it would seem" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | The door on the bar-level opens yet again. This time, Tareka, the Cartel lieutenant they spoke to earlier steps inside, followed by someone in a familiar Starfleet security uniform, with two - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - Corvallen mercenaries armed with rifles holding the rear of the group. Mischa quickly recognizes the officer as Commander Tarasenko Alex Tarasenko@anncaris observes the patrons as she passes through the bar, but doesn't stop. The Romulan woman leads her through another door, and a few seconds later, they both appear on the balcony area Alex Tarasenko@anncaris takes a seat on a sofa opposite Nuvan, while Tareka stands behind her boss Mischa@crystyl leans back lazily in her chair, taking a bored looking sip of her drink and leaning her head on one hand. Meanwhile subtly tweaking the signal range on her earpiece until she can hear those above Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Nuvan: "...all but ruined my business on the Federation border. Give me one reason I should not have you killed where you sit." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"You would not dare. That would give Starfleet the excuse it needs to completely wipe out your Cartel." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Nuvan: "Starfleet will have no evidence that we were responsible." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"We don't need evidence. We are not declaring war against some galactic power. No one will care if you are gone. You think the Star Empire or the Republic will shed any tears over your demise?" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Nuvan: "I am well aware of your internal bureaucracy. You have no authority in this sector. Your people will never approve a strike unless there was clear provocation." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Starfleet is not stupid. They know I am headed here. If I don't return, they will connect the pieces." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Nuvan: "We are not known for our logic. There is always a risk. You took that risk and came here anyways. So you truly are willing to negotiate, then?" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"That much your logic is right about." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Nuvan: "A surprise given your reputation, but very well. Tareka, leave us." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"I didn't say I came to negotiate with you." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris draws her phaser before Nuvan has a chance to react, pointing it directly at his chest. The door slides open and the two Corvallen guards rush in, but Tareka already has her disruptor in hand, - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - shooting and vapourizing both as they come in. The bar leaps to action as the Golt Brothers and the Kzinti all stand with weapons in hand, shooting the guards around them. Some of the guards - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - join in on the mercenaries' side, firing on their fellow guards. The ones in the bar are completely taken by surprise and killed before they even have a chance to return fire. The conspirator - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - guards and mercenaries move to cover all the entrances as sounds of shouts and disruptor fire echo through the halls beyond Mischa@crystyl upturns their table as soon as things kick off, so they have cover, "Well, the foreman did say it would be obvious" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Yuzuki nods, "Can't get more obvious than this!" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | On the balcony above, Nuvan slowly raises his arms, "Well-played, Commander. Using my own people against me, so Starfleet isn't technically involved." Mischa@crystyl:"If we side with Nuvan, it could give us an excuse to remove Tarasenko" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | The guards and mercs on the door open fire as guards loyal to Nuvan begin trying to break into the bar Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Yuzuki nods, "And we have an advantage being in here. We can take out Tareka's people from in here, or at least pin them between two sides." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Meanwhile, the conversation continues on the balcony Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Nuvan: "Is that why you haven't shot me yourself yet? Are you going to have Tareka do /all/ the dirty work for you?" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"I haven't shot you yet because I have questions. You took down the bounty on the Justicar. You've been holding clandestine meetings with Romulans and Remans no one recognizes. As rumour has it, - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:- the Justicar is working for people fitting their description." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Nuvan: "It is business, nothing more, nothing less." Mischa@crystyl:"Alright, enough hiding like Targ pups. You both ready?" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Tareka: "I don't believe you. Your decisions haven't been for the benefit of the Cartel in the last few months. You're up to something." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Yuzuki nods, raising her rifle, "On your mark, Mischa." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris continues on the balcony, "You know something about the Justicar. Give me anything, and I'll take you to a Federation prison. You know how comfortable these are. Otherwise I'll let Tareka have - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - you, and your own lieutenant well enough to know what that means." Mischa@crystyl takes aim, "Priority targets. Make it fast and clean" draws a quick focusing breath and fires on the first Gort brother Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Yuzuki aims and fires on the second brother, taking them both out before they can react. Zerho meanwhile opens fire with an automatic rifle, downing two of the Kzinti before the remaining - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - three turn and return fire while the rebel guards fend off the loyal ones still assaulting the entrance Mischa@crystyl turns her attention to flanking the rebel guards so the loyals can get in and even the odds more favourably Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | The others follow her lead and the bartender pulls up a disruptor from under the bar, helping out Mischa as he sees the rebels are being outmatched. Between them, the rebel guards are thinned - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - down enough for the loyal guards to break through. As they make short work of the rebels, Yuzuki stops firing and nudges Mischa, "Mischa, look!" She motions to the balcony Mischa@crystyl glances up Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | By the time Mischa looks over, Nuvan is no longer there. In his place stands the unmistakable, three-legged figure of an Undine. Both Commander Tarasenko and the betraying Tareka open fire, - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - but their pistols aren't enough to take down the powerful lifeform. It sends Tareka flying from the balcony with one powerful backhand and she hard on the level below, completely still and - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - clearly dead. It spins around to swing at Commander Tarasenko, who is able to dodge the blow while increasing her phaser's power. She raises the weapon to fire again but finds herself frozen - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - in place. The Undine doesn't strike her, but simply keeps its hand outstretched towards her in either some sort of telekinetic or telepathic assault Mischa@crystyl turns her attention to the Undine Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Yuzuki also turns to the Undine and opens fire. A bolt from her rifle hits the Undine on the side, staggering it and leaving a burn mark, but not killing it. It disrupts the Undine's hold on - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - Commander Tarasenko for a second and she manages to fire her pistol, leaving another mark on the Undine, but it recovers quickly. With a swipe of its hand that doesn't connect, it - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - telepathically knocks out the Starfleet security chief and scoops her up in one hand before she can collapse. The loyal guards have now also turned to the Undine and after a moment of - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - confusion as to where it came from, they open fire as well. It is hit by another shot, but turns and darts out of the balcony with Commander Tarasenko in hand Mischa@crystyl:"I want that Undine!" she stands to give chase Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Yuzuki and Zerho follow as well. Four of the loyal guards rush out first, going in front of Mischa as they were closer to the door. They seem to also be chasing after the Undine and likely - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - know where they're going as this is their base after all Mischa@crystyl follows, happy to let the fodder die first Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | The four guards manage to cut off the Undine as it proceeds down from the balcony. As they raise their rifles to fire at it, one of them suddenly screams, clutching his head with one hand. The - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - other three pause at the sudden noise, which turns out to be a mistake as the guard who screamed raises his rifle again and guns down the other three before turning to Mischa's team as they come Mischa@crystyl quickly fires to take out the controlled guard without breaking pace, having dialed her weapon right up since the Undine appeared as well she is quick to keep firing on it Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | The controlled guard is disintegrated by the high-power shot. The Undine tries to mentally assault Mischa's team, but the anti-Horde implant protects them. The Undine seems confused by this, - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - which gives the team time to land several more shots. The burns from the earlier hits seem to have regenerated already, but the Undine buckles under the concentrated fire, dropping Commander - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - Tarasenko, staggering several steps back before finally collapsing Mischa@crystyl:"Watch that thing!" she orders, moving to check on Tarasenko Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Yuzuki and Zerho move up to the Undine, weapons ready and pointed at it still Alex Tarasenko@anncaris appears to be alive and breathing, just unconscious Mischa@crystyl:";calls over, "Is it dead?" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Yuzuki takes out a tricorder, scanning the Undine before nodding, "It's dead. If our shots didn't kill it, it secreted a cellular toxin into its own bloodstream. It's not healing from this." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Zerho: "Killed itself rather than risk capture." Mischa@crystyl:"Unfortunate but not expected. We need to get Tarasenko back to the ship" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Yuzuki: "We have to return to Acey. Can't transport out of the environmental shield bubble." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | As she talks, Mischa hears footsteps echoing down the hall behind them Mischa@crystyl stands and turns to face them Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | A Romulan male steps into view, flanked by four more guards, two other Romulans and two Corvallen Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | The Romulan in the lead looks to the Undine, "Is that what I think it is?" Mischa@crystyl:"Nuvan" she nods, "I don't suppose he had a price out on himself...?" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Romulan: "That thing was Nuvan? Tareka was right...and I thought she was just hungry for power." Mischa@crystyl:"Tareka warned us that something was going to go down. Didn't expect it would be this" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Romulan: "I found her body down in the bar. I don't suppose that thing left the real Nuvan alive after replacing him?" Mischa@crystyl:"No idea. I don't exactly get the impression that this just happened. That thing has probably been posing as Nuvan for a while now - probably about the same amount of time you all started to notice - Mischa@crystyl:- odd behaviour" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | The Romulan nods, "Well unless the real Nuvan resurfaces, I'm in charge here." He looks to the unconscious Commander Tarasenko, "Is that the commander of the Starfleet ship?" Mischa@crystyl glances back and nods, "I'll take him as my compensation for taking that thing down" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Romulan: "If you like, as long as you can get that Defiant off us. I've got enough of a mess to deal with here without Starfleet being involved. Return her to them if you must, but if you - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - make sure they don't cause any trouble, I'll work up a payment for helping us expose that creature." Mischa@crystyl:"Sounds good to me. I can make sure that they leave you alone now, though sustaining that would require a little... more" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | The Romulan nods, "You'll get your pay." Mischa@crystyl shakes her head, "No, that's not what I'm talking about" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Romulan: "What other bonus are you looking after, then?" Mischa@crystyl:"All in good time, I am but a humble Eye after all. Our business is concluded, but another will be along in due course. If you want our help to keep Starfleet out of your hair, you'll do well to - Mischa@crystyl:- heed their advice" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | The Romulan widens his eyes slightly at the mention of Eye, but gives a curt nod, "I understand." Mischa@crystyl looks to Zehro, "Let's get our prize back to the ship" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Zerho slings his rifle back over his shoulder and lifts up the unconscious Commander Mischa@crystyl smiles to the new Cartel boss as she holsters her pistol, "Be seeing you" she winks, strolling back out Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | There are signs of fighting throughout the main building, with scorch marks along the bulkheads and a few bodies in the halls. Loyal guards are out in force but none of them give the team any - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - trouble. Once they make it to the loading structure, the signs of fighting are gone, though there are still guards standing at key junctions with weapons in hand. They make it back to Acey - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - without further incident, and her avatar activates to greet them inside Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Acey: "Welcome back. I see you have Commander Tarasenko. Does she require medical attention?" Mischa@crystyl:"Yes Acey, please assist us with her. Yuzu can handle piloting back to the Latenter" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Yuzuki nods, taking the helm as Zerho sets Commander Tarasenko down. Acey kneels down beside her, a medical tricorder appearing in her hand Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Acey: "She appears to have been sedated. I can produce a counter-agent to revive her. Shall I do that now, or once we return to the Latenter?" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | In the background, the Dart lifts off and begins leaving the shield dome Mischa@crystyl kneels with Acey, "I don't mean to second guess your ability to multitask. It just makes sense to me to have you focused on the priority when lesser matters can be shared" she smiles with - Mischa@crystyl:- reassurance, "Just see to any injuries for now. We'll keep her under until we're back on board" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Acey nods, "On it, Commander." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | The Dart soon ascends into orbit, moving past the smuggler and mercenary ships as well as the Laffey back towards the Latenter. The trip goes calmly, and soon they are back on board --- Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Upon returning to the Latenter, Commander Tarasenko is taken to sickbay Mischa@crystyl arrives a short while later, having changed back into her uniform, "How is our patient?" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Buena stands beside the bed, "She's in good condition. There were a few bruises which Acey already treated. The Undine administered a substance that's keeping her unconscious for as long as - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - it's present, but Acey already formulated the counter-agent so it was just a matter of replicating it," she holds up a hypo. "We can revive her whenever you like." Mischa@crystyl nods, "Proceed" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Buena injects the hypo on the Commander's neck before setting it aside. A few seconds pass, then she begins to stir Alex Tarasenko@anncaris blinks after a few more seconds as she slowly opens her eyes Mischa@crystyl sets a reassuring hand on her shoulder, "Easy Commander. Those Undine pack quite the punch" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris nods, "That they do. I didn't go in there expecting an Undine, otherwise I would've packed something tougher too." Mischa@crystyl:"I don't think anyone expected Nuvan to be an Undine. What I would like to know though, is if Reyes knows or not..." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"You and me both," she looks around the sickbay, then slowly sits up, staring at Mischa. "This isn't the Laffey's sickbay. And you're not Doctor Yang." Mischa@crystyl smiles, "Good of you to finally notice. Nuvan's sedative must finally be wearing off. But speaking of the Laffey, if you're feeling up to it we should take a walk" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris swings her legs over the side of the bed, "I've been worse. I can walk." Mischa@crystyl:"Then please, join me" she leads the way out Alex Tarasenko@anncaris follows, a little unstable at first but quickly finding her footing. Mischa@crystyl lets Tarasenko get her bearings, "To answer your unasked question, you are on board the USS Latenter" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Latenter? Doesn't sound familiar to me. It's not one of the other two Starfleet ships in this sector, unless I've been out for a long time." Mischa@crystyl:"Not long at all. So out of curiosity, what do you think the only other Starfleet vessels are in this sector?" she asks with a curious tone Alex Tarasenko@anncaris thinks for a moment, "USS Heron and USS Zhol...Zharathir? The Armitage-class, named for an ancient Andorian general, I believe." Mischa@crystyl keeps a casual pace as they stroll down the halls, "Both SFC vessels of course. Your purview does not extend beyond that reporting structure" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"You're...Starfleet Intelligence, then?" Mischa@crystyl smiles, "Very good. But you, Commander, are most certainly not" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"How do I know this isn't a Romulan trick? It's quite a coincidence to have an Intelligence vessel that happens to be here at the same time," she steps beside Mischa, taking a closer look at her Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"I saw you down in the base. And you just happened to be investigating the same place I was?" Mischa@crystyl pauses, turning to face her with an entertained expression, "Not the same place. The same people" she brushes her hair back behind her ear, "See, perfectly round" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"That could be cosmetically altered. Romulans are rather proud of them, but they're not beyond hiding them if it benefits their schemes. So you want to find Sierra as well?" Mischa@crystyl:"Yes. You see, unlike you it is actually my job to investigate the likes of Reyes and the Justicar. Which begs the question as to why you have been acting so autonomously with the Laffey in your own- Mischa@crystyl:- pursuit of that investigation" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"If you're really Intelligence, you must have full access to my records and files." Mischa@crystyl:"Yes, yes, we know all about your close history with Reyes. But records and files don't speak of the heart or the gut, I have a feeling that yours are telling you something your head doesn't want to- Mischa@crystyl:- hear when it comes to the Justicar" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"I know her. She wouldn't betray Starfleet, not of her own will. You've seen her record as well- she's Earthborn, always dreamed of becoming a captain like the great legends of Starfleet. She has - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - no reason to go rogue. She must be under mind control, or replaced by an Undine like Nuvan apparently was." Mischa@crystyl:"The thought had crossed my mind... but we can not jump to conclusions. We both want the same thing, Commander - that much us clear. Therefore I believe it is only prudent for us to combine our - Mischa@crystyl:- resources and work together to solve this little mystery" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris nods, "If you really are Intel. I assume your ship is cloaked near the base somewhere?" Mischa@crystyl smiles, leading them into her ready room… Mischa@crystyl ...where the Laffey can be seen outside the window, still latched on to the smuggler vessel Mischa@crystyl:"You could say that. Tea?" she offers with an air of nonchalance Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Sure. If you wanted to poison me, you wouldn't have woken me," she smirks slightly as she takes a seat Mischa@crystyl:"If I had wanted to do you any harm, I would have simply left you down there for the Romulans to use to barter back their ship" she chuckles, replicating some tea and joining her Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"What happened down there with the Undine?" Mischa@crystyl:"It tried to run off with you, likely to make an escape and replace you. We stopped it, and it took it's own life rather than submit to questioning" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris nods, "And you're wondering whether Sierra knew Nuvan was an Undine, or if she was in the dark about it as well." Mischa@crystyl:"Somehow I suspect she is not an Undine, though the question does linger. But first things first, in the spirit of our newfound cooperation I need you to return the favour from our saving your life" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"What do you need me to do? You seem pretty safe under cloak over here." Mischa@crystyl:"I need you contact the Laffey and have them release that ship" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris nods and taps her combadge, "Tarasenko to Laffey. There have been some developments. It may be longer before I return. Release the smuggling vessel back to the Cartel for now." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris FX | Outside the window, the Laffey does indeed release the ship Mischa@crystyl smiles, "Thank you. And that 'for now' may end up having to be extended somewhat" she chuckles Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"I can deal with that when I return. That was for maintaining your cover or something, I assume?" Mischa@crystyl:"Or something" she nods, "Consider it a long term investment in our little venture here. Don't worry, we'll still be keeping them on a leash. Just one that they aren't so aware of" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Good. Even without whatever the Justicar is up to, this Cartel has been a nuisance along this stretch of the border." Mischa@crystyl sips her tea, "Now as for the Justicar, why don't you start at the beginning with what led you down this path of investigation?" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"You've heard that the Justicar was involved in the whole Legion conflict, I assume?" Mischa@crystyl nods, "Of course" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"That was when I realized the Justicar was active in this region. I wanted to find them then, but of course we had more pressing matters on our hands at the time. I kept an ear out for any - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - information through the conflict. It was after the Romulan Legion was defeated, when we were cleaning up the remnants, that I managed to obtain some intel." Mischa@crystyl:"Music to my ears" she smiles, sipping her tea Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"It was from one of the members of the Hidden Hand- the Legion's makeshift Tal Shair, essentially. She didn't provide me anything directly, but she let slip that the Justicar was working with a - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - group they call the Shadow Guard. I couldn't get more details out of her, other than the usual Legion rhetoric and insults. One of those was useful though, something about corrupting the - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - proper order with Remans in positions of power despite it being a Romulan faction." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"So I looked through records of the Legion conflict for a third Romulan party, other than the Republic and the Legion. I found some footage of Remans and Romulans dressed in an unfamiliar uniform, - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:- purple and black, very Reman-style. No one recognized the uniform and they weren't surfacing anywhere, so my search hit a wall for some time." Mischa@crystyl:"No surprise. But you got a breakthrough?" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris nods, "My contact in the Qowat Milat informed me that one of her sisters apprehended a pirate of the Nuvan Cartel who surrendered all the information he had in exchange for his life. He said - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:- that Nuvan travelled on his ship once to a secret rendezvous in the Bassen Rift where he met with a Romulan wearing a Reman-style uniform. He didn't recognize the uniform or the Romulan, but he - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - thought the Romulan was Tal Shiar or ex-Tal Shiar from the way he presented himself. So I cracked down on the Nuvan Cartel." Mischa@crystyl:"That same strange uniform..." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Yes. Every Cartel member I caught never admitted to seeing those uniforms, but there was a clear sentiment that their boss was up to something. Eventually, I captured one of Tareka's - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:- co-conspirators. I let him go and he put me in contact with Tareka. She had seen people in these uniforms, but despite being Nuvan's top lieutenant, even she had no clue who they were. I - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - made a deal with her- I cannot help her conspiracy directly, of course, but she set up people loyal to Nuvan on smuggling runs and provided me with intel on these ships. I arrested them legally - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - for possession and smuggling of contraband and thinned out Nuvan's support." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"That got his attention and as expected, he invited me here to his base. That's when Tareka made her move. We were supposed to take over, capture Nuvan and interrogate him to learn more about these - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - uniformed people he's been meeting with. We didn't expect him to be Undine." Mischa@crystyl:"I don't think anybody did. So what was Tareka's angle, just a power play?" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"More or less. She thought Nuvan's recent business strategy wasn't very good, but she certainly didn't want to get rid of him out of some altruistic desire to help the Cartel. She wanted to make - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - more profit and power for herself. Tareka did promise that the Cartel would stop smuggling the worst of contraband into Federation space and focus on more harmless goods. I have no idea if she - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - intended to keep that, but it doesn't matter now. Even if everything had gone to plan, I'd deal with her when she became a problem. She'd need time to consolidate her power anyways, which - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:- would mean less trouble from this Cartel at least for a short while. So either way, good for us." Mischa@crystyl:"A prudent strategy. It is also reasonable to assume that the recent changes in the cartel's activity are connected to all of this" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris nods, "Tareka told me that the Cartel was refocusing on smuggling, especially on the Federation border. That suggests Nuvan might be helping these Shadow Guard smuggle something into the - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - Federation. I was hoping to find out what." Mischa@crystyl:"Perhaps we still can" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"What're you thinking?" Mischa@crystyl:"Well, Tareka might be gone but her next in line has already stepped up. He knows the Laffey is here, but not the Latenter. And he is awaiting further instructions" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"From who?" Mischa@crystyl:"From his perceived new masters" she grins Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"How did you pull that off? No, forget I asked. This is probably one of your trade secrets, isn't it..." Mischa@crystyl:"Something like that. Suffice to say, we still have an in. And it is with a lower ranked serving lieutenant who did not expect or plan to be in charge any time soon. He will welcome our guidance and- Mischa@crystyl:- instruction, so perhaps we can use that to find out about your smuggled goods and - with luck - our next lead" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris smiles, "A perfect opportunity. Do you need anything from me or my people to pull it off?" Mischa@crystyl:"You know these people better than us still, that knowledge could come in handy if you or one of your delegates wishes to remain here for a while and consult" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris nods, "I'll stay here. I want to get to the bottom of this as much as you do." Mischa@crystyl smiles, "I had a feeling you would. Best see to arrangements for your ship and get them clear then. I can have someone join them to enable secure communications if desired" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Sounds good. I'll get to it...unless the consoles on your ship are too classified for me to use?" Mischa@crystyl:"Not... /all/ of them" she smiles, "My XO can set you up" she reaches over, tapping the intercom behind her, "Yuzuchan, you can come in now" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Yuzuki steps inside, "Need me to show our visitor around?" Mischa@crystyl:"Yes please, I assume you heard all so you understand her imminent needs" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Yuzuki nods, "Come with me." She turns to lead the way out as Tarasenko stands and follows --- NPC@annpc#557 | Not long after her talk with Commander Tarasenko, Eirril calls Mischa down to the Network Cell room as Yuzuki shows their guest around Mischa@crystyl strolls in, "What have you got for me, Eirril?" NPC@annpc#557 | Eirril: "A question and...something of interest that raises more questions." Mischa@crystyl frowns a little, "That's a lot of questions. I prefer answers..." with a faux pout NPC@annpc#557 | Eirril: "I know, and I'm doing my best. But at this stage, the pieces of the puzzle just can't fit together. A Starfleet crew gone rogue is already unusual. Working with a Romulan group - NPC@annpc#557 - against their own people more so, but at least we had theories, some ways to rationalize it. Then we learn that they were disappearing members across the Romulan Republic, using future - NPC@annpc#557 - technology, and now Undine? What /are/ we dealing with here, Commander?" Mischa@crystyl chuckles, "That is one question that is on everyone's lips, including my own" NPC@annpc#557 | Eirril chuckles, "That wasn't the question I meant, by the way, that's just me musing. I feel like we're missing some crucial piece here, something that helps us make sense of all this. I was - NPC@annpc#557 - doing some digging while you were off playing bounty hunter, and I found something. As I said, it just raises more questions, but it's something." Mischa@crystyl:"Go on..." NPC@annpc#557 | Eirril taps his console, bringing up the list of bounties on the Justicar again, "The highest bounty is being offered by the Hadrian Syndicate, another Romulan crime group operating out of the nearby Vendor - NPC@annpc#557 - sector, specifically the Hadrian system. We have sources in that group and one of them informed me that the Syndicate is only responsible for a quarter of the payment. Apparently, the bounty - NPC@annpc#557 - was put up in the Hadrian Syndicate's name, but at the request of the Kaleb Interstellar Shipping Company, which is putting up the bulk of the payment." Mischa@crystyl:"A corporation? What's their beef with the Justicar?" NPC@annpc#557 | Eirril: "That's because it's a front. The Network learned about it a few years back when the old Scryer was planning his vendetta against the Federation. KISC is a shell company controlled by - NPC@annpc#557 - Section 31." Mischa@crystyl:"So... a recruited SFI operative eludes you, but a S31 shell company is old news?" she teases NPC@annpc#557 | Eirril: "It's easier to see bigger pieces. One man might slip through the net on occasion, though. You're never going to let that go, are you..." Mischa@crystyl grins, "One day maybe. So now the question is; what is S31 up to, especially when they should know we're working on this" NPC@annpc#557 | Eirril: "Well the bounty was put up before we were working on this. I just didn't dig into it deep enough to know who was behind it, so we figured it was just another bounty. After seeing - NPC@annpc#557 - Nuvan dropping the bounty though, I decided to look further into them and found this. I don't know what S31 is up to, but the bounty is dead or alive, as long as there's proof. S31 really - NPC@annpc#557:- doesn't like the Justicar." Mischa@crystyl:"Then it's time for me to a little digging of my own" NPC@annpc#557 | Eirril: "You're talking about looking into what the Nuvan Cartel knows?" Mischa@crystyl:"No, I'm talking about a bear with a stick. A black coat wearing bear that makes me look competition to Keelah as Federation poster girl" NPC@annpc#557 | Eirril smirks, "You wouldn't look too bad on a poster, Commander." Mischa@crystyl:"Don't start!" she chuckles, wagging her finger, "If you find anything else out I'll be in my ready room" heads off to go poke a bear... --- Mischa@crystyl steps into her ready room, "Computer; incognito protocols - Alpha-one clearance, voiceprint: Leveson-Scott, Mischa. Commander USS Latenter" NPC@annpc#557 | Computer: "Clearance recognized." Mischa@crystyl taps at her console, "Open a subspace channel on this frequency, and direct at these spatial coordinates" she taps away as she talks Mischa@crystyl | Computer: "Channel open" Mischa@crystyl leans back in her chair, "I spy with my little eye... something dressed in... black" Mischa@crystyl | ...silence Mischa@crystyl stands, moving to make herself a tea Mischa@crystyl:"Oh come now, admit it; you at least snickered at that" Mischa@crystyl | ...silence Mischa@crystyl takes the replicated drink and sips, "You know who I am, so if you're half as clever as you like to think you are, you know I'm not going stop" Mischa@crystyl | ...silence Mischa@crystyl sighs, sitting back down, "Don't say I didn't warn you..." Mischa@crystyl clears her throat and begins to sing, terribly out of tune, "#The hiiiills are aliiiiive with the sound of muuuusiiiiiiiiiiic..." Mischa@crystyl glances at the monitor, "No? Then perhaps a little Klingon opera..." Mischa@crystyl ahems, preparing to make the most shrill sound she can produce from the bottom of her gut... NPC@annpc#557 | A voice comes from the monitor: "That's enough." Mischa@crystyl:"Aww, and here I was so looking forward to rehearsing my Klingon operatics" NPC@annpc#557 | A figure dressed in black comes into view on the monitor, "We can't speak long. We shouldn't even be talking, but I take it you've found something that couldn't wait." Mischa@crystyl:"Yes, you've been getting lax it seems. But at least you're not playing the usual semantics as to pretend you are not who I know you are, so thank you for that" NPC@annpc#557 | Figure: "As I said- we shouldn't talk for longer than we have to. So what is it that is so urgent?" Mischa@crystyl:"The fact that you are treading on my toes. Why is your shell backing 3/4 of a DoA on the Justicar?" NPC@annpc#557 | Figure: "One moment." The screen goes dark again, and a few seconds later, the figure reappears. "Not my shell. If you know who we are, you know how compartmentalized we are. This is not my - NPC@annpc#557 - work, and it's not the first thing that's been done behind my back." Mischa@crystyl:"I assumed as much, unfortunately your compartment is one that I know how to reach. I need to find whoever is running KISC" NPC@annpc#557 | Figure: "/I/ will look into this. Continue seeking the Justicar itself. Perform your mission as ordered. Do not let those behind this suspect anything is wrong." Mischa@crystyl 's eyes narrow slightly, "This is bigger than either of us. And you are already on to it aren't you?" NPC@annpc#557 | Figure: "Yes. Something has been happening since your battle in the Sphere, and I don't mean the psionics. My attempts to investigate have been stonewalled by everyone from the Klingons to - NPC@annpc#557:- members of my own organization. Listen to me very carefully. Your mission...ot what it see-...elligence, Comman...there is some...inside...the entire...-ay be compromi..." NPC@annpc#557 | Figure: "We're...time...-ust no one..." The transmission cuts completely Mischa@crystyl sips her tea, staring at the now blank screen for a moment, "Ta-ta for now then" --- Mischa@crystyl following her conversation with the ghost, goes for a walk and decides to check in on their new guest. Chiming the door upon arrival Alex Tarasenko@anncaris calls out, "Come in." Mischa@crystyl steps in, "Commander, settling in well?" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris nods, "Your ship's not a typical Starfleet cruiser, but I've been working out of a Defiant frequently as of late. We don't have many amenities either, and much less space." Mischa@crystyl:"Well I'm glad we can at least offer a little breathing room" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Certainly very welcome after a long trip on the Laffey. It'll be some time before I make it back to DS16." Mischa@crystyl:"That is your usual posting then?" she asks casually, leaning against the table Alex Tarasenko@anncaris nods, "The Laffey has been attached to the station since the Legion conflict. Like the original Defiant was with DS9." Mischa@crystyl smiles, "Indeed? You're quite the way from home now though" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Came out here in hopes of finding the Justicar and what happened with Sierra. I didn't know you were on them too, but it was probably classified." Mischa@crystyl:"Naturally. Still, must have taken some persuading to let Command release you from the station for this" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"The Nuvan Cartel was ramping up their smuggling on our border and causing issues. Of course, Tareka letting me know where to catch ships helped, but the volume of Cartel members we arrested around - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - the station made for a convincing argument." Mischa@crystyl:"So your official mission out here was solely to deal with the Cartel, nothing to do with the Justicar" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Yes, Command wouldn't even authorize someone with no connection to Sierra to search for the Justicar after the reports of their involvement during the Legion conflict. They sent a ship to look for - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - her after the Justicar first went rogue, but found no trace of them, and the Justicar didn't even have a cloak at the time. Has Intelligence been searching this entire time?" Mischa@crystyl:"Not directly, though I can not say how long they have been monitoring the situation" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"It's been two years since they've gone rogue. Something must have prompted you to search for them now." Mischa@crystyl:"But as I said, I do not know details of activity previous to our own. For all I know, we simply came here to relieve another asset who was hitting dead ends" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Figures you would keep information even from yourselves," she chuckles. "You said earlier you have a way into the Nuvan base still?" Mischa@crystyl nods, "Yes, before we got you out of there I took the liberty of laying the foundation of a new order for them. They are awaiting the arrival of an... advisor, you might say" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Good. I have an idea- I don't know if it will work or not, but we'll probably need someone on the inside to check." Mischa@crystyl:"I'm glad to hear it. This is that local knowledge I was hoping you would bring to the table" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"We know Nuvan was meeting with the Shadow Guard at designated points. If we can keep the information of the Undine's exposure from spreading, we might be able to fool them into another rendezvous - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - in the future. But it will depend on how they communicate. If it's solely during the rendezvous then we can't do anything with the Undine dead, but I find it likely that the impostor Nuvan had - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - at least some way to contact them from the base, in case it needed to contact them outside of a set time." Mischa@crystyl:"I suspect the Cartel's new boss will be eager to establish himself and prove worthy of his new role. He will want to dig up everything he can on Nuvan's operations, and will expect our advisor to - Mischa@crystyl:- be capable of helping him figure that out. It is a favourable position" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris nods, "If your advisor can find a way to communicate with the Shadow Guard, we can pretend to be Nuvan- pretend to be the Undine pretending to be Nuvan, that is, and set up a rendezvous to lure - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - in their people. It may not be an option, but it's worth looking into." Mischa@crystyl:"And that is exactly what I intend to do. My only regret is that I've already shown my facedown there, so I don't get to play the role this time" she chuckles Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"They know me as well. I assume you have someone on your crew you can send down?" Mischa@crystyl:"Plenty to choose from. The difficulty is in deciding who" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"I'll let you decide that, it's your people. Keep me updated on what you find." Mischa@crystyl:"Don't worry, you'll have a front row seat" she smiles, "Well, I should leave you to your settling in for now" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris nods, "Thanks for the rescue, Commander. And letting me in on your op." Mischa@crystyl:"We are Starfleet Intelligence, not mythical ghosts like 'Section 31'" she jokes, ironically. "Contrary to popular belief we are not all cloak and dagger about everything, just more secure. I am - Mischa@crystyl:- sure you are aware of the growing collaboration with SFC. Why I wouldn't be surprised if you had a liaison office back at your station even" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Says the one with a cloaking device," she smirks. "We did after the Legion conflict broke out. But I haven't worked with a dedicated SFI cruiser before." Mischa@crystyl:"These ships are rare. Since SFC covers fleet operations in general there is little requirement for SFI to operate any. But there are certain functions which can not be effectively operated from any- Mischa@crystyl:- standard SFC class vessel. That is where ships like the Latenter come in" Mischa@crystyl smiles, "Would it surprise you to know that I used to serve at an intel office on a frontier starbase like DS16? For many years I worked as part of a SFI team out of DS13 and even did a few tours - Mischa@crystyl:- as XO of aa SFC command ship" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Really? And here I thought you served on ships like this all your career." Mischa@crystyl:"Really! I was one of the first into the command level exchange program, but I believe it has grown in popularity since then" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Was that how you ended up in command of this ship? Because you had command experience?" Mischa@crystyl:"Though the big boss never admitted it outright, I do believe that I was put into that program to gain broader command experience ahead of taking the reigns here, yes" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"A pretty good plan. So is only the senior staff and select specialist Intelligence? I've seen other officers with the usual department colours. You must have regular engineers and such as well." Mischa@crystyl:"We do yes, but all are actually SFI personnel. Some are exchange or transfer officers, some started out with SFI. You see when it comes down it, we're really not so different for the most part" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Like when Intelligence tried to recruit Sierra many years ago." Mischa@crystyl nods, "Yes, sometimes strong candidates are identified and presented with the opportunity. My tactical officer is one such example in fact, and that went with giving her a field commission as well" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"A field commission? Was she enlisted before?" Mischa@crystyl:"Not exactly. She represented a non-aligned faction who became established allies at the Battle of the Heart. She also has certain extenuating circumstances which would negate any benefit to her - Mischa@crystyl:- attending an academy" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Extenuating circumstances? Sounds like she has quite a story. I'll see if I can catch her off-duty while I'm here." Mischa@crystyl:"Quite a story it is too. Ensign Orianni is her name. Small, young, human, and infinitely more innocent looking than she has any right to" she chuckles, "You won't miss her" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris chuckles, "I'll keep my eyes out. Give your first officer my thanks for showing me around, as well. And good luck with your people 'advising' the Cartel," she grins Mischa@crystyl stands with a smile, "I will be sure to pass on your gratitude. You'll be informed as soon as we are ready to move" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"I'll be ready when you are." Mischa@crystyl heads back out, leaving her to her own devices --- Goto Yuzuki@anncaris stands from the command chair as Mischa returns from checking in on Commander Tarasenko Mischa@crystyl strolls over, "How are things going up here?" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"Activity seems to have quieted down. We can't scan past the shield domes, but comms activity shows no further signs of fighting after we left. We still have to send someone else down there, right?" Mischa@crystyl nods, "Yes, we will need someone capable of effectively imitating a Scryer Network operative, and who hasn't already been down there" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"They'll return with us once we have what we want, I assume? You can always deploy someone actually from the Network if we want to maintain a long-term influence on the Cartel." Mischa@crystyl:"I haven't settled on a decision yet, I wanted to get your thoughts on it first" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"Well, my best selections are people we're going to need on the ship, so I'd suggest a temporary deployment now to get what we need. Then Eirril can reroute someone to take over so we have control - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - of the Cartel going forward. We can always say we're sending in a specialist to deal with the aftermath of the power transition before our more permanent attache is freed up from their current - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - work to set up with the Cartel." Mischa@crystyl smiles and nods, "Agreed. We can make them earn a sustained presence. So, any thoughts on who gets the honours since both you and I have already been down there?" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris:"Eirril himself is an easy choice. He is a Network operative, so that takes care of the imitating part," she chuckles. "Someone will have to fill in for him at the cell room while he's gone, but - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - I think you've worked with him long enough to know how it all works, and I can manage the bridge while you're busy. Alternatively, Subcommander Nikki is my other selection. The Romulans might - Goto Yuzuki@anncaris - respect a fellow Romulan more, and she'll be familiar working with her own people and other species commonly found in their territory." Mischa@crystyl hrms, "Nikki does give the right presence, but she is not so familiar with this particular side of the business. I think Eirril will do well down there, and it's about time I got a bit more hands - Mischa@crystyl:- on with the Scryer role" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris smirks, "You're still eager to make sure another Zerho doesn't slip through the net, aren't you?" Mischa@crystyl:"It doesn't hurt to let the minions know that I'm watching on occasion" she smiles innocently Goto Yuzuki@anncaris chuckles, "Victoria and I will keep things running here on the bridge and let you know if there're any developments, then." Mischa@crystyl:"Thank you. I'll go give Eirril the good news then!" Goto Yuzuki@anncaris smiles, "I'm sure he'll enjoy a little time in the field." --- Alex Tarasenko@anncaris sits at a table with a drink in hand, conversing with a Security ensign of the Latenter Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Ensign: "So what brings you out here? I thought you would have been among those sent through the gateway to help with the battle in the Heart." Rianni@crystyl strolls in, heading for a replicator Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Bad decisions. I'm not exactly a favourite with Command right now." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Ensign: "You mean the Starbase 84 incident? But they promoted you back up for the whole Legion business, didn't they?" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"I suppose I could have asked for a transfer. But I wanted to stay at DS16 after hearing about the Justicar being active." Rianni@crystyl conveniently takes a seat behind the stranger, quietly enjoying a bowl ice cream Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | The Ensign waves over to Ori not long after she sits down, "Hello Ori! Come, join us!" Rianni@crystyl reluctantly stands and turns with a bright smile, "Hello Sh'raatros!" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Ensign Sh'raatros: "Have you met our new guest yet?" Rianni@crystyl shakes her head, looking to Alex, "No. You do not wear the uniform of this ship" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"I'm not Intelligence personnel." She offers her hand to Ori, "Commander Alex Tarasenko. Rianni@crystyl:"CO of the Defiant class Laffney. It is unexpected to find you in the Latenter's mess hall" she takes the hand as she sets, setting her bowl down with the other, "I am Ensign Orianni" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Your CO took me on board after the Undine incapacitated me. She also mentioned you earlier." Rianni@crystyl:"She did? I will admit to being curious as to the context" she tastes a big spoonful of her ice cream, eyes widening, "Mmm-... oh-" grasping her temple, "... oww! she looks at the bowl in disgust, - Rianni@crystyl:- "Why would anyone do this to themselves?!" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Ensign Sh'raatros chuckles, "You're supposed to eat it slowly, Ori. If you're not Andorian, that is," she smirks Alex Tarasenko@anncaris chuckles as well, "She said something about you being recruited under special circumstances." Rianni@crystyl shakes her head, "No, my template was Human. I was not aware of this genetic defect being so inherent to the species..." she pokes cautiously at the ice cream Rianni@crystyl looks to Alex, "So the context was my recruitment? A curious topic for a visitor. Unless she is planning to recruit you, but that does not follow as you already have your own command..." she rubs - Rianni@crystyl:- her temple again, "...I think my brain must still be partially frozen" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Don't worry, it's temporary. And I was asking about the personnel under her command and mentioned Intelligences' attempts to recruit Sierra. Though the Laffey isn't technically my command. I'm in - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - command of it now, but it's attached to DS16. My official posting is security chief on that station." Rianni@crystyl:"Hm, I believe you are correct. Still, what a curious thing to consider a delicacy that has the scope to completely incapacitate a person temporarily. I wonder if anyone has ever tried to weaponize - Rianni@crystyl:- this..." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"The Breen use cryo weaponry. And alcohol can incapacitate you temporarily as well, but many civilizations have it," she takes a sip of her drink and examines Ori more closely. "You look human, and - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - your commander said you're human, but you're not familiar with our culture?" Rianni@crystyl:"Oh, I am Human!" she chirps, "...technically. I was created by a species called the Junayd as a cultural observer. Though I have lived among other Humans for some years now, there are still many - Rianni@crystyl:- experiences I have yet to, um, experience for myself" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"A cultural observer?" Rianni@crystyl nods, "Yes, it is the Creators' method of assessing other civilizations as potential candidates for making first contact with" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"So you were created to live among us and evaluate us?" Rianni@crystyl:"Exactly, yes. The Creators learned long ago that civilizations rarely present their true selves during blind contact with alien species. The Azedi were an extreme case that ended up nearly - Rianni@crystyl:- destroying them, and so they built on their genetic engineering knowledge to create the Observers; so we could become a member of a target society and learn about them as one of their own. I was - Rianni@crystyl:- particularly fortunate because my template was a cadet at the time, so I was based at a centre of learning for it too!" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Your template? So you are cloned from someone?" Rianni@crystyl:"Yes, the now LT Rianni Tierno from the Valley Forge. One of the reasons I chose to accept the transfer here was because it could easily get... awkward with us both on the same ship" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"So these are the unusual circumstances the Commander mentioned? With you serving on the Valley Forge first before transferring to Intelligence?" Rianni@crystyl:"Perhaps. Perhaps she simply referred to my nature as an Observer" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Or maybe both. She mentioned you forgoing Academy training. Was this because your template was a cadet and you have access to her memories somehow?" Rianni@crystyl:"Yes, memory access is an integral component to an Observer's integration. So the two years I spent observing the Federation, I also spent attending the academy in her stead. When she was returned, - Rianni@crystyl:- she picked up where I left off using our shared memory. In coming here, I believe that time - coupled with my field experience since then - was attributed to the field commission" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Ensign Sh'raatros: "Not to mention the abilities your creators gave you, like your infiltration talent and combat skill, which are beyond anything taught at the Academy, even SFI field - Alex Tarasenko@anncaris - operative training." Rianni@crystyl nods, "Yes, but don't forget that is also somewhat owing to my genetic superiority" she remarks plainly why cautiously trying the ice cream. Superiorly Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Yet you are still susceptible to the effects of ice cream?" Rianni@crystyl:"A flaw in the species..." she decides Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Sh'raatros chuckles, "You studied tactics at the Academy, right? Hence the red stripe." Rianni@crystyl nods, "Yes, Rianni was a tactical cadet and so I had a natural inclination to follow that trend. We have both benefited from the capabilities of the other in that regard" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Sh'raatros: "You must not have heard of the Commander in tactical studies, then. She's usually studied in security officer training. Well, in recent years, at least." Rianni@crystyl:"Is that so? I do not recall, but perhaps that was a different course" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris | Sh'raatros nods, "Commander Tarasenko here is one of the most decorated security officers of our time." Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Don't get started...I did my duty and that's all. In our field of work, it's easier to get recognition during times of conflict. That's not something to celebrate." Rianni@crystyl:"That is very true. But nonetheless, recognition of your contributions is important. With such a record, it is even more surprising that you did not get sent to the Battle of the Heart" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"As I told Ensign Sh'raatros, Command and I don't have the best relationship. I do better in times of conflict than I do keeping the peace." Rianni@crystyl:"That could also be why the Commander mentioned me then, as I believe I can relate to that position" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Is that so?" Rianni@crystyl nods, "Yes, it goes back to when I betrayed the Creators and revealed my presence to Starfleet at the station I was posted to. The Creators didn't want me to do so, and actually wanted to recall - Rianni@crystyl:- and decommission me. But Starfleet was entering tentative relations with the Azedi just like the Creators once did, and so I broke my cover to warn them. Then they executed me for being an alien - Rianni@crystyl:- spy. It sort of went downhill from there" she notes, nomming more ice cream now she's got the hang of it Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Wait...they executed you? How are you here now?" Rianni@crystyl:"Technically I am a second generation. It is a rare thing for an Observer to be repurposed, but with the volatile situation surrounding the Creators relations with Starfleet at the time I was - Rianni@crystyl:- recreated to serve as a diplomatic liaison. But then the template was returned, and those relations could not recover from Starfleet's volatile leadership and so I became an oddity among the Junayd; Rianni@crystyl:- an Observer with nothing to observe, and already beyond decommissioning. So you see, I know how it feels to not be in Starfleet's good books too!" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"I...think I am in slightly better books. Fortunately for me, because I do not have a clone." Rianni@crystyl:"Neither do I since the template was returned. The Creators can not reconstruct Observers once a template is removed" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris nods, "So there cannot be any more versions of you, then?" Rianni@crystyl shakes her head, "Nope! Not of Junayd creation at least. Though as Captain Keelah took great pleasure in pointing out, the universe seems to have something of a sense of humour when it comes to - Rianni@crystyl:- different versions of us. Or, well, Rianni really I suppose and I am but one version. There have been encounters with versions of us from different times and alternate realities" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"Running into versions of people from other realities and time periods aren't unheard of, but it occurs especially often to you?" Rianni@crystyl:"There have been an unusual number of instances compared to the average, especially counting myself as one such instance too" Alex Tarasenko@anncaris:"I'm surprised someone from Daystrom hasn't taken you in for study already..." she chuckles
