BIOGRAPHICAL HIGHLIGHTS
The youngest of four siblings, and only daughter born to a humble agricultural family in the northern Russian Oblast of Arkhangelsk; Natalya spent her youth learning to coax life out of harsh environment. This spurred a growing fascination with the sciences and when she came of age, family and friends alike from her home village in the Bolshezemelskaya Tundra presented Natalya with a communally collected savings to help pay for her transport and enlistment in Starfleet. Though lacking the formal education or sponsorship required to join the Academy, Natalya was able to enlist as a crewman owing to her working knowledge of practical science applications. This led to her being posted on DS9 where she worked to aid the horticultural and agricultural reconstruction efforts on Bajor.
Following her conduct in a number of engagements during the Iconian conflict, where Natalya displayed a broader skillset through emergency actions in covering for other staff and officers; Natalya earned herself a posting to the newly commissioned exploration vessel - USS Dawnstar - as a general research assistant. It was during her time here that senior officers came to identify her potential in spite of the humble beginnings to her career, and so began to nurture her talent with special project assignments. Natalya conducted a series of research projects - building her repertoire - with one in particular gaining recognition from the senior staff in which she hypothesized that a large computer in constant advanced operation - such as that of a starship like the Dawnstar - would invariable develop unique subroutines and algorithms as it is subjected to varying stresses as the nature of frontier exploration. Natalya's paper theorized that by anticipating this digital growth and nurturing it, much as she was taught to nurture growing life on the farm; that the eventual quirks and oddities a computer would develop could in fact be turned to advantages and improvements in processing response times, simply by controlling how the computer is interfaced with. Or in short; being polite and friendly to the computer making it more helpful as it 'grows' in this manner. The research did not yield any definitive results, though has yet to be discounted owing largely to the extremely long term requirement for gathering supporting evidence.
In recognition of Natalya's professional development; in early 2417 she was promoted to Petty Officer (2nd Class) - a proud achievement that was celebrated with family and friends during her first return home since enlisting. Initially assigned for a return to DS9 following her promotion; increases to hostile action in the region forced command to reconsider and so she was instead assigned to the USS Saturn in a project support role.
