The Saganami line of Super dreadnoughts are the largest warships fielded by the Terran Empire since the days of Emperor Philippa Georgiou. The First of her line was finished construction in 2415 and was to be named the Saganami after Lord Eddard Saganami, the designer of the vessel. Lord Saganami was unfortunately killed during an Alliance bombing, and the project was taken over by Admiral Sakkhet and his right hand, Captain Alistair Nimitz. The Saganami construction site was moved into the Zenas Expanse in early 2400s and long with the first ten hulls. When Admiral Sakkhet died as the result of a heart attack, Captain Nimitz became the project overseer.
As Project overseer Captain Nimitz made several changes to the design, adding more armor as well as packing in as many weapons possible, he also got his hands upon the design for the Romulan Scimitar battlecloak, which allows the Saganami to engage weapons while under cloak. He also made changes to the class system management, which feature a DNA lockout, meaning only the Captain can make the ship work, which acts as a preventive measure to dissuade crewmen from advancing the ranks.
As the Saganami neared completion, Captain Nimitz was transferred to the 38th Battlefleet to take command of the Battlestation Argo as well as oversee the finial construction process. However due to stupidity from an ambitious uprising Admiral, Captain Nimitz was removed from command and sentenced to death upon the completion of the vessel. Nimitz however managed to hijack the Saganami from spacedock after lying about the status of her progress.
After stealing the Saganami, all records of her activity has been classified by the order of the Imperial Inquisitors. The Saganami changed command from Captain Nimitz to Captain Saul Williams after besting Nimitz in hand to hand combat following the Saganami's ambush of the I.S.S. Akagi.
Following the death of Captain Nimitz, Captain Williams was granted special authorization to rename the Saganami into the Akagi. Captain Williams enjoyed early success with his new command, destroying a Cardassian Hutet Super-Dreadnought. He was soon dispatched on a seven month mission behind enemy lines, where he claimed responsibility for the destruction of a Cardassian shipyard, two Klingon Regent Negh'Var types and a number of Alliance listening posts.
When the 38th Battlefleet attacked and took the Alliance world of Tzenketh, Captain Williams was rewarded with the assignment to command the occupation force. The following Saganami class super dreadnoughts were ordered for rushed completion, the ISS Pegasus, Rutledge, Hyperion, Odin, Hexapuma, Avalon, and the Nanietta Bacco. Although no one is sure exactly how, all eight Super Dreadnoughts were fully operational when the Alliance counterattack arrived a week later in what became known as the Tzenketh Massacre. An alliance fleet of almost three hundred ships were destroyed within minutes of their arrival. Captain Williams was rewarded for his role as commanding officer and was appointed as the Military Governor of Tzenketh, and granted the title of Preator of Tzenketh. Under his leadership, the defenses of Tzneketh have been rebuild, making her the most heavily defended beachhead under Terran Control inside Alliance space. The shipyards of Tznekth have also begun the construction of two more Saganami class Super Dreadnoughts, with one rumored to be a gift for Emperor James O'Brien himself.
